Conferences for PUMC How many of you know the difference between a Charge Conference and a

Church Conference? How many of you know that we have one or the other

every Fall?

The Conference is the annual meeting with our District Superintendent in

which important decisions are made for the coming year and ministries are cel-

ebrated. A Charge Conference includes only the Administrative Council. A Church Conference includes

all members of the church.

Our Conference will be a Church Conference and I want to invite and encourage all members to at-

tend. In my years of ministry I have often heard church members comment that they don’t know what’s

going on in the church. This is your chance to not only know what’s going on in the church, but to partici-

pate in what’s going on.

In addition to conducting the business of our church, we will be sharing some visions and some goals

for our church. We would love to have your input! So please join me, our District Superintendent, and our

Administrative Board for this important time of planning, sharing, and celebrating, on Sunday, November

15th, at noon.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Marvin

November 2015THE SPIREOperation Christmas Child

Ephesians 2:10 says “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God

prepared in advance for us to do.”

Our church is blessed to be a relay center for this project that delivers gifts to children, many of whom

have never received a gift before, and share Good News of Jesus Christ. We still have time slots available

to those who would like to help with accepting boxes in Fellowship Hall. Please see Liz Krehbiel if you

would like to help with snacks for volunteers that week as well.

National Collection Week is November 16-23.

Filling shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child is very simple. Boxes are available in Fellowship Hall

or you can use your own shoeboxes or plastic boxes. First, select an age category for a boy or a girl you

would like to help: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14 years old. Then, fill a box with appropriate toys and other items for a

child that age. Popular items include small toys, balls, games, candy, T-shirts, coloring books, school sup-

plies, and hygiene items such as soap, toothbrush, and toothpaste. The children also enjoy personal notes

and family photos that people include in their shoeboxes.

You can also fill shoeboxes, donate your $7 and/or put tracking on your box to follow it to its destination if

you go to www.samaritanspurse.org/occ.

If you have never been on a mission team, you will find it to be a source of tremendous joy, learning and sharing of Christ’s love. You will be blessed beyond anything you can imagine and you will know that you are sharing the love of Christ in ways that make a Christian difference. St. Teresa of Avila once said, “Christ has no body on earth but yours; yours are the only hands with which he can do his work, yours are the only feet with which he can go about the world, yours are the only eyes through which his compassion can shine forth upon a troubled world. Christ has no body on earth now but yours.” Join a Mission Team in 2016 and experience the joy of putting your faith into action in new settings and new cultures. “Show me your faith apart from your works, and I by my works will show you my faith.” James 2:18

We’re BACK!!

After a refreshing mid-term break, we have safely returned to the Sahel. During our time away God richly blessed us with many of our favorite things:

FAMILY: We enjoyed quality time with family members. Both Gracie’s & Sims’ hearts are full from all the grandparent, great-grandparent, aunt, uncle and cousin love they received! We, too, benefited and were especially encouraged to hear (and see the results) of how God has been working in the lives of our loved ones.

FRIENDS & FELLOWSHIP: A week near Albertville, France, allowed us to rekindled many relationships, including those with Dianna’s language partner R. (who we pray the Lord will draw near to Himself); Dean’s language partner, J; Gracie’s pre-K teacher, C., and her family (we spent an amazing evening with them in their home & pray that they, too, will be drawn to the Lord); several friends who work at the language school; and local church members. Other highlights included reconnecting with the B family and meeting Annie (both who are Chad-bound upon completion of their studies) as well as seeing old friends from our residency days in Wichita (who are headed to Burundi)! We also had the privilege to meet with and personally thank Pastor V for helping Dianna & the kids during Sims’ medical evacuation last May. Pastor V was on the same Chad-to-Paris flight and he graciously assisted Dianna from the NDJ airport all the way to the Paris Children’s ER. It was a pleasure to visit with him again and to meet his wife.

FOOD, FORESTS, & FROLICS:Throughout our time away we feasted on fresh bread, cheese, meats & sweets while exploring God’s beautiful handiwork displayed across France & Germany. A sampling of the sites we visited includes: an underground city, various fortified castles, several ornate chateaus with their intricate gardens, sandy & rocky beaches, WWI & WWII memorials, hikes through forests and around a volcanic crater lake, and scenic drives through the Alps as well as along the banks of Germany’s Mosel river.

REJUVENATED and REFOCUSED, we are now preparing to drive east where we can finally settle and reconnect with our community in the Swamp. We are excited to dive back into life and ministry there.

WHILE we were AWAY, our teammates were busy! LOTS of progress has been made at the job-site and the home where we will live is nearly complete -- we are especially grateful to Scott & his family for their faithful hard work. Andre’s family planted their rice fields & are awaiting harvest time (usually in November). Eric, assisted by his family & some of the D family, conducted a village-wide treatment for schistosomiasis (a chronically debilitating parasitic infection) in K-town. Suz & Mollie balanced homeschool duties and regular neighbor visits with grieving alongside a close friend whose mother died.Your faithful prayers are appreciated! DDG&S

Team completes 2015 VIM projects

In September and October, we participated

in 3 VIM projects. The Morse Memorial

United Methodist Church in Rushville,

Nebraska is a small rural older congregation

who had an aging wheel chair ramp that was

no longer safe to use. The VIM team stabi-

lized it by adding more supports and cross

beams as well as replacing some of the weak

boards. The interior of several buildings

at Camp Lakeside near Scott City, Kansas

received new coats of paint. The staff house

now has new sinks. The cafeteria kitchen

now has roll out drawers so items are more easily accessed. The pole shed now has room to park more

camp vehicles under its roof. Several bathrooms at Alpha Christian Children’s Home near Perry, Kansas

received some much needed remodeling. The scheduled VIM projects for 2015 are now completed. The

schedule for 2016 is being finalized. Look for some of the listings in the December Spire.

LOUISIANA, DULAC (Dulac Community Center) RV / non-RVDates: Jan. 10 – 21, 2016 RV Maximum: 8 Cost: $150/ solo, $300/ couple* Team leaders: Bill & Janet Ward, 620-221-2973-H 620-229-1393-M [email protected] We can, once again, go and help with the restoration. It is South and West of New Orleans, about as far as the roads go. RV’s will have full hook-ups, and non Rvers will have housing, and cooking facilities. I believe it’s $15/day. There is a $10/day charge for parking RV’s. TEXAS, SAN MARCOS (Southside Community Center) RV/ non-RVDates: Feb. 7 – 18, 2016 RV Maximum: 11 Cost: $150/solo, $300/couple *Team Leaders: Bill & Janet Ward, 620-221-2973-H 620-229-1393-M [email protected] Another return visit to San Marcos. There is a lot to see and do around the area. Park rigs at the Southside Community Center. Water and electricity (20 amp) AND a sewer dump!!!. A great area for a work team. ZERO Cost: $150/solo, $300/couple*Team Leader: Bob Moore 712-789-1084 [email protected] Note: This will be our VERY FIRST team to a Nebraska camp AND without our RV’s. If you wish to take your RV, I am sure there are RV parks in Cozad. The rest of us will be staying in the motel on the camp site. Plan accordingly. There are also cooking facilities, so we will have to plan for how the meals get provided. This is a brand new opportunity for us in Nebraska, since our formation of the new conference. I look forward with great excitement to have the op-portunity to expand our horizons into Nebraska. Some of us have visited this camp and it’s truly a wonderful opportunity and I can tell you that you are going to thoroughly enjoy your stay at this “motel”, and the camp director/ family are just wonderful people. Seriously consider joining us on this “new venture”. KANSAS, ARKANSAS CITY (CAMP HORIZON) RV/non-RVDates: April 10 – 15, 2016 RV Max. 11 Cost: $150/solo, $300/couple*Team Leaders: Bill & Janet Ward, 620-221-2973-H 620-229-1393-M [email protected] 16th year to visit this camp. All skills needed, such as painting, electrical, plumbing, cleaning, sewing, gardening, refurbishment, carpentry, etc. I under-stand that our BIG project this year is the original dining hall. Nice rooms for non-RV’ers, AND all meals furnished. RVers have electricity and water AND there is now a dump site. NEBRASKA, CHADRON (CAMP NORWESCA) non-RV Dates: May 22 – 27, 2016 RV Max. ZERO Cost: $150/solo, $300/couple*Team Leader: Bob Moore 712-789-1084 [email protected] Note: This will be another FIRST team to another Nebraska camp AND without our RV’s. If you wish to take your RV, I am sure there are RV parks in Chad-ron. The rest of us will be staying in the dorm at the camp. Plan accordingly. There are also cooking facilities, so we will have to plan for how the meals get provided. This is another brand new opportunity for us in Nebraska, since our formation of the new conference. I look forward with great excitement to have the opportunity to expand our horizons into Nebraska. Some of us have visited this camp and it’s truly a wonderful opportunity and I can tell you that you are going to thoroughly enjoy your stay at this, another good facility and the camp director is just wonderful. We are in the process of building 16 park benches for this camp and we will be taking those with us as one of our projects for this visit. You may hear from Bill Ward to come and help with the construction of those benches. KANSAS, DODGE CITY (Youthville) RV/non-RV Dates: June 12 – 23, 2016 RV Max: 10 Cost: $150/ solo, $300/ couple*Team Leader: Marlin Brown (316)393-6591 [email protected] Marvelous experiences in the past, so we are going back. They have some more projects for THIS TEAM!! Prayerfully consider this one. It’s in our own area and it’s ‘right down our alley’, right? THEY NEED THE HELP!!! RV’s will park, again, at the rodeo grounds. Non-RVers will be able to stay at one of the 3 VIM houses on the Youthville campus. They were not in too good of shape last year, so we will make sure they get that taken care of for this year, ok?? Note that this one is also 2 weeks. If you can’t be there for both weeks, we will understand and feel sorry for you missing out on all that fun. COLORADO, BELLVUE (Close to Ft. Collins) (Buckhorn UMC Camp) RV/non-RV Dates: July 17 – July 28, 2016 RV Max 8 Cost: $150/ solo, $300/ couple*Team Leaders: Bill & Janet Ward, 620-221-2973 H 620-229-1393 M [email protected] Very rustic, isolated, and SCENIC. 7800 ft. altitude. Access for RVs, last 5 miles a little challenging, but very doable. 20amp elec for RV’s, so bring adapters. Plenty of cabin facilities for non-Rvers. Private FISHING POND!!! Estes Park & Rock Mt. Nat. Park 45-60 min away. The directors are VERY excited about our decision to come back to their camp to work. Meals are provided IF THEY HAVE ANOTHER GROUP ON SITE, but it is wise to plan for fixing your own meals, just in case. Website www.buckhorncamp.org Good driving directions on the website. KANSAS, Scott City (Camp Lakeside UM Center) RV/non-RVDates: Sept. 18 – 23, 2016 RV Maximum: 14 Cost: $150/solo, $300/ couple*Team Leaders: Chuck & Linda Buchmueller, 620.770.0410 Chuck Cell, 620.770.0411 Linda Cell [email protected] Annual event. Very popular! Sign up early!!! All skill levels welcome. Cost includes all meals from Sunday night & throughout the week. KANSAS, Perry (Alpha Christian Children’s Home) RV/nonRV Dates: Oct. 9 – 20, 2016 RV Max: 8 Cost: $150/ solo, $300/ couple*Team Leaders: Chuck & Linda Buchmueller, 620.770.0410 Chuck Cell, 620.770.0411 Linda Cell [email protected] This camp is creating precious childhood memories in the lives of needy children. The kind of work we’ll be doing is similar, yet a bit different from most camps. RV’s will have electricity and water. A sewer clean-out is available, and fairly convenient. Non-Rvers will have sleeping space and a Kitchen. You will need to bring either COTS / SLEEPING BAGS/ AIR MATTRESSES, BEDDING (of course) and toilet supplies. Notice that we are doing 2 weeks again this time. If you can’t stay the whole time we will understand, and you will miss out on a lot of fun. J Perry, KS is located about 24 miles east of Topeka on hwy 24, so that should give you some clue as to the surroundings. The weather doesn’t get any better than it was in 2015. Great jobs, great weather, great people to work for, great love of GOD all around us!!!* The Cost numbers could change depending on donations.

What keeps us from truly following Jesus is that our hearts are pursuing something or someone else. While these pursuits may not be the “graven images” of old, they are in fact modern day idols. Behind the sin you’re struggling with, the discouragement you’re dealing with, the lack of purpose you’re living with is a false god that is winning the war for your heart.

UMW Plans All-Church Mission Project Sunday, November 15, all of you attending our church are asked to bring items for Health

Kits. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is calling for Health Kits because their supply is extremely low. Your donated items will be assembled by UMW and delivered to an UMCOR depot. Health Kits will then be distributed in the U.S. and throughout the world where they are most needed--often following a disaster. Please examine the related flyer in this Spire for a list of items you can donate. You will bring the items to the altar during each service on the 15th, or you can drop your items in the designated box outside the church office anytime from Nov. 15-18.

In this season of giving thanks, we hope you will celebrate your many blessings by giving to this project and sharing with others in need.

UMW is also actively planning the “Taste of Christmas” mission fundraiser. This will be in Fellowship Hall, Tuesday, December 1. Although evening officially begins at 7 p.m., but you may come at 6:30 to view the tables. We hope all women of the church will bring friends and come help us welcome the advent season by sampling delicious holiday food and viewing festive table settings. All money raised will go to local and area missions. Tickets are on sale Nov. 1 for $10 each from Jeanette Garretson, Genny Schmidt, or the church office.

Craig Dietz—2015 Physician of the Year

Providing a last resort net for those who fall through the federal safety net is what

Craig Dietz, DO does each day. As medical director for the National Association of

Free Clinics and chief medical officer and director of clinical research for the Kansas

City CARE Clinic—a site that treats 6,000 primary care patients and 1,000 HIV/AIDS

patients each year, Dr. Dietz innately understands the healthcare needs of some of the

neediest in his community and nationwide.

In his position at the Kansas City CARE Clinic, Dr. Dietz is best known for his sense

of humor, advocacy, drive, care and treatment of HIV infected individuals. With a staff

of 125, he also works to provide primary and preventative care--specializing in wom-

en’s health, LGBT health issues, chronic diseases, communicable diseases and mental

health--for those who need it most.

Not only is Dr. Dietz at the forefront of patient care, but he also founded and serves

as lead researcher at the largest HIV clinical trial facility in the region. He built the

clinical research staff from one person to several in five years, and obtained funding that not only helps patients get the latest

HIV treatment available, but also helps fund the main free clinic.

Dr. Dietz shares his vast knowledge, especially in HIV/AIDS, as the site medical director and associate professor of internal

medicine for the University of Kansas Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Programs. He also educates healthcare

practitioners, including physicians, nurses, pharmacists and fellows, about primary and advanced HIV AIDS care through a

Midwest AIDS Training and Education Centers HRSA Grant.

Dr. Dietz received his DO degree from Oklahoma State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine (OSU-COM) in 1997,

and completed his residency at Michigan State University, Detroit Riverview Hospital. He completed his master of public

health with an emphasis on community health, underserved populations, healthcare safety net and administration in 2007 at the

University of Kansas-School of Medicine in Kansas City, KS.

Dr. Dietz got a taste of serving underserved populations in medical school, when he did rotations and clinicals on local Na-

tive American Reservations. During his residency in Detroit, he really liked the inner city environment and got deeply involved

with serving the underserved. “Detroit was one of the best places to train because of the high level of poverty and significant

health care issues. I was there during the 90s. AIDS was at its height. There were still people dying in hospitals. In 1997, the

first AIDS drugs came out, and that’s when I started my residency. Lots of my patients had AIDS at the clinic,” he said.

When he’s not working or volunteering at a free clinic at home or on a mission trip abroad, Dr. Dietz enjoys traveling around

North America with his partner, who resides in Canada.

Because of his dedication to serving the underserved and finding innovative ways to provide and fund their health care, the

AOF is proud to present the 2015 Physician of the Year Award to Craig Dietz, DO.

Craig Dietz, DO, MPH, FACOI, AAHIVS

Kansas City CARE Clinic

Craig is being honored with the American Osteopathic Association’s physician of the year award. We are going to Orlando next week for the award presentation. Below is the article published on the web at aof.org Thank you for the instruction, support, friendship and love from each of you! Pam Dietz

Recycle at FUMC

REDUCE, REUSE,

RECYCLE, REJOICE!

Watch for recycle binsAt last weekend’ s Great Plains United Methodist Women’s Annual Meeting at St.Mark’s Church in Wichi-

ta, I was pleased to visit with the Environmental Stewardship presenter, Kathy Mann from Burwell, Ne-

braska who shared scripture, and some wonderful trivia and tips about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.

At this time of Thanksgiving, let us remember that God has given us this earth, and many blessings.

Love

from the UMW Recycling Team of Helen Bailey, Kim Claycamp, and Annette Van Blaricum.
