The story behind MyPedia

At Pearson, we created MyPedia to help your school provide effective teaching and learning. Whether you are looking to improve the quality and consistency of teaching throughout your school or to utilise technology more effectively, MyPedia provides the integrated resources and professional development you need.

MyPedia aims to transform learning for the 21st century. Interdisciplinary learning teaches students to think bigger by making connections across subject boundaries. MyPedia's 5i instructional model helps students explore novel questions and examples, apply their developing knowledge and skills, and receive feedback on their learning. Children will grow to become more engaged, independent students and problem-solvers, supported by teachers whose effectiveness improves and confidence develops, increasing and enhancing the impact on learning.

In 2017–2018 we undertook an efficacy study to see whether the use of MyPedia India is related to the delivery of student outcomes, such as positive attitudes to learning and improved test scores. The study confirmed that use of MyPedia does relate to student achievement, and teachers thought that it also enhances student engagement.

Through this Educator’s Guide, we will share with you the stories behind the MyPedia India efficacy study and how educators use and implement the whole school structure of MyPedia to make a measurable difference to their teaching and learning, resulting in more effective teaching and improvements to the students’ learning achievements.

The educators and students featured in this Guide come from a range of schools across India. They are all using MyPedia as a holistic tool for teaching and learning.

Engaging studentsOur efficacy study found that, of the 165 teachers asked in 2018, 90% of them agreed that MyPedia India contributes to students’ positive attitude toward learning.1 The engaging content in MyPedia, delivered through visually appealing print and digital resources, really captures students’ imaginations and holds their attention.

When sharing their stories about using MyPedia, several teachers told us how they had seen a big improvement in the level of engagement now that they were using MyPedia India. They described their students as “passive” before MyPedia, but now they all join in, asking questions and working collaboratively. These observations are consistent with the goals of the 5i model, which includes many active learning opportunities.

Adding interest for students and teachersInterdisciplinary teaching aids comprehension and allows students to apply knowledge to a range of contexts. It can also add texture and interest to subjects, helping to capture students’ attention and keep them engaged. Maryam Khalid, a Grade 7 teacher from Al-Burooj School who uses MyPedia India, describes how her students engaged with material in her English lesson to explore a multitude of different subjects:

“ We really enjoyed the learning layer on Mystical Japan in English. It was largely a travelogue, but from the interdisciplinary perspective, students were asked to mark places on a map of Japan. Students were so interested in the idea of relating it to Social Studies that together they recreated the mystical island of Japan in the classroom. They researched the culture, language, geographical features, dressing and food of Miyajima Island in Japan and recreated it beautifully. All the students, teachers and management enjoyed the experience of ‘visiting Japan’ thoroughly. The questions asked in the middle and end of the learning layer encouraged us to think outside the box and study the chapter from various perspectives. We can say that MyPedia has enabled us to broaden our horizons.”

Developing learners’ problem solving and critical thinking skillsOne of the intended learner outcomes of MyPedia is to develop students’ higher-order thinking skills. Our efficacy research has not yet measured the impact MyPedia has on this development. However, when sharing their stories about using MyPedia, teachers frequently tell us that the approach to teaching and learning supported by MyPedia does help students develop their questioning skills. The integrated and interdisciplinary learning design of MyPedia India supports students’ development of higher-order thinking skills. As a result, teachers report that their students ask more engaged questions and understand the material more fully than before they were using MyPedia India.

Integrated resources for more effective teaching and scaffolded learningMyPedia integrates resources in a variety of forms, print and digital, empowering learners to access material through different media and in a range of places. The resources are also scaffolded, providing activities that can support students of different abilities. One of the most important parts of in-class teaching is the ability to differentiate activities for individual students and give one-to-one attention. With the planning and resources taken care of by MyPedia India, teachers found they had the time and thinking space to do this, meaning that more students can benefit from their teacher’s direct attention.

Teachers know that MyPedia provides all the materials that they need, and that the resources are integrated with the curriculum content and structured so that there are different ways students can learn about a single concept. It takes care of the resource planning and differentiation for teachers, whilst providing a suitable learning design for each student.

Confident teachers make successful studentsMyPedia supports teachers to be more effective in the classroom and our teachers have told us how much more confident they feel in the classroom as a result of using MyPedia. Our efficacy study revealed that MyPedia teacher confidence ratings increased each quarter between 2017 and 2018. 18% of teachers were rated “very confident” in quarters 1 and 2 of 2017, whereas 27% were “very confident” in quarter 2 of 2018, which constitutes an increase of 50%.2

Teachers improving student achievement

Confidence is said to be contagious. Principals, coordinators and students have all told us about the improvement in their teachers' confidence and the difference it makes in their classrooms.

“ Since using MyPedia, I see healthy competition amongst the teachers to deliver lessons in innovative ways, and that in turn encourages the students to be more inquisitive. Teachers follow the lesson plans in depth and are ready with the resources in advance. Teachers are key to successful learning. As well as feeling more confident in their work, observations of teachers found that they became increasingly more likely over the course of a year to have a greater impact on student achievement. Test results show that when teachers are observed to have a greater likely impact on student achievement, this is associated with actual higher student achievement.3 Teachers have also seen a change in student behaviour.

MyPedia’s quality is trusted by teachers and parents alike. When asked how they would rate the overall quality of MyPedia India as a solution for their school, 95% of teachers and 93% of parents rated MyPedia India as either Good, Very Good or Excellent.3

Consistency in qualityThe design of MyPedia allows a whole school to have a consistent approach in their teaching solution, training teachers in the delivery and supporting learning throughout the entire curriculum; it enables the delivery of more effective teaching at a whole school level. The integrated multidisciplinary design also encourages teachers to work together, to support each other, all adding to a school’s ability to provide high quality education.

MyPedia Philosophy

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change-Stephen Hawking

What will the world look like after 20 years? What kind of jobs will exist; will they be the same as today? What kind of skills will be required? How much will a college degree matter v/s skill?

The ability to “think” will be the most important skill. MyPedia is built on the philosophy that subjects and concepts we teach are a way to build thinking skills. Hence, the focus in MyPedia is how something is taught. For the purpose of measurement and tracking – we use the Bloom’s framework for cognitive learning. MyPedia aspires to take learners from “remembering” and “understanding” to “application” and then to “higher order thinking skills”.

MyPedia philosophy does not undermine the value of memorization during learning, it is an important area to build. Ancient practices included mind training to increase the “working memory” of monks – who had to remember numerous verses and literature. Daniel Goleman, the guru of Emotional Intelligence, in his book “Focus” talks of the importance of building working memory and how experts in any field are capable of storing high amount of information chunks, e.g. a doctor being able to do real time diagnosis based on all the information stored in his mind on the human body, symptoms, etc.

Professional and supported training across your schoolIn order to achieve consistently high quality teaching, we provide professional development resources for MyPedia teachers. Teachers are key to providing effective teaching, so MyPedia aims not only to include high quality resources, but also train teachers in how to implement those resources effectively. Our efficacy study found that higher observed MyPedia teaching quality and expected teacher impact ratings are associated with better student test scores. That is, teachers who implemented MyPedia more successfully tended to have students who performed better in tests. MyPedia includes professional development resources for teachers so they can continually improve their teaching ability and their confidence.

Supported professional development for teachers is an important part of MyPedia. Some of the courses are available digitally for teachers. MyPedia also uses face to face training with product and teaching specialists, to ensure that the teachers can successfully deliver the material and educate their students.

Where next for MyPedia India?We continually look for ways to improve MyPedia and better support our teachers and learners. Recently we have been refining the Home App, which caters for home learning. It aims to give students access to their learning in a range of different environments and also engage parents in their children’s education. We have also developed Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality (AR and VR) resources to bring new learning experiences to MyPedia students.

The Home App: continued learning at homeMyPedia caters for home learning. For students, this helps to extend the learning time outside the formal classroom and also supports improved engagement of parents in their children’s learning. MyPedia teachers love that they are able to facilitate home learning and set assignments using the student app:

The app provides all the support students need, meaning parents can be confident that their children can learn independently at home. Where next in the teaching and learning journey for the schools using MyPedia India?It is clear that not only are the students in MyPedia India schools engaged with their learning and achieving improved results, but the teachers and staff are benefitting from the support the programme offers. The teachers and students believe that MyPedia India makes the entire educational environment more effective, successful and enjoyable, and they want to keep using it.

What’s next: Gemford International School, KeralaUsing MyPedia, Gemford International School takes a holistic approach to the success of their students, helping students to become more effective learners, as well as developing teachers to be more effective. Radhika Jayesh Nair, the school’s Principal, has seen how this generation of students, parents and teachers wants to engage directly with real-time results in order to target individual learning, and since first working with MyPedia in 2018, she has seen how it equips students with this. Part of the school’s ambition is to develop students who can engage with their community and the environment, which Ms. Nair believes MyPedia can also facilitate further in the future.

“ Generation Z is result-oriented. We know from our experience that MyPedia encourages students to be independent learners and provides multiple opportunities for the students to 'Check-in' to their progress, to receive feedback from teachers and peers. This is empowering for students. I am keen for more real-world problems to solve perhaps even through student seminars. Children benefit from tackling challenges that are in their immediate environment and experience. This is something I feel MyPedia can surely lead the way.”

What’s next: Fountainhead, The Global School, HyderabadThe staff members at Fountainhead, The Global School take pride in constantly upgrading their skills as educators. They have been using MyPedia India for two years and Meghana Musunuri, Founder and Chairperson of the school, believes that MyPedia will play a key part in the learning and development of both students and staff over the years to come. In particular, features like the Home App help to fulfil the school’s mission to treat learning as a collaborative partnership between the school, the home and the community; she is looking forward to seeing her students use more of the Home App and learn more about current affairs and the world around them so that they grow as productive members of their community.

“ MyPedia has Design Thinking at its core and that allows us to evolve and be relevant to the future. This generation is capable of learning through apps and the MyPedia Home App offers a great opportunity for after school learning. Currently, the Home App offers the course materials and accompanying short assessments, and I am looking forward to students engaging more with the content on it, such as current affairs, innovation and discoveries, environmental and social initiatives and creative writing assignments. Ultimately, we want our students to engage with their world through informed and responsible action and MyPedia helps us to do that.”
