the impure, it is not polluted.”

Moments in Black history
Ira Aldridge was an American-born actor who went on to international fame when he arrived in
Europe to further his career. Aldridge is considered the first African-American actor to gain world-
wide acclaim, and the first Black actor to find fame in a foreign nation. Ira Frederick Aldridge was
born on July 24, 1807 in New York City to free Black parents. As a young student at the African
School, Aldridge was exposed early on to the works of Shakespeare and developed a zeal for act-
ing. While in his teens, Aldridge joined a Black acting troupe and then got his first professional
break in the 1820s. Together with William Henry Brown and James Hewlett, he helped form the
African Grove Theatre, the first African-American owned and managed theatre in America. With
acting jobs scarce in America due to racism and the like, Aldridge traveled to Liverpool, England
in 1824, struggling there as well early on before he found success interpreting Shakespeare. By
the 1830s, Aldridge had found solid footing as an actor and earned the name “The African Rocius”
after Roman actor Quinton Rocius Gallus.

DEDICATING THE CHAPEL TO ARCHBISHOP
JIM LYKE Though the tabernacle containing the
Blessed Sacrament is now in the Church, our chapel still
remains a place of prayer and encounter with the Lord. In
it, we celebrate the sacraments of anointing and confes-
sion, we light the votive candles and pray for God’s
blessing. We shall also build and keep a befitting reli-
quary of glass encasing for the relic of St Augustine, our
patron there. Therefore, I propose that we name this holy
place, Archbishop Jim Lyke Chapel. This helps us to never
forget our beloved Franciscan pastor, musician, innovator
and composer who left an endearing mark in the lives of
all who knew him. Some of us became Catholics thanks to
his invitation. Please may this be for us a reminder to
seek intercession of Archbishop Lyke which may lead to
the opening of the cause of his canonization.
HONORING SULLIVAN YOUNG, A TEACHER OF
FAITH We shall reverently place the name of Sullivan
Young on the glass encasing reliquary that will contain
the relic of St Augustine, the Doctor of Grace. It will be
our way of honoring this illustrious brother who was an
eminent catechist and teacher of faith in our parish and in
our Diocese. If you have an objection to this and to nam-
ing our chapel after Archbishop Lyke, please let me know.
THE PASSING OF SISTER NICK May many of us
who knew and loved Sr Nick Catrambone take heart at her
passing. She transitioned at the hour of Mercy on Mon-
day, July 12, 2021. We shall plan and celebrate a memori-
al Mass in her honor as soon as possible. Our condolences
especially to her beloved Sisters of Charity of Blessed
Virgin Mary and especially our own Sr Jackie who
worked very closely with her as a friend, co-worker and
sister of the same family.
CONFIRMATION OF OUR CHILDREN AND MY
SILVER JUBILEE MASS On July 25, 2021, our Bishop
will be with us at the 11:00 a.m Mass to celebrate Mass of
thanksgiving for my silver jubilee and to confirm our
young confirmandi. Please may you know that we will
still celebrate 4:00 pm and 8:00 am that weekend to give
room for people who may not be comfortable with the
crowd at 11:00 am.
SALUTATION AND BLESSINGS!
Dearly Beloved in Christ,
How are you today? We thank God for the gift
of another day. Please remain blessed and highly
favored.
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD The Lord we worship in whom we live, move
and have our being is our shepherd. That means
come rain, come shine, we shall not worry or be
afraid. He got our back. Are you knee-deep in
any situation that brings anxiety? You are not
alone. The Lord of hosts is with you the God of
Jacob is your stronghold.” The Song, Promises
written by Joe L Barnes, Carrington Gaines et al
says it all: “Though the storms may come and
the winds may blow I’ll remain steadfast. And
let my heart learn when you Lord speak a word
it will come to pass.”
As comforting as it is that the Lord shepherds
us, he also invites us to help in shepherding oth-
ers. That takes my breath away!
FIRST CLASS RELIC OF ST AUGUSTINE We now have the inestimable treasure of the
first relic of St Augustine. Williard Schmidt,
a dear friend who lives in Fallbrook, CA se-
cured it and sent it to me as a surprise package
when he knew that St Augustine is my par-
ish. The celebration of the feast of St Augustine
this year and years to come will include a sol-
emn veneration of the first class relic of our pa-
tron saint. Weather permitting, on the feast day
of St Augustine, before the Mass begins, we
shall process around the Church carrying the
relic and praying the rosary. After the Mass, we
shall place the relic on the altar or on an accessi-
ble stand for veneration. Our intention is the end
of the pandemic.

FIRST FRIDAY MASS AND ADORATION. For the month of August, the month of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary, our First Friday Mass and devotion will
be on August 6, 2021. Please come and be part of it.
You will be blessed beyond words.
JOB OPENING We need a part time book-keeper. If you can work dur-
ing the morning hours that will be preferable.
WHAT IS MORE?
The Lord says, “My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord;
I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).
