The songs that all men should be qualified on for the annual show are now listed in two places and two different formats on Groupanizer

1) on the main music page the songs are listed by 1st half song orderfor example 1-1 Show Me Where the Good Times Are indicates that SMWTGTA is the first song of the first half of the show 2-1 Patriotic Medley indicates that Patriotic Medley is the first song of the second half

2) on the calendar page for June 29th the show song order is listed there

We want all of our men on the risers for the show (and so do our patrons that pay our bills) so get qualified

Active Heralds place orders for the gift cards with the Scrip Coordinator Larry Clapp The ldquocommissionrdquo the Heralds make on the sale ranging from 15 to 25 is split with the member placing the order and deposited in his HoH account for use on barbershop related expenses

Ambitious projecton April 1st an army of volunteer callers began contacting every Society member by telephone Members are being asked to give their opinion about the level of satisfaction with their own per-sonal barbershop experience and to recommend things that need to be added changed improved or deleted to improve the barbershop experience Each member will also be given the opportunity to send a message directly to the CEo andor society president Every member is invited to enlist as a soldier in the BHS volunteer army to help with projects for the society and his district Additionally the call-ing team will be gathering information to compile a data base of skills and talents possessed by our members The data base and comments will be used by society leaders to plan create and lay the foundations of a better future for our society We hope you will be prepared to relate your mem-bership experience help develop the skills data base and share your vision for the future when one of our 23k project volunteers calls you if someone calls and you are not at home please help our call-ing team by returning the call Dare to be part of making dreams come true

kent is one of the finest men irsquove known Always there to greet you with a smile and a kind word if there was ever a time he wasnrsquot smiling it was because he was singing (and smiling wide on the inside) He sure did love his barbershop Almost as much as he loved Claudine

He had an uncanny knack of getting away with calling me ldquoTootsierdquo He heard my mom do it so often he probably had a difficult time remembering my real name ) kent and Clau-dine have become extended family over the years i am espe-cially honored to have been able to call him friend i sure will miss him and the way he could turn just about any comment made over a game of Mexican Train in to a song )

A service in Celebration of kentrsquos life was held Thursday May 16th at St Andrewrsquos United Methodist Church in Bran-don Many Heralds membersndashactive and inactivendashfriends and family gathered for the service

Some fond memories and tears were shared About 50 men came forward to sing When I Lift Up My Head Shenandoah and Irish Blessing between prayers scripture reading and a special message presented by Brad Grabill By request of kentrsquos son Worth Jenkins the closing prayer was led by Tony De Rosa a beautiful rendition of Keep The Whole World Singing

kent L Jenkins 65 of Brandon florida and formerly of Roa-noke and Richmond virginia passed away on Tuesday May 14 2013 He was predeceased by his parents Raymond L and Elizabeth Jenkins and his broth-er Ray (Liz) He is survived by his wife Claudine Wills Jenkins sons Worth (Shelbie) Curtis Conner (Susan) daughters Lin-da and fianceacutee Joe Hoehn Wen-dy Cummings (Scott) He is sur-vived by five granddaughters three grandsons and his sister Sarah Jenkins He is a member of St Andrewrsquos United Meth-odist Church and was a long time member of several bar-bershop choruses and quartets in virginia and florida He was employed in industrial Sales since the age of 19 His memorial and Celebration of Life was held on Thursday May 16 2013 at St Andrewrsquos United Methodist Church at 6 pm Also a graveside service will be held at Mountain view Cemetery in vinton virginia on Mon-day May 20 2013 at 10 am flowers are appreciated but the family has requested that donations be made to Moffitt Cancer Center Tampa florida

flashback last yearrsquos Quartet Champions sang friday night kicking off the convention while Special Arrangement (S) Main Street (D) and B4 itrsquos 2L8 (SD) competed in the Senior and District contests

Some of our Heralds have dual membership and sang with the Jacksonville Big o Chorus They placed 2nd next to HD Chorus who took the trophy for 2013 The risers looked sharp with the riser drapes Judy Williams made for the Heralds on loan convention weekend

Main Street and B4 itrsquos 2L8 qualified to sing again on Saturday evening

The class meets at 6 pm for 50 minutes on rehearsal days in the big blue room it was going to be Mondays only since many canrsquot attend on Wednesdays but the majority attending the first session agreed that fitting in a few more classes was important The time schedule allows you a chance to get ready for rehearsal which begins promptly at 7 pm

Classes began May 6th and will continue through June 24th you will need only to show up you will need pencils and some paper if you want to take notes All other materials will be provided

As some of you know and the rest of you are about to learn irsquom a great listener NoT a singer Some of the phraseology used during rehearsal doesnrsquot mean much to me so i figured sitting in on the music class would be a good thing Maybe learn a little Well color me surprised i learned a LoT

if you arenrsquot a musical wizard you should attend this class (And letrsquos be honest there arenrsquot many wiz-ards among us Tony of course is a wizard ) He doesnrsquot need this class)

Tom has put together a very infor-mative package and presents it in a non-threatening way encouraging questions all the way through

By the way i learned what that little 8 under the treble clef is and that a treble clef is also called a G Clef Bonus info

Great rehearsal for openers we worked on our opener (SMWTGTA) and our face Donrsquot leave home without it (your face) Gotta Smile and Resonate Also worked on GRiTS Gotta Lift and Resonate Smiling may be optional but your face is not Always work on dialog with director and audience Top three parts need to be more assertive particularly during and after key changes and ramping up to tag Choreo improving nicely on SUTB The wedgework and homework are beginning to pay off Make sure you watch the rehearsal videos or we lose our edge

a Spring training and Kihon Every rehearsal is Spring Training Every rehearsal we work on our fundamentals or kihon (key-hone) kihon is a term used in the martial arts meaning the basics the fundamentals the foundation of the skill-set our kihon in barbershop is proper breathing posture resonance lift and space moving warm air forward never compressed mental focus our face our dialog or audience communication unity of sound vowel targets intensity and energy level

a Your Face Have you noticed that when you smile you lift When you lift your eyebrows and your forehead you are also lifting your top molars and your soft palate and creating that inner smile that produces that resonating sound we all crave This takes some practice in front of a mirror Start by doing eyebrow push-ups then engage the jaw the cheeks and expose some teeth Donrsquot leave home without it (your face)

a it was a LovELY rehearsal Lots of energy lots of wedgework and lots of evidence that we have been looking at the rehearsal videos at home

a Everything is Everything The choreo and music is a total package and will eventually become inseparable Learning the choreo will permit us to begin to work the full performance Have to own the choreo first Getting better

Less and less disparity in the sound with the choreo but it is still there once we can do the choreo without thinking about it then we can refocus on what we are doing vocally Almost hard not doing the choreo Sans choreo was a useful exercise to get the sound going first and to remind us what it is suppose to sound like when the choreo is added once we master the choreo and we are no longer thinking about it then all the elements will start working together and Everything becomes Everything

a Basic Singing 101 Fog up the mirror Before you sing a song you need to prepare to sing Create the space first once you have created the space for warm air then you are ready to inhale for singing Try inhaling and exhaling in front of a mirror to get the feel of where the roof of your mouth should be to get that uplifted space for warm air The resonant space has to be created first then inhale through that space for a deep breath prior to singing This is also referred to as ldquoThe beginning yawnrdquo Creating the space first then taking a breath is another way of saying ldquoTaking a lifted breathrdquo Remember Get space in place before you get tone and warm air behind it And donrsquot forget to Smile before you sing

a Moving Forward Working Forward The goal of every rehearsal is to improve in some way Everything that is said or done at rehearsal is presented with the idea that it will improve our personal or group performance There is something that will happen at each rehearsal that will make you a better singer Something will speak to you regardless of your level of proficiency Something is bound to happen that you will be able to put into play immediately There is something here for everyone that will keep you coming back each week to accelerate your growth as a performer

a Choreo for Armed Forces Medley Ralph Brown did a lovely job teaching us new moves for AfM Just enough moves to make the song more entertaining and bring it to life Check out the rehearsal video to help reinforce those moves Thanks also to Ralph for helping us in Early Bird Choreo This kind of dedicated effort will contribute to our continued improvement

a Breathing and choreo Check the correct breath spots Go back and check your music for correct breathing Concentrating on the choreo may have temporarily caused you to breathe in the wrong place Check and double check to get your breathing back in the right place

a Speaking of choreo We are in the performance business and our songs need to be exciting and entertaining our performances should be engaging to the audience and get them involved in our music The Heralds of Harmony is a show chorus in addition to being a dedicated choral ensemble We need showmanship This is not just an auditory experience this is a visual experience complete with engaging facial expressions lots of smiling and complementary hand and body moves that help to communicate the songrsquos story and create a dialog with the audience Moving also helps you sing better by releasing energy and unlocking the body to free up your voice producing more ring to the sound

a Qualifications for the show The Music Team has set June 17 as the deadline to qualify on the following six songs Show Me Where The Good Times Are Slow Boat To China irsquoll Be Seeing you foggy Day Armed forces Medley and Strike Up The Band you will be expected to know and sing the other show songs very good (qualification worthy sans recording) with continued practice and added review but for this show the qualification process will apply only to the above six songs Top three parts need to check lyric on GRiTS Sectionals on GRiTS next rehearsal Wed May 15

a We were reminded tonight that we need to riSK BiG We were reminded tonight that we may have a tendency to sit back and be careful as we deliver our vocal production We were reminded tonight that we canrsquot do that We have to RiSk BiG we have to be aggressive while we are delivering

our vocal production When we get on stage we totally want to have a good time and we will perform our rehearsal etiquette needs to match that same enthusiasm so Go BiG now and be aggressive but with the right technique

a Butter Knife gives more clarity Delivery needs to be inspiring memorable artistically pleasing vocal production needs to be aggressive and musical not aggressive and heavy Be as aggressive as you want to be just no sharp instruments in your hand No hatchets no chopping the cucumber Use a butter knife smooth out the delivery with less muscle When we sing in a heavy manner with a lot of muscle we sound angry and edgy When we sing both aggressive and heavy we lose the clarity in the sound Without the muscle we get ring and clarity in the sound

Worked on God Bless America Taps Show Me Where the Good Times AreNew choreo for the end of Strike Up the Band Check the rehearsal video Ralph will have the written plan on the website Sectional rehearsals on God Bless America Grits and Taps Tenors have agreed that it is a good idea to all sing the same arrangement

a Uniform plan has been put on hold Will be implemented at some future date after thorough review Repeat No new uniforms for the June 29 show Credit card info will be shredded

a When you establish your personal breathing plan donrsquot release word too soon donrsquot close the word off donrsquot cut off early Breathing effects tempo sync and timing Need to breath in tempo
