.
Principal‟s Perspective
Welcome back for what we hope will be a wonderful New Year
on the home front and an equally terrific year on the academic front. Just
prior to the holidays I had one of those special moments when Colonel
Brian Newberry (USAF) stopped in with a special gift. Colonel Newberry
is a Stone Bridge parent deployed as a pilot in Afghanistan. Just prior to
returning to his base he presented us with an American flag that was flown
on board his KC-135 Stratotanker on a combat aerial refueling mission
over Afghanistan and the Kyrgyz Republic in support of Operation
Enduring Freedom. The flag will be framed and placed in our trophy case
as a reminder of the brave men and women representing our country in the
armed services and foreign services, many of whom have families
involved in our schools. We appreciate all of their efforts and sacrifices.
The semester exams will be from January 17-20. The schedule is
posted on our website and in this newsletter. Please note the change to the
order of exams from previous years. Our Saturday Exam Review Day will
be January 14 from 9-11 am. This is a good opportunity for students to
come in and get assistance from teachers and student tutors, to have
focused quiet study time for review, and to complete make-up work. We
welcome parents who might be interested in tutoring, particularly in the
areas of math or science. Please contact Karen Normandy at
[email protected] if you may be interested. We thank the PTSO
for providing snacks for our teachers that morning. Note that January 23rd
is a moveable teacher workday (subject to change due to weather). Also,
we have had inquiries about ski trips that will occur over the January 21-23
weekend. These are independent trips that are not under school sanctions.
Report cards will be sent home on February 1. Earlier this year
we mentioned that we hoped to provide parents with the opportunity to
view your students’ grades through a Parent Portal on our new
“CLARITY” grading system at some point during the second semester. It
appears that if this is to happen, most likely it will be during the fourth
quarter. The school system plans to open the portal for parents in all
schools at the beginning of next school year (2012-13). We will keep you
updated as we will need to provide parents with individual passcodes and
some initial training opportunities. Stay tuned to this enhanced
communications benefit.
Immediately at the end of this semester our guidance counselors
will visit classes to begin the scheduling process for next year. Again,
given budget constraints, course selection impacts our ability to offer
certain courses. The flexibility to change classes becomes very limited.
There are no hard copies of the Program of Studies (POS) for students to
take home this year, so our guidance director, Mr. Lucas, is sending out a
link to the POS for you to access (and print) when discussing course
considerations and graduation requirements with your students. If you do
not have computer access then please contact the Guidance Office and we
will help provide you with a hard copy.
Thanks again for all you do to support our school.

The second Virginia Math League contest was
held on November 15. Juniors Sourabh Cheedella,
Jasmine Jellá, Kelly McDaniel, and Haitham
Shahin all scored 5 points. Juniors Sourabh
Cheedella and Jenny Xing are tied for first place with
10 points each. Senior Andy Wong and juniors
Jasmine Jellá and Kelly McDaniel are tied for second
place with 9 points each. The thirty-minute
competition is held in the cafeteria before school.
Students need only a pencil and a calculator to
participate, and all students are encouraged to attend.
Additional contest dates are December 6, January 10,
February 7, and March 6. Further information will
available on the website.
Homework club is underway! Students who
attend can receive assistance in their current subjects,
they can work on gaps from past classes, or they can
prepare for tests such as the SOL or SAT. A
mathematics teacher or advanced studies student will
always be available. The club meets Monday,
Thursday, and Friday mornings in L401 between 8:20
and 8:50. The schedule is posted on the math website.
Be sure your student’s calculator has been
permanently marked with some type of ID. It’s a good
idea to record the serial number as well. If you have
recently purchased a calculator and still have the proof
of purchase, please send it to school with your student.
We collect the POP’s in the math department and use
them to acquire additional equipment from Texas
Instruments.
If your student is enrolled in any Algebra I or
Algebra II class or Geometry, he or she can access the
textbook at home by visiting classzone.com. Links are
provided on the math website. First time admittance
requires an activation code which can be obtained
from your student’s math teacher.
If you have any questions concerning
mathematics at Stone Bridge, please contact Rita
Driskill at [email protected] or 571-252-2200.

Interim Dates: All students will receive interim
reports from each of their teachers, regardless of the
grade the student has earned. Second marking period
interims were sent home on December 14. Interims for
the third quarter will be sent home on February 29.
SAT Registration: The deadline for the January 28th
test is December 30th
. Late registration is January 13th.
Register at www.collegeboard.com or stop by the
Career Center for a paper registration. If you miss
these deadlines and would still like to take this SAT,
check with your guidance counselor about the
possibility of being a “walk-in”. Seniors should check
the application requirements for their desired colleges
to verify if SAT II subject tests are required. Be sure
to register for these tests as well. Check with your
guidance counselor for more information.
ACT Registration: Registration deadline for the
Febuary 11 test is January 13th. Late registration is
January 20th
. Visit www.act.org to register.
SAT/ACT Practice: There are several web sites that
students can utilize for test practice. Some of them are
free while others require a fee. Stone Bridge High
School does not endorse any particular site but
provides them here as a service to our students. Free
sites include www.collegeboard, comwww.act.org,
and www.review.com. For a fee, www.kaptest.com,
www.satmath.com, www.testu.com. “One On One with
the SAT” is a test prep program by the College Board
on the SBHS computer network. Students can access
this program under the “Guidance” section under
“Programs” on the network.
College Applications: Counselors have visited
senior classrooms to discuss the college application
process. All seniors must have a “transcript release
form” on file before transcripts can be sent to
colleges. Applications are processed as they are
submitted to guidance. A minimum of two weeks
must be allowed for processing. For example, if a
college’s due date is February 1st, guidance must have
the required paperwork by January 15th
. If you have
questions, please contact your student’s guidance
counselor. There is a $3.00 fee for each transcript to
be paid at the time of the request. Transcripts for
scholarship applications will be provided free.
MILITARY INFORMATION: Representatives
from the different branches of the military sometimes
visit Stone Bridge High School throughout the year.
They will set up in the Career Center to meet and talk
with students about military careers and educational
choices. Male students 18 years old must register
with the Selective Service. Visit www.sss.gov for
more information.
Procedures for Obtaining Homework Due to
Unexpected Absences: Parents/guardians or
students should call the Guidance Office, (571) 252-
2214, by noon on the second day of the absence to
request homework when the absence is expected to
last more than three school days. This will help
ensure that work will be available by the end of the
third school day. If a student is to return on the third
day, he or she should pick up the missed work
directly from their teachers upon returning to class.
Student Withdrawal Procedures: The parent or
guardian of the withdrawing student MUST notify the
guidance office of the student’s impending departure
and obtain a “Withdrawal/Transfer Form” from the
guidance secretary at least three days in advance of
the planned departure. The parent/guardian is
required to complete and sign the form and return it to
the guidance office. The signed form will be given to
the student during his or her last two days of school.
The student will walk the form through the building
obtaining teacher signatures, withdrawal grades and
returning text books and library books. All books
must be returned to avoid a deficiency. Lockers
MUST be cleaned out and PE locks returned to the
PE teacher. Before leaving on the last day, the
student will bring the completed form to the guidance
office for processing. If you have any questions,
please do not hesitate to call Guidance at 571-252-
2214.

ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP DAY 2012: SBHS
was privileged to provide last year’s seniors with an
Ethics and Leadership Day. This spring, we want to
provide the class of 2012 with the same opportunity.
The purpose of this event is to provide all seniors with
thought provoking topics for which they must decide
the outcome while considering the impact those
decisions have on society. In order to continue this
program, we need to raise the majority of the funds.
Please see the enclosed flyer if you or your company
can help.
SCHOLARSHIPS: Students, especially seniors,
should sign up with www.wiredscholar.com and
www.fastweb.com to begin their search for
scholarships. The Career Center also maintains a list of
scholarships through the Stone Bridge website.
Students should check these weekly. The Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the
government’s form to determine if a student qualifies
for certain grants, federally funded work-study or low
interest loans. ALL families should complete this
form. Many merit scholarships require this form as
well as many Loudoun based scholarships. The
government encourages filing this form on the web. It
is faster and more accurate. This form cannot be
completed until January 1, 2012. The information
required is based on this tax year. To be proactive
however, students and their parent/guardian can
request PIN numbers from the government now. Log
onto www.pin.ed.gov to request your PINs.

Each year, a fun group comes together to plan and execute one of the most talked about events of our child’s high school career: the all-night party held the night of graduation, a.k.a.:
“Project Graduation”
Make no mistake, this is one heck of a party and we need parents from ALL GRADES to help throughout the year as well as the night of the party. Sure it’s hard work and crazy hours, but… the end product is so rewarding!! Feedback from Seniors has consistently described the party as totally awesome and one of the best times they’ve ever had at SBHS! To make the party such a success, the PG Committee meets monthly throughout the year to plan fresh ideas for each graduating class. We are in search of folks to help throughout the year, as well as volunteering for set-up, chaperone, and break-down the actual party day!! We urge you to sign-up to volunteer, or come to a meeting or contact us to learn more about Project Graduation.
Project Grad is an important, well-loved tradition at SBHS and one that we want to be sure continues for all of our students.
Attention Senior Parents – For the first time we will be selling Project Graduation tickets starting in
the fall at a discounted price of $40.00 (compared to $60.00 the day of the party). Order Now!
Thanks for reading!

ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP DAY
Friday, March 16, 2012 at the National Conference Center
The purpose of this event is to provide opportunities for all students in the Stone Bridge senior class to discuss,
make decisions and reach consensus on thought provoking topics and consider the impact those decisions can have
on society.
More than 30 business people and community members help facilitate discussions about the scenarios presented
and encourage interesting discussions with the students about the topic of ethics. Scenario topics may include a
mock trial, hazing, and a “Bad Samaritan” presentation.
