A Season of Ministry

The third chapter of Ecclesiastes contains some of the most familiar and poignant scripture verses in

the Bible. "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens, a time

to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot..."

Following the first two chapters of lamenting the meaninglessness and futile pursuits of life, the

writer of this wisdom literature professes that there is more to God's world than useless toil and

chasing after the wind. With the words of chapter three, the author brings a word of hope that

everything that unfolds in life has its season and timing indicating that there is order to God's

universe.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:

a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time

to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to

mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace

and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a

time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a

time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

And yet, even with this knowledge, particularly with the grace of hindsight, we still find ourselves at

odds with God's timing. While we acknowledge that God's time and plan often differ with ours, we

still desire for there to be unity between our will and God's.

Such is the struggle for us now as we come to terms with the departure of Reverend Casey Callahan.

Six years ago, it was the time for Casey Callahan to began a season of ministry with First Baptist

Clemson. During these six years, Casey's ministry has been plentiful and fruitful as he faithfully

nurtured Clemson students in their season of faith preparing them to plant deep roots that would

sustain them throughout their lives. Casey's season of ministry also included his ministry with our

wider congregation which he fulfilled with dedication, grace and a hopeful spirit. Casey's passion for

missions has also produced a good season of strategic focus here at First Baptist, which we will

continue to build upon.

While we lament that the time has come for Casey to begin a new season of ministry at First

Asheville, we rejoice that we have been blessed by his ministry for this period of time. Verse 11 says,

"God has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no

one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end." Only in God's time we will know the

fullness of Casey's time with us, but we do know it has been a bountiful season of ministry.

Please take time to express appreciation to Casey and Martha Ann for their ministry with us, and be

sure to love on Brennan.

Grace & Peace,

Rusty

SECOND HELPINGS

Clemson Community Care We generously fill grocery carts with canned goods and other dry food items each October in support of ongoing ministry of Clemson Community Care...but starting this year, we'll try to help keep those food pantry shelves filled all year long by bringing food items each SECOND SUNDAY of the month. (one way to remember it is this: on FIRST Sundays we bring food to feed ourselves, but on SECOND Sundays we bring food to help feed others.) Here is an updated listing from CCC of food items you can donate: Toiletries, diapers, wipes, canned meats, mixed vegetables, canned and dry pasta, canned potatoes, flour, corn meal, dried beans, powdered or canned milk, tomato sauce and pork and beans. Let us all join in Second Sunday Helpings and continue feeding hungry neighbors right here in Clemson!

Ryan Forbes Celebrates One Year

Time flies when you're having fun! It's hard to believe that our music minister, Ryan Forbes, has been with us for a year. Then again, when you think about all that we've experienced in worship these past twelve months, you realize it's been a very full year. Ryan has and is blessing us with wonderful music and worship leadership as well as a personable and energetic personality that is contagious. Please take a moment to express appreciation to Ryan for his ministry here at First Baptist Clemson. I think the following scripture passage from Ephesians captures much what Ryan brings to our congregation. "Be filled with the spirit. Speak to one another with Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to The Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." (Ephesians 5:19-20)

HELP NET A VILLAGE! KAIROS 10 JEWELRY SALE

HOSTED BY KERRY LEEPER BROCK

MONDAY, AUGUST 11, 2014 4:30-7:00PM BASEMENT

FOR EVERY PIECE OF JEWELRY SOLD AN INSECTICIDE-TREATED MOSQUITO NET WILL BE PROVIDED FOR A FAMILY IN AFRICA

As a board member of His Nets, a non-profit organization that provides and distributes insecticide-treated mosquito nets, I have seen first hand the difference a net can make to a family that cannot afford to purchase a net on their own. Kairos 10, a His Nets partner, uses Ghanaian artisans (paying them four times the average daily wage) to make bracelets (and other jewelry) from beads made of recycled glass and vinyl records. For each item sold, a net is purchased and delivered to a family, keeping that family safe from malaria for approximately 4 years. These bracelets make great gifts that keep on giving by supporting a cottage industry as well as providing the mosquito nets!

For more information about Kairos 10, visit the website at kairos10.com

For more information on His Nets, visit the website at hisnets.org

Can’t come to the party? Ask me about seeing the jewelry another time. [email protected] (864) 654-1743

the supplies they need for school!

Worship in August A group of adults recently returned from Honduras. During worship on August 3, we will hear about this 20 year mission ministry of FBC Clemson and the work of the Spirit among the Honduran people and our brothers and sisters in faith. FBC Clemson has a love and commitment for sharing Christ’s love here and around the world. Let us celebrate God’s presence through missions. On Sunday morning, August 17, our morning worship will include an emphasis on our young students at FBC Clemson. We will focus on this past summer and look forward to this coming year of ministry. During worship, we will hear from our children and adult leaders about PASSPORTkids Camp in June. The camp's theme was based on Jesus’ words, “I am the road (way), the truth, and the life.” Also, our youth recently traveled to Washington DC for a Music & Mission Week. They led day camps for area children in 3 different locations and sang in a mass youth choir of over 200 (YouthCue) presenting a worship concert in the Washington National Cathedral. They have lots to share with the congregation. In addition, we will look forward as we observe Promotion Sunday for our students who move into new classes and experiences. Fall Music Ministry Schedule Plans are being made for our fall music ministries at FBC Clemson. There will be music activities for our children, grades 1-5, Youth Choir (grades 6-12), Chancel Choir for youth and adults, and Handbell Ensemble(s) for youth and adults. The schedule is: Sunday Evenings: 4:45PM—Younger Children’s Choir (grades 1-3) 4:45PM—Older Children’s Choir (grades 4-5) 5:30PM—Youth Choir (grades 6-12) 6:30PM—Handbell Ensemble (youth and adults) Wed. Evenings: 7:00PM—Chancel Choir (older youth and adults) “Celebrating Our Family of Faith” - October 2014 Plans are underway for a month-long worship series celebrating the family of faith at FBC Clemson, past, present, and future. This will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate God’s presence among us and through us. This series of worship experiences will culminate on October 27 with a Homecoming including a good old fashion “dinner on the grounds,” or in our case, “dinner on the floor...gym floor that is!” The worship series will include morning worship on Oct. 5, 12, 19 & 26. Begin inviting folks to Homecoming now. (By the way, Oct. 25-26 is homecoming weekend for Clemson University as well.)

Time for Homework! In August everyone’s thoughts turn to the new school year, whether you are a youngster buying pencils, a teen checking out all the latest fashions, or an adult bracing for the influx of college students. But as you pass all the local vegetable stands full of produce, have you given any thought to planning your garden for next spring? Regardless of whether you already have a garden or are considering your first one, now is the time to do your homework. Once you have your location chosen, consider how you can protect it. What about a fence? You could use chain link fencing or perhaps chicken wire. What about trying something green? Juniper and Leyland cypress are often used around a yard, but other shrubs and trees will work. Using a thorny shrub, such as Rosa rugosa, will also deter trespassers (and this species is relatively deer resistant). Blackberries are deciduous and tend to spread, but they certainly form a barrier and yield a tasty crop! Training Pyracantha as a fence takes work but provides beautiful late-Fall berries that birds love. There are numerous traditional gardening books that deal with eliminating the natural intruders threat-ening your crops and plants, but there are also greener ways to try. Moles and gophers burrow beneath your garden, destroying the beneficial earthworms and the plants from the roots up, respectively. A trench with gravel, dug two feet deep, will make a good physical barrier, but planting Euphorbia lathyris around the garden will repel these critters. Solar-powered vibrators will make their underground habitat intolerable. Pouring a homemade solution of 2 parts castor oil to 1 part liquid dishwashing detergent in a gallon of water into mole holes will drive them away. And don’t kill any king snakes you spot! Years ago we never saw deer in our yards, but now they seem to be everywhere. And they have voracious appetites for our landscape and garden plants. You can go to the expense of double-fencing, as deer have no depth perception and will not try to jump such an arrangement. Or you could use transparent fishing line strung about 2-3 feet high around the plot, as touching it will spook deer (just don’t trip or mow over it). Deer are repelled by strong scents, so hanging fabric softener sheets or even bars of scented soap from posts will help. You can also plant sage or lavender at the edge of your garden. If you won’t be repelled yourself, you can blend together eggs, garlic, water, and Tabasco sauce, let it sit for a few days, and spray that on your garden. These and other suggestions are available from sources such as Sierra Club. Your neighbors or other gardeners you know may have ideas that they have found useful. Humans have long been known as the only creatures who spoil their own nest – God’s creation, Earth – so any time we can work with His world we all benefit.

There is a strong relationship between the Church and the

Foundation. Endowment gifts to the Foundation result in

investment income coming to the Church in perpetuity to

supplement programs and activities in the annual Church

budget. Endowments in the Foundation can be restricted

funds to a specific program or activity of a donor’s

choosing. Or the Endowments may be unrestricted with

earnings spent at the discretion of the Stewardship and

Finance Ministry Team. Gifts can be a legacy for an

individual or a family or a memorial. Building

maintenance, youth programs, music programs and

various missions are some examples of programs and

missions to which the use of earned income every year

from endowments can be directed by a donor.
