Register of Ground Engineering Professionals Sponsor’s Statement FormThe sponsor’s role

Sponsors of applications to the Register of Ground Engineering Professionals (RoGEP) are asked to complete this form.

If supporting a candidate for Technician/Practitioner/Professional Grade who is applying within 12 months of receiving their Professional Qualification letter, you need only supply an email indicating your support of their applicable Grade application. These should be sent to [email protected]

Sponsorship is a serious undertaking and is not merely to support a colleague or friend. A sponsor acts in the capacity of a ‘competent’ person by evaluating the candidate’s professional standing and reputation. The role acts as means of protecting the values and standards of the professional bodies concerned and your profession.

The over-riding duty of all sponsors is to declare on the Sponsor’s Statement form that:

“The candidate is a fit and proper person for admission to the Register of Ground Engineering Professionals”.

Sponsors are either members of the register at a grade equal to or higher than that of the candidate or should be approved by the RoGEP Panel to be a sponsor. Should the sponsor not be a current registrant they are required to complete the Non-Registered Sponsor’s Approval Form 3932 and forward it, together with a brief two page CV, to the ICE Professionalism and Registers Executive at [email protected]. All non-registered sponsors will have their documentation reviewed and responded to within 10 working days.

The sponsor shall not be related to the candidate.

The completed Sponsor’s Statement form should also be sent directly to [email protected].

Sponsor’s responsibilities and knowledge of a candidate

Sponsor’s Statements are a fundamental element in the review of a candidate’s submission. When asked to be a sponsor, please take the responsibility seriously, understand what the required attributes are, and provide useful, in-depth comments about the candidate.

There are five grades of registrants:

Registered Ground Engineering Technician Registered Ground Engineering Practitioner Registered Ground Engineering Professional Registered Ground Engineering Specialist Registered Ground Engineering Adviser

The six attributes are common across these grades but the competence level to be achieved varies according to the particular grade. All sponsors must be aware of the criteria and the competence level against which the candidate is to be assessed and provide in-depth comments against each attribute accordingly.

With the exception of those candidates applying within 12 months of Professional Qualification, all candidates are to indicate their main areas of expertise on their application form. These have been created in order to have the application assessed by assessors with similar expertise. Successful candidates are not registered under the areas of expertise but under one of the five grades only.

For a completed Sponsor’s Statement to provide any real added value to a candidate’s submission, a one-line statement noting that the candidate is, for example, ‘technically competent’ is not sufficient as this is of little use to the assessors.

This is not a personal opinion, but an informed statement measured against the relevant competencies set out in the RoGEP Guidance (Appendix A).

Sponsors must complete this form themselves and take all reasonable steps to ensure that the statements they have made are in no way misleading. Failure to do so may breach your host institution’s Rules of Professional Conduct. Please note: Documents relating to RoGEP are available at ice.org.uk/rogep
