Principal’s Report

Mr. Reynolds’ Farewell After just over eleven and a half years, Mr. Reynolds performed his final teaching duties at the College on Wednesday. Mr Reynolds joined the staff in January of 2008 after undertaking teaching rounds at the Col-lege during 2007. He has been active in a wide range of areas and has undertaken a number of additional re-sponsibilities during his time at St. Arnaud, including a number of Year Level Coordination roles. He has also been instrumental in the College’s participation in the Energy Breakthrough and I must admit that one of the times I saw him most excited was when the new Trisled cart was delivered early last year! Words cannot do eleven years of work justice, but on behalf of the entire College community, I would like to thank Dave for all of his work and commitment to St. Arnaud Secondary College, and wish him all the very best in his new adventure as the (oldest) recruit in this new Metropolitan Fire Brigade Intake. Staffing changes Due to Mr. Reynolds’ departure, and the imminent departure of Mrs. Knight on family leave, we have had to adjust some teaching loads and responsibilities for the remainder of the year. Firstly, I would like to welcome Miss. Casey Bertalli and Miss. India Griffith to our staff for the remainder of the year. It is great to be able to welcome back former students to the College and I am sure that they will both settle very quickly into our routines. Mrs. Reynolds will be at the College full time for the rest of the year and will be taking over re-sponsibility for Year 11 and 12 Coordination. There will be some other class teaching changes which will take effect (hopefully) next week. One-to-One Program Payments It has come to my attention that there are a number of families that have not kept up to date with their pay-ments for the student laptops, despite reminder letters. This program is a great addition to our College and there is no doubt that students have appreciated both the machines and the work that has gone into upgrading our network to ensure a more accessible and reliable internet. The College, through the School Council, has enabled parents to access machines at a much reduced rate, which has been carefully budgeted for. We had a couple of situations where payments were not made and the machines were re-allocated to other students. We certainly do not want to go down the path of having to ask students to return their machines due to missing payments on their agreed plans. Family statements will be sent at the end of this week and we are asking that all families check for any outstanding contributions for their laptops. If you are experiencing difficulty in making the payments, please contact either Mrs. Kerrie Swanton, Business Manager, or myself, at the Col-lege. Lunch at Kara Court

On Tuesday, Abby Needs, Callum Edwards and Mr Lobley joined the residents of Kara Court for lunch. Ab-by and Callum spoke to the residents and the staff about happenings at the College prior to eating with them. I would like to thank Scott Wilson for the invitation, and hope that through discussions, there may be more opportunities for our students to join with the residents. Hearing about the great food that was served will ensure we have a line-up of students wanting to go. Thanks again. State Squash

On Thursday, Mitch Birthisel, Jake Male and Vinnie Saies travelled to Melbourne to compete in the state squash titles, as they have done for the past five years. At the time of writing this report, results were not known, but I am sure they will have done their best and represented the school with pride. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Expressions of interest are still open for the October 16 performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with the cost of the ticket and travel being only $90. At this stage we have a number of tickets left and if all of our tickets are not used up, they will be offered to students from the Primary School who are currently on a waiting list. Fine Dining at Kara Court

On Tuesday 23rd July, two of our VCE students

attended a lunch engagement at Kara Court Aged

Care. Abby Needs and Callum Edwards

represented the school at the lunch and spoke to

the residents and staff about their school and

other interests. Two students from St. Arnaud

Primary School also attended.

Callum and Abby spoke to a number of residents,

both in the dining room and around the ward.

Both students represented the school admirably,

as could be attested to by the keen interest of the

residents. They discussed their studies, some of

the improvements at the school and their own

focus going forward.

The meal itself was a fine example of the tasty and nutritious fare that Kara Court serves to

the resident. The main course consisted of a lovely chicken parmigiana with a side of jacket

potato, steamed carrot, peas and beans. The chicken was moist and delicious and the

vegetables were cooked to perfection.

For dessert, an amazing apple crumble with both custard and cream left you feeling more than

sated. The residents really seemed to enjoy having young visitors from the schools come in to

see them, and we hope to be able to continue the close relationship between some of the

youngest and oldest members of our community into the future.

Yr. 12 Biology Excursion to Ecolinc - How are species related

On Monday 22 July, the Year 12 Biology students once again drove down to Ecolinc in Bacchus Marsh to complete their SAC for Outcome 1 on how we can determine how closely related different organisms are and to discover how proteomics is one method for determining evolutionary relatedness. They did this by learning how to compare protein profiles of different ani-mals and predicted evolutionary relatedness of marine animals, which in-cluded an Atlantic Salmon, a Banana Prawn, a Rainbow Trout, Gummy Shark and Scallop. They extracted protein from muscle tissue of the animals and then set up and run polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. After lunch, they analysed the gels and constructed a cladogram showing evolutionary relatedness of the ani-mals. It was determined that the Rainbow Trout and the Atlantic Salmon were the most closely related and the Scallop a very distant ancestor.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Note the date on your calendar and get organised!

16thto 21st September - last week of Term 3

All Year 10’s are expected to organise their own work

experience during the week of 16th to 21st September. If it is

not possible during this week, then work experience could be

organised during the following two weeks in the holiday period.

We encourage students to search for a much wider experience than their regular

workplace, if they have one, and hope this opportunity allows them to encounter a

workplace that a student may otherwise not have the opportunity to experience.

Dream big!
