The canon of scripture begins with the Old Testament. What do we mean by the word canon?

Apostolic authority – must have been written by or contain the teachings of an apostle

Antiquity – must have been written during the generation of apostles (no later than 92/3 AD)

Orthodoxy – must adhere to the faith taught by the apostles

Catholicity – must be acknowledged as Scripture by a greater part of the Church
