Mary Quinn and her husband Graeme Bilenduke of Breckenridge are dedicated supporters of The Summit Foundation. They have chosen to involve their children, Emily and Jack, through volunteering. The Bilenduke family first became involved with The Summit Foundation through the annual Great Rubber Duck Race, helping sell ducks before the race and wrangling ducks in the river. They have since volunteered at the Hockey Classic, Mountain Art Gathering, and Annual Golf Tournament.

Graeme feels that Jack and Emily have been positively impacted by volunteering with The Foundation. He feels that the kids have been exposed to the importance of giving back to the community while having fun doing it. They all agree that their help with The Foundation makes them feel more involved and connected to Summit County and really grateful for what they have and the community that they live in.

Volunteer ProfileThe Bilenduke Family

The family has some great memories through their volunteer time, and fondly looks back on “duck sorting” the day after the race. Both Emily and Mary look at volunteering with The Summit Foundation as a way to spend time with friends while giving back to the community.

Jack, a sophomore at Summit High School, encourages other teenagers to volunteer with The Summit Foundation because “it helps the community and makes you feel good inside, and the work is pretty chill.”

Emily, who is starting her freshman year at University of Redlands, admires The Summit Foundation for their support system to the community. She advises families just to get involved, even if they can only offer a little.

“Volunteering can bring families closer together and allow you to feel like you are making a difference,” said Emily. And in true form of one gets back what one gives, Emily was recently awarded a scholarship from The Summit Foundation to help pursue her college goals.

When thinking about why they decided to volunteer with The Foundation, Mary summed it up best: “It wasn’t so much a decision, as an invitation to a fun party! The more we learned about The Foundation, the more sense it made to help out.”

The Summit Foundation hosted its annual Grand Lodge on Peak 7 Golf Tournament June 9 – 10 at Breckenridge Golf Club. This popular tournament sold out in early May, with 140 golfers vying to win the first place position.

Saturday evening began with a welcome party dinner and Calcutta auction hosted by Hudson Auto Source. Van Gogh Vodka and Dillon Dam Brewery provided spirits to enjoy the evening, while Michael Klepper of NRC Broadcasting was the lively emcee of the auction. Peak 1 Express provided transportation services after the party. Breckenridge Mayor John Warner hosted a breakfast on Sunday morning prior to the 10 a.m. shotgun start.

After a very windy day of tournament play, the team of Rob Millisor, Scott Mitchell, Nick Doran, and Jake Himmelman won with a score of 58. Players enjoyed a delicious on course BBQ provided by John Daisy of Fatty’s Pizzeria and the Breckenridge Restaurant Association and wonderful chair massages by A Spa Ahhfair. At the Interval International awards reception, the top five teams were honored with prizes; along with individual prizes for the longest drive, most accurate drive, and longest putt.

The annual tournament raised $55,000 for The Summit Foundation’s grants and scholarship program. The Foundation is thankful to all the players for their continued support of this long-standing tournament. Thank you as well as to title sponsor Grand Lodge on Peak 7 and to the Town of Breckenridge and the Breckenridge Golf Club, who were generous hosts.

Successful Peaks Society workshop with Author David Fry70 Community Members in Attendance

On July 13, The Peaks Society of The Summit Foundation hosted a presentation and workshop on succession planning for family vacation homes. Seventy donors, community members and professional advisors were in attendance to hear Author David Fry’s recommendation to create entity ownership in a Limited Liability Company (LLC) to pass a vacation home to the next generation and beyond.

The Summit Foundation received favorable feedback from attendees, including the following comments provided through the evaluation forms:

• Very informative• Great presentation• Great speaker • Great info• Great topic• Great seminar• We thoroughly enjoyed the seminar and took lots of notes to follow-up with our “plan”. Thank you for arranging it!

The Summit Foundation looks forward to hosting more workshops and presentations for our donors, professional advisors, and their clients. To suggest future topics for consideration, please call The Summit Foundation at 970.453.5970 or email [email protected].

Leaving a LegacyAs we’ve mentioned before, planned giving can be highly involved, utilizing complex estate plans and trusts. But having a thoughtful giving plan and leaving an impactful, lasting legacy isn’t just for the “wealthy” and needn’t be complex. Gifts of all sizes make a difference. You might consider making a gift that will keep on giving beyond your own life. This can be as simple as naming your favorite charity as a beneficiary of your will, IRA or insurance policy. As always, we recommend you consult with your financial advisor, lawyer, or accountant.

Based out of Breckenridge, Team Breckenridge Sport Club (TBK) is an Alpine, Freeride, and Mogul team for athletes of all ages and abilities. Our programs begin at age 6 and continue through age 25. It is our mission to provide our community with an athletic environment that allows each athlete to reach their potential and pursue their life’s goals through snow sports.

Since 1988, TBK has helped to produce 60 members of the US Ski Team, US Olympic Team, US World Champion Team, US National Junior and Senior Champions, Junior Olympians, and NCAA All Americans.

The 2012 – 2013 season kicked off with summer camps in Mt. Hood, Oregon for both the Alpine and Mogul teams. The athletes are excited for the upcoming season, and hoping for a great snow year! Full-time conditioning started in August at the Breckenridge Recreation Center, as athletes continue to develop power and strength to dominate in their winter sport along with producing life-long skills.

In a restructure of TBK, Team Breckenridge Sports Club is pleased to announce that Chelsea Lynch has taken the Director position. Chelsea graduated from Summit High School as a ski racer for Team Breckenridge. She continued her ski racing career in the east skiing for the University of Vermont, and graduated with a degree in Exercise Science. Chelsea has gained a worldview while she worked for the US Olympic Committee as the Assistant Coach and Manager for the US Paralympic National Ski Team. Most recently, Chelsea was the Head Women’s Coach for the Chilean National Ski Team. We are excited in moving forward with a new structure to promote sport and the core values Team Breckenridge Sport Club offers to all athletes.

Our single largest and most reliable benefactor has been The Summit Foundation. We recognize that there are dozens of worthy nonprofit organizations here in the County, many or most facing the same challenges we do. We are honored to be among those The Foundation has deemed worthy of its support. The help Team Breckenridge Sports Club has received from The Summit Foundation over the years has directly trickled down to our member families, enabling many of them to continue to pursue their passions and goals. Of equal significance is the fact Team Breckenridge Sports Club has been able to grow, creating critical mass of our own, which “snowballs” the momentum The Foundation granted us. Thanks to all, who over the years have donated their own time, energy, and financial resources to make The Summit Foundation what it is. TBK looks forward to working with our world class staff, athletes, community, and Breckenridge Ski Resort to continue developing the morals, experiences, and athletes that our club represents.

While on a high school winter break from Denver, Carre met her now husband John Warner on the slopes of Breckenridge. After a big day of skiing, they had their first date — seeing a movie together — in Breckenridge. It was December of 1968. The movie theatre was in the Quonset hut on Main Street, and the movie starred Bob Hope and Elke Sommer.

While both were still attending college, Carre at the University of Denver and John at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Carre Lindeman became Carre Warner four short years later in Denver.

After they both completed college and John finished dental school, the Warners moved from Denver to Breckenridge on Halloween of 1980 to begin their new lives. Each subsequently opened a business; John’s was

dentistry in 1981 and Carre’s was Interiors by Design with business partner Cindy Gray in 1984.

During the 1980’s, the community was vibrant with new interests. Several nonprofit organizations, including The Summit Foundation, Breckenridge Music Institute, Breckenridge Festival of Film, and Summit Huts Association all began with Carre and John serving as early volunteers and board members.

Next came their two wonderful daughters, Brittany in 1986 and Katey in 1989. Having a young family resulted in Carre’s immediate focus on balancing family and career. Local child care was at a critical shortage, with long waiting lists. At that time, Summit County, Colorado had the largest percentage of working mothers in the entire country. Carre jumped into the fray at the Carriage House as a volunteer and President of the Board at a time when the organization was fundraising for a new building. After a successful campaign, the current location of Carriage House opened in 1994.

Carre began her first term on the Board of Trustees for The Summit Foundation in 1996, a position she held for eight years. Due to her familiarity with local nonprofit organizations, Carre focused on grant distributions during that tenure. Newly elected in 2011 for a second stint on the Board, Carre is now focused on the Development Committee. This is her way of experiencing the nonprofit world from the other side of the coin.

Carre is glad to call Summit County home. Her life with family and friends is full of reward and enjoyment. She is honored to be a part of the “Soul of the Summit”, The Summit Foundation.

Please welcome Buhler to The Summit Foundation’s Board of TrusteesIn June, The Summit Foundation elected John Buhler to serve a two-year term on the Board of Trustees. John has been the General Manager at Keystone Resort for the past two years and has an extensive background in the ski industry, having previously served as Ski and Ride School Manager, Assistant Director, and Director of Skier Services for Breckenridge Ski Resort

from 1994 – 2006. In addition to this position with The Summit Foundation, Buhler serves on the Board of Directors of the Professional Ski Instructors of America – Rocky Mountain Region.

A Massachusetts native, Wanda was born into a military family. The family moved every three years which instilled a love of travel in her. Upon graduating from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Wanda moved to New York City where she lived and worked for eight years. In 1988, friends told her of their plans to go to Colorado and work a season at a ski resort. Her love of travel kicked in — making the decision to join the group simple. They landed in Breckenridge and Wanda began working at the Breckenridge Ski Resort (BSR) in their daycare facility with additional jobs to include restaurant and retail work. As luck would have it, she met Chuck Creen while taking a ski lesson and they’ve been together ever since.

In 1990, Wanda began working in the Breckenridge Ski Resort Administration Department. When Ralston Resorts, owner of Keystone Resort, bought BSR she was offered a position in the Legal Department at Keystone. In 1995, her daughter Sierra was born and in an effort to keep the family on one side of the county, Wanda applied for her first position with The Summit Foundation which she held for two years in 1996 and

1997. The position reinforced a love of volunteerism which began during her public school years as a Girl Scout and continued throughout her years in New York and in Breckenridge as a volunteer for Backstage Theatre and Breckenridge Festival of Film. Their sons Thomas and Brennan were born in 2000 which has kept Wanda very busy and encourages further volunteerism as a parent volunteer in the school system and within the various sports programs Sierra, Thomas, and Brennan are fortunate to participate in.

Before coming to The Summit Foundation for her current position as Administrative Assistant and Office Manager, Wanda was employed at the Town of Breckenridge.

She and her family live in Blue River and enjoy taking trips together, camping, and spending time on a river fishing or just enjoying the scenery. Theatre continues to be a love and she participates when time allows. Wanda is very excited to once again be working for The Summit Foundation and looks forward to contributing to all the great work the organization does for Summit County and surrounding communities.

The Summit Foundation Re-Welcomes Wanda Creen to the Staff

Former Office Manager Cheri Ryan and her husband John welcomed a daughter on May 1, 2011. Cheri has since accepted a full-time position with All Seasons Catering, which enables her to work from home while caring for baby Isla. We wish Cheri the best in her career and with her family!
