DESCRIPTION

This painting represents the sound waves found in the studio I was working in. I began by marking up a birds eye view of the room and it’s structural elements including, doorways, windows, lighting fixtures, plumbing and pillars/columns. I then began to map the concentration of noise in the areas most walked through by the students in the painting studio, and where the concentration of sound was most prominent. By playing loud music within the space and drawing the beats and vibrations of felt through my body I was able to fill as much of the canvases space as possible. It was important to me that the viewers eye constantly move throughout the picture – like a sound wave that never stops. By using complimentary colours I hope to create a physical sensation rather than an analytical understanding of the painting. A feeling of overwhelming sound that is hard to ignore or restful. Sound or noise is everywhere; we just chose to not hear it anymore.
