September 30, 2011 saw the College celebrate the Fourth Annual Chancellor’s Gala at the Sutton Place Hotel in Edmonton. It was a wonderful night of dining and dancing. New friends and old friends joined in the festivities. An energized game of Heads or Tails infused the ballroom with waves of laughter as the suspense heightened. Lively bidding on items in the auction room increased the fun. Some guests danced the night away to the music of the C-Jam Big Band, and a good time was had by all. The goal of the Gala shifted from that of previous years. The first three galas raised funds for the Accessibility Project which was completed in the summer of 2011. The funds raised from the Fourth Gala were targeted to help meet needs in education, infrastructure, and endowments. Recognizing that we can only do great things when we work together and in appreciation for the community’s support of the College, we decided to “Reach Out”. For that reason, two stations were set up in the silent auction room at the Gala, one for donations to be shared with Bissell Centre and the other for donations to be shared with The Mustard Seed Church. Our connections with those two organizations include the conferring on Shelley Williams, immediate past Executive Director of Bissell Centre, an honorary degree in 2008, and The Mustard Seed as a practicum site for one of our students. Thank you to all those who purchased tickets or tables for the Gala, donated silent and live auction items, and sponsored parts of the event. We are grateful to Hole’s Greenhouses’ sponsorship for the beautiful table centre pieces, and to TBJ Partners Event & Productions Management for their work and support. We look forward to the continued enthusiastic support for this important fundraiser.

4th Annual Chancellor’s Gala a huge success!

THANK YOU, MONA-LEE! We recognize with great appreciation the work of Gala Committee Chair, Dr Mona-Lee Feehan who contributes so much to the success of our Chancellor’s Galas. (Photo: Mona Lee Feehan with husband, Kevin Feehan, Chancellor of Newman Theological College).

Chancellor of St Stephen’s College, Allan Scott received a 2011 Arts and Culture Citation Award for his tremendous impact on visual arts in Edmonton. As Chair of the Board of the Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA), he led a team that raised 90 million dollars. The gallery provides a world-class museum-standard facility for Alberta artists, the Canadian arts industry, and the community. Allan accepted this award in honour of the whole team at AGA and thanked everyone for their support in the project. Congratulations, Allan!

Celebrating our Alumni

A former teacher, Pierrette Requier (MTS, 1998) entered the program “out of frustration and desperation...and a need for change.” She declares that her first course, Feminist Theology, “exploded me back into a thinking life, and helped me discover the role of an embodied, soulful spirituality.” Pierrette’s studies led her to research the possibility of transformation that comes about from the practice of rituals, and the result is her thesis: “Rituals, Consecration, and Healing: An Exploration of Women’s Experiences of Self-Made Rituals as Transformative.” In the years following her graduation, Pierrette developed a private practice initially including pastoral counselling and ritual work, the latter involving organizing and officiating at celebrations based on a psycho-spiritual approach for significant times such as birth and loss. Her multi-faceted career also includes mentoring writers, writing and performing poetry, and a cranio-sacral practice. Pierrette, facilitator of the Wind Eye Writing Seminars, has extensive involvement with the Edmonton poetry and arts community. She recently published, details from the edge of the village, a book of poetry “about the formation of self.” Her poems are included in Storm Chaser: Canadian Prairie Skyscapes by Ian Sheldon, launched in 2011.

Kathleen Johnston (MAPPC, 2003) works in Edmonton as a counselling therapist and career coach specializing in supporting women searching for work that will bring meaning to their soul. She graduated from the Master of Arts in Pastoral Psychology and Counselling (MAPPC) Program and is currently Convener of the Master of Psychotherapy and Spirituality (MPS) Program Committee at St Stephen’s College.

Consider this definition of “career” —A lifestyle concept involving the cycle of work, learning and leisure activities in which a person engages throughout a lifetime. Careers include how individuals create harmony between their paid and unpaid work and their personal life roles.

A Woman’s Career Legacy highlights the stories of eight remarkable Alberta women, each at the height of her professional career. Each woman’s story is a parable for career success as she creates a truly extraordinary life. The book is also a journal, inviting the reader to create a legacy for those she loves.

A companion book A Woman's Career Diary is also available. This book contains 18 topics relevant to today's younger women, along with ample journal pages for personal reflection. Both books are available for purchase from Kathleen’s website: http://www.kathleenjohnston.com.

DEEP IN OUR HEARTS A Poem for Thanksgiving

Deep in our hearts is the longing to give thanks

we did not choose to be upon the earth human life is not an accident

it is a gift from sources beyond our knowing we are thankful for the privilege of being

We are part of the wonder of creation

set amidst the flowers the fields and the forests at home when the sun rises and sets

in all the changing seasons of the years we are thankful for the privilege of living

We are part of the human race

we are involved with others in the struggle there is no assurance of safety or success

yet midst the dangers and delights we are thankful we do not walk alone

Among the multitudes who surround us

with their myriad of personal aims and goals are family members friends and others

who are helpers in our daily round we are thankful for their assistance on the way

We may choose to find life’s treasures with those in high places and in low

who aim to bring a fullness to the world’s deprived the hungry the homeless the broken and rejected we are thankful to be in that compassionate group

Deep in our hearts is the longing to give thanks

for the Life from which we spring the Love which guides our steps

the Light shining on our darkest days we are thankful for the Heart that will never cease

to breathe

Accessibility Project Complete!

It was a decades-long dream, to find a way to bring people whose physical limitations prevented them from using the stairs into the St Stephen’s College building, but there was never enough money to take on such a major project. Finally, after three years of targeted fundraising including the annual Chancellor’s Galas, the dream was realized in the summer of 2011. The first Gala was held on 12 September 2008. Then Chancellor, The Rev Dr Gordon Oaks, and The Friends of St Stephen’s College championed the cause and the support was tremendous. About 300 people from the College, the church and the community celebrated at the Sutton Place Hotel in Edmonton. Subsequent Galas in 2009 and 2010 raised most of the funds necessary to proceed with the renovation to the lower level of the building. Don Wheaton’s major sponsorship of those Galas contributed greatly to their success.

Donations from individual supporters, grants from the Alberta Government’s Community Spirit Program, and grants from The Thrift Shop (St Andrew’s United Church, Spruce Grove) completed the fundraising. Construction by Clark Builders began in December, 2010 with the interior renovations. Outside work started in the spring of 2011. On 9 September 2011, the College community celebrated the grand opening of the renovated College building. A ramp from the west lawn to the lower level west door of the building provides access to classrooms, a new washroom with space to accommodate people in wheelchairs, and two offices. On the west lawn a new patio area was laid out in cobblestones. We could not have accomplished such a major project without our loyal and generous community of supporters. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all of you!

Dr Earle Sharam, Dean and Principal; Rev Dr Gordon Oaks, former Chancellor and founder of The Accessibility Project; and Dr Margaret-Ann Armour, Chair of the Board of Governors, cut the ribbon to officially open the Accessibility Ramp. On the right: Rebecca Freeland-Hebert (BTS, 2011) celebrates with us as she and her daughter wheel down the ramp.

Engaging Men and Boys in Learning and Leadership WITH DAVID HATFIELD

Educators, parents and churches have noticed the disengagement of boys and men from learning and leadership environments and opportunities. This experiential workshop responds with skills that are specifically attuned to male culture. In a fun and respectful environment, we’ll explore male identities, male studies, rites of passage, male-specific conflict transformation skills, fatherlessness, mentorship, males and spirituality, and the roles of both females and males in better engaging boys and men.
