A big thank you from the Recreation Department to all for supporting our GA GA GOALS! We have reached our goal to bring the ga ga pit to Bay View! It would have not been possible without the support of many Bay View members, so, a special shout out to all of you who donated and to Patty Zetterberg for her efforts – WAY TO GA GA PATTY!

And while Patty was moving and shaking and donating… The Bay View Open with 56 players raised over four thousand dollars to help us purchase new lifeguard chairs and equipment. WAY TO GA GA BV Open! (Last sum-mer the BV Open provided laptops and printers for Recreation!) We would also like to thank Peter Mogavero and his family for donating the new canvas canopy that will hang over the entrance to the Shirt Shoppe!

Religion and LifeContinued from page 1

Since 1977 the Handbell Choir has performed in John M. Hall to an audience from around the country and including Europe. People travel here to listen to the sound of hand-bells ringing in Bay View. Recently while attending the National Handbell Seminar in Portland, Oregon, Pamela Bayes, former Bay View member and wife of conductor, Carl E. Wiltse, shared that those living in the north-west know about the annual hand-bell choir that entertains in Bay View. Pamela and Carl now reside in Scotland but Pamela hasn’t forgotten her childhood summers in Bay View. She and Carl look forward to their week in August with family and the artistic presentation of the handbell ringers under his direction.

For the past 36 years the Handbell Choir has raised money to support

Music Scholarships for Bay View. The highlight of this week for the handbell choir is in donating all the proceeds from their concert for music scholar-ships. A very generous gift when you think about 36 years of giving back to the Bay View community.

Each year the 100+ handbell musi-cians from across the USA, Canada and Europe are selected to perform in the “Donald E. Allured Bay View Week of Handbells” in August. If you have never attended this festive gath-ering or heard the sweet touch and majestic ringing of the handbells, step into John M. Hall on Thursday eve-ning and let the gentleness of sound stir your emotions.

Enjoy popular songs such as In The Mood and Moonlight Serenade and let the night slip away.

Bay View Briefs...

In recent months there have been several instances of unauthorized tree pruning on Association grounds. Only the Bay View staff has authority to remove and prune trees and shrubs on Bay View common grounds. The common grounds include the right-of –way between the sidewalk and the street. On blocks that do not have sidewalks, the right-of-way is the area from the middle of the street to 31 feet on both sides.

A cottage owner has responsibility for the maintenance of trees on the owner’s designated leasehold. Dead limbs and limbs under 2 inches in diameter may be pruned; however, the limbs from newly planted trees are best left on the tree for several years. This practice enhances trunk development and affords some protec-tion from sunscald that can cause bark splitting on young trees. Trees over 5 inches in diameter as measured at a

point 4 inches above grade, should not be removed without the permission of Superintendent Dave Ellis or his des-ignate. Permission is also required for removal of limbs larger than 2 inches in diameter. To avoid any permanent harm to the tree, one is advised to consult with a certified arborist before embarking on any major tree pruning. The Tree Replacement Committee is developing a list of certified arborists in this area.

Guidelines for Tree Pruning and Removal

In response to Bay View’s updated Strategic Plan the Board of Trustees has created a Technology Committee. At the August 14th Board meeting, Kate Mitchell presented the following charge:

“The Technology Committee shall… develop a robust Technology Strategic Plan… assessing and evalu-ating the needs of all Departments

and Directors… providing a cost and saving analysis from advancing tech-nology.”

“We need volunteers,” Mitchell said, “to serve on this committee that have technology skills and can help evaluate all facets of Bay View that need to be included in a Technology Plan.”
