P6 kicked the year off with our first unit of inquiry into Public and Virtual Spaces with a goal of
creating a Mother Tongue section of the Library. The children’s understanding was deepened after
spending the day with the team at Atelier d’arts & Architecture.
Anna K Andersson
The body systems unit in P6 was enhanced with the help of Anna who took us on a journey of the
interconnectedness of the body systems.
Martijn Rauwers was instrumental in driving the P6 inquiry deeper into understanding the complex
ways to clean the environment with a particular focus on the Ganges & Yamuna Rivers of India. He
introduced the P6 children to the idea of Value Charts which demonstrates ways to change waste
to energy. Martijn was very impressed with how well P6 grasped this concept and were able to
create their own Value Chains. He later returned to P6 to view their Value Chains, he took photos
of the children’s work and will use them when he presents this concept to the Modi government
later this month.
Martijn Rauwers presenting the Value Chain in recycling waste into energy.
Steve Dykes and his team at Decathlon provided P6 with an amazing provocation into our last unit
of inquiry on ‘images communication information and ideas’. P6 gained great insight into how
Decathlon uses images in their marketing and branding and the importance of colour combinations
and their meaning.
Steve Dykes CEO at Decathlon & P6D parent and his team sharing their knowledge with P6
Robin Paxton and Patrick Graham of Thomas Reuters provided our P8 students, Ida and Kensuke of
the Fake News Exhibition Team, with valuable information to aid their understanding of what is fake
news, why is it happening and how to spot fake news. The P8 Fake news team had a very
insightful interview with our two P6 parents and gained a much clearer understanding of Fake
News. Ms. Debs was the ‘Fake News’ Team Mentor.
Robin Paxton of Thomas Reuters with Ida & Kensuke P8 the Fake News Team
Katie Erricker, Nitu Tripathi and Daniela Wolf were an integral part of our reading programme this
year. They guided our students regularly every week and helped them achieve their goals.
Liliana Montoya was a chaperon during one of our field trips. She accompanied us to the Alliance
Francaise and the British Library where students looked at the design of two different libraries to
create their own Mother Tongue Library Space.
Robin and Jenine Paxton were chaperons on two different P6 field trips one to Atelier d’arts &
Architecture and Lal Bagh park. Robin also accompanied us for our campout sleepover at school.
Thank you to all those that contributed to our year.

The P3 Students and their Recent “Sharing the Planet” Unit
The P3 students have been enthusiastic inquirers throughout the year and are excited about moving
on to P4 next year. With this transition, they move from being Early Years students to being Lower
Primary students. We know that they will be bringing with them their passion for inquiry, their
willingness to be risk takers as well as their caring nature with them.
The P3 students have just finished their “Sharing the Planet” unit of inquiry. The central idea was
‘When interacting with natural habitats, humans make choices that have an impact on other living
things’. The students began by conducting research into different habitats and then by working
together in groups as they made models of different habitats.
The students then considered the responsibility they have to protect natural habitats and the plants
and animals that live in them. When asked what she learned in the unit, Ellie said that we have to
show respect to animals and take care of the habitats they live in because they are their habitats
and not just ours. During our unit, P3K put this sentiment in to action when they noticed one
morning that there was a small colony of ants living on the edge of their garden beside the
walkway. The students used string to cordon off the area and made signs asking passers-by not to
disturb the ants that were living there.
At the culmination of the unit the students all made their own video where they gave an example of
how they can help take care of a natural habitat and protect the plants and animals that live there.
In her video, Alison spoke about how to make sure we do not pollute the oceans.

Unit of Inquiry - How the World Works - P6
P6 have reached the end of another excellent unit of inquiry, this time a study of the Earth’s
changing atmosphere, why it is changing and how we respond to those changes.
Provocation
We explored the difference between weather and climate and understood wind speed, temperature
and precipitation, as well as measuring and describing weather.
Using the world, map we identified and labelled continents, oceans and areas of different
temperature.
We have explored weather conditions, how weather affects the environment (flooding, typhoon,
snow & ice, rivers, erosion, wind, coastline) and the changes in the atmosphere and their long term
effect on the Earth.
We identified several factors that are making significant changes to the Earth’s atmosphere such as
pollution, global warming, rising seas, construction, land reclaimation, deforestation, habitat
destruction and mining. We saw the impact of these through observing time lapse footage and
images of changes to landscapes.
During this unit of inquiry we decided to take ‘Action’ and link our learning to Earth Day by
informing the Stonehill PYP about Global Warming. An extra assembly was organised to give us the
opportunity to present our informative acts. We presented a mime, role play and a rap song. We
loved performing for the PYP.
We had a skype interview with Glaciologist & Geophysicist Ms. Emma Smith, who works in the
Antarctic studying the melting ice.
Using library books and the internet we paired up to research specific issues that are causing the
Earth’s atmosphere to change. We wrote our findings using an information text genre, then wrote
the information as a report. We used our report to broadcast live just like a real news reporter.
In the link below, you can find our information text with some significant photographs of our
chosen issue along with our new report. We thoroughly enjoyed creating this news report.
Summative Task
On the link below you will find P6 news reports about the Earth and its changes. Click on the icon,
view the children's research writing and their photos along with their live news reports.
The children have had a tremendous time working on these reports, let them share their learning
with you as you watch their videos. Make sure you view all the videos.
P6 have a solid understanding of the central idea of 'How The World Works' unit of inquiry.

The Importance of Doing Maths over the Summer Holidays
As the summer holidays rapidly approach, it may not be what you children want to hear, but it is
REALLY important that you do not spend the whole holiday “Maths Free”. Studies have shown that,
on average, students lose 2.6 months of learning in maths over the summer – and teachers have to
give up weeks of class time in August and September to make up for that loss.
Many parents, and children, do not think about maths existing outside of the classroom. “Parents
often think that their kids learn maths in school, and that it’s sort of the school’s domain,”
says Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) doctoral student Kathleen Lynch. Many parents
“may just be less inclined to do maths at home,” she says. Research also shows that 1 in 3 parents
are unable to help their teenage children with High School Maths.
So, how do we avoid the Summer Maths
Slide? Well, even doing ten minutes of
maths a day has been shown to reverse
the loss by a third. In the Secondary
School students have access to MyiMaths
(www.myimaths.com) and Mangahigh
(www.app.mangahigh.com) over the
summer, which are both great sources. In
addition, the electronic maths textbooks
through snowflake
(www.snowflake.haesemathematics.com.
au) should be available to review and
practice the topics covered throughout the
year.
For those who want something more
challenging NRICH is a great place to start
(www.nrich.maths.org/7358) as it
contains collections of problems. It is also
recommended that students get outside
and are active as this can also improve
concentration. As well as these great
sources try to make use of the maths all
around us from distances and timetables,
to change at the supermarket. So, try to
avoid the Summer Maths Slide by taking
action – it will make a difference!
