Hello all. 2019 is rolling right along. It is just about October, and we will be “ramping up” our squadron activities and events for the “fall” and “winter” seasons. Many people did, here (on the east coast of northern Florida, and up into Georgia and the Carolinas), and elsewhere, and they need support and help. Hopefully many are stepping up and lending a humanitarian hand. The Nominating Committee (P/C Dave Lum is the chair of that standing committee) is working hard to bring a slate of candidates to the Annual Meeting in November for our 2020 Bridge Officers and Executive Committee Members-at-Large. If you have an interest in serving in a leadership capacity in our squadron, let P/C Dave Lum know ([email protected]). The District 22 Fall Conference is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2019. Information will be forthcoming as it is finalized by the district regarding round tables, the luncheon, etc. A one-day event that will be good to see how the District 22 level operation functions, as well as attending one or more “round-table” events. On October 11-12, 2019, there will be Offshore Power Boat Racing on Fort Myers Beach. Our squadron, in conjunction with volunteers of the Fort Myers Beach Yacht Club, will provide “Patrol Boats” to ensure the general public does not interfere with the race or accidently wander into the race course itself, as well as other miscellaneous duties. As of this writing we have approximately thirty 30 boats (with captains and crew) lined up for the event. It is a huge event and estimates are it will bring over 70,000 people to Fort Myers Beach for the event. This is something the economy of Fort Myers Beach needs, after the really bad times resulting from the issues with the local waters (red tide and algae blooms). Continued om page 3 column 2

We recently made our way over to the Bahamas via the ditch. Although future trips to the Islands may be on hold till hurricane repairs are made – we found out some Okeechobee Waterway lock rules had changed (at least new changes for us)

1. Everyone who is not in the cabin must wear a PFD while in the Lock. We complied but since we only had three of the suspender types, so the fourth person onboard had to wear a regular PFD. We now have five of the suspender types anticipating our next trip. I think this is a good rule.

2. You are required to keep engines running while the lock. I don’t like this rule, but complied. Captain Ted Schindler

From the Administrative Officer Lt/C Nancy Chambers, S.

October brings many of our squadron back

to the area and that's a good thing. It's also a busy month of activities for us. Saturday Oct. 5 is the fall district 22 conference in Punta Gorda and the first squadron bridge meeting of the season will be on Monday Oct 14. Remember all members are welcome to attend and offer suggestions to the bridge. Our first membership meeting will be quad squad meeting held on October 22 at the Cape Coral squadron office with past USPS Commander Louis Ojeda as the speaker for the evening. We should all receive an invitation soon.

This month some squadron members will be working on Fort Myers Beach at the Roar Offshore Power Boat Racing being held Oc 10-12. Although they are fun to watch the boats are dangerous and harmful to the environment. On the positive side they will have good economic impact for FMB businesses for a few days. Hopefully, some first time visitors will return for another stay in the near future. I mention this because it seems we constantly need to find the pathway through economic/ecological decisions. As with the Lake O mess, how do we choose a path that maintains economic stability and also cleans up the waterways? That's a big question we can't solve individually but we can all try to make good decisions on a personal level including using ecological products for maintaining our boats, keeping them well tuned and encouraging all marinas we visit to join "clean marina" program through FL DEP. Every little bit helps!■

On Friday, October 11, 2019, the racers will be practicing on the course in preparation for the actual race on the following day, Saturday, October 12, 2019. Admission to the public is free for the event. Our October Monthly Membership Meeting will be very special in October. On Tuesday evening, October 22, 2019, instead of our squadron Membership meeting at Shell Point, we will join the other three squadrons of the “Quad Squads” (Cape Coral, Fort Myers and Sanibel-Captiva) and have a joint Membership Meeting at which the guest speaker (and only agenda item) will be Past Chief Commander Louis (Louie) Ojeda, SN. The meeting will be at the Cape Coral Squadron’s building, located at 917 SE 47th Terrace, Cape Coral, FL 33914. The tentative schedule is: 5:00 p.m. Happy Hour 6:00 p.m. Buffet Dinner 7:00 p.m. Joint Membership Meeting The dinner consists of pulled pork, black beans, mashed potatoes, lettuce salad, fruit, dessert and drinks (wine, beer, soda included), for a cost of $20.00. From the Exec Officer Lt/C Charlie Richardson, JN.

Hi all, Summer is over and Squadron activities are begining to ramp up again. Audrey and I have spent the past three months traveling in our 40 foot land yacht. We have traveled in: Indiana, Illinois, South and North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming so far. Actually I am writing this in Casper, Wyoming. Regarding Boating, one thing I have observed was the acute awareness about invasive marine life as it applies to boaters and the environment. At any boat launching facility in these states there is an inspection station. All boats, Sail, Power, Canoes, Kayaks and even Paddle Boards must be inspected before lauching. Boats which have been in one body of water must dry for at least five days before launching in a different body of water. They are serious about the spread of exotic life forms. Even fire wood from one state cannot be burned in another state. Closer to home, the Fort Myers Boat Show will be held November 14th through the 17th in downtown Fort Myers. Once again we will be sharing the booth with Fort Myers, Sanibel-Captiva and Cape Coral Squadrons. Continued on page 6 column 1

The Saint Petersburg Trip

In my last article I related the story of our trip up Charlotte Harbor. At the end of the article I told you that we were planning on more trips in the area. In the meantime, Robin and I took the USPS Cruise Planning course. During the course I decided to use the tools that we got from the class to plan a trip to St. Petersburg. We invited our friends, Gregg and Francis to join us for this trip. Continued on page 9 column 1

It is VESSEL SAFETY CHECK time again. The VSC is an annual event, and it allows those that avail themselves of the free safety check to be assured they have all the necessary safety equipment on board their vessel. It also ensures items that have an expiration date are not expired and are valid, such as their fire extinguishers and flares. This squadron service is, or course, available to all members of our squadron and is available to the public as well, such as your friends and neighbors. If one’s boat does not pass, there is no punitive action taken, and it is not reported to any agency. Once the item(s) that needed attention is corrected we will re-visit and re-do the VSC and, when one’s boat passes, issue the current year safety sticker. Contact P/C Ron Terciak to schedule your VSC. ■

Our day to man the booth will be Sunday November 17th. Our goal will be to promote our classes and Vessal Safety Checks. USPS is continuing to develop the transition to America's Boating Club. We will have appropriate signage and our handouts will be supporting this transition. As we get closer to Boat Show time, I will be asking for members to help man the booth on Sunday the 17th. I will break up the times into two hour blocks. As a volunteer you will get free admission to the show. If you have a shirt with the America's Boating Club logo Please wear it during your shift. If you do not have apparal with this logo, your regular Squadron Shirt will be OK. That's all for now,

At our last meeting, I took a poll on seminars that members might like to see. Two of the seminars that received the most votes were “AIS,” and “Partners in Command.” Squadron members will have access to both of these seminars in the coming months. The AIS seminar will be offered as part of the D22 Fall Conference on October 5 in Punta Gorda. The District is providing the seminar FOR FREE, including materials and registration for USPS credit, to the first 15 people who sign up on-line. (To sign up, go to the member home page, select “Find a Boating Course” (on the left), click on “class room course”). At the next screen, check “Seminars,” then use the first pull-down menu select “AIS.” Enter your zip code and check “50 miles” for Maximum Distance. Click “locate” and that should take you to the registration information to sign up for the seminar. On November 26, we’re experimenting with something new. ASEO Al, and Mary Ann Ponzio will offer the “Partner in Command” seminar at Shell Point on the afternoon of our general meeting. The seminar starts at 3:30 PM and runs until 5:30. Then you can join your fellow squadron members for dinner at the Crystal restaurant, and stick around for the November meeting. The seminar will be open to Shell Point residents as well as Squadron members. Sign up using the same basic procedure sketched out above, checking “Partner in Command.” The price of the seminar is $15 (for materials). If you want USPS credit, add $10. Also, if you are looking for an advanced course, you can also sign up for Boat Handling which will be offered on 6 Monday nights starting on October 28. Continued in next column →

Robin and I have almost 4000 miles under the keel of this boat all by ourselves (this the name JustUs). We felt it would be fun and interesting to bring along friends. We left the dock at 11 am on August 6, 2019, bound for Venice. Our departure was delayed when the engine stalled and would not restart. For the first time since breaking my pelvis I lowered myself into the engine room where I bled the injectors and, as a result, the engine roared to life. Continued in next column →

It was our plan to use the ICW all the way to St. Pete. There were scenic views, interesting houses and dolphins galore. We tied up at the Crow’s Nest Marina in Venice, right by the Venice Inlet. We had a lovely dinner in their restaurant and walked to the park at the inlet to watch the Sun set. JustUs has three cabins. Sleeping quarters and galley in the forward cabin and sleeping quarters in the aft cabin. In the center, the wheelhouse all of our socializing is done. Continued on page 9 column 1

While the fore and aft cabins are air conditioned, the wheelhouse is not. Sometimes during this trip the temperature in the wheelhouse approached 100 degrees. It was brutal. The next morning, we took off for Sarasota and Marina Jack. The trip was uneventful until we docked the boat. As I backed the boat into a slip on a dock replete with multi million dollar yachts the transmission cable broke leaving me without the ability to shift out of reverse. The crew on the dock already had our lines so, with them pulling and me killing the engine we landed the boat without damage. Not fun. Back into the HOT engine room I went. I jury rigged a fix, but the Captain had no confidence in my fix. She wanted to return home. After visiting the Ringling Museum, we had a delicious dinner at Owen’s Fish Camp with my cousin. As an aside, I saw the Sarasota Power Squadron having their C & R at Marina Jack that day. We were supposed to leave for St. Pete on Thursday 8/8 but, instead, I had the marina send a mechanic to check out the transmission cable. After tweaking my fix, he pronounced it seaworthy. We decided to leave for St. Pete the next day. In the meantime, we visited Mote Aquarium and had a fun time. Friday, 8/8 we travelled to Saint Petersburg and, despite Tampa bay being a little rough, arrived at the Saint Petersburg Municipal Marina without incident. The St Pete pier is under renovation, so it was a LONG walk to get out of the Marina, but well worth it. In Saint Petersburg we rode the air conditioned “Looper” Trolley all around the city for free. We did some reprovisioning and sight seeing and went out to lunch on the waterfront. It is a pretty city seemingly filled with young people. Continued in next column →

It is a very lively town

Saturday was another museum day. First, we visited the Fine Art Museum across the street from the marina where we saw a wonderful Origami exhibit. Next, we took the Looper to the Chihuly museum where we were wowed by fantastic blown glass and treated to a glass blowing demonstration. After cooling off down below on the boat we went to a Greek restaurant where we were treated to a belly dancing exhibit and a wonderful meal. Sunday, we traveled back to Marina Jack in Sarasota. We wandered the town and visited with my cousin again. We had dinner on the marina deck and enjoyed the unusual cool breezes and live music. Monday found us traveling all the way to Boca Grand for a stay at the Boca Grande Marina. We rented a golf cart and visited the town, the lighthouses and the beach. A very lovely place. We had ice cream in town and dinner at the marina. Tuesday, the last day of the trip had us leaving the dock at 11 am after another golf cart trip into town and to the beach. We stopped to anchor off of Sanibel for lunch and to cool off by dipping our toes in the water. After lunch we hoisted anchor and returned home. Sometime during the trip both Robin and I received our final exam results from the Cruise Planning class. We both passed! The trip was marked by the heat and the rain. One night we walked to dinner and were drenched by a rainstorm that started when we were halfway there. The heat was oppressive in the wheelhouse of the boat. As a result, I am investigating air conditioning for that cabin too. Continued on page 12 column 1

Dress code for the meeting will be “tropical” attire or squadron polo shirts. Please remember to wear your name tags. Past Chief Commander “Louie” is a very entertaining speaker with a long history as a member of the United States Power Squadrons, and he will share a lot of information about the squadrons. A flyer will be distributed in the coming days to set your reservation for the meeting and will provide information as to where to send your check. This Quad-Squad Membership Meeting will, obviously, be in place of our regular monthly Membership meeting for October. Our Squadron Annual Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Shell Point. An important meeting, to say the least. Elections will be held for offices for 2020. We are currently working at scheduling a guest speaker for the meeting. In addition to our Annual Meeting (at 7:00 p.m.), and the preceding dinner (starting at 5:30 p.m.), our very own Squadron Education Officer Melissa Butler has taken an idea that she had, developed it and will present the resulting seminar starting at 3:30 p.m. that day, which will last two hours, until 5:30 p.m., at which time the attendees that attend the seminar will be invited to join us for dinner. Her idea was to offer a seminar that would be of interest to our squadron members, AND to any Shell Point resident that wishes to avail themselves of the important information the seminar will provide. SEO Melissa will cause a seminar, entitled “Partner in Command” to be presented at the special event. Many of our members, Continued in next column →

as well as much of the boating population, has one person that is knowledgeable as to the operation of their boat and has had information presented as to what to do in the event of an emergency. However, in many instances, the person accompanying him or her has very limited or no knowledge as to what to do should the primary person become disabled (medical emergency, falling overboard, etc.) with regard to stopping or operating the boat, calling for help via the VHF radio, etc. This seminar includes topics to cover those instances as well as many other things that may occur that would need the accompanying person to have the basic knowledge to act in whatever urgent emergency arises that the primary person is unable to guide or direct for proper and expedient action. Vessel Safeety Check Lt. Steve Mortonson,P

“Have you ever been boarded by the Coast Guard?” the captain of the gray and orange United States Coast Guard vessel asks as they pull alongside.

After a fun day of fishing with my

wife and another couple this is not what I want to hear! We had had a great day offshore and were headed home. After rounding Bowditch and passing Pink Shell Marina, I notice a Coast Guard vessel ahead of us, near the Matanzas Pass Bridge, with a boat next to it. I make sure we are at the slowest ‘Idle’ possible, move way to starboard hugging the docks on the bay, and continue toward it. A few minutes later the boat they had stopped pulls away from them and several other boats them pass unimpeded. As we get close, they turn toward us.

“Have you ever been boarded by

the Coast Guard?” That was the first thing the Coast Guard captain called out as he and his crew of three approach our boat in their ‘unsinkable’.

“Not yet”, I replied. “You will be now”. “Oh joy” is my thought, but

decide it is best to remain silent. They pull up alongside us and as

the captain starts to climb aboard, even before he is fully on our boat, he says “Don’t reach - Just point.

Vessel Safeety Check Lt. Steve Mortonson,P

Continued from previous column

Do you have a weapon onboard? DON’T’ REACH JUST POINT.”

As the captain and his three crew members intensely watch all of us onboard, believe me, I just point and reply, “We do” and promptly follow his instructions to “Step away” from where it is located. The captain and one crew member come onboard while two others remain on their vessel. They assess the situation, cautiously examining the four of us on our boat. Apparently, we don’t pose a threat and the captain signals for their boat to move slightly away from us.

As expected, “License and registration”

are his next commands. Handing him my driver’s license, I open

the dry box where we keep boat documents, and hand him the white piece of paper I keep in there.

The captain examines my driver’s license, compares it to the white piece of paper, and is not happy.

He shakes his head and says, “This isn’t going to work”.

While I wasn’t totally relaxed before, now I am really nervous. Hands shaking somewhat, heart racing, feeling really uncomfortable.

Handing the white piece of paper back to me and still shaking his head he says, “This is your fishing license. Do you have your registration?”

The other white piece of paper in the dry box satisfies him.

It went well after that. They look at our flares and fire extinguishers, check the expiration dates, confirm one PFD per person onboard, listen to the horn, and look at the MARPOL Garbage Disposal sticker.

Then, he asks, “Do you have a head?” “Yes, we do” I answer, “and the discharge

valve is in the off position and zip tied in place.” Continued on page 13 column 1

The captain smiles and doesn’t even look

at it. “For some reason,” says the captain,

“they’ve decided I’m responsible for enforcing fishing regulations.” While he doesn’t ask for our fishing licenses, though he’d already unintentionally seen mine, he did query, “Did you catch and keep any fish?”

“Yes” “Where are they?” I point to the fish locker, open it, and he

peers in to our pitiful bounty of one Black Margate and one Lane Snapper, both on ice.

“What are they?” and I tell him. He opens the Fish Rules app on his phone, checks season and size/weight limits and says, “Good to go.”

Next, he says, “You have a weapon onboard. Do you have a concealed weapons permit?”

“Yes, we do. Do I need one?” “No - just curious.” He’s now finished with us. He leaves

our bow area and passes by the port side of the windshield, stops, and sees our prominently displayed, CURRENT, bright orange, blue and white Vessel Safety Check sticker and says, “Sorry - I didn’t see this!”

“Well I intentionally put you on my port side as I passed”, which got the three coast guard crew members smiling.

The captain gives a shrug and says, “This would have gone faster if I had seen this”! He climbs back onto his boat and pulls away with a smile and a friendly wave. Leaving us, they turn to port and head across the bay to their station. As luck would have it, we were the last inspection of their shift.

Editors Note: Below is a copy of a column which was in the Nautical Mile Magazine that was written by P/C Bob Moro, of the Fort Myers Power Squadron, which tells of the adventures had while on the April C&R to and from “Lake O”.

Bob’s World

A Lake O Adventure Story

Nautical Mile Magazine - July 2019 Column If you’re a boater in these waters, a trip up the Okeechobee Waterway to Lake O should be on your bucket list. The 60-mile trip from downtown Fort Myers will take you through three locks and miles of mostly rural farm and cattle lands; a deep immersion into Old Florida culture. If you stay in the channels, and don’t stray too far towards shore when there are no channel markers, you’ll find plenty of water under your boat regardless of your maritime station in life. (But as with all boating voyages, there are dangerous exceptions to the deep-water rule. More on that later.) The waterway is usually calm and easy to navigate, but winds and currents can pose challenges. And then there’s the wild west aspect of trying to stay afloat while big cruisers blast by you at 30 knots - just feet from your gunnels - with little to no concern for their boat wakes. Everyone I know who has made the trip feels the same way. You won’t find a lot of common courtesy from passing boaters, but when do we ever see much of that anywhere else?

The four local squadrons that make up the United States Power Squadrons-America’s Boating Club® enjoy a close friendship with one another, and we often host joint expeditions. Such was the case this past Spring, when The San Carlos Bay Sail and Power Squadron invited my Fort Myers Power Squadron to join them for a trip to the Roland Martin Marina in Clewiston, on the southern shore of Lake O. We had nine boats in total, with seven rendezvousing at the Yacht Basin, and two more joining the convoy at the I-75 Bridge in Fort Myers Shores. If your boat can’t manage 25 knots, you might want to consider a solo trip, with plans to overnight somewhere along the way.

Even at 25 knots it’s an all-day trip when you consider the inevitable delays waiting for the locks to open, enduring the slow dance of boats as they gently maneuver astride both sides of the lock walls, secure themselves with the lines provided, and await the closing and opening of the lock doors. (BTW, you want to first grab the spring line in the lock. You’ll look pretty silly clinging to the bow line while your stern wanders away and you find yourself perpendicular to everyone else.) Our journey was not without mishaps. My friend and fellow squadron member Sam Bonilla experienced engine problems and began to fall back at the mid-point of our trip. He heard an ominous “beep beep beep”, and soon could only make 8 knots while still registering 4000 rpms. That’s your

boat crying out for money. He radioed for help, but no one could hear him over the drones of our engines at speed. Then our lead boat strayed too close to the starboard side of the channel near Liberty Point, 5 miles from our Clewiston destination, and caught a shoal that had built up at one of the few turns in the waterway. His fellow boaters pulled him free, but he lost one of his two engines to overheating when his impeller sucked up sand. He caught up with our convoy at the Roland Martin Marina docks an hour after our arrival; limping in under reduced power. But where was Sam? My cell phone rang as we headed to the Tiki Bar, and Sam gave me the bad news: with his impaired engine he

couldn’t fight the strong headwinds and current 10 miles out, and was blown into the mud. Part of our USPS membership pledge is to “render assistance whenever possible,” so fellow member Gene Kent and I headed back out in Gene’s vintage 1989 27’ Wellcraft Antigua for a rescue. It wasn’t easy. By now the easterly winds had picked up to more than 20 knots, joined by a 12-knot current also roaring eastward; propelling us towards the bow of Sam’s boat as we approached the stricken vessel. Sunset was less than an hour away, and Sam and his passengers had been told a tow was many hours away. We had to get him to port. Gene put me on the bow, ready to catch a line Sam would toss from his bow as we approached. Gene struggled to keep the boat in position, but we were moving way too fast. I was reminded of the scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey, as two docking spacecraft twirled, waltzed and pirouetted in beautifully choreographed symmetry to Strauss’ Blue Danube. But the music in my head was more Dead Man’s Curve as we repeatedly blew by the stranded boat - unable to catch a line in the brief moment of opportunity we had. Finally, I caught the line, and dashed to the back of the boat to wrap it around a stern cleat before we quickly drifted out of range. You know what the best thing is about polypropylene line? Me neither. It snapped as soon as there was tension placed on it. Several more passes later we had secured a proper line and pulled Sam free; but now WE had run aground while the line strained as Sam’s boat floated helplessly downriver. Sam quickly plopped into the alligator infested channel and pushed as I pulled from the bow, and finally we were free. We tied up at the dock at dusk with Sam in tow to the cheers of our fellow travelers, safely harbored and well lubricated in the Tiki bar above the dock. If you go, make sure you chat with ‘Cap’n Sam’, the dockmaster at Roland Martin’s. He managed all our docking with skill, bounding from one cleat the next while welcoming all nine of our boats. And he had mechanics and divers at our dock the next morning to help us with repairs. He looks like Popeye if Popeye was handsome. I guessed he was 60, but he’s all of 78. Cap’n Sam lives with his 60ish wife in an old sailboat tied up at the end of the dock, and couldn’t be happier with his life. If you meet him, tell him Bob from Bob’s World says hello. · The announced meeting (at the Beach Grille) for volunteers scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th, 2019 is for ALL volunteers signed up for the motor boat races (they will be mostly assigned to various tasks on land). Attend if you wish to participate in that meeting, but know nothing specific to the Patrol Boat operation will be brought to the fore, so it is fine if you go or if you skip that meeting. Also, Patrol Boat volunteers won’t receive their shirts at that meeting (see the following).

· There is an important SAFETY MEETING scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 10th, 2019 at Diamond Head for ALL Patrol Boat volunteers (captains and crew). Various government officials will be present. At the end of that meeting please plan to stay a short while and the:

o Race Volunteer Shirts will be handed out; o The special flags for the boats will be issued; and o Each captain will receive his/her assignment post/duty for the next two

days (Friday and Saturday, the 11th and 12th of October 2019).

· Unless there is different information forthcoming from the Safety Meeting, we should communicate on VHF radio channel 74 for our Patrol Boat Group. Suggest when you radio in use your boat number as designated by the flag you were issued.

· On Friday, October 11, 2019 the race drivers are planning to “practice” and get a feel for the race course. They will be doing this during the period 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We will have ALL our Patrol Boats there and set up at the assigned locations during the period the drivers are practicing.

This will provide all of us an opportunity to know what our duties will consist of, get a feel as to how to safely prevent the general public from encroaching onto the race course (thereby putting themselves and others in danger), provide escort/direction to race drivers traveling to and from the pit areas, and how our communications will work with regards to calling for a Sheriff’s Deputy, to communicating with each other to arranging for a relief at your post (who must arrive before you leave) for use of the head, obtaining water, lunch, etc. The originator of the call for a relief boat to take

your spot needs to provide an estimate as to how long he/she will be away from the post.

By operating at full-strength on Friday, this will, hopefully, allow our group to avoid confusion and uncertainty on the actual race day Saturday.

· On Saturday, October 12, 2019 we will set up as we did on Friday, with whatever fine tuning was done, and provide the necessary services as we did the day before. The hours for the races on Saturday are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Please know that during our recent meeting Mike Shepherd was conveying to us that Patrol Boat volunteers are invited (as guests) to the various functions, including the parade of boats, Sunday’s awards ceremony, and a get together in the Ball Room, which is why he mentioned all of the events at the meeting.

There are some basic common-sense guidelines that need to be followed by all Patrol Boat Captains and Crew:

· While on your boat(s) it is important that all persons on the boat wear their Personal Flotation Devices, PFD, (life jackets). We “preach” this to the general public in the education classes and it is an important safety issue, so we should all do that which we say is important. The boating safety statistics, year after year, indicate how many lives were lost in boating accidents and incidents and that in the case of the vast majority of deaths the people were not wearing their PFD’s.

· All participating boats must have had a current year (2019) Vessel Safety Check (VSC) performed. Let me know (or your squadron’s Commander) if your boat needs to have a VSC and an inspector will be requested to contact you and perform the safety check. Preferably this can be completed before the week of the races but, if your return is close to the race dates, that can be accommodated then.

· All participating boats must be covered by individual active and current insurance coverage, as obtained and maintained in-force by each boat owner.

· It is important each captain have at least one other person on board to assist with docking, rafting, interacting with the public during the race times, and observing and assisting when needed. No solo captains, please.

· We are performing a public safety function as captains and crews of Patrol Boats. Therefore, obviously, no alcohol consumption just before or during the races and while on post (the potential liability exposure is huge!).

If there are any changes, and/or additional information, it will be communicated ASAP.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask:

Our Public Classes

We offer several classes to increase boater knowledge and skills. These classes are open to the public (membership is not required). The classes are presented as a public service by the Squadron and are

taught by experienced Squadron members America’s Boating Course 3rd Edition ® Is our basic boating class. The class will cover the basics of boat handling, PWCs, required equipment, navigation aids and rules, and dealing with emergencies. It will provide instruction and examination for laws and regulations of the State of Florida. The course is a total of 8 hours spread over two days. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "America's Boating Course 3rd Edition".

Local Waters – Local Charts Is our course for boaters in the Ft. Myers area. The Local Waters class is directed toward new boaters and boaters new to the area, as well as those who wish to learn chart reading. Using Chart 11427, boaters will learn some of the basics of navigation in the Fort Myers Area. Students would bring their own copies of the chart. Read a detailed description of the course by clicking on "Local Waters - Local Chart". Using GPS GPS has become a common tool for navigation. However, using GPS on the water is distinctly different from a moving map display in your car. This 2-3-hour seminar explains the principles of waypoint navigation which you will use. It then shows you how to use the buttons on your GPS and how to relate the GPS to your charts. Using VHF & VHF DSC Marine Radios This class is essential for those with a 'new' radio or those planning to buy a new radio. DSC is operational in Fort Myers. You need to register your radio and learn how it's different. We also cover standard VHF operations. Read a detailed description of the course. Paddle Smart This seminar is intended for those interested in Paddle sports or are considering the purchase of a Kayak, Canoe or other Paddle sport equipment. Read a detailed description of this course by clicking on "Paddle Smart". Hurricanes & Boats This is a mini-seminar. It covers how to select a location and prepare your boat for a hurricane.
