Summer 2019
News from Kate H. Bosnich, Executive Director As noted in the spring Tapestry Program Guide, I was fortunate, along with four of my staff, to attend the 2019
National Afterschool Association Convention which was recently held in New York City. This annual convention
brings together afterschool professionals from across the country to connect and share ideas in order to serve all
youth. The theme for the convention was - Rise Up with Passion, Purpose and Persistence.
Many of the seminars/workshops provided ideas to assist the children to build success, reframe conflicts and gain
new skills in the afterschool setting. Afterschool programs contribute to boosting academic performance, promote
physical activity and offer enrichment opportunities while providing the children a safe and nurturing
environment. The professionals who work with youth in diverse school and community based settings, provide a
wide variety of learning opportunities, as well as nurture and care for them.
You can’t help but return home inspired to bring some of the exciting and fun ideas that you learned at the
convention and share them with fellow staff and the children. One inspiring event at the conference was the guest
speaker, Melody Herzfeld from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. She spoke about
the violent school attack which took place and how students, staff, parents and the community came together to
get through this tragic event. The Tapestry Program has strong ties with our families, our school districts and our
community for which we are very grateful. Speaking of community support, the Tapestry Annual Community
Fair was held on May 1st and was attended by many of our community partners. Thank you to these wonderful
agencies for their support and making us Tapestry Strong/Community Strong. Have a great summer!

THE TAPESTRY PROGRAM
Students at Proctor Elementary School Tapestry are getting ready for summer weather. We have been busy playing wiffle
ball, basketball and taking advantage of all things outdoors. Students have also been participating in group games that
encourage cooperation and teamwork. When the weather doesn’t want to cooperate, we have other means of passing the
time. The students at PrES Tapestry have been hard at work making all sorts of arts and crafts for the spring and summer
seasons. This includes tissue flower bouquet creations, egg painting day, duct tape wallets and rose making with play doe,
which was taught by one of our very own students! PrES Tapestry is very excited to welcome summer to our program. We
have a theme of “Experiences & Exploration” with each week having a specific theme. Some of the weekly themes include:
Camping Week, Space Camp Week, Under the Sea Week and Lego Week. We are looking forward to having a wonderful
summer! If you would like more information about the Proctor Summer Tapestry Program please call 779-7351.
NORTHEAST PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our theme for Summer Tapestry 2019 is based on the show Survivor. We will be playing games, having competitions,
solving puzzles in groups as well as individually. The children will learn to cooperate with each other, identify skills in
themselves and recognize strengths in others. Who will be able to claim that they “Survived Summer Tapestry at
Northeast?”
As usual, we will visit some Vermont State Parks. We will swim, play in the sand, take a hike and enjoy a boat ride one of
the weeks. We have had some amazing sand castle competitions in summers past and I look forward to what this group of
campers will create.
Tapestry will again offer tutoring services to students who need a little extra support. Using a theme based approach, our
teachers will work with small groups to improve or maintain math and reading skills.
Of course, the most important lessons learned this summer will be those revolving around fun and friendship—how to make
new friends, play fairly with others and work as a team. Here’s to an amazing summer! If you would like more information
about the Northeast Summer Tapestry Program please call 779-7405.

RUTLAND TOWN SCHOOL
Summer is finally here! It certainly seemed like a long time coming this year. We are very excited to have most of our past summer staff
returning for another summer of fun in the sun. The theme of this summer will be “Exploring the Arts”. The staff are very excited about
this theme and the different possibilities for creative and educational activities. We will be exploring all the various art forms such as
painting sculpture, theater, literature, music/poetry and film. We have a lot of terrific activities and projects planned. If anyone has a
specific art form that they are good at we would love to have your talents with us. It will be fun to explore our creative sides.
On Wednesday, July 17th, Tapestry Programs from GRCSU will have an all day fun day at Echo Lake. We have a rain date of Wednesday,
July 24th in case we had a day like last year with torrential rains. There will be swimming, games and other fun things to do with our
friends from our school district. It will be a fun day.
This summer our schedule will be similar to other years. We will have theme related activities in the morning and swimming at Northwood
Pool in the afternoons every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday will be our all day field trip day. Some of the field trips planned
this summer will be Great Escape Water Park, movie day at Flagship Cinema, Bennington Art Museum and fun days at our beautiful
Vermont State Parks and lakes. Thursday are days spent doing a variety of activities at school. This will be a great day to have artists from
around the area come in and do demonstrations for us.
It is going to be a fantastic summer. If you would like your child to join in the fun this summer please call 779-6102. Hope to see you all
there as we Explore the Arts!

Northwest Tapestry is looking forward to the summer. This
spring we went to Head Over Heels, did some swimming at VAC
and spent lots of time outside. Our Friday clubs have been a huge
success and we will be finishing out the year with a soccer club, a
Zumba club, a science club and an arcade club. We also had a
successful Family Night at the end of May.
As the weather gets warmer, we are starting to get excited about
summer. This summer, Northwest Tapestry will be learning all
about Native Americans. Groups will be spending time reading,
writing and doing art activities to learn about the Native
Americans who inhabited the United States. There will be
cooking, science, math games and bike safety. Tuesday and
Thursday afternoons will be spent swimming at Pittsford
Recreation as well as spending one whole day each week at a
lake. Kids will have the opportunity to swim, hike, build in the
sand, go out in boats and enjoy all that the state parks have to
offer.
This summer we will have a special visit from Steve Rider a Spirit
Guide from the Mi’Kmaq tribe. He will be sharing information
with students, playing music and singing Native songs.
Northwest Tapestry will spend the summer keeping cool with slip
and slide, sprinklers, and lots of outdoor play. Hikes to Giorgetti
and field trips to the Montshire Museum and Magic Forest will
keep kids actively engaged during the whole six week program.
Anyone interested in having their child join the fun should call
779-7581. Hope we see you there!

NORTHWEST PRIMARY SCHOOL
This summer, West Rutland is exploring “The Elements!” We are looking at expanding our knowledge of Earth, Wind, Fire & Water.
Our six week summer camp will be filled with various activities including literacy & math support, enrichment, fun and games. There
will be enrichment opportunities every week that will allow the students to move throughout the building and participate in different
activities inside and out.
As in the past, our students will have the opportunity to travel outside of the building on various field trips. Field trips will allow our
students some new experiences. As always, we will also be visiting several of the Vermont State Parks, allowing the campers the
chance to swim, play in the sand, visit with Naturalists and explore the great outdoors. New this summer every child will be completing
a Vermont State Parks Venture Vermont Challenge scoresheet giving them the opportunity to earn free state park entry. We will be
reconnecting with the Rutland Recreation Department to use White’s Pool for swimming activities. We will be partnering with Head
Over Heels for a nerf war. Finally, we will be going to the Great Escape Indoor Water Park.
This summer, we will have three groups that vary in age and mix the students in grades 1-6. Also, as in the past our school will serve
breakfast and lunch which is available to all students/children in West Rutland at camp and throughout the building. Breakfast will be
served 8:00-8:30 Monday-Friday and lunch will be available from 11:30-12:00.
