It has become a tradition, in the first Z-Magazine in spring, Judy Ann Melchior discusses the breeding stallions of Studfarm Zangersheide. Like every other year, the breeders are looking forward to hearing about the new stallions and the surprises that the world’s biggest stallion station has in store for them. It is always an extremely strong collection. A balanced selection of pensioned stars, active top sporthorses and promising talents. Judy Ann gives her personal view about her stallions.

The stallions of Studfarm Zangersheide

Taloubet Z“Taloubet Z has recently given me one of the fin-est moments in my life. His goodbye was like a fairytale that could not have been written better. To dominate in the sport up to age 18 and then saying goodbye in Leipzig by winning the World Cup… it simply could not be any better. Now that he is back at Zangersheide, he can devote the rest of his life to

breeding. When you cross your mare with Taloubet Z, you can be sure of a product with super fast ac-celeration, power, a flashing foreleg and enormous hardiness. These qualities made Taloubet the horse that he is and these are the qualities this stallion will pass on to his offspring.”

Aganix du Seigneur Z“Aganix du Seigneur Z has caused a fresh wind blowing in breeding. Aganix himself was a remarkable sport horse under Jos Lansink that had everything to go very far. When an injury put an end to his sport career, I did not hesitate for a moment to acquire him for breeding. And I am still very happy that I did. Especially now that his oldest products have found their way to international top-class stables. Agana van het Gerendal Z recently moved to Cian O’Connor, Agadance van ’t Gelutt Z to Jos Lansink, Oak Grove’s Americana Z is with Harm Lahde, … Breeding with Aganix du Seigneur Z offers a guarantee for a sporty, extremely athletic and energetic foal.”

case with Cornado II Z and his full brother Cornado NRW. One won under Christian Ahlmann, the other under Marcus Ehning. This season Cornado II Z will fully devote himself to breeding at our studfarm. The foals from the Cornado’s have exceptionally handsome conformations with a very good upper line. They make uncomplicated sport horses, competitive and sporty, just like their sire.”

Aktion Pur Z“In the same way that Cabrio Z was a unique horse for Olivier Philippaerts, Aktion Pur Z was the horse that shaped my career. The kind of horse that you only meet once in a lifetime. Aktion Pur Z had incredible power and talent. I have always believed in him, but now that his oldest products are 5-yr-olds, I am sure that we will see them back in the sport. In his first breeding season I often recommended Aktion Pur to my friends and colleagues, who did indeed use him a lot. When I meet them nowadays at shows, they are always talking about their Aktions jumping so well. That is a promise for the future!”

Canturano Z“Canturano Z was omnipresent in the last season. Not only was his first breeding season at our studfarm an absolute hit, also his offspring were in the news every week. The most famous one is perhaps Daimler, winning the 5* Grand Prix in Dublin under Werner Muff and finishing 2nd in the 5*GP of Basel, where he also won a 1m55 class that same weekend. He also gave an impressive performance in the Nations Cup Finals in Barcelona. Martin Fuch’s Chica B Z, about which you can read more further on in this magazine, is also a Canturano daughter that is making her way to the top. Like their sire, Canturano products often have a lot of blood and are very beautiful; in addition, he can add sharpness and quality to your mare’s products.”

Cornado II Z“You rarely see two full brothers active at the highest level in the sport. When they are also both winning at 5* level, it becomes truly exceptional. Still, this is the

days, you can find scores of Levisto’s, all with the same qualities; they are intelligent, compact, well-balanced, with a perfect attitude. In short, pure sport horses that would make everbody happy in today’s sport.

Cabrio Z“Cabrio Z is one of our most recent acquisition and he comes from the ‘wall of fame’ of pensioned 5* winners that have started their second career at Zangersheide. We are therefore very excited about the arrival of Cabrio Z. He is a stallion with a lot of blood that won the 1,000,000 dollar GP of Spruce Meadows, dominated in the top sport for many years and, in addition, is exceptionally successful in breeding. A stallion like that is an asset for every stallion station. Cabrio Z was the horse that shaped the career of Olivier Philippaerts and

when he talks about the stallion, he only has praise for his white pearl. He believes that Cabrio Z is the kind of horse you only meet once in your lifetime. For the breeders it is an advantage that breeding with Cabrio Z is hardly a risk; the stallion performed at the highest level himself and supplied, for example, Hector van d’Abdijhoeve, Hunter C and Hadja van Orshof also offspring that can handle the highest level. Surely, that is what we expect from any breeding stallion!”

Asca Z“Asca Z was the youngest stallion this year to reach the top 100 of the WBFSH-ranking and that gives him the status he deserves. As a sport horse he was active at the highest level, both under me and Christian (Ahlmann) and it is hard to find another stallion with the same qualities. Asca Z is tall-framed, long-lined and has an exceptional amount of blood. We see the same blood in his offspring, which are beginning to feature everywhere in the last few

years. Think of Bacara d’Archonfosse, who won in Hamburg, Calgary and New York or other young talents such as Almeria Z (Timothee Anciaume), Armani SL Z (Eugenio Garza Perez) or Max Kühner’s Ascalan Z. Asca Z is my pearl, I really love this stallion and often recommend him to my friends and breeders, because I have total confidence in his breeding quality.”

Heartbeat Z“Heartbeat was attracted by Zangersheide to add the valuable blood of Heartbreaker to our population. This tall-framed stallion with his great front recently received the title Elite in Sweden and for many years was one of the most popular breeding stallions. His products are indeed doing exceptionally well; Shane Sweetnam’s Main Road, Steve Guerdat’s Happiness, Andreas Schou’s Hazel BS and Braveheart are all jumping at 1m60 level. Heartbeat passes on blood and technique, just like his own sire Heartbreaker did.”

Chellano Alpha Z “My father would have loved to hear it: in breeders circles you hear more and more often that it seems that Chellano Alpha Z is breeding even better than his original. Although the genes of Chellano Alpha Z and Chellano Z are identical, this is already one of the finest compliments a sire can get. Especially when you look at the offspring of Chellano Z himself. It is gratifying that finally the taboos are broken and that Chellano Alpha Z arises more pronounced as a unique sire, adding blood and technique to your mare’s products.”

Qatar Z“At the latest stallion selection in Westfalia Christian and I were deeply impressed by this young stallion. He displayed immense power combined with a perfect technique. You do not find a stallion like that every year and we were determined to bring this one to Zangersheide and make him available to our breeders. Qatar Z is a cool-headed and smart horse, pleasant to handle. Besides, we had wanted to add the blood of his sire Quasimodo Z to our breeding for some time already. I am absolutely convinced that Qatar Z is an asset for our stables and for breeding. We will give him good chances, anyway, and I will use him for some of my own mares.”

Columbus Z“Columbus Z is a son of Cornet Obolensky with a good and soft mouth. He is a finely shaped stallion with an active and powerful canter and a very light-footed jumping manner. I know his dam Beirut 2 very well and I must say that Columbus Z reminds me a lot of her. He has the same blood and light-footedness that may well come from Baloubet du Rouet. Columbus Z had no trouble moving from free jumping to jumping under saddle and hops over a high fence with great ease. He furthermore seems to be incredibly hardy. He is a horse that never gives up!”

Copycat Z “Copycat Z is a smallish stallion but a very complete and well proportioned horse. In the recent Belgian stallion competitions, he managed to convince quite a number of breeders with his sporty looks and explosive jumping manner. He jumps like a cat, with the perfect technique and is so light off the ground that it feels as if he has springs under his hooves. He is very supple and has an energetic canter.”

Magazine February 2018

Brunetti Z“Brunetti is a striking appearance; wherever he performs, breeders are crowding around the exit of the ring to take a look at him from close by. He has a lot of blood, tremendous power, he is long-lined and has a good mouth. Besides, he is an extremely noble horse with a solid, good balance. In short, a sport horse that many riders dream of and of the kind that we are going to need in the future. I believe that, in view of his own qualities, Brunetti Z may herald a new era in breeding and produce the horses of tomorrow. I am already looking forward to the first foals of Brunetti Z. Even if this stallion passes on just some of his good points to his products, we are already well served.”

Cool Crack Z“Cool Crack always manages to convince me! Under saddle he displays great power and top quality. He is a handsome lad with strong bones, long-lined and yet with a very compact canter. In fact, he has all the qualities you may expect from a complete sport horse. I had two of my own mares served by him, including Ratina Gamma Z, the clone of Ratina Z.”

Air Jordan Alpha Z“Air Jordan Alpha Z successfully follows the path of his stable mate Chellano Alpha Z before him and his first crop produces champions in free jumping and since the last stallion selection he also has a licensed son in the fantastically jumping Alejandro Z. At our studfarm this handsome dark brown stallion replaces his genetic copy Air Jordan Z which sired, amongst others, Identity Vitseroel, Alfa Jordan, Australia and scores of 1m50/1m60 level showjumping horses. Air Jordan Alpha Z has a golden character which he passes on to his offspring. You can always count on him if you want to add size and power to your mare’s abilities.”

George Z “George Z, the highly promising son of the legendary Usha van ’t Roosakker, stood at the Stephex sport stables this winter and confirmed his sport qualities in the Belgian stallion competition. With unique relatives such as Electra van ’t Roosakker, Babbe van ’t Roosakker,

Cella, … the expectations of this stallion are extremely high. 2018 will be his last breeding season for a while at Studfarm Zangersheide, because after that he will further develop his sport career at Stephex.”

Aganix daughter. We were quite pleased with the way D’Aganix Z jumped under saddle. The stallion has a good canter, a fine technique and always throws a well-rounded jump. His jumping manners are very similar to those of Dominator. In a few weeks time, he can resume the work and will be available again to the breeders.”

D’Aganix Z “D’Aganix Z could unfortunately not be shown to the public. The stallion recently received surgery in connection with a slight colic and is recovering. D’Aganix was bought a year ago after the stallion selection because of his qualities and unique ancestry. After all, he was the first born from Dominator Z and this out of a young

Cornet’s Fire Z “I already said so last year, Cornet’s Fire Z seems to be a copy of his sire Comme Il Faut. You find their similarity not only in his type but also in his jumping manners and he also got his light-footed action from his sire. This has become even more pronounced since he goes under saddle. Cornet’s Fire Z is a compact stallion with a lot of

New stallions

Judy Ann and Christian have been very active during the stallion selection which makes that three new stallions could be added to the stallion catalogue of Studfarm Zangersheide. The oldest is Karmann 2000 Z, a half-brother to our dear Dominator Z. Like Dominator Z, also Karmann (Kannan) is a tall and sporty horse with a lot of blood. Under saddle he displays a superb technique, with a well-rounded jump. Anyone wanting to add size, sport qualities and blood, will do well to pick out Karmann for their mare.

During the first presentation of the stallion selection in Westfalia, Christian bought the Zangersheide-born Classic Orange Z from Patrick De Roeck. Classic Orange Z is an extremely handsome son of Cornet Obolensky out of the full sister of Coupe de Coeur, which under Philipp Weishaupt and Ludger Beerbaum booked the greatest successes. She is also a half-sister to Russel, who jumped at 1m60 level under Nick Skelton. Classic Orange Z has a very strong take-off

and displays a great deal of power. These qualities in combination with his blood and speed, make him a complete sport horse.

The newest acquisition of our studfarm is the Dutch Kazan. He was presented at the stallion selection by the combination Lamers and Van de Struis from Oss and immediately became one of the favourites of the public. This son of Baloubet du Rouet is a half-brother to the 1m60 level brothers Broken Heart (Jeffery Wellens) and Corleone (Martien Vander Hoeven). Last year Kazan’s half-sister Cereuza (Cornado II) was sold in the Z Quality Auction for the considerable sum of € 51,000 to the American Aliboo Farm. Judy Ann, who had been looking for the exclusive blood of Baloubet du Rouet for a while, acted promptly and managed to claim the stallion for the Zangersheide breeders. Kazan Z stands for blood and quality, of which he was bestowed with a double dose: Heartbreaker is both his sire and his dam’s sire.

Apollo Z “Apollo Z is a stallion that we bred ourselves. Both his sire Aktion Pur Z and dam Carlaya Z were horses that played an important role in my career. With Carlaya I jumped at the highest level and she has become one of our best broodmares. She is dam of Canasta Z, which performed at 1m60 level, and grandam of Christian’s Caribis Z, which won, amongst other achievements, the 5*GPs of St. Tropez and Hong Kong. She comes from the same family as As Cold as Ice Z. I wanted to give Aktion Pur Z a good chance in his first season with one of our best mares and picked out Carlaya Z, because I believe they make a good match. This resulted in Apollo Z. An incredibly handsome and well developed stallion that looks already adult as a 4-yr-old. He jumps very good time and again and, like his parents, he is a bold horse that is not easily impressed.”

Cascol Z “Cascol Z was bought as a foal from breeder Piet Janssen after we had earlier been successful with several horses from the same line, especially with the mare Charcolle Z, a sister of Cascol. He passed all the selection stages at our studfarm with success, both in free jumping and under saddle. As a 4-yr-old he was always jumping by the book and at the stallion selection last September he was one of the most remarkable appearances. This tall-framed son of Casall has an attractive pedigree and displays fine quality over the fence. He is a careful jumper with a perfect foreleg technique and a well-rounded jump. For mares that can do with a little more size, power and rounded jump Cascol Z could be a suitable partner.”

front who jumps the highest fence with the greatest ease. For a young stallion he is easy and pleasant to ride. I am convinced that this stallion, combined with a tall-framed mare, will produce genuine sport horses.”
