Lesson 19: The Sacrificial System Readings: Leviticus 1:1-7:38;

Supplemental Reading: Sacrifices: Their Order and Meaning (page 33)

In some respects the sacrificial system outlined in the Book of Leviticus isn't worth much study time. The system was not able to atone completely for sin (Hebrews 10:1-4) and is obsolete (Hebrews 9:11-14). Yet, the system was in place for God's chosen people for around 1,500 years and was kept by our Lord (Matthew 5:19-20, Luke 5:14). Many principles of the system remain in force today. So a brief look at the system is warranted.

Questions: 1. In the space following each reference below write the name of the type of sacrifice mentioned in that passage. (All references are from Leviticus.)

a) 1:4

b) 2:1

c) 3:1

d) 4:3

e) 5:6

2. Within the classification “burnt offering” there were three types of sacrifices. Each type is listed in the verse below. Write the sacrifice type after each reference.

a) 1:3

b) 1:10

c) 1:14

3. In each case, whichever type was offered, what kind of aroma was produced? (see vss. 9, 13, 17)

8. What special requirement was made on the altar of fire (Leviticus 6:13)?

9. Define “restitution” (Leviticus 5:16). In what situation was it demanded?

10. What different sin offerings were required of the following? a) Whole congregation (4:13-14)

b) A ruler (4:22-23)

c) A common person (4:27-28)

Application: 1. What parallels can you draw between the sacrifices under the law of Moses, Christ's offerings, and our offerings?

Sacrifices: Their Order & Meaning Taken from : THE TEMPLE, Its Ministry and Services as they were at the Time of Christ by Alfred Edersheim

Every unprejudiced reader of the Bible must feel that sacrifices constitute the center of the Old Testament. Indeed, were this the place we might argue from their universality that along with the acknowledgment of a Divine power, the dim remembrance of a happy past, and the hope of a happier future, sacrifices belonged to the primeval traditions which mankind inherited from Paradise. To sacrifice seems as 'natural', to man as to pray, the one means a felt need of propitiation; the other a felt sense of dependence.

The fundamental idea of sacrifice in the Old Testament is that of substitution, which again seems to imply everything else — atonement and redemption, vicarious punishment and forgiveness. The firstfruits go for the whole products; the firstlings for the flock; the redemption money for that which cannot be offered; and the life of the sacrifice, which is in its blood, for the life of the sacrificer. Hence also the strict prohibition to partake of blood.

At the very threshold of the Mosaic dispensation stands the sacrifice of the Paschal Lamb connected with the redemption of Israel, and which in many respects must be regarded as typical, or rather anticipatory, of all the others. But there was one sacrifice which, even under the Old Testament, required no renewal. It was when God had entered into covenant relationship with Israel, and Israel became the people of God. Then Moses sprinkled the blood of the covenant on the altar and on the people. On the ground of this covenant-sacrifice all others rested.

These [other sacrifices] were, then, either sacrifices of communion with God, or else intended to restore that communion when it had been disturbed or dimmed through sin and trespass sacrifices in communion or sacrifices for communion with God. To the former class belong the burnt- and the peace-offerings, to the latter, the sin- and the trespass-offerings.

The general requisites of all sacrifices were — that they should be brought of such things, in such place and manner, and through such mediatorial agency, as God had appointed. Thus the choice and the appointment of the mode of approaching Him, were to be all of God. Then it was a first principle that every sacrifice must be of such things as had belonged to the offerer. None other could represent him or take his place before God.

The readiest, but perhaps most superficial, arrangement of sacrifices is into bloody and unbloody. The latter, or Minchah, included, besides the meat and drink-offering, the first sheaf at the Passover, the two loaves at Pentecost, and the shewbread.

In scripture, [of bloody sacrifices, we find] three kinds of four-footed beasts — oxen, sheep, and goats; and two of birds — turtle doves and young pigeons — are appointed for sacrifices. The latter, except in certain purifications, are only allowed as substitutes for other sacrifices in case of poverty.

Of great importance is the arrangement of sacrifices into the most holy and the less holy, which is founded on Scripture. Certain meant-offerings and all burnt, sin, and trespass-sacrifices, as well as all public peace-offerings, were most holy. Such were to be offered or sacrificed in one of the more holy places; they were slain at the north side of the altar and they were either not partaken of at all or else only by the officiating priests, and within the court of the Temple. The skins of the most holy sacrifices, except such as were wholly burnt, belonged to the priests; those of the less holy to the offerers. In the latter case they also partook of their flesh, the only exception being the firstlings, which were eaten by the priests alone.

The Rabbis mention the following five acts as belonging to the offerer of a sacrifice: the laying on of hands, slaying, skinning, cuing up, and washing the inwards. These other five were strictly priestly functions catching the blood, sprinkling it, lighting the altar fire, laying on the week, bringing up the pieces, and all else done at the altar itself.
