An Important Notice! ONE Service to Begin in July Dear Zion Church Family, It has been great seeing so many of you back together again for Sunday worship services!

As we look to July, the Church Council has decided to return to our normal summer schedule. With the attendance being low at the 10:30 service it seems logical to combine the services. Beginning on the first Sunday of July (July 5th) we will begin having only one service at 9:00 a.m. We will continue with the social distancing measures that we have put in place. We will continue using every other pew and limiting the number of people per pew as well as all the other procedures that were put in place. Wearing a mask is not mandatory, however, they are recommended. We feel that our new procedures have been working very well and that it is safe to return to one service. Thank you all for your understanding, patience, and cooperation as we go through these trying times. In Christ,

Rummage Sale Update and Important Information It has been a crazy last couple of months for all of us not knowing when and if things are going to get back to normal. With new things coming to

light every day as far as COVID-19, I took a request to the council on Monday, June 15 to see if there would be a chance if we could move forward with the sale. What we presented to the council were new safety precautions that would be put in place to keep volunteers and shoppers safe. Council did approve of the Rummage Sale happening with set up and days of the sale the first week in August 1st – 8th. If things take a turn for the worse, we will reschedule and move it back. One of the biggest changes will be that people will be required to wear a face mask on sale day. Shoppers will also be required to wear a face mask to even enter the building. Volunteers would also be required to wear face masks on sale days as well. If you would like to wear gloves that would be okay as well, we will have a box of gloves available for use. If you do not feel comfortable volunteering, we understand. If you have any questions, feel free to give me or Brad Parker a call.

- Abby Wilson & Brad Parker

Zion Fellowship – July 2020 There was no event in June. July – The ECC summer musical “Grits” has been cancelled for July. We will not have an activity for July. If we do come up with a “spur-of-the-moment” idea for an activity we can do outside this summer, we will try to contact everyone. Everyone stay safe and healthy. Hopefully we will see you soon. Check the monthly Newsletters, and also the weekly Bulletins, for any change of events dates, or times, that might occur. Anyone is welcome to join us for these events. If you have any questions, please contact Vickie Johanpeter (President), Carl or Jane Ridder (Vice Presidents), Marvis Templer (Treasurer), or myself.

Youth & Young Adult Worship - July 19 Youth and young adults from our Missouri Mid-South Conference are featured in a pre-recorded worship service that we will be sharing on Sunday, July 19th. The service will be played in the sanctuary, and will be shared through a YouTube link for those that would like to view it from home. One of our Zion youth, Alli Bright, is one of the many youth that participated in this worship service. The title of the service is “A Perfect World”. The youth and young adults share their vision of what their perfect world would look like.

Notes to Zion Thank you so much for the yard sign, prayer book, and video. I loved watching the video and remembering all the fun times/experiences. I also love the sign, it is in our front yard! Thank you! - Alli Bright

Thanks for the sign and for thinking of me during my graduation. I appreciate everything Zion has done for me.

- Brandon Titter

Dear Zion, We wish to express our sincere thanks for all the prayers, cards and support that we have received during this difficult time. A special thanks and heartfelt appreciation to Rev. Gil Bisjak for his wonderful service and to Kirk Hancox for the beautiful solos.

- The Edgar Koelling Family

I just want to say a huge heartfelt THANK YOU to our wonderful staff: Pastor Gil Bisjak, Connie Thompson, Alysha Petry, Mandy Frick and Karen Stafford. As we all know these last few months have not been easy. These five people went above and beyond what was asked of them. They all made sure our congregation and youth were taken care of, from the online services with the beautiful music to the activity packets and zoom meetings for our youth. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful group-they are the BEST!! - Jane Wilson

To our Friends at Zion, Just want to send a big ‘thank you’ for your continuing support of our pantry. Your help means so very much!

- Union Food Pantry

Betwixt and Between

A favorite childhood rhyme went like this: Row, row your boat, gently down the stream. Merrily, merrily, life is but a dream. And that reminds me of another song, Michael row your boat ashore….Many times people have alluded to life as a river. In the Smithsonian museum a series of paintings by Thomas Cole (1842) depict four stages of the life of a man sailing his boat down the river of life.

In the first panel, childhood, a young child lies in the boat with his guardian angel at the tiller. In the second stage, youth, the young man is full of himself. He doesn’t need an angel; he can do it by himself. He rows downstream with dreams of castles in the air. In adulthood he uses faith and prayer to get through the boiling rapids and building storms. In the final scene, old age his oars have been lost, his sails are in tatters while his angel guides him into eternity where he can sail peacefully forever more.

Well, I see myself still in the river of life with a vision of the eternal sea coming into view. The end of life is drawing nearer. But, I’m not yet finished. In the words of Robert Frost, I have miles yet to go and promises to keep. Each one of us is somewhere on the river of life. There are peaceful eddies where we simply drift in circles going nowhere. At other times we are fighting and struggling in the roaring rapids. Protests against unwarranted police violence have even come to the quiet suburbs of Missouri. The COVID-19 is still on the prowl. As a church we are waiting with anticipation the call of a new settled pastor.

Werner Erhard, the founder of EST said, “It’s easier to ride the horse in the direction it’s already going,” or as we used to say back in the 1970s, “Go with the flow”. We may not be able to change the course of the river, but with our faith and God’s help, we can shape the way we run it. “Go forth into the world to serve God with gladness; be of good courage; hold fast to that which is good; render to no one evil for evil; strengthen the faint hearted; support the weak; help the afflicted; honor all people; love and serve God, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit (UCC Book of Worship).”

- Rev. Dr. Gilford Bisjak, Transitional Minister

Our Global Ministry Sponsored Child

Iris Jherald Aquino Birthday: December 18, 2008 Family Information: He is the eldest child in his family. He has one younger brother named Romeo John. He lives with his father, mother, and brother. Both parents work but their income is not enough to provide for all the family’s needs.

Sponsorship Information: We sponsor Iris Jherald’s participation with the Dumaguete Kalauman Center for Development in the Philippines. The center is a community-based program in Dumaguete City, Philippines serving children who live with their parents or other close relatives who are under or unemployed. The children participate in church classes, Vacation Bible School, camp, literacy programs, field trips, and cultural activities. The program’s activities encourage children to grow as a whole person: mentally, physically, socially and spiritually. Sponsorship: Zion’s Sunday School classes sponsor Iris Jherald for $35 per month. Anyone can donate towards our global ministry sponsorship by noting your donation to go to Sunday School, or Global Ministry Sponsored Child.

Letters to Iris

Jherald We love hearing from our sponsored child as much as he loves hearing from us. You can read the last letter we received by stopping by the mailbox in the upper commons.

We invite everyone to write him a letter and drop it

in this mailbox or send it to the church.

We will send all of the letters collected during the month of July to Iris Jherald in August. We are encouraged to send him letters at least three times a year.

Special Church Council Meeting Minutes—May 6, 2020 Zion United Church of Christ Council met on Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at 3:30 pm, while practicing social distancing, with the following in attendance: Jane Wilson, Richard Young, Donna Bocklage, Kathy Reed, Dan Mossoney, Tom Williams, Ron Griffin, Bill Walker, Connie Thompson, Alysha Petry, Rev Bisjak, and Maxine Harrison. Rev Bisjak opened with prayer. Jane Wilson called the meeting to order. Final bill for the AC was presented at $40,694.00. Motion made and second to round up to $41,000 to be taken as first payment from the loan at UBU. Vote passed. Motion to discuss SBA loan. Could be approximately $22,500 and would not be required to be paid back. Will have Keith Crews at UBU make the application. Motion, second, and vote passed to have floors waxed in 3 classrooms at a cost of $650.00. Discussion on when to re-open Church with guidelines. Motion, second, and vote passed to re-open on June 7th. With following guidelines:

1. We will continue with 2 services at least through the end of June. The first service will be at 9:00 a.m. and the second service will be at 10:30 a.m. By changing the time of the first service, it will help cut down on the time between services for those who need to be at both services.

2. The nursery will not be available for young children.

3. We will continue with the virtual on-line services at least through the end of June.

4. Sunday School for children and adults is cancelled for now. Alysha and Mandy will continue their lessons for the children/teens as they have been and will hand out packets to the younger children.

5. We will not have any greeters at this time. 6. The ushers will not be handing out bulletins.

The bulletins will be by the offering plate for you to pick up as you drop in your offering.

7. Ushers will be required to wear masks when seating and dismissing.

8. We will have ushered seating (at least for the first two Sundays) until everyone is familiar with the new seating arrangements. The seating in the sanctuary will be in every other pew.

9. We will block off every other pew at the first service and for the second service the opposite pews will be used. We are going to try to limit the number of people in a pew to 3 when possible. Family units (parents and children) will be allowed to sit together. We ask that when you enter the sanctuary that you please sit as close to the front as possible. Accommodations will be made for those who have difficulty walking. By doing this we can practice the 6 feet social distancing by not having people walk by each other.

10.During the service, we will not have the hymnals or the bibles in the pews. By not having these, they will not have to be sanitized after each service.

11.We will not be having the chancel choir or the handbell choir at this time. We will have special music. Following CDC guidelines, we will not be singing hymns. According to the guidelines, singing is a major way that the virus can be spread.

12.We will have a spiritual communion. What this means is we will not be distributing the bread or the wine. There is not an easy or safe way to do this right now.

13.At the end of the service there will be an ushered dismissal the opposite way than what we are used to, it will be from the back to the front one pew at a time, again, this is to keep the social distancing.

14.There will not be a fellowship hour between services. We do not feel that there is adequate space to have this and still maintain the social distancing.

15.Pastor Gil will not be shaking hands at the end of the service. We do not want him to get sick.

16.After June 7th, committees and teams will be allowed to begin meeting again. All meetings

Page 8: The Spirit of Zion 2020 newsletter.pdf · An Important Notice! ONE Service to Begin in July Dear Zion Church Family, It has been great seeing so many of you back together again for

8

must be held in the lower commons or in the fellowship hall. As we have stated several times in this letter social distancing must be observed.

17.All outside groups have been or will be advised that they are not allowed to meet at our church until further notice.

18.If the need for a funeral were to arise, we will allow family immediate family and a few close friends to attend. They will have to be seated in every other pew and do social distancing.

Connie will send a mailing of the guidelines to the congregation prior to June 7th. Next meeting will be Monday, May 25 at 3:30. Meeting was adjourned with the Lord's Prayer in unison.

- Maxine Harrison, Church Council Secretary (approved by the Church Council on May 25, 2020.)

Battling Racism (abridged) The national leaders of the United Church of Christ issued a statement regarding racism and the covid-19 epidemic. In recent weeks our country has witnessed the murders of African descendant people at the hands of individuals and police officers who have negated Black lives and treated them as worthless and expendable. These events have once again brought to national and global attention the disparate numbers of Black people dying senselessly because of racism. As people of faith, we are tired of a justice system that seems to sanction police brutality with no consequences to those actions. We are tired of a health system that does not see health care as a basic right and a priority for all people. We are tired of the mistreatment, devaluing and dehumanization of Black lives. Race or ethnicity is known for around half of all COVID-19 cases and 90% of related deaths. Although gaps remain, the pattern is clear: Non-white populations are being hit disproportionately harder by COVID-19 in the U. S. We call upon our churches and Conferences to embrace new and increased levels of attention, commitment and action by intentionally resolving

to work on the elimination of racial and ethnic disparities. We call the United Church of Christ into dialogue and action as we examine and dismantle the political, theological, and social systems that produce injustices such as systemic racism and discrimination. We are rooted in the conviction that all forms of injustice can be overcome. Racial and ethnic disparities are the consequence of public policies, and as such can be changed. Tackling these inequities requires widening our understanding of critical and sensitive issues to include ways in which lifestyle factors influence individual and community health. - National Officers of the

United Church of Christ
