new and useful to use in your local unit. Some of you asked about the skit. If you want a copy of it, go to United Method-ist Women skits on the web. It's called "A Woman's Prayer." It was great to see you at the Mini-Mission event, too. It was a great chance to get a little about the class you didn't have time to take at Mission U. I hope you are getting excited about Mission U this sum-

mer. Having lived in Colombia, S.A. for over 10 yrs. and having traveled in Central America, I am really excited about the Lat-in America study. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a study leader for L.A. this sum-mer. Hope to see you at the upcoming events. Barb Brooks, Vice-president

Greetings, I hope all of you are enjoying our winter. For those of us who came from the North, this is so much better than where we came from. The other day, when it was 18 degrees at the beach, it was minus18 de-grees in MI.! Thanks to all of you who helped and participated in the District Officers' Training. GREETINGS FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Well, 2015 really started off with a bang! We’ve hit the ground running with two events in January. Thank you to all of our local officers who attended Officers Training in Aynor. I hope you gained valuable infor-mation to take back to your units. Please be sure to contact any of the District officers if you need more information or clarification on anything. Spe-cial thanks to all the ladies that brought breakfast items, too! If you missed our Mini Mission U, then you really missed a treat. We were blessed to have

two wonderful ladies share a sampling of the classes from Mission U. I hope this tidbit whetted your appetite for more and you’ll consider attending Mission U this summer. It’s a truly great experience. Big thanks to the Latta UMW for hosting the Mini Mission U! Our February event, Legislative Advocacy Day, had to be re-scheduled due to the weather. It will now be held on March 17th. Our Day Apart event is scheduled for April 18th in Bennettsville. Encourage mem-bers and friends to attend.

I’ve enjoyed meeting several of you at the cluster meetings and I hope to meet more at our upcoming events. Thank you for all you do for UMW! Have a joyful Easter! Peace & Blessings,

The Marion District social action focus for 2015 is: 1) Quality SC public education for all of our children 2) Elimination of all forms of violence Unfortunately, as Legislative Day was postponed until March, the updated legislative focus for educa-tion is not readily available. However, any citizen may peruse the status of the 70 current education bills through www.scstatehouse.gov and also obtain the contact information for her representative. The UM Church is a member of the 81-year old South Carolina Christian Action Council and their goal is to ‘raise a reasoned Christian voice in the public square’ about the primary social issues affecting our citizens. The full and equitable funding for high quality education is a primary focus again this year and will be discussed at the May 21st Annual Meeting. (www.scchristianactioncouncil.net) The recent UMW Action Alert (www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/members-leaders/action/alerts.org) focuses upon ‘Futures in Peril: Human Trafficking Among Homeless Youth’ and describes the fate of the marginalized hundreds of thousands of children in America who are dragged into this vile industry. The action steps include some articles to read for better knowledge, web sites to visit, and contact legis-lators. The original ‘Enhancing Services for Runaway and Homeless Victims of Youth Trafficking Act of 2015’ is now in the Senate Judiciary Committee as Bill #S262. Our SC Senator Lindsey Graham is on that Committee and postcards supporting passage of this bill should be directed to him at 290 Rus-sell Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510 and to our other SC Senator Tim Scott at 167 Rus-sell Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510. The most effective means of registering your sup-port is by a postcard that includes your name, your constituency (SC voter), your UMW affiliation, the bill number, and your support or opposition. Another SC resource for information and action is the Eastern Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking at www.eccaht.org Last year our Marion District had 14 Charter for Racial Justice Diamond Unit Award Units. Check out the form and see if your Unit will also apply for the Award! Please let your powerful Christian voices be heard! Although the District has a social action focus, it is understood that UMW Units may have other priorities. I encourage you to find something about which you are passionate and take action. I would also appreciate knowing and sharing what your la-dies are doing through the quarterly publication of The Tie. Please contact me. As of January I joined a wonderful group of women as your Treasurer and I am excited to work with the Marion District Executive Committee. As we all work together let's make this a great year. I would like to thank Martie Campbell for serving as our Treasurer last year and for a great job well done. Remember the First Quarter deadline is March 1st and anything I receive after that will automatically go into the 2nd Quarter report. Please send in your Intent to Pledge form by March 1st. Please fill out all remittance forms completely and order any Special Mission Recognition pins early, allowing 6-8 weeks for delivery. Thanks for all your help and I am only a phone call away. Meet our new Treasurer—Beth Davis

Greetings to my Marion District UMW Sisters! I want to extend a special invitation to you all to attend the Marion District UMW Day Apart Retreat scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Trinity United Methodist Church on Highway 38 in Bennettsville. It will certainly be a meaningful event as we praise God in song, take a look at "Rebekah at the Well" as presented by Rev. Emily Davis and receive a message from Rev Becky For-rest , culminating in open discussion. We will then Commune around the Lord's Table before gathering for lunch! Details and Registration information can be found in this newsletter. I hope to see you all there.

Also, don't forget the upcoming Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska and other important events listed on the UMW Calendar.

Lastly, as we progress through this season of Lent I leave you with this scripture to consider from Psalm 63:1, "O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water." I don't know about you, but sometimes I can get so busy with day to day life that I don't take the time to spend quality time with God and I find myself thirsting for a real connection with Jesus. The season of Lent is the perfect time to draw close to our Lord, reflect on what He has done for us and repent of those actions and thoughts that have been pulling us away from him. It is the perfect time to give up some "me time" and create more "God time". And in so doing our thirst will be quenched and we will be ultimately better equipped to do that which we have been called to do!!

May you be blessed this Lenten Season!

Wow! That’s the best word I can think of to let you know how I feel about all of the positive feedback I received on my first issue of The Tie. You ladies really know how to make a girl feel good!! I hope this issue will be received just as well. My apologies to the ladies who couldn’t open their digital copy of the newsletter. Technology can be a stinker! Also, if any of you have ladies in your unit that are receiving a hard copy of the newsletter but they have an email address, please send me their name and email information so we can try to reduce the num-ber of copies that are being mailed. Let’s save a few trees! Be sure to send me any interesting tidbits or projects and activ-ities that your church or local unit is involved in. Send pic-tures, too, if available. We want to hear what our UMW units are up to! The deadline for the next issue is May 15th. I hope to see you at one of the upcoming events! Shalom!

Greetings from Wallace Family Life Center By the time you read this, we hope to have filled the position of Executive Director. I am sure you all join the Board in wishing Ms. Corina Esaw God’s blessings in her new endeavors. We are grateful to our Program Coordinator, Antoinette Balfour, for stepping in and fulfilling the duties as Interim Direc-tor. This is in addition to her own duties. New fire compliance doors (with panic bars,) have been installed on all doors with outside access. Our next project is to get the inside doors up to Safe Sanctuary standards. All this is accomplished because of the wonderful support you continue to give WFLC. Another way you support is saving soup labels. We have enough labels to get 2 new computers. God bless the soup eaters! On January 29 we started a partnership with PEAK Children’s Defense Fund Afterschool Program. They provide a teacher and a teacher assistant, as well as offering training to our WFLC staff. They are on site on Mondays and Wednesdays, assisting with homework/tutoring and in addition offer Integrat-ed Reading Curriculum. We are so proud of the children who are in our After School program. We average 25 and it is heart-warming to see the progress that the students are making. All of our children were sponsored by one of our churches in Operation Christmas Child. Another donation was received for $150 and this was used for other children in the community. These are only a small sampling of what is done for WFLC and I am humbled by the way you ladies (and gentlemen) answer God’s call to reach out in mission In addition we have the Adult Education Class and Arts / Crafts once a week. The Annual Christmas Dinner was a great success, with 60 people in attendance. We were so thankful that a volunteer from the community helped to coordinate it. The Center is in need of a freezer (with a lock.) Call the Center if you think you can help. Blessings, Garvin Gilley, SCCUMW Representative to WFLC

Attendees at Marion Cluster Meeting held at Shiloh UMC in

Marion

The Marion Cluster held it’s cluster meet-ing on February 14 at Shiloh –Marion. Four officers from the Executive Commit-tee and ladies from three of the area churches were in attendance. Sally Hayes, Cluster Leader asked each officer to talk about their Board positions which resulted in a lot of questions from the other ladies. Each of the area churches left with a clear-er understanding of the Executive Board and what was needed from each local unit. It was a very cold day so each lady who attended has my deep appreciation. Sally Hayes, Marion Cluster Leader

South Carolina United Methodist Women Spring Days of Service

March 2015

Rather than traveling outside our state to work at other projects this year, let us concentrate our time and efforts right here in South Carolina. Let's get women to all five of our projects to help in the specific

needs requested by our directors and then share our stories with women who visited different projects when we gather for School of Mission u.

Our main event will be a three day work camp experience at Rural Mission, John's Island SC. Arrange-

ments have been made for us to travel there on the morning of Monday, March 23 and be there until early afternoon Wednesday, March 25. Each of us will be responsible for arranging our own

transportation and lodging (see Registration Form). Work being arranged for us includes yard work, cleaning, office work and painting. Our registration fee includes $50 per person for materials to be

purchased there (supporting the economy there and keeping us from having to transport materials). The complete schedule is attached.

If you can't travel to John's Island pick another project and go there for the day. Each group can made arrangements with the staff of one of our projects and set up a time, place and activity. Some tasks that

were needed include planting garden plots, weeding, painting, cleaning, reading with children and much more. Contact information for each is below.
