To make great progress you don’t have to take big jumps – you take baby steps and keep on taking them. The Japanese call this approach “kaizen,” which means “continual improvement.” Using kaizen, progress or success is achieved through small, consistent steps.

Each of us has “races” we run in our lives, whether those “races” are in school, at home

or at work. Sometimes people around us seem to be going faster than we are and that can be frustrating. But it’s good to remember that slow, steady, consistent steps will help

us cross the finish line!

We hope you enjoy The Tortoise & the Hare!

The Tortoise& the Hare

We are so excited to begin our 20th season with a new show! We love the many messages of The Tortoise & the Hare. Here are some of them:

• We all learn and grow in different ways and at different speeds • Faster is not necessarily better

• Slow and steady can win the race

Kaysy Ostrom (Catfish) is so excited to be back with StoryBook after playing the Wolf in The Boy Who Cried Wolf last season! Other favorite roles include Bree in Fancy Nancy and the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, both at SecondStory Repertory. Kaysy is a graduate of Southern Methodist University where she received a BFA in Theatre Studies with an emphasis in

acting and playwriting. Her plays have been produced in Boise, Dallas, and New York City and her original songs are sprinkled across the internet. When she’s not making theatre you can find her teaching theatre to the next generation of theatre artists at Studio East, Youth Theatre Northwest, Seattle Theatre Group, and ACT Theatre!

Meet these talented actors after the show for autographs & pictures!

Sarah Russell (Tortoise) is excited to be returning to the StoryBook stage as a tortoise. She was last seen with StoryBook as a sheep in The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and as Little Red in Little Red. Favorite past credits include The Odyssey (Seattle Rep), Dreamgirls (Village Theatre), Big Fish (Taproot Theatre) and Grease (5th Avenue Theatre). Next up, you can see her in Howl’s

Moving Castle with Book-It Repertory Theatre this December. When not performing she is a teaching artist and performs with the 90’s R&B coverband DivaTech. Enjoy the show!

Andrew Murray (Hare) just loves StoryBook Theater! Previous favorite roles include: Swindler (The Emperor’s New Clothes), Cow/Giant (Jack & the Beanstalk), Wolf (Little Red), Dorfs/Prince (Snow White), Rag/Prince (Cinderella), and Cocky Locky/Foxy Loxy (Chicken Little). He holds a BA in Drama and Anthropology from the University of Washington and

taught theater at Sweet Pea Preschool for the Arts for 5 years. Thank you so much for joining us, and BIG thanks to Sue, Lani, Liz, my family and D.

Brad Walker (Treefrog) is always pleased to be back with SBT, previously appearing in The Boy Who Cried Wolf, Sleeping Beauty, and Jack and the Beanstalk. Also a director, event entertainer, teaching artist, and a graduate of the University of Washington, Brad has performed on stages all over the Puget Sound. A few favorite shows: Little Shop of Horrors

(Harlequin Productions), A Charlie Brown Christmas (Taproot Theatre), Last Stop on Market Street (Book-It Rep), The Clockwork Professor (PFP), as well as work with Seattle Children’s Theatre and Second Story Rep. For Kaili and Mason.

Deonn Ritchie Hunt (Crow) is excited to be back on stage for StoryBook Theater’s brand new show! She was most recently seen in last season’s A Little Mermaid and The Boy Who Cried Wolf. In addition to performing, Deonn is also a writer, director, teacher, dialect coach and wedding officiant. She can

often be found wandering downtown Seattle as a family tour guide with Seattle by Foot. Deonn would like to thank her family, Mark, Luke and Clara, for putting up with her wacky schedule, helping her learn her lines and being the loudest clappers in the audience. A big thank you to StoryBook Theater for giving her these opportunities to do what she loves to do!

My Favorite Part of The Tortoise & the Hare:

StoryBook Theater is produced by Studio East Training for the Performing Arts, based in Kirkland. In this 2017-18 Season we are thrilled to celebrate two milestones; StoryBook Theater’s 20th year of performing live theater for young children, and Studio East’s 25th year of training young people in the performing arts.

Studio East’s mission is to create opportunities for young people to discover and explore the performing arts. StoryBook Theater serves this mission by introducing over 45,000 patrons each year to live theater for young audiences. We believe that exposing children to the arts at an early age fosters creativity, validates different ways of seeing the world, and demonstrates creative outlets for expressing emotions.

Studio East’s many performing arts training programs – after school and homeschool classes and workshops, productions and classes at area schools, school break and summer camps, and Mainstage productions – focus on nurturing responsibility, creativity, and compassion in the youth of our community. We believe that young people who practice the discipline and dedication required by the art and craft of theater develop life skills that will serve them throughout their lives, no matter what career they pursue.

Happy Anniversary to Us!
