La Mesa Historical Society and

La Mesa Rotary partner on downtown

Historic Photo Plaque Program

Eleven new plaques recognizing La Mesa history now hang on buildings in the city’s downtown. The plaques are

part of a partnership between the La Mesa Historical Society and Rotary Club of La Mesa. They join another

plaque that has been up in the village since 2011.

Each plaque features a historical photo with a brief interpretive text designed to educate the public on the unique

history of the downtown village.

The new plaques are at the former site of the La Mesa Movie Theater at 8119 La Mesa Blvd.; the former La Mesa

Lemon Company building at 8241 La Mesa Blvd.; the former Bank of La Mesa/Park-Grable Company site at

8202 La Mesa Blvd.; the former Hotel La Mesa building at 8282 La Mesa Blvd.; the former Heller Building at

8295 La Mesa Blvd.; the former Bank of Southern California at 8302 La Mesa Blvd.; the old San Diego Gas &

Electric building at 8329 La Mesa Blvd.; the former Drew Ford building at 8390 La Mesa Blvd.; the old

Sheldon’s Gas Station at 8401 La Mesa Blvd.; the former First National Bank/Piggly Wiggly building at 4757

Palm Ave.; and the former La Mesa Lumber/ Chamber Building at 8200 Allison Ave.

The historical photo plaque program started in 2011 with the installation of a plaque at the Wolf Building at 8360

La Mesa Blvd., to commemorate the centennial of the Flying A Motion Picture company’s residence there from

1911-12. The Flying A studio produced more than 150 silent films during its time in La Mesa, many of them shot

in East County. The plaques cost nearly $15,000 altogether, according to Historical Society President Jim

Newland. Newland will lead a tour of the plaque sites at 10 a.m. today at 8241 La Mesa Blvd.

The plaques feature historical images from the Historical Society’s collections. The images are laser-etched onto

stainless steel panels, providing crisp reproductions of the photos.

“We want to help educate people about the heritage of our unique downtown,” Newland said. “Most people see

downtown La Mesa as an iconic asset. We want to show the evolution from small rural business district to what it

is now — a regional retail center. Up until Grossmont Center came on the scene in 1961, it was the main retail

center for anyone living in Lemon Grove, Spring Valley and La Mesa.”

The groups say that they hope the plaques complement the city’s recently completed Downtown Village

Streetscape Improvement Project.
