– A Unique journey of Grade 8-A with Maths

Project-based learning has always shown to increase student engagement, offer interdisciplinary learning opportunities and give students opportunities to practice collaboration and critical-thinking skills that are in high demand in the modern workplace. In a subject like Math, its scope is simply limitless.

To start off, the group leaders were chosen by the teacher, Ms Radhika and they in turn selected their team members. In no time we were six teams on board ready to accept the challenges placed in front of them. To the learners, it all looked like a Herculean task in the beginning but the teacher thoroughly believed that they were more than prepared for what was coming their way.

Once they started working on the project they experienced the pleasure of operating in teams. On the day of their project presentation, each of them came to realise how the entire process had deepened their conceptual knowledge, moulded them into confident individuals and cultivated in them the 21st century skills such as problem-solving, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

LEARNING WITH A DIFFERENCE

CALCULUS HEROESTeam Members: Rishika Neetu (Team Leader), Adwaid Pai, Aaron J Shibu, Anna Treasa, Gauri Jain, Naina S Gopinath

Topic: Ratio and Percentages.

Our team was assigned four tasks. Two tasks were to be presented in class and the other two were to be submitted as paper work.

Task-1: To create a doll version of one of our team mates by taking real measurements of ourselves and scaling them backwards.

Task-2: To understand the importance of percentages in real life, we were assigned another task of making a soap cake using the ingredients in correct ratio.

We were expected to present this on a 2D surface but we decided to take it up a notch and created a 3D image of the same using an app called Adobe Fuse.

Task-3: To create a design or a pattern on 10 x 10 graph paper using the principles of percentage, colouring 10%, 20%, 30% and so on using different colours, forming a beautiful design.

Task-4: Our final task explored our culinary skills. We were to create a puzzle based on the ratio of ingredients used in a chosen recipe. Without a second thought, we chose a cheeseburger recipe and created a few engaging questions about the same.

We learnt a lot more than just math concepts through this project. We improved on our technology skills, learnt about different softwares and different editing apps. It also taught us how to work in a group and to respect each other’s opinions. Overall, it has been a very enlightening experience for each one of us and we are looking forward to many more.

JR ENTREPRENEURSTeam Members: Jeffrey T Gerard (Team Leader), Anushka Alexander, Sonal T Benny, Pranayaa Ram, Abel J Abraham

Topic: PROFIT AND LOSS

Task-1: To find the current interest rates of five different banks so as to analyse and choose the most appropriate one where an individual would invest his money.

Task-2: To design a business model about the production of 31 pairs of spectacles that could be used by our fellow mates to overcome the stress caused to their eyes by the online classes. We were expected to do the adequate calculations and project the estimated price of each pair of spectacles, profit included. We started our presentation with a real-life

situation involving interest rates and business models. The entire presentation was based on an imaginary central character named Dave who was to start a business of his own by manufacturing spectacles with the money he had saved over time. As a team, we worked on various PPTs and videos. We also added an element of value education to our project through a colorful skit.

TEAM DATATeam Members: Kripa Sunil (Team Leader), Niya M Peter, Matthew Shaju, Tilak J Nair, Akshata S Menon

Topic: DATA HANDLING

Task 1: To conduct a survey on Multiple Intelligence within our own classmates, collect relevant data and analyse the same to find each one’s dominant intelligences and to suggest them with an applicable career path.

Task 2: Make a table showing how do you spend 24 hours in a day and represent this data in a circle graph.

Task-3: Collect every day’s maximum and minimum temperature of your location from the newspaper and prepare a table showing a week’s record and draw a double bar graph on the above data.

Task-4: Demonstrate the concept of probability using beads

Being a part of this Math project has been a memorable experience in this virtual era of learning. We believe that this trial of self-learning has helped us immensely and we eagerly look forward to many more.

MATH PIRATESTeam Members: Sandra B Mohan (Team Leader), Kaashvi Chandak, Pranav Gupta, Prachi Gupta, Zaahid Hamdan

Topic: PLAYING WITH NUMBERS

In this project we were assigned tasks connected to divisibility rules, magic squares and multiplication and division tricks.

Task-1: Make a video to demonstrate how to make a magic square. Create an online Magic Square Quiz.

Task-2: Form a divisibility disc that displays various 5 digit numbers that are divisible by three.

Task-3: Using various mathematical operations make a 1000 using the digit 8 exactly 8 times.

Task-4: Complete the magic square if the magic sum is 274.

During this one month each one of us learned quite a bit, especially that time flies. I guess all of us always knew that as a saying but we only learnt its real meaning when we actually experienced it. We also learned a set of new multiplication and division tricks, ways to solve a magic square and how to create beautiful presentations. Each of my team members and I believe that it was a wholesome experience.

THE X SQUARED FACTORTeam Members: Kevin Jose (Team Leader), Veer H Kuruwa, Namitha J Shah, Ishaan Sumith, Esha Joji

Topic: UNDERSTANDING QUADRILATERALS

Task 1: Design a Plan for a Quadrilateral City. As the name suggests, we were expected to use only quadrilaterals to build the entire city planning, designing and building a Quadrilateral City.

Task-2: Create a 3D model of your Quadrilateral City

Task-3: Arrange different types of quadrilaterals made out of different colours to form the

flag of India.

Task-4: Draw a quadrilateral on a coloured paper and then extend the sides to form exterior angles. Repeat the same for a pentagon and a hexagon. Now verify that the sum of the exterior angles of each of the above mentioned polygon is 360 degrees by paper cutting method.

We functioned as a team smoothly, delegated duties according to one’s talent and helped each other in the process. Collaborative working style was clearly demonstrated in our group meetings where one of us displayed the 3D model of the city made out of cardboard as the other created it on the computer using specific software.

Like all other groups, we had our share of solid learning too. We learnt how to design the plan of a city using the Krita application and to create the 3D model of an entire city using Sketchup application. Last but not the least; we gained perspectives as we made new friends.

NET BANKERSTeam Members: Jonah S George (Team Leader), Padmanabh K, Rihan Tariq, Diya Neil, Aditya Mohan

TOPIC: VISUALIZING SOLID SHAPES

Task-1: Create 3D models of any 5 cartoon characters (of different shapes) and demonstrate how to determine the net of these 3D models.

Task-2: Create a music video about the different views of 3D shapes.

Task-3: Draw a map from the railway station to your home using a proper scale and symbols for different landmarks. Use the map you have drawn to help your aunt to navigate to your place. Write the instructions you will give your aunt to reach your place.

Task-4: Draw three different nets for a cube and a square pyramid.

We were to create cartoon characters out of 3D shapes and explain the net formed when each of them were opened up. We were also asked to touch upon the concept of map making and map reading. But what delighted us the most was that we were to accomplish a task which demanded us to make a music video about the concept of 3D shapes.

As a group we split the duties evenly, keeping in mind the strengths of each team member. In different ways, each of us played the role of a leader. I took notes and drew up a timeline taking into consideration the final presentation date. Our group worked very well together. Each person expressed their ideas and none of them were met with negativity. To be honest; it was a pleasure being a part of this group project.

“What is your first reaction on seeing an insect?” asked Dr Meenakshi Venkataraman to Grade 7 and 8 students who had gathered to know about a less known subject – ‘Why insects matter?’

Dr. Meenakshi Venkataraman is a trained ecologist and entomologist.. She is Assistant Governor, Ooty Region for the year 2020-21. She is also a committee member of Ooty Literary Festival and the Nilgiris Library. She was the Secretary for Nilgiri Natural History Society. She is passionate about insects and is working on her second field guide to Indian insects.

The session threw light on various species of Insects, flies and bugs; their role in the ecosystem; what makes them successful survivor in the timeline of evolution; their role as a climate change indicator; difference between flies, bugs and butterfly and so on. She encouraged children to observe and learn from the surroundings about various insects and not to squish them at the very sight. She concluded by sharing a website name – inaturalist.org wherein students can learn more about insects they see in their surroundings.

WHY INSECTS MATTER?

INTERACTION WITH MR SUJAY KUMAR (RESEARCH PHYSICAL SCIENTIST AT NASA)

Mr Sujay Kumar who works at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, was our special guest with whom students of Grade 7 and 8 interacted and held an interview to understand some of the on-going projects he is part of. Students posed various questions on his journey to reach NASA, the subjects which he learnt during school and college and so on.

Mr Sujay’s area of work includes Conduct research on Earth science remote sensing measurement and modelling to understand their impact on land-atmosphere interactions and relationships with human activities through the analysis of data from space, in-situ and airborne instruments. Serve as the technical lead for transitioning the award-winning Land Information System (LIS; http://lis.gsfc.nasa.gov) for research and applications. The targeted use of LIS span socially relevant applications such as water resources and agricultural management, drought and flood monitoring, famine early warning and prediction and weather and climate prediction.

The focus of the session was Earth science and its various applications. He explained it through images from satellite and other graphical representation. The video recording of interview was later viewed by all students of Grades 7 and 8 during the class teacher’s time. Students found it very interesting and thrilling.

MRS SHOBHA VISHWANATH - A SOCIAL ENTREPRENEUR

Mrs Shobha Vishwanath is a social entrepreneur who saw a problem and decided to step in and fix it. In the process she created something beautiful, Weavers Village. Her talk was very educational and motivational. She told us about how she decided to start this organization and how the idea of Bhoomika came about. Bhoomika is a doll created from unwanted material and it is symbolic of the suffering of people all over Kerala during the floods. The idea behind Bhoomika was to rebuild a sustainable Kerala after the 2018 floods. During the floods Mrs Shobha Vishwanath was part of the ‘Anbodu Trivandrum’ initiative. Later, as rehabilitation began her organization also started building homes for the flood victims as part of Bhoomika. Thus she explained the difference between entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship.

After that she told us about the struggles when the pandemic hit. They were struggling as their profits had gone down by a lot. That’s when she had the idea of natural, ayurvedic masks. Mrs Shobha also showed us the masks and few other products and explained to us the difference between chemical and natural dyeing of clothes. Another main focus of Weavers Village is woman empowerment especially in rural areas. They bring new meaning to a woman’s life by teaching them how to make their products.

The talk was very enlightening but my favourite part was the fact that Weavers Village helps a lot of women around Kerala earn a living and help support their family. Another thing that I liked was that each product was unique and put the spotlight on handlooms. Mrs Shobha Vishwanath made the talk way more fun and engaging and even showed us the weavers working on the handloom. This was an inspiring reminder of our dear Gandhiji's ideology on sustainable development on his 151st birth anniversary. - By Aimee Mariam Thampy 8C

Mr Benoy Joseph from the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell, Kochi City Police took a session for Grade 5-8 parents, as a part of the on-going Cyber safety awareness drive. Mr Benoy stressed on the need for parents to be part of all the internet activities of children especially Games played by their children. Banning and too much of controlling would only invite more trouble as children usually find a way out and can end up in proxy websites and its dangers. He spoke about a website called ESRB.org (Entertainment Software Rating Board) and pegi.info wherein parents can choose age appropriate and safe games or even check whether the games being played have safe

content. A list of terms which are common among the net users with wrong intentions was also shared. He also informed us about an exclusive website developed by the Kochi City Police called Kidglove.in which provides guidance on being safe while using the internet.

MALAYALAM CLUB ACTIVITY

“Forgiveness is the quality of the brave, not of cowardly. The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong”, said Mahatma Gandhi.

On October 2 every year, Indians around the world commemorate the birth of the Father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi, remembering his teachings and values, which he contributed to the society, to understand the sacrifices he made for the freedom of our country by arranging different struggle movements. As part of Gandhi

Jayanthi celebration, students were engaged in a variety of programmes which went beyond the screen, into the homes and hearts.

The class captains presented informative ppts about Gandhi ji’s life, the importance of Charkha in Indian history, took a virtual tour of the Sabarmati Ashram, Sang his favourite song - Vaiṣṇava jana tō tēnē kahiyē jē pīḍa parāyī jāṇē rē, observed Sevana vaaram, learnt to make a sketch of Bapuji, make a model of charkha and so on.

GANDHI JAYANTHI

The theme for the The Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations for Grade VI, which lasted an entire week, was ‘Charity Begins at Home’. Students stayed true to the slogan ‘one must take responsibility to clean one’s own room’ and also helped their parents clean their houses during the COVID lockdown.

Students and teachers together drew caricatures of Bappuji. They conducted a virtual trip to Gandhiji’s sabarmati ashram, while keeping Gandhiji’s values close to heart.

They brought memories of Gandhiji to life by making charkhas using cardboard and popsicle sticks. The students discussed ways in which they could help their parents at home. They shared thoughts and values on equality and helping one another and took them to heart.

Grade 8 students brought further depth and meaning to the day as some of them jotted their thoughts about the day and how they feel connected to the ideologies of Gandhi ji. The students put on their thinking hats and took part in a Quiz based on Gandhi ji’s life, which was prepared by the class captains. Some of the artists brought to class, the sketch of Gandhi ji made by them for the occasion.

Each moment of happiness gained during these celebrations held online keeps assuring us that the hearts joined by love can never lose hope of being together.

Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.

“Safety starts with Awareness; Awareness starts from you”

Keeping in view the ever increased use of the internet by Students, teachers and parents, Middle school planned a Cyber safety awareness drive from the month of September, with a variety of programmes to create awareness among all internet users especially students.

The drive included sharing common informative videos followed by discussion with the class teacher; students reading comic strips shared by class teachers and expressing their views about the safety issue.

Awareness sessions for Grade 5-8 parents were also held by police personnel from the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell, Kochi City Police. Mr Benoy Joseph stressed on the need for parents to be part of all the internet activities especially Games played by their children. The cyberspace safety drive is an on-going programme and sessions for students will be held in the coming days.

GRADE 6: Different types of plants shown to study the types of roots and stems and their modifications.

GRADE 7: SIMPLE PENDULUM PAINTING

Art Oriented Activity A pendulum is a fixed object hung from a point so it can swing freely back and forth due to the force of gravity. It was discovered by Galileo Galilei. As the swing moves back and forth it is demonstrating the physics of a pendulum. The swing is moving back and forth due to the force of gravity on the swing in an elliptical shape. Initially the pendulum covers larger area due to high amplitude of oscillation and gradually it confined in to the elliptical pattern, as the amplitude decreases, hence forms a specific artwork.

WARLI ART - MATH ART INTEGRATED WORK

This art is 2 dimensional, with no perspective or proportion. Warli painting is simple and linear with the maximum use of triangular shapes. concept having the upward facing triangle representing the Male and the downward facing triangle representing the Woman. It also represents fertility as the tribal belief revolves around the cycle of Birth and Death.

LEARNING BEYOND BOOKS

THE TASTE OF NATURE: Shri Ponkunmam Varkey’s ‘Aa Vazhavettu’ is a story that focuses on shedding light on the difficult lives of a farmer. The farmer is forced to cut and remove his banana trees, one that has provided him with warmth, shelter and comfort; one that he considers as part of his own family. The story, which was written many years ago, lives on timelessly and is still able to highlight the hardships that a farmer faces even in today’s world. The banana leaf flowers made by the students in the Malayalam class were notable in connection with the lesson. Like the house of Marcos Chettan from the story, each house now has the fulfilling aroma of the banana leaves.

The children shared the dishes they made out of bananas in the online classes with their teacher and classmates, spreading the aroma of Marcos chettan's banana in the whole class.

GRADE 6: ENGLISH WALKING IN MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI’S FOOTSTEPSThe masterpiece of High Renaissance Art is ‘the fruit of squinting brain and eye’ as described by Michelangelo himself in the poem, On the Painting of the Sistine Chapel. The sixth graders of the Middle School followed Michelangelo’s footsteps for no creation can be comprehended without walking in the creator’s footsteps, albeit within the confines of the four walls of their own homes via visual tours and actually painting in postures that had them ‘squinting’ their ‘brain and eye’. If the ceiling of the Sistine chapel provided the canvas for Michelangelo, our sixth graders’ canvas was more humble – the underside of a chair or table! These images are a testament not to their talent but unbridled enthusiasm.

Mental health awareness program was conducted in all grades of Middle School (5-8) in the month of September ( 9/9/2020 -1/10/2020) as an initiative to provide psychosocial support to students for their mental health and well being during the covid outbreak and beyond, following the guidelines by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resources Development)..

The aim is to help students to become resilient and face challenges and live their life productively and happily by having a better understanding and outlook towards their mental health .

Interactive sessions were conducted class wise, with all students of Middle School, and introduced the following concepts and addressed their queries.

1.Introduction to mental health.

2.Relationship between mental health and physical health.

3.Identifying & understanding emotions.

4.How to preserve mental health?

5.Who all can help you ?

Follow up sessions are also being planned as a continuation to this in the coming months in middle school.

Shreya S Sareen and Tuvya Agarwal from Class VII E have been selected by The Coding School's Qubit by Qubit's Introduction to Quantum Computing with IBM Quantum. This is an international course with instructors who are researchers from MIT and Oxford for 5,000 school students worldwide who were selected based on the Statement of Intrest submitted online.

Quantum computers perform calculations based on the probability of an object's state before it is measured - instead of just 1s or 0s - which means they have the potential to process exponentially more data compared to classical computers.

Classical computers carry out logical operations using the definite position of a physical state. These are usually binary, meaning its operations are based on one of two positions. A single state - such as on or off. up or down, 1 or 0 - is called a bit.

In quantum computing, operations instead use the quantum state of an object to produce what's known as a Qubit. These states are the undefined properties of anobject before they've been detected, such as the spin of an electron or the polarisation of a photon.

We wish both the students all the very best for their new endeavour.

AI has become one of the most in-demand technologies of this era. Efforts are being made to upskill not only the professionals but students and early-age learners also in the Artificial Intelligence skills. Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), India has secured a Guinness World Record for offering online training to most users in 24 hours. India's education board secured the record with the help of leading tech firm Intel. The achievement was unlocked during a virtual lesson on 'The Impact of AI and Key Considerations Around its Usage', which was attended by over 13000 students. The e-learning lesson is part of CBSE's ongoing 'AI for Youth' virtual symposium. 22 students and 3 teachers from Middle school attended the online training and received participation certificates.

Career choice is the most important event in an individual's life. A person's success and consequently, satisfaction and happiness depends on how accurately he chooses his career. Improper selection of the career or frequently changing the career is very harmful to psychological health.

The session on CAREER GUIDANCE by Mr. Charles Aurelien, our own faculty of French was held on 9th Sep 2020. This was an excellent and informative session for the students.

The key aspects of career planning was shared during this sessions, such as:

• What is career and the difference between career and job

• The purpose of career planning, need to have career goals and the role of values

• How to go about in building the best career path and choose the career path of your interest

• What are do's and don'ts while choosing a career etc.

This helped us to understand the important of choosing a career and to have a clear idea about how to make us prepated to enter the vast area of opportunities before us. This session was extremely interactive and students were encouraged to ask questions. Mr. Charles cleared all the doubts with patience and enthusiasm.
