Geomorphologic Processes
• Erosional– earing down of the earth’s surface by wind, water,
and/or ice
• Depositional– laying down of material that has been eroded by
wind, water, and/or ice
![Page 6: The Study of Earth’s Landforms. Where Do You Live? =](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062503/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979a6a/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Geomorphological Processes
• Fluvial geomorphological processes are related to rivers and streams.
• Mass Movement occurs when soil and rock moves down a slope under the force of gravity.
• Glacial movement causes both erosion and deposition.
• Weathering involves the chemical breakdown of rock (like limestone) and the mechanical wearing down caused by ice, wind, water, or plant root breaking apart rocks.

Weathering
Release of Pressure Erosion removes materials from the surface causing the rock to crack or flake off like the layers of an onion.
Animal Actions

Chemical WeatheringChemical weathering occurs when a chemical reaction takes place causing the rock to change.

WeatheringAbrasion occurs when the wind pick up small particles and blows them into rock, cutting and shaping them.

So what does this have to do with space?
• Comparative Planetary Geomorphology investigates common features of Earth, Mars, and the Moon
• As HD imaging become available of other planetary surfaces, geomorphology can be compared
• Scientists can make comparisons and come to conclusions about possible past planetary features using this method
![Page 31: The Study of Earth’s Landforms. Where Do You Live? =](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062503/5a4d1ae87f8b9ab059979a6a/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Your Mission
• Using the planetary surface photos provided, determine possible geomorphological processes
• Identify the geomorphological process and construct a persuasive argument supporting your groups position
• If this process was in fact responsible for the formation, what feature(s) would the planet have possessed at one time?
