The St. Augustine Path: a ‘Path to Compostela’ in Lombardy, North of Italy

Abstract

The St. Augustine Path is an Italian pilgrimage, a new tool for sustainable touristic knowledge which can be walked in Lombardy, the well-known Region located in the North of Italy. It has been conceived as based on a on foot pilgrimage, following the ispiration of the well-known pilgrimage to Santiago of Compostela. The St. Augustine Path is a 610 km long route along 26 days travel, that allows to visit fifty Marian Sanctuaries in the Lombard area, realizing a real “en plein air” Rosary.

The St. Augustine Path is also called by pilgrims The Rose Path, due to the flower shape of the pilgrimage course. It is an ecosustainable path of faith but of diversion too, that – along the way – allows both the knowledge and the full appreciation of the most remarkable landmarks of historical and environmental interest of Lombardy (ville di delizia, that is aristocratic residences, romanic churches, mansions, monuments, museums, parks, etc.).

It is esteemed that this pilgrimage, if promoted and enhanced both in a local, national and international spheres, would lead on the area of the St. Augustine Path from 20.000 to 50.000 pilgrims per year, considering the easier reaching of the Lombardy area and the contextual scheduled Expo 2015 in Milan.

A short description of the the St. Augustine Path

The St. Augustine Path is a Lombard proposal for a new ecosustainable pilgrimage - to be made not necessarily, but preferably, on foot - conceived to reach and connect in its several stages fifty Marian Sanctuaries, located in seven Lombard Provinces: the Path also joints the three main places in Lombardy related to Augistinian devotion: Rus Cassiciacum (where Augustine converted to Faith), the Milan Cathedral (where Augustine was baptized by Bishop Ambrose, the Easter night of 387 a.C.) and the St. Peter Basilica in Pavia (where the Saint relics are nowadays venerated). In addition to the fifty Sanctuaries (some of these in themselves are already extremely valuable, both from a historical and an architectural point of view) the route of this Path has been planned so that to re-introduce, along the way, the most important artistic sites and, more in general, sites of interest in Lombardia (churches, monasteries, ancient and modern monuments, natural parks, parks and ville di delizia, that is aristocratic residences). So it winds on a very rich itinerary from the landscape point of view. This path has been prepared having as a sort of ideal reference the more renowned Path to Santiago of Compostela, even if the Path of St. Augustine has its very own peculiarities, with some non-slight element of originality. The original inspiration beneath this pilgrimage proposal is – above and most of all – of Marian matrix. In no other place like Lombardy the worship of the Virgin Mary manifests itself in a huge series of places of cult and, more in general, in popular attestation of faith that today are still clearly visible in the

mass of icons, aedicula, niches, chapels, Marian caves easily admirable in a well attentive stroll in some of the villages of the area. To grow rich this almost unique heritage of attestation of faith in the Virgin – having its specific historical reasons – there is the certified abode in Brianza of St. Augustine of Hippo, in the village of Cassiciacum / Cassago, evidently well-documented from the Saint itself in his book The Confessions in the period of his life following his conversion and shortly preceding his baptism from Bishop Ambrose.

Thet is, in a moment of a faith path extremely important for this Saint. The symbol of this conversion, of this change in Augustine’s life, is represented by the famous “belt” that the Madonna gifted when she appeared to St. Monica, mother of St. Augustine. This belt is a symbol of St. Augustine first, and then of the faithfulness to the Rule, as it was adopted by his religious Order.

And, even if – as it has been showed – this Path has clear Marian and spiritual religious values, nonetheless it can also be interpreted and carried out in a more laic key, that is carried out only in order to temporarily detach for some days from one’s own concerns, or so to dedicate some more time to things that matter more for oneself, to one’s own last ideality. At the same time, the St. Augustine Path can also be conceived much more simply as a moment of relaxation and intelligent holiday on foot or by bycicle, a really true route of sustainable tourism in a Region of Italy (Lombardy) still very little known to most of the people, nonetheless extremely rich in somewhat fascinating monumental and landscape attestations. In other words, if it is true that a 26-days pilgrimage is not something improvised, in case You want to undertake it in a crucial moment in Your life, also the Path of St. Augustine can also represent, with a minor emotional involvement, an original moment of relax, different

from the traditional fairs in sea or mountain villages, maybe only to discover that worthier Italian, European and international holiday places aren’t any better than Lombardy Region – as a peaceful and quiet place
