What if???
Apple just announced the latest (and most expensive) iPhone in history!
It has more abilities than its predecessors and will reinvent the personal
smart phone market… again.
Do you know the story of why the iPhone was invented? The original
iPhone was introduced in 2007 as one product that combined an iPod
with a phone and purchasing device. Steve Jobs introduced the most
unusual product in years.
The new device basically combined a music listening machine with a
cell phone that had computer features. But what got Apple thinking of
this concept?
According to Steve Jobs, he was competing with Microsoft, Blackberry
and a host of other companies. Jobs hated the way cell phones
functioned. He questioned their assembly, design, materials, purpose
and the results consumers were getting from them. What if you could
combine your music device so you don’t have to carry two on you at all
times? What if you added the capabilities of a computer to your phone
and music/video listening device? What if you had a screen that
wouldn’t scratch easily? What if you didn’t have to use a tiny keyboard
to type information?

Mechanical Engineering Consulting Associates, Inc. (MECA) is a mechanical engineering design firm located in Columbia, SC dedicated to providing quality designs in the field of mechanical engineering through-out the Southeastern United States. Our primary areas of expertise are plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), fire protection, piping systems, control and energy management systems (EMS) for commercial, educational, institutional/healthcare, historical buildings, and industrial facilities. Design formats include design-bid-build with architects and owners as well as design-build with numerous contractors.
MECA was founded in 1979 by Bob Light and Donny Pittman and has grown to a staff of 19 engineers, designers, draftsmen, field specialists, and clerical personnel. The firm transitioned ownership in 2017 with Kevin Stanley, President; Phil Claytor, Vice President; and Gene Wilson, Vice President as the management team. Over the past forty years, MECA has participated in the design of some of the region’s most innovative buildings employing a variety of system types over a diversified market portfolio. LEED certification is often requested and implemented in our designs.
MECA is committed to maintaining a current knowledge of new developments in our areas of expertise, as well as employing recent graduate engineers to ensure the future of the firm as a leader in the engineering field providing the best possible service to our clients.
We continually endeavor to evaluate the merits of evolving technology and apply it effectively to help our clients produce quality, efficient, comfortable, and cost-effective environments. In to-day’s market of increased environmental regulations, air quality concerns, rapidly evolving tech-nology, and competitive market pressures, every building owner, operator, and developer needs a design team dedicated to maintaining a working knowledge of currently available technology.
We are fully REVIT and BIM capable and use AUTOCAD when preferred. MECA also uses Trane TRACE 700 software to model buildings to provide energy usage data and life cycle cost analysis as well as load profiles.

“Tool Box Talks” - Safety Tip
JOB TRAINING IS A MUST
Reams and reams of paper have been used in efforts to convey to all concerned the full
responsibility of those at the supervisory level for the prevention of accidents in construction.
Included in supervisory responsibility, and with high priority, is the training of the new employee
for the work he or she is to perform.
All too often new employees are hired, given their assignment, and are then expected to perform
efficiently and safely without adequate job instruction. Even new employees with previous
experience often need retraining and reorientation if job efficiency is to be maintained, for all skills
and work habits the worker must possess must be taught to him or her. Training begins when the
employee is hired if our efforts are to be most effective.
Who, then, should be responsible for training the new employee? We believe, and it is generally
agreed, the logical person to impart the required knowledge and technique required for the job is
the safety supervisor or the worker's immediate supervisor. They are in the best position to give
actual on-the-job instruction and, in addition, they are persons to whom the employee will be
directly responsible. This accomplishes two things: First, it makes for job efficiency and Second,
it manifests interest in the employee's welfare.
What should we teach and what procedures should the supervisor follow? Quite logically, the
supervisor's task is to instruct the worker on the job to be done so he or she can produce it in as
short a time as possible. Yet, safety precautions should be taught by the safety supervisor prior
to beginning the job. Specific job hazards should be pointed out in connection with each phase of
the job, and instruction should be given on specific safe work practices that will help him avoid
these hazards. Poor instruction or none at all results in injuries and production inefficiencies due
to the supervisors not organizing all the important parts of the job clearly before actually giving
instruction.
Many organizations have found from experience that effective job training is a must if an efficient
operation is to be maintained. Proper job training means efficiency with safety. Efficiency and
safety get the desired results-quality and production.

(Continued from page 1)
Jobs and his team weren’t afraid to ask questions. They wanted to know why people had to do things like
everyone else did on their phones. Nothing was considered sacred. They dared to question everything and
start from scratch. The product reinvented communication forever.
Someone asked me last month at a convention what the first step should be in reinventing their organization.
Without hesitation I insisted, “Ruthlessly question everything you do… question your habits, question your
procedures, question your routines, question “the rules,” question your products, question your work schedule,
question how you hire, question… everything!”
The greatest innovations in the world have come from people who dared to question everything. I remember a
PBS series, “The Day the Universe Changed,” by James Burke. He demonstrated how people asked questions
about realities and common practices long ago that became the springboards for innovations and inventions…
new ways of viewing (and changing) reality. One of my favorites was how a German farmer noticed how
burning plants left minerals which led him to invent fertilizer. It saved 18th Century Europe from starvation.
Burke called these people “boat rockers.”
Your view of the world will determine how you think about everything. Question the view, and you will run
into opposition. Keep questioning it and if you make sense, you will become either a hero or the villain if you
can’t show a better view.
