From the Editors:We welcome rally reports, announcements, recipes, repair hints, anything that would be of general interest to our membership. The Tidings is published three times a year: January, May, and September. The deadlines for submitting articles for publication are December 1, April 1, and August 1. Please send all articles for publication to Val Sherer, [email protected], or mail to Tidings Editor, 17 Angela Ave, San Anselmo CA 94960. When sending rally announcements, also send a copy to our webmaster, Rick Newcomb ([email protected]) so he can put them on the TrailBlazer web page (http://tmtrailblazers.org).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR PRIVACYThere have been concerns about publishing member information on websites. In particular, the concern was that listing the names and other address information of rally contacts, directors, etc. might expose those people to harassment or other unwanted contact. The member information published in The Tidings is in a ‘controlled’ distribution. That is, The Tidings is only sent to members. Many times the rally announcements in The Tidings are copied to Internet web sites as a means of getting broader coverage for our events. However, when the rally information is published on the Internet, everyone can read it. So, if you don’t want your personal information (name, address, phone or email address) to be published on the Internet, indicate your desire with your rally announcements or other items you send for publication and we’ll put the notice (not to be published on the Internet) with your personal information.

The President's Corner — Randy Samson

Our Cajun Pres doesn’t know what this “snow” shovel is all about! (Charter spring rally in

Hannibal, Missouri)

It’s been a long, hot and unusual summer for Louisiana and the Mississippi delta. The River at Baton Rouge has remained above flood stage for 211 consecutive days this year, the longest period since the Great Flood of 1927. Last week a huge lightning bolt struck a 100’ tall oak tree just outside our kitchen window, shat-tering the tree, frying our cable service and modem and tripping several breakers. Thankfully there was no major damage and we were not injured. We are now back up and running.

On a much happier note, I want to congratulate our little league baseball team from River Ridge (suburb of New Orleans), Loui-siana for winning the Little League World Series National and World championships this August.

Susan and I enjoyed two Spring rallies in June, (South Central) in Hannibal, MO and (Charter) in Keiler, WI. In keeping with record rising waters, the Mississippi River flooded Mark Twain Campground for the first time ever, and we were forced to evac-uate. Our rally host Susan Luckhurst was a real trooper and we pulled up stakes and went to Keiler, WI a week early and held our rally there also. It was like an extended rally with good friends and good food.

The RV Pro Magazine July issue has feature articles on the Trail-Manor Trailer and the new owners and our TrailBlazers Club. My hopes are that some of this exposure along with social media will help to expand our membership.

Susan and I will be gone during September. We will be attend-ing the Central Northeast rally in Erie, PA September 5-8 and the Charter rally in Morley, MI the following week, September 11-15.

Happy Camping.Randy

News from the TM FactoryGreetings from the TrailManor factory. It has been a

busy summer. We had a little ‘bump in the road’ when a hail storm did damage to some of our new trailers. The good thing was that there were merely small dimples on the tops so they were very salable. Some customers got very good discounts.

Our newest model—MODEL 2518—has proven to be very popular! We are in the process of making new brochures that include photos, specifications and floor plans. As soon as we have that brochure in hand we’ll have it published on our website.

To those of you who visited us at the factory, thank you. It is always good to meet our customers in person and we like hearing about your travels.

We knew it would take a while to gain our footing with this ‘new to us’ manufacturing company; we are now at the threshold—we can feel it. Thank you for your faith in this product and in us.

Our Service/Parts office now has David in charge. So far it seems to be a good fit. He has worked in the fac-tory all along so he understands the mechanics of the trailers.

Watch our website to see the new interior color schemes everywhere—on the walls, floors, cabinets, up-holstery and curtains! They are very snappy and com-fortable to the eye.

This fall promises to be filled with great weather for camping—we’ll be watching for your posts on our Face-book page.

Paul Wipf

Model 2518

This is the first off the line. This is a KB model. This particular unit does not have hanging cabinets. Future units will have that option All the 2518 mod-els will not have a wardrobe. They do however have two nice-sized storage compartments in the rear.

All 2518 models will come with a standard swing hitch. When folded, the unit will be 16’ long. Also due to size constraints, no sink in bathroom. The kitchen sink is right outside the bath-room door. Also comes with cassette toilet. Recirculating toilet will not work in that unit.

Vibes from the Vice President – Larry FennernVisit With Gene And Lois Schaffner, One of Two Couples

Who Were Founding Members of the Trailblazers

Hello everyone. I hope you are enjoying this year’s camping season. While camping in the Phoenix

greater area in May, a highlight for me was meeting and visiting with Gene and Lois Schaffner, one of two cou-ples who were founding members of the TrailBlazers. This founding, along with Bob & Leona Drzmala, re-sulted from a “happenchance” meet-up when they were camping with their TrailManors at the same camp-ground in Rockford, Illinois, in 1993. They became good friends, and as Gene and Bob did not live far from each other, they would meet occasionally at McDonalds to discuss Bob’s suggestion of a club, and the TrailBlaz-ers began.

My introduction to Gene and Lois was also “happen-stance,” as the result of an email I sent to members of the Southwest Group inviting them to consider joining rallies in neighboring states. Gene replied to my email, and we started a dialog in which he modestly men-tioned that he and Lois were original members and offi-cers that started the TrailBlazers club. Since I had plans to camp near them, we made arrangements to meet at the campground where I was staying.

Gene and Lois arrived wearing their original vests and Gene’s signature hat (see photo). I invited them into my TrailManor, “Suite Suzie,” with its much appreciated air conditioning, and together we viewed the TrailBlaz-ers video, “Our History 1993-2015.” The video brought back many memories of the friends they have camped with over the years. I was also very fascinated as they described the joys (and trials) of camping in the three TrailManors they owned over the years!

As you can guess, they had a constant presence in the Charter Chapter rallies and National Jubilees. They served as offi-cers and prepared the original TrailBlazers constitution, which included an associate membership for former TrailManor owner members, making sure that friends could continue camping together at club rallies even if they no longer owned a TrailMan-or. In later life, they began to spend winter seasons in Arizona, and, while they no lon-ger own a TrailManor, they now reside year round in a home at Mesa Regal RV Resort.

Gene and Lois have expressed that if any TrailMan-or owners or former TrailManor owners are passing through the Phoenix area, please contact them and ar-range to have a visit to exchange TrailManor experienc-es. Gene’s e-mail address is [email protected].

Note: Learn more about the TrailBlazers history at http://www.tmtrailblazers.org/, under the menu selection “Photos.” *Thanks to Jim and Mary Grant for document-ing the club history (http://www.tmtrailblazers.org/trail-blazershistory.pdf) and Rick Newcomb for maintaining the Website and recently posting Gene and Lois Schaff-ner’s early history photos under the menu selection “Pho-tos.”

Leaving Hannibal

South Central Heartland Spring Rally

South Central Chapter had a very interesting Spring rally this year, to say the least.

It was planned for the Mark Twain Cave Campground in Hannibal, MO, by host Susan Luckhurst. She had gathered information and brochures for the many activities that were available during the Hannibal Bicentennial Celebration, as well as the Mark Twain River-boat Cruises, and we were very excited about enjoying Hannibal during our stay.

As things happen, on Thursday the camp-ground had to be evacuated because the river was coming up and access to the campground was being flooded. Other participants in the rally were notified of the situation and advised not to come to Hannibal.

Since our 2 units already planned to attend the Charter Chapter rally in Kieler,WI, we de-cided to go there and have our rally.

The weather was beautiful, the food was ex-ceptional, the campground was in a lovely rural setting, and the fellowship was greatly enjoyed!

Charter Chapter Spring Rally June 2019 - Kieler, Wisconsin

We originally planned to do this rally from the Palace Campground in Galena, Illinois, where Johni and Lynda Graham and Mary and I had set up camp to scout the Charter Chap-ter spring rally. In the course of that scouting, we pulled into the Rustic Barn Campground in Kieler, Wisconsin, just over the Illinois border, and in minutes decided that this is where we needed to shift the rally. This campground has level sites, concrete patios, pull-throughs, trees, a rustic barn clubhouse, good bath houses, a chapel, a separate building available for group dinners and spectacular sunsets. If your trav-els bring you to the tri-state area, check out this campground.

On Charter Chapter rallies we generally don’t have lots of group activities but distribute mate-rials and let groups form and head out to their areas of interest. On Friday and Saturday we had groups and couples visiting Galena, the mining museum in Platteville, historic Dubuque, the Grotto in Dickeyville, shooting sporting clays in Waunakee or just sitting around the camp-ground and visiting. We also arranged an op-

tional group dinner at Country Heights Supper Club, a Saturday night potluck and a Sunday morning continental breakfast

We had a total of 29 attendees with the fur-thest traveling from California and our es-teemed leader and first lady, Randy and Susan Sampson, coming up from Louisiana. Five of our members have reached a point in their lives where camping is no longer feasible and stayed in motels but still participated.

This lead to some discussion of the greying of the Trail Blazer organization, the need to reach out to any Trail Manor owners you encounter and to work with the factory and local dealers to make certain that new owners know about our unique organization.

So, we had a great spring rally and are looking forward to our fall rally. A special shout out to Dick and Mary Bailey of Davenport, Iowa, who not only enhanced our rally with their presence but contributed delicious “egg roll-ups” to what was intended to be a continental breakfast on Sunday morning.

New England Pilgrim Chapter Spring Rally

We continued our spring tradition of holding our rally at Ross Hill Park. However, this rally was

anything but traditional, starting with the rally being held late May instead of early May. We did not receive our traditional warm welcome from Nancee and Ron Taylor because they were unable to host the rally this year. More than half the group arrived a day early on Thursday, May 30. That evening we did keep with tra-dition with some of the early arrivers dining at Mr. Z’s Restaurant in Plainfield.

On Friday morning, breaking with tradition, a small group did an easy hike on the Quinebaug River Rail Trail instead of our usual hike at the state park. Anoth-er small group also hiked the trail on Saturday after-noon. Mid-afternoon on Friday, a few of us decided to keep with tradition by getting our licks in and enjoy the wide variety of ice cream at Canterbury Cones. Some traditions should never be broken. By Friday evening, the official start of the rally, all 10 units had arrived. In the evening, we circled our chairs around the campfire.

On Saturday morning, some folks headed to the rec-reation hall to fill up on a traditional breakfast provided by the campground. Two couples who were not able to join us for the weekend, did join us for the day on Satur-day. We broke with tradition again by not having a pot-luck supper. Instead we tried a potluck dessert which was a very sweet change. At noon everyone brought their own light lunch and a dessert to share. After every-one had their fill of desserts, Dick Hamel conducted the business meeting and of course shared a few jokes. In-stead of the potluck supper, we enjoyed a BBQ rib dinner with all the fixings provided by the campground. The

dinner was part of our weekend camping package which included a campsite for two nights, breakfast for two and a BBQ rib dinner for two. Saturday evening we gath-ered around the campfire and shared stories and laughs.

On Sunday morning some of us went to breakfast at the recreation hall again. We all said our good-byes and began packing up. We are all looking forward to the fall rally in Vermont.

A TASTE OF LOUISIANA South Central Spring 2020 Rally

April 23-25, 2020

We will be having our spring rally April 23-25 (Thurs, Fri, & Sat nights) at the Lafayette KOA in Scott, LA.

This is a very special and popular time to visit the Lafayette area. It is the week of the Festival Interna-tional de Louisiane, a music festival that celebrates the connections between South LA Acadiana and the French-speaking world. It is an outdoor non-ticketed festival, and a wonderful opportunity to experience Ca-jun food, music, and culture. The festival is Wednesday through Sunday.

Lafayette is the heart of Cajun Country, and there are many fun things to do, indoors and out. You can take a swamp tour or a Tabasco factory and Jungle Gar-dens tour, or an airboat ride. You can take food, brew-ery, or distillery tours. You can visit museums, such as the Acadian Village in Lafayette, or play the horses or slots at Evangeline Downs racetrack. A Longfellow fan can visit the Evangeline Oak in St. Martinville on Bay-ou Teche. How about Cajun dance lessons?

The rally is 2-3 hours from New Orleans, depending on traffic. To spend time there, we recommend camp-ing on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain or in the Slidell area. Driving across the 26-mile Lake Pontchar-train Causeway is a memorable experience in itself, and you would be about an hour from the Audubon Aquar-

ium of the Americas, The National WWII Museum, the Audubon Zoo, the French Quarter, and the Mississippi River steamboat cruise dock, as well as the beaches in Gulfport, Mississippi. Plan to pay for parking in New Orleans.

There are 3 major cruise lines that sail from New Or-leans. If you would like to visit the Caribbean before or after the rally, April and May are a perfect time to do so.

Camping rates will be $45 /night + 12% tax. With 10 or more sites, we get a 10% discount. If you choose a 4th night, you get 15% instead of the 10%, no matter how many sites we have. Their phone number is (337) 235-2739, or website https://koa.com/campgrounds/la-fayette/. Tell them you are with the Trailblazers group. The deadline for reservations is 2/29/2020, but it is rec-ommended to call soon. They are holding 10 sites for us. If we need more, they need to know as soon as possible. When you make your reservations, please email Susan Samson at [email protected] with your stay dates. Also, please send a check for $10 per person to Susan Samson, P.O. Box 1537, Walker, LA 70785.

Please plan to join us!

CaraMaps, an RV website applied in Europe, has announced a new RVer tool being launched in the US (https://www.cara-maps.com/). The strength of the tool is a detailed, interactive map of the US showing the location of private and public camp-grounds. By clicking on a campground, summary and contact information is provided. This map, in conjunction with other sources of campground information, could be very useful for planning camping outings.

Membership Information

Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions about your membership.

Q. When do I need to pay dues and how much are they?A. $15.00 should be paid by September 30. The address

label on The Tidings will show what year is due. If your label shows 9/14, your membership needs to be renewed. To continue your membership, send your check, payable in US funds, to the Membership Coor-dinator. If you wish to pay for more than one year, just include $15.00 for each year.

Q. Where do I send the check?A. Veronica Zieminski, 2881 Capewood Ln, San Jose

CA 95132. Checks should be made payable to TRAIL-MANOR TRAILBLAZERS.

Q. Why did I not get a bill?A. Bills are not mailed. There is a notice in the May

TIDINGS each year and a reminder in the September TIDINGS and in the directory. In addition, email no-tices are sent to members with email addresses on file.

Q. What if I forget to send the check?A. According to the constitution, reminders will be mailed

the first of January. Anyone not paying by Feb. 28 will

be dropped.Q. Why hasn’t my check cleared my bank? I mailed it sev-

eral weeks ago!A. (Now that we have our accounts in a bank that has of-

fices in several states, this problem will be minimized.) Q. What if I decide to mail my check after March 1?A. You can be reinstated by mailing a check for $15.00 to

the address above.Q. Why am I not getting The Tidings?A. You moved or had an address change. The postal ser-

vice will not forward bulk mail. Any address changes should be sent to the address above as soon as possible or e-mailed to [email protected]. The Tid-ings mailings are in January, May, and September. If you will be at an alternate address at these times, send your alternate address to the Membership Coordinator at least 30 days ahead so we can have the Tidings sent there. Send the Membership Renewal Form with your check.
