Our Bishop has wri#en a very good le#er to our North Alabama Annual Conference with a

    great Scripture reference.

    Dear Friends,

One of my favorite passages of Scripture is found in Philippians 3:13b-14. “But this

one thing I do: forge%ng what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press

on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Though applicable each and every day, these verses from Paul’s wri.ngs are

especially apropos as an old year ends and a new one begins. This is because celebra.ng a

new year par.cularly lends itself to le%ng go of the past and leaning into the present and

    future.

One of the most meaningful ways I have found to do this is by spending the days

between Christmas and the New Year reflec.ng on the past and se%ng goals for the future.

The reflec.on .me consists of thanking God for the blessings, asking God’s forgiveness for

my missteps and iden.fying learnings I gained through the course of the past year. The goal

-se%ng focuses me on the possibili.es of the coming year.

As 2020 draws to a close, I feel as extra pull toward this annual habit. Deep in my

spirit I sense the importance of “mining” what God has to teach me from the experience of

this difficult, heart-rending, challenging and humbling year! This also equips me to release

2020 and enter 2021 with hope and gra.tude.

Ques.ons bubbling up in me include:

If I had the opportunity for a re-do of 2020, what would I do differently? What would I

    do the same?

Is there anyone God is nudging me to thank for brightening my life in 2020?

Is there anyone to whom I need to apologize for hur.ng or disrespec.ng in 2020?

What have I learned about myself this past year?

What have I learned about the church?

Where have I seen God at work in 2020?

What was the worst moment of this past year?

    What was the best moment?

What steps am I feeling led to take in 2021 to strengthen my rela.onship with God and

the church? To serve others? To help dismantle racism in our society?

What are my hopes for 2021? For the church? For our na.on?

You may have a different process for le%ng go of the old and moving into the new. If

not, I invite you to join me in reflec.ng on 2020 and se%ng goals for 2021 as ac.on steps

flowing out of Philippians 3:13b-14. A?er all, one of the great principles of Chris.an living is

to put the past behind us and press on toward the future.

As always, it is a privilege to serve as your bishop.

    Avoid the New Years Revolu&ons

It is the (me of year for reflec(on and the mo(va(on to move forward into the

newness of change and growth. However...too many (mes our New Years Resolu(ons

turn into the same as Last Years Revolu(ons. Revolu(on can have duplicate meanings -

on one hand it describes a complete circular path right back to the star(ng point. Too

o/en this describes our New Year desires; we set off to a new direc(on with health, life

goals, or spiritual fervor to only return to old habits of complacency. Romans 7:18 says,

“For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.” Then there is the

alternate defini(on of Revolu(on which is a forceful opposi(on to power. Many

revolu(ons bring liberty to the oppressed but some(mes our exer(on of will is against

God and HIS goodness, mercy, and holy plans. Our repe((ve sin is an a#empt to

overthrow the throne of glory and take control.

So, when it comes to New Year Resolu(ons that all to o/en turn into Revolu(ons...we

simply need to resolve to the best of our daily ability (including effort, inten(on, and

trust) to be obedient to God and love HIM with our everything. I encourage our Youth

and us all to aspire for health; a balanced life, diet, and schedule; and accountable

stewardship of ALL God’s gi/s...but keep the first thing...the first thing: “Love the Lord

your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all

your mind, and, love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) Let us resolve to be

bearers of Biblical truth in all we say and all we do, and let us do it together as a Youth

Group, as a Methodist Congrega(on, and as a Chris(an Community!

    Blessings, Hardin

    Thank you Congregation….

Your Pastor and Staff sends to

you all the biggest “Thank you” for the generous gifts we received through your love offering. Ours blessings come everyday as we serve our Lord Jesus Christ together and these gifts are sweet reminders of His love through each of you. In His love, Your FUMC Staff & Pastor

    (Con(nued)

Here is my simple reflec(on for us at Sco#sboro First.

How can we win more people to Jesus Christ?

Is there with anyone the Holy Spirit is nudging you to share Christ’s love soon?

How can we best nurture our children, youth, and adults in the faith during this (me of

    history?

How can we be vessels used by God in transforma(ve discipleship?

How can we be#er increase rela(ve worship opportuni(es for all ages to worship and

    grow in the Chris(an faith?

Will we be supporters of worship through prayer, presence, witness, service and gi/s?

How can we con(nue to best serve and be in mission to people in our community and

    beyond in 2021?

How will we celebrate our 150th

year of history as a Chris(an Church and how will we

plan to move into the future as Chris(ans?

The days ahead will hold Annual Conference, Jurisdic(onal Conference, and General

Conference. None of us knows for sure how these conferences will affect the life and

future of Chris(anity and Methodism. Will we respond in Christ centered love to all

    people?

Who could we write or call who has brightened our lives in 2020?

How can we help dismantle racism in our community?

What are our hopes for 2021? For our church? For our na(on?

We must remember that no ma#er what the new year may bring, we must keep our

focus on Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and follow Him and His calling in our hearts

and souls and to simply respond by doing the next right thing!

It is a great joy to serve as your pastoral family. Always remember God loves you and

    we do, too!

    Yours in Christ,

    Steve

    2021 “Memorize 100 Bible Verses”

There are many reasons for which we need to memorize God’s Words. As a beginning, Deuteronomy 11:18 tells us to, “write them on your hearts and minds.” Dear one, that is by putting it to memory getting it in our hearts. This reminds me of Luke 6:45 ....“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” NIV. Do you want more intimacy with God? Have you used God’s Word when you pray? His Words are perfect. When you love on God in your time of worship and praise, you can tell Him how wonderful He is by using His own Words. His Words can also reinforce actions needed in your life, like Isaiah 41:10 “ Fear not”; like Romans 1:7 “ live by faith” and even one of favorites is Psalm 1:1-6, He tells us how we can be blessed. Oh my beloved! The ultimate reasons we need God’s Words deep in our hearts is so He can transform us into the image of Christ. He can’t use us like we are. We are too full of ourselves. This year God wants to use you to bless others, to encourage others, to strengthen others. If you have His Words in your mind and hearts, it will flow from your mouth when that person needs to hear from God. I invite you, to begin today. Sherry Herrell

Remember….. It is for the sake of others’ health and safety that everyone must wear a mask

(covering mouth & nose) during in-person worship, keep safe distances, sani&ze hands, and no

food or drink while inside the church. We’re in this together.

UMW thanks all who donated gi/ cards for Safe Harbor. We were able to give $280 in gi/

cards. Safe Harbor is a shelter for Human trafficking vic(ms.
