Your generosity makes it possible for our brothers and sisters in Latin America and the Caribbean to share in the life of the Church and grow closer to Christ. Please be generous to the special collection! To learn more, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.

THE GIFT OF THE WORD OF GOD

Pope Francis has declared this Sunday, the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, to be devoted to “the celebration, study and dissemination of the word of God.” As Christians, we know the importance of the word of God for our identity and daily nourishments. Saint Jerome rightly says, “Ignorance of the Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” In the document Dei Verbum of the Second Vatican Council, we are reminded that “we must acknowledge that the books of the Scripture firmly, faithfully and without error, teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salvation, wished to see confined to the sacred Scriptures” (No. 11). One of my favorite scripture passages is from the book of Timothy, which speaks beautifully on the power of the word of God. “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work” (3:16-17). In instituting the Sunday of the word of God, Pope Francis hopes that “devoting a specific Sunday of the litur-gical year to the word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world.” By praying with the scripture, studying it, and listening to it, we are empowered to practice “mercy,” which Pope Francis believes is “the great challenge before us in life.” It is precisely because of the cost of the disci-pleship that we can’t live without the constant nourishments we receive from the word of God. The theme of mercy is essential to Jesus and to Pope Francis’ teachings. Where do we find strength to practice mercy? So on this Sunday, let’s renew our love for the word of God and let’s make some personal commitment to know the word better and to courageously share it with others and to practice it in our daily living. Peace Fr. Francis

MAKE A DIFFERENCE By Sister Caritas

Many events and sometimes groups, establish a saying or a theme to represent their activities. Exampled of such were “Good men wear black”, “We are all in”, or “Make America great again...” Whether we buy into the idea or like the group, we still hear or see the saying on all the various media presentations, newspapers, caps, shirts, etc. Sayings call us or encourage us to join the effort, team or group. Two of the readings today give us a clear direction and idea. “The people who walk in darkness have seen a great light; on those dwelling in the land overshadowed by death light has arisen.” This “light” spoken of in the Gospel and first reading is Jesus. Today Jesus calls the first four men who would become not just disciples but His apostles. They would be with him, would be trained and then sent to the local area and, eventually, into the whole world to share the light of the Gospel, to everyone and baptize them. We are the descendants of the apostles. We have known the darkness of sin and the absence of God in our lives before baptism. Once we are baptized, we walk in the light who is Jesus. Jesus walks with us; He is in us. Through the Church, scripture and others, we are given the light. Here in our parish, we are nourished by the Holy Eucharist so the light in us increases. We have the urging of the Holy Spirit calling us. The Spirit calls us to respond just as Peter, Andrew, James and John did. They followed without hesitation. We are asked to embrace, keep, hand it on and love our faith. However that is not all we are called to do. We are called to share it, to give it away, to witness to it, and to continue to grow in it each day. Be set on fire by the Holy Spirit and filled with enthusiasm. Our mission, our ministry, is to “Go make a difference in the world. Spread the light. Witness to Jesus and His love.”
