MARCH 2017

THE STUDENT WORLD

The High School Road Shows are an excellent way to meet students and

build relationships with careers advisers in the very best schools across the

UK, by way of overseas study fairs and presentations. These schools include

public, private, grammar and state funded schools in targeted regions of the

UK, that we feel have the best profile for overseas study.

Developing a presence in UK schools is fundamental to a successful

awareness raising and student recruitment campaign. In the build up to the

Road Shows, our dedicated UK School Liaison and Operations Manager,

Anna Birbeck, visits the schools to prepare students for the event, often

giving an assembly talk to students in years 11, 12 and 13.

Each Road Show lasts 3.5 days and the group of universities typically visits

up to 12 schools, with access to more by collaborative hosting, where parents

and students from schools in the local area are also encouraged to attend.

The number of universities from each country is limited to 6 per Road Show,

to ensure our events maintain a truly global feel and aren’t dominated by any

one country.

We take care of the planning, organisation and management of all aspects of

the Road Shows to ensure your visit is a comfortable one!

Founded in 1865, Malvern College is a leading UK private co-educational boarding school,

catering to ages 13 to 18 (8th to 12th Grades, Years 9 to 13 in the UK system). It has

Approximately 675 students, 350 in the Sixth Form. Malvern College was one of the first in

the UK to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme in parallel to the

traditional A-Level courses; Currently, the IB/A Level division in Year 12 is approximately

50:50.

Although a traditional British boarding school, the student body is highly international, with

British students mixing with over 30 nationalities, including German, Belgian, Chinese,

Nigerian, American, Italian and Russian. 80% of the student body boards in eleven boarding

houses; day students also belong to these houses.

Results: A Level 2016 A2 results: 36% A*-A grades and a 96% pass rate ; IB 2016 results:

Mean 36.6 from 85 students. 25 scored over 40 points.

Preparation for US universities: The vast majority of Malvern College students intending to

apply to US universities come to the school for the Sixth Form from outside the UK and have

typically had little or no application preparation prior to joining the college. The majority of

students applying to US universities are non-native English speakers. The College has

recently introduced a small team to act as ‘School Counselors’ to provide advice and

guidance on the US application process. As is typical in the UK, all these counselors,

including the Head of University Applications, are full-time teachers and also have other

responsibilities within the school.

SAT Results: The following represents average data for the 24 students who took the new

SAT in May and June 2016 - SAT Reasoning Average: 1336 (range 1180-1510)

Stanford, UCLA, NYU, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Wake Forest, RISD and Barnard. Other

popular international destinations are McGill (Canada), IE (Madrid), Bocconi (Milan),

cultivate pride and excellence in every aspect of life. It takes its name from the quintessentially

English village in which it resides.

Abbots Bromley believes it is important for its students to develop the moral integrity to

Stafford Grammar was founded in 1982 following a decision to establish a selective,

independent school to provide a liberal education with the ethos and quality of a grammar

school, in response to the merger of the town's grammar schools.

The purpose of Stafford Grammar’s Sixth Form is to equip students with the necessary skills

to enable them to make informed and educated choices in their life. Reaching their potential

in academic studies gives students greater flexibility in their choice of higher education and

employment, however, Stafford Grammar believes that academic success alone is not

enough and that students must also continue to develop their personal skills and show they

have widened their experiences and responsibilities. Stafford Grammar therefore encourages

active involvement in school life as it believes that leadership and teamwork skills should be

nurtured and development.

The Sixth Form has established a formidable academic reputation as a centre of excellence.

It’s students are supported to become independent learners and are provided with guidance

and advice to manage their own time effectively

Stafford Grammar is the highest achieving co educational school in the area. In 2016 75% of

A Level results were A*-B grades and 50% were A*-A grades, consistent with previous years,

The expertise of academic staff provides the best possible support for students with their HE

or career aims. The extensive tutor programme is tailored to the needs of the students and

Stafford Grammar aims to develop self-confidence and encourage all students to actively

participate in the life of the whole school and the local community. As well as some useful

Wolverhampton Girls High School is one of the best state schools in the country, regularly

achieving exam results which place it at the top of the league tables. It recently converted

to academy status which means it manages its own budget, rather than being controlled by

the local authority (essentially ‘grant maintained’).

Competition for entry is fierce as over 1000 girls apply each year, and of these 1000, only

145 places are granted. Entrance is determined purely from entrance examination results -

the school does operate an appeals and waiting list system, but the chance is very slim.

Entry after this point is very limited and does not fully open again until sixth form. Sixth

form admission is then granted on the basis of a variety of factors such as GCSE predictions

and results, as well as performance in an interview.

Although this school is not a fee-paying school, it mirrors the structure, operating a ‘house’

system whereby students are assigned to a house on arrival and will be with that house for

the duration of their stay, competing against other houses in competitions (sporting and

non-sporting) throughout each school year.

Wolverhampton Girls High was previously awarded the status of Language College in the

UK's Specialist Schools Programme and recent A-level results placed the school in fifth

place in the performance league table for all grant maintained schools in the West Midlands.

This school is also among the top schools for university admissions and has an increasing

number of students wanting to study further afield, with particular interest in Canada.

One of the highest achieving schools in the country Shrewsbury High School (SHS) was

recently ranked first place in Shropshire in the Independent School Councils league table.

However, though SHS has always prided itself on its success in A levels, it values broader

education and enrichment with equal importance.

Special recognition/subject areas: The Sixth Form provision at SHS has just been

recognised with a nomination at this year's ‘Times Independent School of the Year

Awards’. It has been nominated for the award on the basis of the quality and breadth of

the school’s provision for Sixth Formers. The SHS Sixth Form ‘Tripos’ which provides girls

with a wide-ranging combination of A levels, Extended Project Qualifications, Diplomas

in Languages for Business, Arts awards and more, received the honour in the Times

Education Supplement. The School also received a second nomination recognising its

Ellesmere College takes pride in the fact that it's focus is on the achievements of each and

every student according to his or her abilities, not just in the achievements of the brightest

and the best. Ellesmere is famously forward looking and innovative - you'll never catch this

school clinging to tradition for its own sake or resting on its laurels.

The Sixth Form at Ellesmere is hugely successful and offers full time courses for over 200

students. Ellesmere College provides teaching and learning of the highest quality and prides

itself on the high performance of successive generations of students who have ensured that

the College is noted both nationally and internationally for its achievements. This

international reputation means the college is popular with international students, some

attend for summer school and others become full time boarders.

Recent A Level results saw 60% of all grades being A*/B grades. IB results were also

excellent with 75% of students achieving more than 30 points, which is equivalent of A*AA

grades at A Level.

The range of degree courses that Ellesmere students choose to pursue is a reflection of the

many interests and opportunities they experience at the College from Economics to

Engineering to Fine Art. Candidates have been successful in receiving offers from a wide

range of Russell Group universities, but some choose to study further afield. The College has

a consistent track record of students who chose to study abroad. Recent destinations have

Harrogate Ladies College belongs to a family of UK Independent schools, established in the

1890s. Today it retains a strong sense of history but with a forward thinking, progressive and

modern outlook.

The college has a vibrant Sixth Form community of around 140 girls both day and boarding.

Life in Sixth Form is a little bit different from the rest of College; Academically, students are

encouraged to work, think and study more independently and there are opportunities for

greater responsibility and leadership within the wider school community. Sixth Form

students have the benefit of a dedicated Sixth Form Centre which is designed to offer a little

more freedom and to support a more independent way of life.

Harrogate Ladies’ College is a largely non-selective school, although its excellent public

examination results might suggest otherwise. Studying at Harrogate Ladies’ College typically

adds one grade to estimated exam results in every subject – a factor which is considered by

many to be the best indication of a school’s success. 2016 was no exception in consistency of

excellent exam results; The number of A* grades more than doubled, a third of students

achieved a clean sweep of 3 or more A*-A grades and 66% of all grades were A*-B, with

students achieving 100% A*-B grades in a total of 10 different subjects.

The range of university courses that Harrogate Ladies College students go on to study is

incredibly diverse and reflects the wide range of A level subjects that offered. University

Destinations and courses for 2016 included International Studies in Prague, Architecture in

Hong Kong and the Netherlands, Economics in the USA and Melbourne and Engineering

Science in Germany.

QES has a tradition of scholarship and care dating back over 400 years, with its present

popularity founded upon a broad and imaginative curriculum geared to individuals, excellent

results, impressive standards of care, and a reputation for a friendly, relaxed, yet purposeful

atmosphere.

QES was previously a private boarding school but that gave up its independent status after

the local education authority agreed with their counterparts in neighbouring counties that

QES should provide the grammar school needs for the whole area. Since this time, QES has

continued to be a well-respected and high achieving coeducational school at the forefront of

evolving educational practices and was the first secondary school in the county to convert to

Academy status, which means it is directly funded by the Department for Education and

independent of local authority control, providing more freedom and autonomy.

At its last inspection by OFSETD (quality governing board in the UK), QES maintained it’s

‘outstanding’ rating, making it the most sought after school in the area. Among the top 25%

of schools in England, the recent A Level pass rate was 98%.

QES has a large 6th form with over 350 students. The fact that the Sixth Form Leadership

Team consists of Head Boy, Head Girl, Deputies and Assistants who are trusted to prepare

and present presentations, attend and participate in governor’s meetings, and help shape the

school for future years, is testament to the type of education offered.

QES has an excellent track record of enabling students to gain offers for the top universities

in a diverse range of highly competitive courses, abroad as well as in the UK and is a school

well known to a number of International universities, in particular in the USA and

Netherlands.

LRGS is one of the UK’s top grammar schools for boys and a successful state boarding

school, rated as 'outstanding' across all categories by Ofsted. There are 1000 students at the

school, including 200 boarders and a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. LRGS challenges

the brightest boys in the North West of England, along with boarders from further afield, to

fulfil their potential.

The values central to LRGS are those of academic and extra-curricular excellence and

opportunity, within a diverse and tolerant community, forming the best possible foundation

for future life.

LRGS is justifiably proud of its sporting tradition. The school’s reputation for producing

competitive teams and individuals across a range of abilities is second to none and they are

rightly proud of the steady stream of Old Lancastrians who continue to garner success at

national and international level.

LRGS is consistently placed among the top state schools in the country and is one of the

leading state boarding schools in the UK. The high standard of achievement of its students

and the inspirational teaching by its staff means that LRGS’s A-level results are exceptionally

high. Three-quarters of A- level results are regularly A* - B grade and the vast majority of

leavers go on to their first choice university, many of them to the most competitive

institutions. Some venture further afield and a few students each year are offered places with

International universities.
