o Insert the camera body into the back case andput both case hooks around the camera's st rapeyelets. The camera body is now held securely inthe case.o The standard sof t case comes complete wi tha f ront cover.o To remove the f ront cover, turn the cover a fu l l180 ' wh i l e pu l l i ng i t s l i gh t l y t owa rds you and t hefastener of the cover unlocks.

To mount or interchange Pentax K, KA and Kf mount lensesfol low the steps below. (For screw mount lenses, see p. 57).

o Remove the body mount cap and the rear lens cap. l f the f indercap is st i l l on the eyepiece, remove i t . (For the f inder cap, see p.53).o Al ign the red dot on the camera body wi th the red dot on thelens (SeeO,@.). Seat the lens in the body mount and turn i tc lockwise unt i l the lens locks wi th a c l ick. When mount ing the lensin d im l ight , methoO (O) is recommended. This method al lows lensmount ing by touch. Al ign the ra ised node on lens barrel wi ththe lens re lease by touch. Then turn and lock as above.o To remove the lens cap, press in on the notches at both sides.o To remove the lens, press the lens release lever toward the camerabody whi le turning the lens counter-c lockwise.o Af ter removing a lens f rom the camera body, replace the f rontand rear lens caps to protect the lens f rom dust and sta ins.

Note: Don' t damage or sta in theelectr ical contact points on themount face. When they becomestained, wipe them with a c lean,dry c loth.

Make sure tha t the d ia l i ssecure ly locked in pos i t ion , by re leas ing the lockbut ton and s l igh t ly ro ta t ing the d ia l to e i ther s ide .The chart below represents the index markings onthe Super Program ASA/ISO f i lm speed scale. Themidway markings are not effective.

Memo Holder/Gr ipAs a reminder o f the type o f f i lm in your camera ,tear of f the top of the f i lm package and insert i t inthe memo ho lder f rame on the gr ip a t the r igh t endof the back cover. The gr ip is shaped to g ive yourthumb a f i rmer ho ld on the camera .


FILM LOADING

Load the camera wi th a 35mm f i lm cart r idge. Load or unload thef i lm in the shade, avoid ing di rect sunl ight . Set the shut ter d ia lindex (red l ine) to AUTO or M. This wi l l automat ical ly set theshutter speed to 1/1000 sec. so that you can advance f i lm quicklyunt i l the counter registers "Q".

o The camera back opens when you l i f t up sharply on the f i lmrewind knob.

o Insert the f i lm cart r idge in the f i lm chamber and lock the cart r idgein p lace by returning the f i lm rewind knob to i ts or ig inal posi t ion.

l f the knob does not f i t t ight ly in to p lace, rotate the knob whi lel ight ly depressing i t .o Draw the f i lm leader across the back and insert i t between anyof the whi te needles surrounding the f i lm take-up spool . Insert thef i lm in the d i rec t i on shown in the i l l us t ra t i on .

o Sl ight ly wind the f i lm by advancing the f i lm wind lever to theposi t ion indicated in the photo, whi le making sure that both topand bot tom sprockets engage the f i lm perforat ions.

o L igh t l y ro ta te the f i lm rew ind ing knob un t i l any s lack i s taken up ,and conf i rm that the f i lm is proper ly f i t ted between both guiderai ls . Close the back cover t ight ly .

o Advance the f i lm wind lever to check that the red vert ical s t r ipesof the f i lm wind/rewind indicator f l icker; th is indicates that thef i lm is advancing proper ly. F i lm advance can be also checked bythe rotat ion of the rewinding knob.

o Repeat shut ter- t r ipping/ f i lm-advancing operat ion unt i l theexposure counter reaches to "0" . The next f rame is ready forthe f i rs t shot .


The spl i t - image center spot and i ts surroundingmicropr ism col lar are br ighter and easier to focusthan the matte f ie ld a l though any of these can beused for focusing.Vis ib le at the bot tom inside the v iewf inder are twoLCD displays for shut ter speed and aperture value.In addi t ion, v iewf inder informat ion includesauto/manual exposure data for each exposuremode, automatic f lash data, exposure compensationwarning, low bat tery warning, and error indicat ion.

You can focus in three ways, wi th the spl i t - image,micropr ism, and/or matte f ie ld. To focus using thesp l i t - image, tu rn the ' focus ing r ing un t i l the twoimages in the spl i t - image c i rc le at the center ofthe focusing screen are perfect ly a l igned. Whenus ing the mic ropr ism co l la r , focus un t i l the g l i t te rdisappears f rom inside the col lar . With the mattef ie ld , focus un t i l the image on the mat te f ie ldappears sharp and cr isp.Note: l f the maximum aperture of the at tachedf ens is smal ler than t15.6 ( for example, f /8 as inthe case of a long te lephoto), i t is easier to focuson the mat te f ie ld s ince the sp l i t - image andmicropr ism col lar areas become much too dark forsatisfactory focusi ng.

Diopter adjustment for viewfinder eyepiecePeople who wear eyeglasses due to myopia,hypermetropia or presbyopia, somet imes f ind i td i f f i cu l t to focus wh i le wear ing the i r g lasses . In th iscase, use the accessory diopter correction lensesM (See page 55).

Proper hold ing of the camera is essent ia l to minimizecamera shake which causes blurred pictures.Pract ice hold ing and operat ing your Super Programbefore insert ing your f i rs t f i lm cart r idge.General ly there are three basic ways to hold thecamera. In any case, hold the camera t ight ly to you rface wi th your hands. Accessory Gr ip Super A andthe memo holder lgr ip wi l l help you keep a steadyhold on your camera. Release the shut ter gent lywhi le s lowly breathing out . Strong pressure on

the shut ter re lease but ton may cause blurredphotographs. Take a secure, wel l -balanced posturewi thout s t ra in ing yourse l f . The por t ion marked Oin the i l l us t ra t ion shou ld be drawn te your body .I t is a good idea to stabi l ize your body and thecamera using a t ree, bui ld ing wal l , table, etc.For long exposures or whi le using te lephoto lenses,i t is recommended to use a t r ipod and a cablerelease in order to reduce camera shake tothe m in imum.

U N L O A D I N G T H E F I L M

Whdn the last f rame of the f i lm has been exposed, the f i lm shouldbe rewound into the cart r idge before unloading f rom the camera.Do not force the wind lever beyond the number of f rames indicatedon the f i lm cart r idge.

To unload a cartridgeo Depress the f i lm rewind but ton.

o Turn the rewind crank in the di rect ion of the arrow to rewindt h e f i l m .

o The red str ipes in the f i lm rewind indicatorwi l l f l icker dur ingrewinding, and they wi l l cease f l icker ing when rewinding iscompleted.

r Af ter rewinding, l i f t up sharply on the f i lm rewind knob toopen the camera back and remove the f i lm cart r idge.

Note ' : Should you erroneously open the back before rewinding, donot leave it open. Close it immediately. The last few frames may beruined by di rect l ight exposure, but the major i ty of f rames on therol l may st i l l be unharmed. Whenever possib le, i t is a lso advisableto take the same pictures again wi th a new f i lm.

PENTAX T'A'' LENS.

To set the lens in the A posi t ion, match the A- index (green l ine) onthe aperture r ing to the o index mark whi le depressing the apertureauto lock but ton. Release the but ton to lock the lens in the Aposi t ion.To release the lock, rotate the aperture ring towards aperture scalewith the auto lock button depressed.

Shutter d ia l is automat ical ly locked when set at the AUTO posi t ion.To select other posi t ions (L, M, 125X or B) rotate the shut ter d ia l ,depressing the shut ter auto lock but ton, and match the index(red l ine) to the desired posi t ion. Manual shutter speed select buttonIn the Shutter-priority AE or Metered Manual mode, select the desiredshutter speed by depressing either of the two buttons next to the shutterdial. The digital f igure on the shutter speed LCD indicator increasesor decreases step by step as you press the buttons. The front buttonstops at 2000 (1 I2OOO sec.) , and the rear but ton at 15" (15 secs.) .

Precautions for shutter speedl f you shootat shut ter speeds s lower than 1/60 sec. (30 - 15" onthe LCD), you may occasio,nal ly get b lurred pictures. l f youcouldn' t use a faster shut ter speed due to l ight condi t ions, the useof a t r ipod or f lash uni t is recommended. The use of f i lm wi thhigher sensi t iv i ty wi l l a lso help avoid such low shut ter speeds.


o LCD displays on the camera top cover and inside the v iewf inder f l icker to warn of var ious rproblems.

o The LCD displays in the table below show the examples. They vary depending on the lens ispeed (ASA/ISO), or the subject 's br ightness.

o The external shut ter speed LCD provides the same f igure as the shut ter speed informat ionthe v iewf inder does.

These show beyond the meter coup l ing range in the Shut te r -p r io r i t y AEmode. Cor rec t exposure cannot be ob ta ined.

These warn ings appear in the Metered Manua l mode. - t3 means you arethree s tops over normal exposure . -3 means th ree s tops under . Ad jus ta p e r t u r e o r s h u t t e r s p e e d u n t i l y o u s e e t h e t 0 s i g n .

o Depress the auto lock but ton on the aperture r ing of yourPentax "A" lens, and rotate i ts A- index (green l ine) to the index.

o Set the shut ter d ia l index (red l ine) on top of the camera to theAUTO pos i t ibn . "P" (Programmed) w i l l then be d isp layed onthe LCD windows on the camera's top cover and inside theviewf inder.

o L ight ly press the shut ter re lease but ton, and a programmedcombinat ion of shut ter speed and aperture value wi l l be displayedon the LcD indicator in the v iewf inder. At the same t ime, thesame shut ter speed wi l l appear in the external LCD indicator .Further pressure on the but ton wi l l re lease the shut ter . When youtake your f inger off shutter release button, the meter switchautomat ical ly turns of f af ter about 30 seconds as an energy-savingmeasure, and the displays of shut ter speed and aperture valuedisappear. However, the "P" d isplay remains on.

Programmed AE mode warningsWhen the programmed combinat ion of shut terspeed and aperture value is beyond the metercoupl ing range, the camera displays two warnings.
