In May 2019, the Queensland Government released The Spit Master Plan. This followed a comprehensive master planning process and extensive community consultation over an 18 month period.

The Spit Master Plan articulates a shared vision for the long-term future of The Spit as a community asset for future generations.

The Queensland Government has committed $60 million to the implementation of the master plan. The Gold Coast Waterways Authority and City of Gold Coast are delivering the implementation projects in partnership with the Queensland Government.

Muriel Henchman Park PrecinctDelivery by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority

During consultation of the Spit Master Plan we heard that users would like overall improvement to the popular Muriel Henchman boat ramp facility. In response we’ve created a concept and are now seeking further feedback from the community. The concept plan proposes:

• increasing the number of boat ramps • upgrading and resurfacing the existing boat ramps• extending pontoons to cater for all types of watercraft• providing floating walkways to make the boat ramps easier to use • approximately 90 additional parking bays for cars and 50 for trailers

and• upgrading pathways, landscaping, toilets and showers.

A dedicated spot for launching emergency operations and storing Surf Lifesaving Queensland equipment will be provided. Existing community and sporting clubs will also be given space to meet and safely store their equipment.

We’re aiming for construction works on this $9.8 million project to be staged so that users can still access the area, with the first stage expected to commence in early 2022. Please view the project factsheet and email us at [email protected]

The first improvements arising from The Spit Master Plan have been realised through the construction of a shared and accessible pathway along Seaworld Drive. This 3 meter wide linkage between the Sea World Resort and Doug Jennings Park provides pedestrians and cyclists a safer and more enjoyable means to travel to the top of The Spit.

We’ve created revetment walls in some sections to defend against erosion and protect underground infrastructure, along with landscaping and other embellishments.

The Seaworld Drive shared pathway is now open to the public to enjoy.

We’ve supported the experience of the Spit as a green peninsular by making improvements to Moodarewa Spit. These have been well received by the community since its opening on 22 January 2021. This $2.8 million investment into the site includes:

• planting of over 700 native shade trees • dune restoration for erosion protection • picnic and recreation facilities such as public toilets, seating, shelter,

beach showers and water bubblers • an extension of the shared pathway to a viewing platform at the

southern end of Moondarewa Spit.

The $2.57million Seaway Promenade will become a must-visit destination for residents and visitors alike. 670 metres of accessible pathway on top of the Seaway south wall is nearing completion and offers spectacular views up and down the coastline. We’ve included some shaded seating and improved the surrounding landscape so that it’ll be a relaxing place to watch the boats sailing through the Gold Coast Seaway and the waves rolling in from the ocean.

Originally due to open in January, some defects were discovered in the concrete and for safety reasons the affected sections are being replaced. Rescheduled for opening in May 2021, its viewing platform at the eastern tip of the wall will be the perfect location to take that iconic selfie.

Marine Stadium Jetty and PontoonDelivery by the Gold Coast Waterways Authority

Plans are underway for the construction of the $4 million Marine Stadium Jetty and Pontoon. An accessible boarding point, suitable for recreational and commercial vessels (including ferries) is being designed for the northern end of Marine Stadium. We’re committed to Covid-safe people movements and provisions have been made to allow for physical distancing requirements.

The project will improve on-water transport access to the Spit and Doug Jennings Park.

We’re seeking your feedback on the concept design so that we can begin construction in mid-2021. Please view the project factsheet and email us at [email protected]

Waterways Drive Intersection Upgrade Delivery by the City of Gold Coast (CoGC)

As the gateway to a number of popular precincts, the Sundale Bridge, Gold Coast Highway, Waterways Drive and Macarthur Parade experience significant congestion.

To help keep traffic moving, we’re expanding capacity along this popular route. This includes adding a fifth lane on the Sundale Bridge, upgrading Waterways Drive, Macarthur Parade, and associated intersections. We’re also working to improve traffic flow along the coastal route by increasing capacity on the Gold Coast Highway between Main Beach and Southport. Expected for completion, late 2021. More information can be found on the project website.

The feedback and submissions received during last year’s public consultation process have helped to shape the final Spit Identity Strategy. We heard the community’s thoughts on the need to simplify the designs and bring forward elements such as maritime history and heritage. The focus on ecology with flora and fauna elements and the celebration of Indigenous heritage were positively received.

From this consultation process, the designs were refined to deliver an overall visual identity for The Spit coupled with a series of identities for each Spit precinct. The final identities:

• Celebrate the Yugambeh language in the precinct’s identities along with illustrations of the hero animal for each precinct

• Express a distinct overall identity for The Spit through the word-based logo form, with the dot of the ‘i’ emphasized as the Welcome Motif and the ‘t’’s and ‘S’ softened referencing the movement of sea and sand overtime and the playfulness present in many ways The Spit is used.

• Capture the sand, sun, shoreline, and deeper water, implying playfulness, water-based activities, and an outdoor lifestyle of The Spit through the place-based colours.

Look out for how the final identity concepts have been used on the street furniture of the Moondarewa Spit improvements, the Seaway Promenade upgrades and on the Seaworld Drive shared pathway.

The Spit Wayfinding and Interpretive Signage StrategyDelivery by Queensland Government, in conjunction withGold Coast Waterways Authority and City of Gold Coast

Planning is underway for the development of the next strategy to guide the design and delivery of wayfinding, interpretative signage and embellishments on The Spit. The development of the strategy responds to the master plan’s big picture actions to develop a wayfinding and interpretation network on The Spit. It aims to enhance the community and visitor experience and understanding of the area, increasing awareness and celebration of this green peninsular and its rich maritime, ecological, and cultural history. As part of developing the strategy, we will engage with interested stakeholders and community members, with consultation proposed to commence in mid- 2021.

Federation Walk Coastal ReserveDelivery by the City of Gold Coast (CoGC)

A bold rainforest restoration project has recently been launched by the Deputy Premier and Mayor to create 37 hectares of critically endangered littoral rainforest and coastal vegetation in Federation Walk at The Spit:

• funding of approximately $7 million is being provided by the Queensland Government and CoGC over a 10-year timeframe

• a permanent irrigation system, to support the restoration of native forest into a healthy and biodiverse system, is being funded by the Federal Government.

A landscape concept plan for Federation Walk will be prepared by CoGC to help ensure that nature-based recreation opportunities (as defined by the Spit Masterplan) are integrated with the rainforest project. This project builds on the work done in the area by Friends of Federation Walk and will also help facilitate engagement and project updates with community groups.
