What’s Going on in Haiti?

Sassier School Update After a break for Christmas and Haitian Independence Day (January 1), the students in Sassier returned to School on January 7. The weather has been good, so there haven’t been days lost due to excessive rain and the river flooding that accompanies large rainfall. There is a sense of excitement beginning to develop among the students in the upper grades. This June, College Pierre Toussaint will have its first graduation from 13th Grade. Remember that just 9 years ago, there was no school building for the parish school in Sassier. Now, there are two school buildings with more than 30 classrooms. Then, there were 200 students from Kindergarten to 4th Grade. Now, there are nearly 900 students from Preschool to 13th Grade. As people in Sassier say, “Our dream has become a reality!” We cautioned all the students to re-member that nobody can graduate unless they pass the examinations, so the reality that there is a lot of studying to do before any celebrations is beginning to set it. The Christmas holiday provided us with the opportunity to finish the paint job on the new school building, which is the home to more than 500 students from Preschool to 6th Grade. We think you will agree that it is a very beautiful sight! Water Project You may remember that we have been working on the development of a piped water project that will provide potable (safe) drinking water to about 7000 people throughout the Sassier area. The project got stalled for a few months, due to a changed in administration at the Haitian Government’s national water agency. However, with a little help from some friends, we were able to get the project back on track in the Fall. We just heard that the engi-neering work has been completed. Now we will have to work with the Haitian National Water Agency to arrange funding for the project. We hope to be able to begin the implementation stage of the project by Fall—maybe sooner. Having a safe water supply will engender a huge improvement in the health of people in the Sassier area. Keep praying that we are able to achieve the funding goals and get the project completed in 2013. Shoes for Sassier Once again this year, we are collecting gently-used shoes, sandals, sports shoes, etc. for the people of St Jean Baptiste, our Twin Parish in Sassier, Haiti. In Sassier, many of their parishioners walk up and down the mountains with no shoes or ones that are badly worn. Children come to school barefoot and many people walk more than 2 hours to the nearest market in nothing more than flip-flops, if they have shoes at all. The nurses in the parish’s medical clinic frequently treat infected foot wounds. All kinds of shoes are welcomed, except winter boots--it doesn’t get cold or snow in Sassier. Please drop off your shoes in the SHOES for SASSIER containers in the Gathering Space at Sacred Heart Church or in the Sacred Heart School lobby from February 15 to March 24. Think of all the Happy Feet that will be thanking you when your shoes find new owners in Haiti. Thanks for your great support again this year!!!!!

Annual Catholic Appeal 2013

“Love Never Fails!” 1 Cor 13:8

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you.

Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services.

Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $67,411.00 is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

NOTE: If you wish to donate to the Annual Appeal online, please do so DIRECTLY through the Annual Catholic Appeal website: annnualcatholicappeal.com.

Thank you.

Lenten Regulations

Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all

Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fast-ing is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all

Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted

if necessary to maintain strength according to ones needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.

The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged

for Holy Saturday.

Join us in our Weekly Prayers for Life!

For those in the twilight of their lives, that their families and caregivers will cherish them and care for them with tender compassion, rejecting the path to assisted suicide,

We pray to the Lord!

ASH WEDNESDAY EVENT

Save the date and plan to come/bring your family to our Sacred Heart Ash Wednesday Soup Supper on February 13, 2013 beginning about 7:00 PM (after 6:15 PM Mass) in the Parish Center.

A simple meal of soup made by SH parishioners, and bread, the meal is a great way to practice the Lenten fast and help identify with the hungry. A donation of what you'd be paying for a meal will be accepted and donated to St. Columbanus' Food Pantry. It's also a great way to meet other SH parishioners.

Some do this kind of simple meal at home each week of Lent as a Lenten practice. Mark your calendar and come join us!

Sponsored by the Sacred Heart Religious Education Board

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS

NO Religious Education classes next weekend due to Presidents’ Day holiday.

The Religious Education Board will meet tomorrow evening at 7:00 PM in the school library.

Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday. Plan on coming over to the Parish Center after the evening Mass (about 7:00 PM) for a Soup Supper. Having a simple meal is a long-held Lenten custom, with many families doing this practice weekly at home, putting the money they save from that meal into their Lenten bank. We will have this simple meal, soup and bread, as a parish. Though the meal is free, donations will be accepted for St. Columbanus Soup Kitchen. Our thanks to the members of the Religious Education Board for their soup and hosting this event.

The Confirmation Retreat last Sunday went very well with our 100+ Confirmation candidates participating with Dr. Terry Nelson Johnson facilitating. Our thanks to the committee of room parents who provided lunch and is preparing the large banner with the student’s pictures that will soon be hanging in the back of church: Maria Banuchi Walter, Lisa Centner, Kathleen Clarke, Erin Hines, Margie Huber, Mary Mollman, Lynn Petersen, and Mary Beth Phelps.

We would like to congratulate the Sacred Heart seventh graders for the unbelievable commercials they produced for the Winnetka Public Library Sixth Annual Studio 60093. This was the first year our students as a grade entered the contest. The contest is designed for middle school and high school students to encourage creativity and get involved with library. The commercial categories that were chosen were “Get Fit” and “Library Commercial”. The students worked both at home and at school to complete them by the deadline. The contest had certain technical criteria that the students had to meet in order to enter their video in the contest. A group of Sacred Heart students won the “Get Fit” category with a wonderful commercial. The students’ names are Anabelle Conley, Lauren Henning, Maggie Bourke, Hailey Collins and Hope Harrington. Students and staff are extremely proud of these students for the hard work they put in and for getting involved in the community. Their commercials will now be part of the library archive. The students are very excited to compete in this contest next year!
