April showers bring May flowers so they say. It is actually still April as I pen this missive and I don’t know about you but I can use a little more sunshine. Nevertheless, it is spring and summer is right around the corner. With that said, the activities at our range will get much busier in general as we have added several additional festivities to our agenda. Let me list a few in the order of event. Sunday June 23 rd from noon to 3:00pm is our club picnic. Once again we will be sponsoring a drive to collect toiletries like socks, towels, toothpaste, diapers etc. with a special plea for kid’s bicy- cles. This donation drive goes to the Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County. It should be noted that we do this in conjunction with the Snohomish County Prosecuting Attor- ney’s office. This started last year when one of our members who works in that office asked how they may be of assistance. It is a wonderful partnership that I hope will endure for many years to come. So please if you have any items to donate bring them by range. We of course always welcome money donations as well for this worthy cause. In July the second weekend specifically is our annual 3D archery shoot. The rest of the range is closed to other ac- tivities but this event is very popular and generally draws a considerable crowd of archers shooting on our walk through range at life size targets of various animals. It’s a good tune up for hunters and is a pretty good walk through exercise as well. Speaking of hunters you’ll note a pic- ture included in this article. For those of you who don’t know her this is a picture of Patty Webster and the prize hog she recently shot in Texas. Patty is the wife of Gary Webster our most recent past president. Gary and I as well as three others went to this hog hunting ranch back in 2014. Rimfire Match Report for April 2019

Effective with the November 2018 match, theUnited States Bench Rest (USBR) 50-yardrimfire target will be used. Each target con-tains 25 two-inch diameter bulls plus threesighter bulls. The scoring system is based onwhere the bullet touches the inner edge of thering of the bull. Only one shot per bull isallowed. In the event that two shots land inthe target, the lower scored one is counted. Each of the rings is .125 inches wide beyondthe .1-inch center bullseye so even a fraction-al miss can adversely affect the shootersscore. “X” s will be recorded and will beused for tiebreakers only.

This is the link to how to score the target:https://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328392

Copies of these instructions are also availablefrom the Match Director.

The competitors are separated into two divi-sions, Match for rifles designed for matchcompetitions typically costing $700 or morelike those manufactured by Anschutz andSport for rifles designed for target and sportshooting like those manufactured by Ruger,Savage, and CZ.

The entry fee is $10 with two dollars pershooter for target expenses and the balance

Annual Meeting Minutes Continued are not prepared to rent firearms.

One of the members complimented theclub for the improvements they havemade over the last couple years.

Larry Mallory suggested all memberspost something good about this club(for example, increasing the roundcapacity limit in magazines on the riflerange) on their social media with weget home tonight.

Ted Hudlow moved to adjourn themeeting at 9:56 PM. Seconded by JoeRinaldi. Passed.

tion Day on August 17th. Joe asked themembers to encourage people to come.We also welcome volunteers. If you areavailable and would like to help, pleasecontact the board.

Joe also presented the club will be rafflingoff a hunt. We will draw tickets for fourhunts. One ticket provides an opportunityto win one of the four hunts. If you pur-chase more than one ticket, you could winmore than one hunt. We are starting tosell tickets today (April 10th). The draw-ing will be the Members’ Annual Meetingin 2020. You can get tickets at all therange offices. We will also be sellingtickets at events like gun shows. A mem-ber asked if this was for members only? No. This will be open to the public.

A member suggested providing a coveredshooting area in the shotgun range.Another member suggested we provideheating in the handgun range.

We discussed the range hours. A sugges-tion was made to change the handgunrange hours to be from 9am to 7pm versusnoon to 7pm. The board will be consider-ing these options.

We discussed how the club should com-municate with members. Some memberssuggested we send out short emails withchanges happening at the range. For ex-ample, announcing the increase to 10rounds in a magazine on the public riflerange.

A member suggested we increase theprice of using the range for the public toincrease incentive for people to become amember.

Another member suggested we add a noteto our hours on our website stating weallow 10 rounds in a magazine on ourpublic rifle range.

Another suggestion was for the club toemail the members asking what they likeabout the club and suggestions they haveto increase public use and membership.

Robb Stack presented a concept of addinga series of signs along 228th. What do

people think? Someone thought it wouldbe better to spend money on the comfort ofthe range (covered areas, heaters and etc.)before we spend money on signs.

For the Good of the Order:The annual picnic will be on June 23rd. OnJuly 4th, Dan Barton will drive a Jeep witha trailer in the Bothell 4th of the July pa-rade. He wants to hand out 400 fliers andneeds four volunteers. Dale Sieg volun-teered. Dan still needs 3 volunteers. TedHudlow said there are banners in the backroom. If you are no longer using a bannerthat is yours, please remove it.

A member asked why we do not rent fire-arms? There are a lot of things we need toconsider before we do that. For now, we

Highpower Rifle Match

April 14, 2019 High Power

The newsletter editor had to wake mefrom a spring nap to make the deadlinefor newsletter publication. I cajole thesecharacters to line up for a photo, so theleast I can do is pen a few words to gowith it. We have target sheets at theready to use as portraits should anyonebe in a witness protection programthough apparently none are as we seesmiling faces, well mostly.

Not a bad turn out for a Kenmore re-duced range match, 7 competitors. Re-duced range (100 yards) is the best thatwe can do yet those who participate willtell you it isn’t easier. As a comparison, this correspondent drove to Okanogan toparticipate in a CMP Game 200, yardCourse B 50, round match. At that eventthe turnout was 15 competitors, 2 werejuniors.

Back to the reduced range, you wouldn’tthink that from the scores these guysshoot that it is easy. Two pin winners,

Robert Shuey, a gold pin in the modernmilitary category and Brian Schremp, earned a bronze pin for the new for thisyear – “Unlimited Modern Military”rifle.

We learned from this match that one ofthe competitors is a Mauser Mechanic.Andrew Hermer got Milt Schneider’sSwedish Mauser running. As I under-stand, the issue was that the bolt hadn’tbeen assembled properly. Thanks An-drew, from me and Milt!

May’s match will be an NRA ApprovedMatch the First Sunday, May 5th, as theSecond Sunday, is Mother’s Day.

Matt Daly was shooting a SavageModel 12 in 6mm BR, probably thebest rifle you could choose for ourfactory class matches. He’d sold itonce but fortunately was able to buy itback. Here are Matt’s scores for eachof the four matches (targets) we shot.91, 92, 89 and 94 points.

Thanks to Matt for helping put up allthe targets throughout the morning. Our next match is May 18. Several ofour shooters were down in Sacramentoshooting in a national long rangematch. Jeff Locke did particularly wellat 1000 yards, finishing first in scoreand second in group, that’s out of 41shooters! Fantastic shooting, Jeff!Maybe he’s learned a little bit at ourKenmore matches. Best of all, Jeff isalways incredibly helpful to anyoneneeding assistance in shooting thoselittle groups and high scores. We’relucky to have him at our range that’sfor sure. Any questions about ourmatches, call Richard Nicol at 206-784-1093.

April Benchrest Match Report

We only had enough shooters to fill onebay this morning. It was supposed to besunny but it was cool and overcast in-stead. Which was actually okay since thatmay have kept the winds and the miragedown somewhat. Breezes were light butchangeable and required one’s attention. We were happy to see Josh Shaw with usagain, this time shooting his new benchgun, a beautiful 6mm BR put together in afirst class way by the folks at Kelbly’s inOhio. His is a Panda action with integralrail for scope rings. A real nice setup. AndJosh shot it very well right off the bat. Weshot all matches at 300 yards and this wasour first match of the regular shootingseason when we begin competing for theShooter of the Year trophy. As usual therewere mostly 6mm rifles on the line butthere was also a 7mm-08 and a 30 BR.

I’ll go through all the custom class scores

first and then record Matt Daly’s scoreswho was the only shooter in the factoryclass. In match one Richard Nicol was firstwith 102 points, Rick Graham was secondwith 101 and Dan Kjelland, fresh from hisbig win down in Tacoma the previousweekend (Congrats, Dan!) was third with ascore of 100. In match two, Josh Shawcame in on top scoring 101 points, Danwas second with 100 and Richard and Ricktied for third with 98 points each. Mr. Con-sistency, Dan shot another 100 for firstplace in the third match. Richard and Joshtied for second with scores of 99 and Rickshot another 98 for third place. In the lastmatch, Rick shot the best score, 100 points.Josh and Dan both had 98 points for sec-ond place and Richard was third with a 96.The winds were kind of deceptive. For themost part is was fairly calm but a suddenbreeze could easily throw a shot out of theten ring if the shooter wasn’t paying atten-tion. At 300 yards you learn a lot and youlearn to be careful. Our range slopes up-wards and past 100 yards it’s fairly ex-posed, unlike at 100. If you can shoot goodgroups at 100 you still have to learn therest of the game, which means learning todecipher that pesky wind.
