Our advice for this coming year is to surround yourselves with an incredible group of of-ficers who really care about the success of your club. Take time to identify your talents within your membership. Some of your members are just waiting to be asked to be a part of your club’s success. In the long run you’ll have the much needed help. We truly remain united, work-ing to achieve the same goals. There really is a bigger picture and a brighter future when we all work together. Your report-ed numbers reflect another healthy year in the books. May you all have a very successful 2017! Sue Kermis PHIP, Dir of Membership [email protected]

Spring has sprung! Well, at least it has here in the Sonoran desert. We just wrapped up Spring Training and I was lucky enough to watch my life-long team, the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs, play two games. (Man, it feels good to be able to type the World Series part of that sentence!) It’s not just here that people are starting to get out more for some great events. March brought the New England Par-rot Head Convention, St. Min-neSomePlace’s This Hotel Room in Minneapolis, Music on the Bay in Tampa and Pi-rates In The Desert in Las Ve-gas. With April comes the 12th Annual Panama City Parrot Head Rendezvous, Angels in Tropical Shirts Music Fest in Texas, the 11th Annual Savan-nah PHC Scavenger Hunt, 27th Birthday Bash for the St. Louis PHC, and the San Diego Parrot Head Pub Crawl. Finally, One Particular Phlocking in New Jersey and the PHoPS 7th An-nual Pub Crawl & Poker Run in Tacoma are coming up in May. How do I know about all these great events? Well, I’ll let you in on my information sourcing secret. I know because the folks putting on the events A) put the event details on their respective PHiP Regional Cal-endars, B) talked the event up on the PHiP Club Leaders and Regional Yahoo Groups and C) posted about them on their Facebook pages (both club and regional).

That’s it! It’s easy-peasy to find out about what’s going on if people get the word out. So, consider this your annual re-minder to make your event “findable”. And, follow up when it’s done with results, sto-ries, pictures, etc. You want to make people think, “So glad I was there!” or “Dang, I’m sorry to have missed it so I’m putting in my calendar for next year.” Of course, the BIG event of the year. Meeting of The Minds, is on everyone’s agenda for No-vember. Right? Haven’t signed up yet? You can at http://www.phip.com/motmregistration. Hope to see you on the road somewhere this year! Kathy Pfister, President Parrot Heads in Paradise, Inc.

PRESIDENT’S PERCH PHIP INTERIM REPORTS

Just a reminder that with sum-mer comes Interim Reports, which are due beginning July 1st and must be received no later than July 31st. As always, these should be submitted electronically to [email protected] and labeled as INTERIM RE-PORT in your subject line. For new officers or new chap-ters, the Interim Report is simply a brief free-form synop-sis of your Club's charitable, civic and environmental activi-ties for the period 01/01/17 - 06/30/17. It should contain who, what, when & where and should provide a contact name, if appropriate. All Chapters must file an Interim Report ... If there is nothing to report, please so state. Reporting of volunteer hours donated is not required on Interim Re-ports. However, please continue to track these figures throughout the year ... Your cumulative annual totals are due with your Annual Renewal. As approved by the PHiP Board, effective 2008, there is a $100 penalty for any Chapter filing an Interim Report after 07/31/17. Please do not hesitate to con-tact my office with any ques-tions or concerns. Sue Kermis Director of Membership PHIP, Inc.

Parrot Head Club of Tidewater raises over $70,000 in 2016 for Walk to End Alzheimer’s® #1 Ranked Parrot Head Team

The Parrot Head Club of Tide-water was founded in 1996 by Andy and Bonnie Harrell. Throughout 20 years of philan-thropy for numerous national and local charities including the Alz-heimer’s Association, members have given back countless volun-teer hours helping to raise over a half million dollars. One of their largest fundraisers, the charity Beach Ball, raises money for the Alzheimer’s Association. Last year, the event raised over $67,000 and helped catapult this club to the #1 Parrot Head Walk to End Alzheimer’s team in the nation. This year’s sold-out event raised over $73,000. The event fea-tured live and silent auctions, live music, dinner, and a guest speaker, Karen Garner. Karen is a member of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Commission for Virginia and former caregiver to her late hus-band, Jim Garner. Jim, a retired Air Force senior master sergeant, was diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2011 and passed away in 2016. This momentous anniversary marks 20 years of support to help the Alzheimer’s Association ad-vance research focused on pre-venting and effectively treating Alzheimer’s disease as well as

sustaining free programs and ser-vices for families facing daily challenges of this insidious dis-ease.

“We, as a community, are mak-ing a difference. We, as a com-munity, are the hope that shines brightly for those navigating the maze of Alzheimer's disease. With the support of the Parrot Heads, we will see the day when some-one stands before us and says, ‘I am an Alzheimer's survivor’.” — Gino Colombara, Executive Di-rector Alzheimer’s Association Southeastern Virginia Chapter In 2016, 82 Parrot Heads clubs participated in Walk to End Alz-heimer’s events across the coun-try, raising over $230,000, which represented a 50 percent increase over 2015. Bob Noonan from the Chicago Parrot Heads Club took over as National Team Captain

and sent out a series of e-newsletters called “Walk Wednesdays.” This year, Bob is proud to continue serving in this role and hopes to get over 100 clubs participating and raise more than $250,000! To join the Parrot Heads Nation-al Team, simply visit alz.org/parrotheads and “start a team.” Your contributions will help support the Alzheimer’s Associ-ation and its chapters in commu-nities where you live across the country. It’s a great way to sup-port a cause that affects so many of our members, including the Buffett family. For more information, please contact Bob Noonan at [email protected]

San Antonio Parrot Head Club Featured on PHIP Website

San Antonio, Texas, is well known for The Alamo and the famous Riv-er Walk, but in 1998 when Garrett Van Delden, and several of his family and friends returned from a Jimmy Buffett concert in Las Ve-gas, energized and looking for a local parrot head club – there was none in San Antonio. They had been Jimmy Buffett fans for a long time and realized that they wanted to join the Parrot Heads in Paradise (PHIP) community and “Party with a Purpose". He gathered a small group of dedicated people, his fam-ily members and close friends to form the first Board of Directors for the San Antonio Parrot Head Club (SAPHC) in March 1999. Then they set out to grow the mem-bership and support for the commu-nity.

The SAPHC has two events a year on a consistent basis, the first being the club's anniversary party. This party is the biggest fund raiser of the year. We have a full band play because our members love to dance. It includes a silent auction and other raffles for other donated items. This event supports the San Antonio Food Bank and we also collect non-perishable food for them. We just concluded our 2017 event and though totals are not in yet, it was very successful for us. The other annual event that we have is our “Survive" weekend on the Texas coast for our members. We take about 150 club members and family about 170 miles to the coast for a three day event to “get away and unplug". We have live music, provide food, activities at the host hotel pool, a bonfire on the beach and other beach activities. We have several fun contests as well. Keeping this in “the family" has fostered a sense of closeness and comradery between members

which benefits the club all year round. Any money collected above expenses goes to the Alz-heimer's Association. This has helped us be among the top ten Alzheimer's Walk Teams in PHIP and locally.

While SAPHC supports numer-ous charities throughout the year, we have a strong tradition of helping the San Antonio Food Bank in a variety of ways. Quar-terly, we have a Food Bank work day and work packing and sort-ing food items to be distributed to families in the local area. Ad-ditionally, we always have a team for their Great Turkey Challenge, a 5K walk/run on Thanksgiving Day. One of our continuing efforts for the last seven years is supporting the County Line Music Series at the County Line Bar-b-q off IH-10. Every Thursday evening from Apr-Aug we gather at the County Line and collect both food and monetary donations for the Food Bank. Our efforts have not gone unrecognized as we were the 2011 Food Bank Volunteer

Group of the year. Additionally, nominated by the Food Bank to the United Way, we won the 2014 San Antonio United Way Volunteer Group of the Year for our continu-ing support of the Food Bank.

We have a great core membership group that works together plays together well. Though members come and go, we have some that love to volunteer for our charities and others that come for the social connections. We were fortunate to win the PHIP Golden Coconut Award in 2009 and feel we still embody those qualities that made us worthy of the award. No matter what the activity, we always have fun - even when picking up trash, sorting food, collecting donations, wrapping and delivering presents or listening to great music – we've been told that we always bring “the party" to whatever we are doing. We also have members that love to travel and support many other par-rot head clubs and events, and you can usually pick us out from the crowd!

Thinking about entering the Golden Coconut Contest?? PHIP Director ofMembership will be-gan accepting entrieson July 1st!! Entries for the 2017 Golden Co-conut Award of Excellence, pre-sented by a representative of Margaritaville, Inc., will be ac-cepted via email from July 1st until August 30th, 2017. For all the new clubs and new leader's out there, here's a little history lesson: In 1996, Margari-taville and ParrotHeads In Para-dise, Inc. decided tocreate an award to be given to a deserving Parrot Head Club, emblematic and in recognition of the out-standing Charitable and Environ-mental efforts of ALL Parrot Head Clubs. Today, competition for the cov-eted award is waged through a "blind essay" submitted to an illustrious panel of judges com-posed of previous Golden Coco-nut Award recipients. If your club hasn't entered or has entered in the past and didn't win, then you should submit a first time entry or enter again!!! Did you know: * Many clubs who submit a blind essay for the contest have sub-mitted an essay before * Many clubs don't enter because they think it's based on member-ship or fundraising numbers. NOT TRUE!! Here are a few hints that might help: 1. BE CREATIVE!! (if it looks boring & not fun to read and it

really has nothing but fundrais-ing figures, it's probably going to get a low score). Make it fun to read! We know you all are creative out there! You show your creativity in your concert attire, tailgating, event decorations and events! Put that same creativity to paper!! 2. Read last year's winning essay, as well as previous winning essays!! They are posted at: http:// www.phip.com/club-winners Use their creativity as a Guide-line! 3. You can't win if you don't enter!! The Golden Coconut Award is like winning the Lot-tery of PHIP and gives your club membership into a very unique and small group of Clubs who use their win to their advantage! You have bragging rights to use on your website, on your club merchan-dise! You know you love to talk about your club to anyone who will listen!! Imagine tell-ing a potential sponsor of your event or club that your club is a Golden Coconut Winner and then explaining what it stands for!! We know you can be loud & proud .. put that spir-it down on paper!! 4. Follow the rules!! Yes, we gotta have some stinkin' rules ... (as all contests do). (see rules below) 5. Don't have time to write a blind essay to submit?? I would be willing to bet that you have someone in your club who is a creative writer! Tap them as a resource!! There is

NO rule that the Golden Coco-nut SUBMISSION must be written by a Club's Officer, the GC just needs to be submitted by the club's contact!! Some-times a member who would love to contribute in some way just needs to be asked! 6. Every chapter, with the ex-ception of previous Golden Coconut recipients after 2011, regardless of size or age, has an equal opportunity to win this most coveted designation! CONTEST CLOSES AU-GUST 30th, 2017. THE RULES: * All clubs, with the exception of previous Golden Coconut recipients after 2011 are eligi-ble to enter the contest * Entries must be received by this office no later than August 30th, 2017 * Entries received after 8/30 will be returned unopened * Electronic submissions, in MSWORD format, are accepta-ble and encouraged * Entry is to be by blind essay – No recognizable references to club name, city, state, local charities, etc. may be included. Entries with any discernable reference will be returned to the author for editing, if time allows

Did you know there’s a Featured Club page on the Parrot Heads in Paradise website? Well, now you do! It can be found at https://www.phip.com/featured and is cur-rently featuring the San Antonio PHC. Past posts have been on the San Diego PHC, Chicago PHC, Virtual PHC and several other very

worthy clubs. This feature is a great way to not only be recognized by the Parrot Head world but also a good re-cruiting tool for your club. Imag-ine saying to prospective mem-bers, “We’re being directly pro-moted by our National organiza-tion! Check it out!”

Think your club is awesome and worthy of its own spot-light? I’m pretty sure you’re right so send me a note at [email protected] and we’ll talk. Thanks for par-ticipating! Kathy Pfister President, PHiP, Inc.

FINS WAY UP to all of you that “Partied with a Purpose” this past quarter! To be included in this list you need to post on the PHiP Club Leader’s Yahoo groups lists when you have a charitable or community service activity. Or you can send an email direct to me at [email protected]. Some clubs write a short “quarterly report” or recap of their activities and post or send that to share their accomplishments. If you post on a facebook page, please copy the in-formation and put it in an email to send out - not everyone is on facebook and newsfeeds do not reach everyone!
