SMC PASTORAL WORKER It is inevitable that in a school the size of St Michael’s College, many of our students will experience the illness and/or death of a close family member or friend. Many of you are familiar with my involvement with the families of the school. I would like to invite you to call me if there is any assistance I can offer with bereavements, funerals or support for your families during illness or whether it be a visit or prayers. Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly via email [email protected] and/or mobile: 0432340268. With blessings. Sr Nithya - Pastoral Support Worker

MAD provides a unique Lasallian opportunity to raise money for our brothers and sisters who live in impoverished conditions. It is important that nomination forms are returned as soon as possible to ensure your child the best opportunity to secure their first activity preference. WELLBEING PRESENTATION On Wednesday 7 March, the Primary Campus hosted a parent engagement evening in Founders Hall. Over 65 parents attended the evening and were able to immerse themselves in a variety of activities that centred on wellbeing practices and the direction our students will be heading in, about resilience, student voice and leadership capacity during their primary years. It was wonderful to hear the thoughts from parents about the wellbeing programs currently offered at St Michael’s and to further inform them of the BOUNCE BACK Program that continues to further educate students about challenges they may experience in life and strategies to overcome them. The evening also provided the opportunity for parents across a range of year levels to get to know one another a little better. Mr Matt Rowlands - Director Student Wellbeing and Administration - Primary

X-RAY DONATIONS The Year 11 Drama class is working on their devised production, which will be staged in Week 11 of this term. As part of our set design we are seeking donations of old x-rays that are of no medical use anymore. These x-rays will have the names of the donators blanked out to ensure their privacy and the x-rays themselves will be far enough away that the audience will be unable to see details. Donations can be handed into the Secondary Campus front office. From all of us in the Year 11 Drama class, thank you for helping us and we hope to see you at the production in Week 11. Alexander Clark - 11PC-03

YEAR 8 CAMP On Wednesday 21 February, Year 8 students arrived at school, eagerly awaiting three days of outdoor activities and teamwork at one of the four locations: Camp Aldinga (Aldinga Beach), Ankara Youth Camp (Walker Flat), Woodhouse Activity Centre (Piccadilly) or C U at Wallaroo Camp (Wallaroo). On arrival, each camp were greeted by a team of energetic Active Education staff who launched students straight into fun and inclusive activities with a focus on building positive relationships. The camp offered students the chance to build on existing relationships within their Pastoral Class, develop new relationships with others, as well as strengthen the bond as a Year 8 community by offering a supporting role to one another through the activities and challenges. Students spent two nights at their camp, experiencing activities such as ‘attack and defend’, geocaching, bushwalking, paracord and bracelet making, Challenge Hill and laser tag at Woodhouse, Surf Safety at Aldinga, Kayaking/Canoeing at Ankara and Wallaroo, as well as various teacher-led activities in the evenings. Through undertaking these challenges, students were able to gain an appreciation of their ability to work together and support each other to complete aspects of the activities, as well as spending time enjoying each other’s company. A big thank you to all of the students for their attendance, participation, enthusiasm, and attitude on camp as well as the Year 8 Pastoral teachers and staff who took time away from their families to get to know the students in Year 8 as well as offer support to the students in their class.

YEAR 7 TECHNOLOGY CLASS – CUTTING BOARDS The Year 7 Technology class have finished their first project, which is a cutting board. The boys all had the opportunity to use the new SMC Laser Cutter to place an image of fruit and vegetables onto their boards. The students thoroughly enjoyed using this new $40,000 piece of technology. Such technology allows the student to produce professional looking projects, appreciate computer interfacing with machinery and use new technology.

Mr Tony Galpin – Design and Technology Teacher MUSIC FOCUS The Music Focus (previously Music Camp) was conducted over Thursday and Friday last week at the Secondary Campus. It is aimed at fast tracking the repertoire for the various co-curricular ensembles at St Michael's College. It comprises intensive rehearsals and sectionals with expert band leaders from across Adelaide as well as teachers within the music faculty itself. Music Focus is a fun, collaborative experience that prepares students for the expectations and discipline needed to achieve excellence in the performance Arts. It brings together like-minded students in a supportive and safe environment while empowering them to strive for their own personal goals as musicians.

YEAR 11 AND 12 WORK EXPERIENCE The deadline for returning the Workplace Learning Agreement Form and the Work, Health & Safety Checklist is Week 8, Friday 23 March. Please return to Ms Tidd in the VET Office. Please see Mr Vizaniaris or Mr Woolford if you have any questions.

INSIGHT INTO EMERGING CAREERS: GAMING ESPORTS Which industry has attracted a significant portion of new investment in West Lakes recently?...eSports! The Adelaide Crows have committed to a major investment in both facilities and development in a gaming team to participate in the upcoming eSport competitions. This provides a full time career path for highly skilled gamers. Team Legacy Play League of Legends will participate in the Oceania Pro League with prizemoney worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you are a parent of an outstanding gamer, a valid career path does exists for those shining in the types of games that make up eSports. The development of eSport playing arenas in Aelaide will create numerous jobs in IT, Hopsitality, Marketing etc. Recently a young Sydney boy called Marcus Gomes who was ranked very high on FIFA17 was identified by Melbourne City FC to represent them in the international FIFA competitions. Australia’s highest earning eSport player is Damien Chok (aka kpii) who plays for team Newbee, see article here. The story of local lad Scott Kennedy ‘Custa’ who is living in Dallas and earning a six figure salary is also an interesting read, see article here. As eSport is classified as a sport and players as athletes it removes many restictions normally placed on visas etc. There is even talk of adding eSport to the 2024 Olympics.

YEAR 12 PASTORAL ASSEMBLY CAREERS TALK This week we addressed the Year 12 students to cover a range of topics from career decision-making, SACE special provisions, calculating an ATAR, alternative pathways and most importantly fostering curiosity and an open mind. Students should now be aware of the concept of scaled scores used for University ATAR calculations and most importantly the differences in scaling patterns between various subjects. We encourage all students to make an appointment with one of the Career Counsellors to discuss how ATAR calculation works. We remind students that a string of B and B+ grades in particular subjects may not result in a competitive ATAR for an offer to a 2019 University course if these subjects traditionally exposed to higher scaling impacts. Students who are not eligible for an ATR in 2019 should have received a letter last week and we encourage these students to make an appointment to ensure their career planning is under way. There are wonderful pathway options for students doing non ATAR courses and the outcomes are enhanced with thorough preparation and planning, whether it be a TAFE pathway, apprenticeship or some alternative pathway. The PowerPoint is now on the Year 12 Portal and on the College Intranet under Student Services. Your son or daughter will need to access the PowerPoint to share with families.

CATHOLIC CO-ED AND SSSSA STATE SWIMMING CARNIVALS The swimming squad has been participating in Wednesday meets against various schools over the first few weeks of the term and have so far been successful in finishing second in three of these meets and finishing in first place against Immanuel College for the first time. A fantastic effort from the entire swimming group, well done! Along with these meets, the team has competed in the Catholic Co-Ed Swimming Carnival last week and the SSSSA State Championship Swimming Carnival this week. The team was very successful in Catholic Co-Ed Carnival managing to take out the U/14 Boys, U/14 Girls, and U/16 Boys age divisions at the Catholic Co-Ed Carnival. Well done to all our swimmers who competed fantastically on the night. This week we participated in the SSSSA C Grade State Championship Swimming Carnival against eight other schools from around the state. In an amazing performance from our swimming team, we managed to finish first in the boys, girls and overall divisions. We now go up a division to the B Grade Championships next year. A big thank you to all our swimmers with many of them swimming in higher age groups than their own and to the parents for their support and assistance with timekeeping. It has been great to see the team competing so strongly and with great enthusiasm.
