The Mission of The Sterling Hall School is to offer a secure environment for the education of

boys in mind, body and spirit. Our supportive community and small classes nurture and challenge

our students to become critical thinkers, self-directed learners and successful contributors.

The 2008 / 2009 school year is now under way and, in my fourth year as your Chair, I continue to beinspired by the talented and committed members of the Board of Governors with whom I am hon-oured to serve. This past year our Board committees have been particularly active in their variousresponsibilities.

Despite our Governance Committee being relatively recently established, we are making greatstrides in this area. The committee has been looking at best practices as identified by the CanadianIndependent School community to ensure that SHS achieves excellence in all levels of governance.Through the leadership of Sally Hannon, our goal has been to maintain our unique school culture andenhance our Board’s effectiveness. Good governance practices allow us to make effective decisionswith a focus on getting things done with the least amount of road blocks.

This year marked the official close of our very successful “Discover the Future” capital campaign.This campaign led to the creation of The Discovery Centre which provides facility excellence in theareas of science, art, technology, and music. These new facilities have enhanced our sons’ educationalexperience and also provided our teachers with superior tools and classroom environments in whichto teach. Our capital projects do not exist in order for us to build for building’s sake and are muchmore than bricks and mortar. Our facilities’ expansions have always focused on providing our boyswith what they need to prepare them for their futures. Congratulations to Bill Wilder and hisAdvancement team for a very successful campaign. We are pleased to welcome David Fleck and JeffMoody as the newest members of this committee. We also welcome Maria Jordan to her new roleas Executive Director of Advancement and are excited by the energy and enthusiasm she brings toour school in this important role.

Through the direction of Perry-Anne Lupyrypa, the Strategic Planning Committee has struck TheSterling Hall Secondary School (SHSS) Task Force. This task force has been conducting surveys andmeeting with constituents; all with the goal of determining the feasibility of a high school for our com-munity. Their focus continues to be its economical sustainability as well as the effect a secondaryschool may have on our current programs and the overall SHS experience. The Strategic PlanningCommittee was also instrumental in the development of the SHS Strategic Plan. As a board, we con-tinue to implement and execute the direction set by the plan.A copy of the SHS Strategic Plan is avail-able via the school website. We welcome new Board member Alison McDonald to this committee.

Working closely with the SHSS Task Force, the Property Committee, headed by DeniseMacDonald, continues to look for ways to adapt the use of the adjacent land and how it may enhancethe future of our school. The purchase of this land was a strategic decision of the Board made inorder to give us options for the future, although no immediate plans have been determined.

Eric Lo and his team continue to ensure that our technology platform is a useful aid to learning andassists in the education of our boys. Our philosophy on technology is to learn from other educationalinstitutions and adopt only those pieces that we feel are useful for our specialized teaching methods.

Despite the current unfavourable economic trends, The Sterling Hall School remains in excellentfinancial position, as the pages in this Annual Report reveal. Under the stewardship of the Chair ofthe Finance Committee, John Stevens, we have been able to manage our funds in a fiscally responsi-ble way. Your Board is acutely aware of our need to be financially accountable to our constituents.As we continue to look to the future, our focus is to have the resources available to ensure the con-tinued financial health of SHS no matter what growth profile we pursue. We are pleased to welcomeRobert Poile to the Finance Committee and look forward to his contributions.

As we continue to grow, the faces of our school continue to change. I would like to welcome thenewest members to the Board of Governors: Roberto Drassinower, Jeff Moody and Alison McDonald.We look forward to their valuable input in the coming year and beyond.

I extend a very special thank you to our departing Board Members, Ken Gordon and Donna Poile,who throughout the years have demonstrated dedication, effectiveness and affection for The SterlingHall School.

“What we think, or what we know, or what we believe is in the end of little consequence. The onlyconsequence is what we do.” This quotation is attributed to John Ruskin and although it perhapspaints too broad a picture, there is nonetheless some strong truth associated with its intent.

Which takes us directly to what the role of education and good schooling is in these early 21stCentury years. It has become clearer and clearer to most that the pouring of knowledge into stu-dents’ heads anticipating that this will guide them through their lives is no longer appropriate. Andyet, regurgitating of facts remains in too many schools which should be spending their time develop-ing skills in their students. The ability to think for oneself and to think critically, to present an argu-ment clearly, to understand how to communicate with others and work closely as a member of ateam – these are examples of skills and attitudes that become more and more profound as our worldshrinks and contact with those who might be unfamiliar becomes more the daily expectation. It reallyis no longer what you know that counts; it is rather how you use what you know and who or whatyou are that dominate. There is no question that these qualities should be the secret potion replac-ing mundane translations, dates in history or arcane chemical formulae which all have their place butin today’s world, they are relegated to the back burner – where they belong.

Today’s approach to education demands curriculum that is transparent, authentic and relevant andteachers who believe implicitly in the philosophy espoused above. At SHS, we are fortunate indeedto have a wonderful team of teachers who are passionate, enthusiastic and encouraging and enjoycoming to work every day. Or so they tell me! Put them with a strong community, good studentsstriving to better themselves and facilities and programs that have evolved beautifully over the years –I assure you that there’s something going right in our halls. Let me also assure you that we do contin-ually reassess what we are doing as we attempt to offer the best experience that we can to your sons.

Every year, a considerable sum is spent by The Sterling Hall School offering ProfessionalDevelopment opportunities to the Faculty. The chart on the pages that follow highlights our Faculty’srecent participation – all activities promote “best practices” and enrich the professional lives of ourteachers and thus your sons. Out of the many areas that could have been selected, I chose two: 1. Presenting workshops at conferences and 2. Special opportunities and achievements in education.The lists are quite remarkable and speak loudly to the interested and talented teachers with whomI am fortunate to work and who teach your sons.

I also wish to draw your attention to the recently published first SHS Strategic Plan. Two StrategicReports came out in 1997 and 2001, but they were not plans in that they did not project into thefuture. They concerned the current school and its origins. But by this year, SHS was most definitelyready for a Strategic Plan.

Do please read and enjoy our Strategic Plan – a document with initiatives, goals and strategies thatshould endure for five or more years. And then it will be time for the second edition – taking SHSup to and beyond the 2013 date referred to in the plan. Many deserve to be mentioned for their

work but I shall single out three. Perry-Anne Lupyrypa (mother of Aiden, Garet and Brennan) chairsthe Strategic Planning Committee of the Board of Governors, having taken over the reins from ReidBowlby (father of graduates Chris and Matthew and current student Scott). These two were the forcebehind the creation of much of the text. The draft version was then handed over to Cathy Reeves.She honed the text and created the structure, the production, the layout and the format of what youread; a huge job and done masterfully. All three of these members of our community deserve ourmost sincere thanks.

As you know, we have five new teachers this year, a new nurse and Maria Jordan, who has suc-ceeded Cathy Reeves and is capably leading the Advancement team. One other upcoming change isthat Dr. Barb Smith will be leaving us during the Winter Break in order to spend more quality timewith her family. Barb has made a huge contribution to SHS as Vice-Principal Academic Program andshe will be succeeded in January by Leslie-Anne Dexter who has been working very closely with herfor some years. They have spearheaded the curricular growth of our school and encouraged the manySHS teachers who are involved in Action Research, which through in-school research promotes effec-tive methodologies for teaching and learning and produces genuine data to support academicprogress. With collaboration from many Toronto and international schools, the conclusions are help-ing to promote best practices in boys’ education.

Let me finish with a quotation that sums up well what we are all trying to do. It was the authorand ex-Governor General of Canada, John Buchan, who said: “We can only pay our debt to the pastby putting the future in debt to us.” So, so true.

Another school year is upon us and since our last report there have been some significant changeswhich I wish to highlight.

Firstly, Cathy Reeves, Executive Director of Advancement for the past 14 years, retired at the endof the 2007/2008 school year. She made an outstanding contribution to the SHS community through-out the years and will be especially remembered for her love of our school and her work to greatlyenhance our facilities. We all wish her the best in her new pursuits.

Secondly, I wish to inform our community that the Discover The Future campaign has officiallycome to a close. This campaign resulted in the creation of The Sullivan Music Centre, The Poile ArtStudio, The Pryde Science Lab and The Cisco Computer Room. Through the generosity of TheSterling Hall School community, we were able to raise $4.1 million of our $4.2 million campaign.This was a wonderful achievement – thank you. These new facilities not only enhance the estheticsof our school but more importantly they have enhanced the programming for our boys. TheSullivan Music Centre fosters in the students a more professional mindset about their rehearsalswhich helps them achieve at a higher level. The Pryde Science Lab allows the boys to have moreexperiential hands-on learning. And the Poile Art Studio provides a large, open and sunny space forstudents to explore a variety of media, from clay to painting, with plenty of space to experiment.The studio’s proximity to the technology room allows the boys access to merge technology withart. This is truly an inspiring space to host Independent School Art Conferences, our Visiting Artist’sProgram, workshops and special events.

Thirdly, our main focus for the 2008/2009 school year will be on our Annual Giving Campaign,with a goal of $250,000. Mary Dawn Thomson and Mike Boland, who currently have three boys atSHS, are leading the campaign and I am confident they will do a stellar job. This year the campaignalso introduces various recognition benefits for your generous contributions.

Finally, I would like to welcome Maria Jordan as the new Executive Director of Advancement toThe Sterling Hall School. Maria brings with her 18 years of fundraising and communications experi-ence, most recently in the Independent School environment. I am certain that she will do a great jobin this role.

In closing, I would like to thank you, The Sterling Hall School community, for your continued finan-cial support. Through your gifts you demonstrate your commitment to providing our boys with whatthey need to flourish in our school environment. Thank you.

Marc Boyman Marc Boyman joined theBoard in 2005 and sits on theProperty, Building andMaintenance Committee.Marc graduated in Engineeringat the University of Torontoand obtained an MBA at theSchulich School of Business atYork University. After working

as a management consultant at the CBC and theOntario Arts Council, he directed and producedtelevision shows and several major motion picturesin Toronto and Hollywood which have won anAcademy Award and several Genie Awards. He alsohas interests in a family real-estate business. Marcis a recipient of the Arbor Award from theUniversity of Toronto for his contribution to thefilm department. Marc and his wife Tiana have foursons who have all attended SHS: Daniel is at TheUniversity of Western Ontario, Jack is at McGill,Alex is at Crescent School and Julian is at UCC.

Roberto Drassinower Roberto Drassinower joinedthe Board in 2008 and sits on the Strategic Planning andInformation Technology com-mittees. Roberto is CEO ofBrandimensions, a Torontobased technology company,

and a principal at DME Consulting Inc., a manage-ment consulting and M&A advisory firm. Prior tothat Roberto served as CEO of SoftQuad SoftwareLtd., an early pioneering company of World WideWeb technology, and President of Carolian Systems,a network management solutions company. Hebegan his career as a software engineer. Robertoand his wife Emei have two children, Alexandra inGrade 8 at Claude Watson School for the Arts andNathan in Grade 5 at SHS.

Sally HannonSally Hannon is theChair of the GovernanceCommittee. Sally has an LL.B.from Osgoode Hall LawSchool and practised realestate, municipal and land useplanning law at Osler, Hoskin& Harcourt and subsequentlyat Elstons Lawyers LLP.

Currently, Sally has her own law practice and is adirector of Delhi-Solac Inc., a family owned manu-facturer of mechanical and coated steel tubing. Sallyhas been a Director of Osgoode Hall Law School'sAlumni Association, Chair of the Junior Committeeat the Art Gallery of Ontario and a Director ofSenior People's Resources in North Toronto(SPRINT). Sally and her husband Howard Bartonhave two sons, Will and Spencer; both are SHS OldBoys now at RSGC.

Kris Isberg Kris Isberg is a member ofthe Property Committee. Krisis the owner and President ofK.P. Isberg Construction, areal estate development com-pany. He has been engaged inhigh-end residential construc-tion and development inToronto for over 30 years

and in Mexico for the last 5 years. Kris and his wifeMargaret have two children; Duff, who graduatedfrom SHS in 2008 and is now at Crescent School, andhis daughter Jessie, who is in Grade 8 at Havergal.

Eric LoEric Lo joined the Board in2003 and is Chair of theTechnology Committee. Healso sits on the Executive andNominating Committee. Ericobtained his Masters Degreeof Business Administration atYork University and was VP of

System Development at MSR Inc. before foundinghis own information consulting firm – GENXSolutions. Eric is President of the firm. Eric and hiswife Joanie Tong have two children; Alex, in Grade 4at SHS, and Kevin, who is now at UCC after nineyears at SHS.

Perry-Anne LupyrypaPerry-Anne Lupyrypa is Chairof the Strategic PlanningCommittee and The SterlingHall Secondary School TaskForce Committee. She andher husband Allen have 3 boysat SHS: Aiden in Grade 8,Garet in Grade 4, and

Brennan in Grade 2. They also have a daughterKaelyn at Branksome Hall. For the past ten yearsPerry has been an active volunteer at her children'sschools and within her community. Prior to that,she had a career in marketing, having held variouspositions with Everfresh/Allen's Juices and Procterand Gamble Inc. Perry-Anne obtained an HonoursB.Comm from the University of Manitoba.

Denise MacDonald Denise MacDonald joinedthe Board in September2006. She is Chair of theProperty Committee.Denise graduated from theUniversity of WesternOntario where she obtainedher Masters in Business

Administration (MBA) in 1989 and her Honours inBusiness Administration (HBA) in 1986. For 14years Denise worked in commercial real estate inthe development, financing and marketing fields forManulife Financial and Dundee RealtyCorporation. She was President of the TorontoChapter of Real Estate Women's Board in 2002and was active on the board for 5 years. For thepast 5 years she has been the Chief FinancialOfficer for a family owned and operated retailwomen's clothing business. Denise is married toCameron MacDonald and they have two sons; Eric,who graduated from SHS last year and is now atCrescent School, and Jack, in Grade 2 at SHS, and adaughter, Sarah, at Havergal College.

Alison McDonald Alison McDonald joined theBoard of Governors in 2008and is a member of theStrategic Planning Committee.Alison has been an active volunteer at Sterling Hall andserved as President of theSHS Parents Association in2007/08. After graduating

from Queen's University with a B.A. Honours inPolitical Studies, Alison pursued a career in sportstelevision. She held various positions at The SportsNetwork (TSN), acted as the Producer andExecutive Producer of the weekly series “Be aPlayer! The Hockey Show”, and fulfilled the role of Television and Media Director for the NationalHockey League Players' Association (NHLPA).Since 2001, Alison has focused her energies onvarious volunteer jobs, many of which involve thearts. Alison and her husband Bruce have a son,Jack, in Grade 7 at SHS and a daughter, Zoë, inGrade 4 at Havergal.

Jeff MoodyJeff Moody joined the Boardof Governors in 2008. He isa graduate of the Universityof Western Ontario and hasspent the last 23 years in theinvestment business. Jeff iscurrently one of the principalsof Gluskin Sheff andAssociates, a wealth manage-

ment firm for high net worth individuals. Jeff wasalso a member of the Canadian National SailingTeam from 1984 to 1988 and remains an avid sailorand ski racer. Jeff and his wife Joanne have two chil-dren; Samantha in Grade 6 at Havergal andChristopher in Grade 4 at SHS.

Alison Noble Alison Noble is a member ofthe Governance Committeeand is the Board's representa-tive on the "SHS GreenSchool" team. She has aB.Eng. in Electrical andComputer Engineering fromUniversity of Michigan, and an

M.B.A. from Harvard. She has worked as a businessstrategy consultant and in software developmentfor both a Medical Imaging and Internet Gatewaycompany. Alison and her husband Jason Marks havetwo sons; Eric, in Grade 7 at SHS and SHS Old BoyAdam, who is in Grade 9 at Crescent School.

Robbie PrydeRobbie Pryde is in his fourthyear on the Board and is amember of the AdvancementCommittee and served as amember of the Discover TheFuture Campaign Cabinet.Robbie is Vice-Chair andHead of Global Origination

and Institutional Equities at TD Securities, havingjoined TD Securities in 2000 when the companypurchased Newcrest Capital where he had been aFounding Partner and Managing Director. Prior tohelping found Newcrest, he worked at NesbittBurns for 11 years. Robbie holds a BA in Economicsfrom UWO as well as his CFA designation (1994).He is also a member of TD Securities ManagementCommittee and the TDSI Board of Directors.Robbie and his wife Laura have a daughter atHavergal and a son, Cooper, in Grade 4 at SHS.

John StevensJohn Stevens joined the Boardin 2004 and is the Chair ofthe Finance Committee. Healso sits on the GovernanceCommittee and played a keyrole in the founding of TheSterling Hall School'sFoundation. He is a Trusteefor the school on the

Foundation Board. John is Executive Vice Presidentand a Director of Arva Limited (a private equityinvestment company owned by him and the mem-bers of his immediate family). John is an Ontarioqualified lawyer and, prior to joining Arva on a fulltime basis in June 2000, he was a partner in theCanadian law firm of Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt andfrom 1994 to 2000 was Managing Partner of thefirm's New York office. He is also a charteredaccountant. John and his wife Kathy have three chil-dren; Jack in Grade 6 and William in Grade 4 at SHSand a daughter Katie, who attends Branksome Hall.

Kevin SullivanKevin Sullivan is Chairman ofthe Board of Governors. Heis a founding partner andChief Executive Officer ofGMP Securities L.P. and hasbeen involved in capital mar-kets in Canada and abroadfor many years. Prior to hiscareer in the capital markets,

Kevin was a lawyer in general practice in Calgary,Alberta, having been called to the Bar in 1984.Kevin and his wife Sandra have four children. Ty isin Grade 2 at SHS; Jack and Thomas are SHS gradu-ates. Thomas attends Saddlebrook PreparatorySchool in Florida, Jack attends Crescent, and theirdaughter Zoë attends Havergal. Kevin has beenactive in many charitable endeavours and has activeor past roles on the Boards of the Princess MargaretHospital Foundation, Right to Play, and the CanadianFilm Centre.

J. Arnold Temple Arnie Temple sits on theStrategic Planning Committeeof the Board. He set up achange management consult-ing practice after retiring fromthe Ontario Public Service inlate 2006 after 35 years ofservice. He was awarded theAmethyst Award for

Excellence in Public Service and the first J. A. TempleMentor of the Year recipient. As an Assistant DeputyMinister, Business Management, he was responsiblefor the planning and management of Strategic,Financial, Facilities, Information Technology, Audit,Legal and Human Resources services. He served asChair of the Residential Tenancy Commission, theRent Review Hearings, and Ontario HousingCorporation Boards. In addition to his consultingpractice, Arnie has been an active volunteer withinthe community. Arnie and his wife Betsy Mills have ason James who is in Grade 5 at SHS.

Steven Tuchner Steven Tuchner serves on theAdvancement Committee ofthe Board of Governors andwas a member of theDiscover The FutureCampaign Cabinet. Stevereceived his B.Sc. from theUniversity of WesternOntario and his MBA fromthe Schulich School of

Business. He obtained his CA designation whileworking with Ernst & Young and is currently CEOof Triumph Asset Management. Steve has been anactive volunteer in the community. He is a formermember of the Budget and Finance Committee andis currently a member of the Resources Committeeat Mount Sinai Hospital. He is former Co-Chair ofthe UJA Finance Committee and former Co-Chairof the Sick Kids Finance Committee. Steve and hiswife Debra have three children; Jack, in Grade 4 atSHS, Brent at UCC, and their daughter Paigeattends Branksome Hall.

Greg Watson Greg Watson joined theBoard of Governors in 2007and is a member of theFinance Committee. He hasworked with the FinanceCommittee since 2005. Gregis a Partner inPricewaterhouseCoopersand most recently as the

A Farewell Tribute to Cathy Reeves, Executive Director of Advancement

It would be difficult to explain in full the contribution that Cathy Reeves made at SHS. She spent14 years shaping many parts of the school and her hard work is evident not only in the new build-ings that we are so proud of but in the 2008 Strategic Plan, the various events that dot the schoolcalendar, the calendar itself and other items too numerous to mention. Her sense of communitywas contagious. As a “people person”, Cathy’s influence extended to the Parents Association, theAdvancement Committee, the Board of Governors and of course to her passion and joy – the boys.As den mother and shoulder to comfort when necessary, she was constantly sought out by boysneeding advice, help and a friendly hug. Cathy was a fine, involved colleague and friend of SHS and sheworked tirelessly – our school owes her a great deal. We celebrate her retirement in the knowledgethat she will continue to be active in many endeavours.

The Sterling Hall School completed another solid financial year in June, 2008. An increase in the excessof revenue over expenses combined with strong support from the School’s fundraising efforts increasedthe net assets of the School from $10,553,708 at June 30, 2007 to $11,312,013 at June 30, 2008.

The school continues to enjoy a strong and stable financial position due to a combination of near capac-ity enrolment, sound financial management and the ongoing support received from an active and caringSHS community. This financial strength enables the School to continually improve and upgrade its programs, buildings and grounds and to pursue the implementation of the recently adopted Strategic Plan.

Again, it has been my pleasure to serve on the Finance Committee this year. I would like to thankall the other members for their continued contributions; Bart Bull, Greg Watson, Ian Robinson andKiran Little.

The Sterling Hall School Foundation

The Sterling Hall School Foundation was established in 2005 as a public foundation to support finan-cially the activities of the School and to provide financial security for its future.

The Foundation receives assets, whether donor directed or otherwise, to support a broad rangeof the School’s requirements.

Through the efforts of the Advancement Committee and the generosity of The Sterling HallSchool community, the Foundation raised over $800,000 in the year ending June 30, 2008.

The Foundation manages the funds under its administration with a view to both the short andlonger term needs of the School and as at June 30, 2008 the total net assets of the Foundationexceeded $1 million. During the year, the Foundation interviewed a number of investment manage-ment firms with a view of having the Foundation’s assets managed by a third party. Cranston, Gaskin,O’Reilly and Vernon were chosen by the Foundation to be investment managers. At year end all ofthe Foundation funds were invested in short term instruments available to support any immediateneeds of the School. As the funds under management grow, it is the Foundation’s intention to diver-sify its investments into other securities.

With the goal of the Foundation to financially support the activities of the School and to providefinancial security for its future, the Board of the Foundation consists of Directors that have a deepknowledge of both the School and investments. The Directors of the Foundation are:

Annual GivingAll Annual Giving contributions are used to enhance every aspect of learning and teaching. With sup-port from our community, we can continually add to each and every boy's experience at SHS. AnnualGiving makes up the difference between what tuition covers and the actual cost of running ourschool. Such gifts are usually unrestricted (meaning that donors allow the school to spend the fundson what it deems necessary).

This year Annual gifts were directed to the following priorities: The Sterling Priority Fund, Arts &Languages, Athletics, Homeroom Enhancements and Science & Technology.

Gifts-in-KindGifts of goods are accepted on a case-by-case basis. These gifts are appraised by an independent thirdparty and receipted for fair market value. This year,The Sterling Hall School gratefully accepted gifts-in-kind that ranged from furniture to hockey team track suits.

Scholarships

The Robert Burns Memorial Scholarship Value as at June 30, 2008 $19,793

This Scholarship was started in 2000 to honour the memory of the late Dr. Robert Burns, a distin-guished member of the Sterling Hall community. This scholarship is awarded annually to boys whoexhibit a passion for learning and a commitment to excellence in all interests. The boys must alsoshow promise following the example of Dr. Burns. This year’s recipient was Sam Harris.

SHS Faculty / Staff Scholarship Fund Value as at June 30, 2008 $46,454

Annual Giving donations from SHS Faculty and Staff are directed to a Scholarship Fund for boysfrom Grades 4 – 7 who have attained an 80% average or are on the Honour Roll/AcademicAchievement List. In addition, the boys who receive this award are all-around participants in schoollife and have displayed resilience, independence and responsibility. This year’s recipients were AidenLupyrypa and Matthew Stuart.

The Mrs. Reeves Scholarship Value as at June 30, 2008 $32,275

The Mrs. Reeves Scholarship was established in June 2008 and is awarded to a boy who has truepotential but just needs encouragement to believe in himself. Mrs. Reeves, former Executive Directorof Advancement at SHS, always saw the “good” in every boy and this award is a statement of theschool’s belief in the recipient. Prizes are awarded to Grades 3 – 7 boys in order for the award totake effect during the recipient’s remaining time at Sterling Hall. 2009 will be the first year that thisscholarship is awarded.

In the 2007/08 school year, the Parents Association (PA) at Sterling Hall continued to function as avibrant and productive group of dedicated, enthusiastic and proactive parents. Over 70% of SHSfamilies volunteered, demonstrating not only the parents’ deep commitment to the school and to theboys, but also the school’s desire for parent involvement. At SHS, parents’ contributions are valuedand welcomed, resulting in an extremely rewarding and fulfilling volunteer experience.

The PA was created to coordinate parent volunteers and fulfill its mandate to promote spirit andgoodwill within the community; provide a useful service to the community; and act as a liaison betweenthe school and the community. Every current parent is a member of the SHS Parents Association.

Throughout the 2007-2008 school year, the PA provided volunteer support for: Shark Shop;Library; Lost and Found; Art Program; Interguild; Grade Reps; Communication Coordination; GreenThumbs; and Community Service. The PA also undertook a number of special events including monthlypizza days, Pumpkin Patch, Terry Fox BBQ, STERLING HALLiday Sale, Faculty/Staff Tribute Assemblyand Luncheon, Interguild Parent Events, Used Uniform Sales, Bingo Bash, New Family Buddies,Olympic Picnic Lunch, and the year-end Faculty/Staff Appreciation Lunch.

The SHS Parents Association’s high level of involvement benefits not only the services and eventsoutlined above, but also the school culture in general. A healthy PA is an important contributor tothe sense of community, the atmosphere of inclusion, and the abundance of spirit that makes TheSterling Hall School so special.

We thank all families who volunteered throughout the year; it was a pleasure to work with youtoward a common goal. On behalf of the Parents Association, I would like to thank the AdvancementOffice for their constant support and thoughtful guidance. Moving forward, I am confident that theParents Association will continue to thrive under the outstanding leadership and expertise of AdrienneWaterman, 2008-2009 PA President, and Neri Slan, 2008-2009 Vice President.
