Jaime had a very good friend called Claudia with whom he was very much in love with.

Every time they were together he promised her the same thing.“ Claudia, when I grow up I will marry you”.

And every time she would ask him the same question:

“And what are you willing to do for me, then?”

And Jaime would say:

“Any thing”

Jaime couldn’t think of anything to impress her. One day after a lot of thought, he had an idea. When he saw each other next, he waited until she asked him the same question.

“And what are you willing to do for me, then?”“ I would like you to give me something very special”

Jaime thought for a while and finally he told her:

“If you like, I’ll give you the moon ¡”“Would you like that?”He asked her, sure that she would be delighted.

Claudia just laughed at him knowing that it was impossible.

But, Jaime loved her so much that he wouldn’t hesitate to full-fill his promise.So that night, after getting hold of a huge balloon, he climbed up to the Moon and asked her if she wouldn’t mind coming down to Earth and become a present for his friend.

The Moon listened to him and said:“You must love your friend very much but… Don’t you think you’ve gone too far promising Me as a present?”

“How did that happen?”“Can you imagine what the Sun would say if I go?“He is not going to allow me to go because he loves me and together we take turns to look after the Earth.”

Jaime listened carefully knowing that fulfilling his promise was going to be more difficult than he ever imagined.

The Moon continued saying.“Any way, don’t you know what would happen if I go with you?” “The night would be always dark, the stars would be lonely and the sea would never, ever forgive me since I am responsible for lowering and rising the tides.

Jaime went back to Earth very upset because he was not going to be able to fulfil his promise to Claudia

“What was she going to think of him!”

The following day when he met her again, he told her everything about his conversation with the Moon and all the reasons why he couldn’t give it to her.

But while he was talking he had an idea:

Claudia! If I cannot give you the Moon I can give you some stars instead!”

Claudia smiled.Surprised and exited at the same time.She loved gazing at the stars at night, so she answered:

“OK, but to show that you love me, you will have to bring me one star every week.”

Jaime accepted delighted, thinking that it wouldn’t be a problem getting few stars from the sky…. there were so many of them!

In consequence, that night he went up to the sky again on his big balloon, caught a star and left it in Claudia’s garden.

At seeing so much light, Claudia woke up and saw the star hanging from a tree.

Jaime had kept his promise!That showed how much he loved her.

Claudia thought

From then on every week she would find a new star in her garden.Claudia was so happy!

One night, Jaime went up to the sky to get his 9th star when he found something he didn’t expect.He saw a huge, shiny being appearing suddenly in front of him.“What are you doing here, boy?” it said.Jaime got so scared that he answered in a trembling voice.“I’ve come to get a star for my friend Claudia to show how much I love her.”

“Do you think because you are giving her stars she is going to love you more? ” it replied.

Jaime didn’t know what to say and he asked him.“And who are you?”

“I am the Sky’s gardener.” I am responsible for looking after all the stars, from the moment they are born till they don’t shine anymore.”“I must make sure they shine brightly at night and that they are in the right place in the sky”

“Lately, I’ve noticed that some of them had disappeared and I am a bit worried about it“. “Have you got anything to do with it?”

Jaime felt very guilty and said:“Well, ……… I…………promised Claudia I would give her the Moon and that couldn’t be possible since there is only one Moon in the sky and it is very busy.” “So, I promised her a star every week instead.“I thought, that as there are so many, nobody would notice it!”

“So. You are the one stealing my stars then!”

“And where are they now?”

The gardener asked him.

“They are in Claudia’s house. She looks after them very well. She keeps them in her garden. In that way they can see the rest of them in the sky.

The sky’s gardener told Jaime how each of the stars had a name and belonged to a family. That’s why since their disappearance, some of them cry and wonder in the sky in search of the others.

As they go from place to place they leave a trail of light with their tears. On Earth they are called “Shooting stars” because humans don’t know that the stars can cry too!

Jaime, deep in thought took a decision but he worried about what was his friend was going to think.

The sky’s gardener understood his feelings and said:

“Jaime, you’ve got millions of stars in your heart, you don’t need to come here to steal them.

“They are smaller but they are much brighter tan the ones in the sky”:

“Every time you smile you give us a star “

“Each kiss you give is a bright star for us”

“Every nice word, every friendly gesture, is a star that you give out and our heart receives.”

When he came back to Earth, Jaime told Claudia all the things the Gardener had told him.

Jaime was surprised to see how sad Claudia was at the thought of all the families of those stars she had in her garden. He imagined that she was going to be crossed with him, since he was not going to be able to give her more stars.

So, he gave her a kiss and said:

“Claudia, this is a star for you”

Her face turned bright red and she laughed, but she returned his kiss.

“Jaime, this kiss is a star for you!”

Jaime’s face went bright red too!

That night, the two of them went back to the sky to take all the stars back and to apologise for stealing them.

From then on, the two friends grew up happily, collecting stars in their hearts and gazing at them in the night sky, thinking how busy the gardener might be every single night looking after all the stars in the sky.
