College Graduates Weather the Storm
Despite the troubles of the Great Recession, college graduates still fared better than their less-educated competitors in the job market.
This Summer’s 1.7 New College Grads Have More
Reason for Optimism
If the recovery holds…
There will be another 19.4 million jobs for those with four-year college degrees over the next 10 years.
10 .7 million of these new openings will be for college graduates.
Some Preemptive Strategies
1. Find your institution’s career counseling or career services office and seek career building skills.
2. Share with your network that you’re looking for work.
3. Rely on previous internship connections.
4. Compile a list of competencies you have that are relevant to a particular job (see www.onetonline.org).
Some Preemptive Strategies (Continued)
5. Do an adequate cost-benefit analysis if you plan on attending graduate school (See these publications: Hard Times 2013: College Majors, Unemployment; and Earnings and What’s It Worth?: The Economic Value of College Majors).
6. Pay attention to industry winners and losers (For more industry specific information, see Recovery: Jobs Growth and Education Requirements Through 2020 and for information on certificates see Certificates: Gateway to Gainful Employment and College Degrees).
7. Recognize that learning is a life-long process and strive to demonstrate continued learning.
