“None of (the cuts) areviable options to supportteaching, learning and ourfamilies,” Ash said. “But wehave to find the $5 million.”

By state law, the dis-trict’s budget must bepassed by July 1.

One potential cut that isbeing considered as a lastresort is trimming of thehigh school counseling stafffrom four to 2.25 full-timeequivalents.

The Click It or Ticketcampaign, including a clev-erly animated television ad,is running on Fox SportsDetroit and other channelspopular with young menbetween 18 and 34. That’s

the age most likely to notbuckle up, experts say.

“It needs to be drivenhome for young males,”Hall said. “It seems themost effective way is to hitthem in the pocketbook.”

MERIDIAN TWP. – Thepercentage of seatbelt usersis falling in Michigan, according to MeridianTownship Police ChiefDavid Hall said this week.

While 95 percent ofmotorists buckle up, the 2percent drop means some350,000 people are travel-ing without being belted in.

“We recognize we cando better,” Hall said at aMay 23 press conferencemarking the opening of twoweeks of “Click It or Ticket”enforcement in mid-Michi-gan.

“In 2010 350,000 peoplerisked their lives by nottaking a couple of secondsto buckle up.”

Research shows whenseat belts are used prop-erly, the risk of being killedin a crash is reduced bynearly 50 percent.

Although Michigan isamong the top-rated statesin the country in seat beltusage, its use ratedecreased to 95.2 percent

in 2010 compared to an all-time-high rate of 97.9 per-cent in 2009.

According to the Mich-igan State Police CriminalJustice Information Center, more than half the state’spassenger vehicle occu-

pants, or 321 people, whodied last year were unbuck-led.

To help address this dipin belt use, five additionalcounties are taking partin this year’s enforcementeffort.

Safety belt enforcementzones will be set up ran-domly throughout the areauntil Sunday, June 5.

Anyone caught withouta buckled seat belt will beticketed and fined $65. In all, more than 200 law enforce-ment agencies across Mich-igan will be participating.

On the third day of theenforcement campaign, township police issued 21tickets.

Revenue issueAnd while Hall said

many believe ticket writingby police is simply to col-

lect extra revenue, it’s notabout the money.

“We would not be herepromoting this campaign ifit were about extra reve-nue,” he said. “We wouldrather see you drive safe.”

Patrols will be conductedat different times of the day,but especially after dark.Hall said there’s evidenceof seat belt use decliningonce the sun goes down.

“Seat belt use keeps ourfamilies and our communi-ties safe,” he added.

Perhaps not surprisingly,Hall said his departmentmakes many other arrestsas a result of traffic stops, whether it be discoveringan outstanding warrant orcollaring an intoxicateddriver.

“Many of the big thingsthat we do are from trafficstops,” he noted.

My father, JosephT. Waligore, wasawarded the

Legion of Honor Medal onMay 8 in Florida for hisrole in liberating Francefrom the Nazis.

He was drafted to servein World War II. He waspart of six campaigns –five in continental Europe, one in Sicily. Amongthose campaigns were thefight for Normandy and theBattle of the Bulge.

For younger readers, who may not know whatthat means, let me explainit like this: Only 3 percentof his unit survived.

My Dad did not escapeunscathed. He was shottwice. For his bravery, hewas awarded two BronzeStars. For his wounds,a Purple Heart with OakCluster. And on May 8,at the direction of theFrench President, Dad anda dozen of his fellow sol-diers were awarded theLegion of Honor medalfor their role in liberatingFrance from the Nazis.

Although sadly, muchof the history is lost ontoday’s youth, the legacyof those soldiers’ efforts

very much lives on. Ashe pointed out to me,had America not gotteninvolved and had thoseAmerican boys not givenit everything they had,we would all be speakingGerman today.

To say that we owethese men and women a lotdoesn’t begin to do it jus-tice. Our whole way oflife was threatened and inliving up to the exampleof our Founding Founders,a few brave Americansrisked everything and lostmuch.

It is hard to imagine thephysical pain and struggleof years of battle. I thinkthe thing that stuck withme the most is thought ofmy father not seeing his

oldest daughter until shewas 21/2 years old.

It is hard to describe thesum total of what Ameri-ca’s soldiers give up forthis country. It is hard todescribe what their fami-lies give up for this coun-try. But even harder thanthat is to try to put intowords just how much thiscountry means to those sol-diers and their families.

I’m not sure I have thewords. All I can tell you isthat if you meet a man likeJoseph Waligore, shake hishand, and look him in theeye, you know how luckyyou are to live in a countrythat could produce suchdevotion.”

The East Lansing CityCouncil is to becongratulated for sup-porting local elementaryschools. Our council recog-nizes how vitally importantour walk-to, neighborhoodschools are. Ideally, ele-mentary schools can be theepicenters of our neighbor-hoods.

The council correctlymentions that, “There is ademonstrable link betweenquality schools and prop-erty values and we believethat proximity to thoseschools matters.” Amen.

The council also getsthe economics right.Indeed it may have helpedpull the school board backfrom the brink.

Here’s why. The dis-trict’s facilities committeepresented rebuild optionscosting from $54.6 millionto $58.6 million. Eachwould close Glencairn andWhite Hills. And it pre-sented a low budget plan to

remodel all six elementarybuildings for $33 million.

So, the board would askGlencairn and White Hillstaxpayers to maintain theirproperty tax rate (ratherthan let it drop)…but losetheir neighborhood school.

The city council ques-tioned the wisdom of this:“It is our opinion that therenovation option (OptionC in the K-8 Committeereport) needs to be morefully explored.

“In particular, webelieve an analysis of ren-ovations with more thanthe funding outlined in thereport ($33M) should beexplored in detail. In otherwords, what can be done if$45M or even $60M toutedfor new construction wasutilized on renovations?”

For about that muchmoney the committee esti-

mated we could have sixnew buildings at the cur-rent locations.

The administration andboard counter that theclosings are needed to savemoney. But when pressed, they say economics isn’tthe driving factor.

Let’s hope not. The K-8Committee report esti-mates the savings fromconsolidation at as muchas $540,000. One com-mittee member (an MSUeconomist) estimates thesavings closer to $50,000.

The board plans to sellthe Timberlane adminis-tration building, whichbrings in about $158,000 ayear in rental income.

So, if the professor isright, consolidation couldend up costing $100,000 ayear, along with the lossof Glencairn and WhiteHills.

OKEMOS — The 5K4TJRun/Walk to raise moneyfor eating disorder researchand to honor a local wom-an’s son will be held at 10a.m. Saturday, June 4, atKinawa Middle School.

T.J Warschefsky dieddoing sit-.ups in his apart-ment at dental school afterbattling anorexia for 8 1/2years.

He was an outstandingstudent and athlete atOkemos High School, buthis battle with perfection-ism and his desire to havea “six-pack” and muscularbody spiraled out of con-trol.

He went to residentialtreatment centers threetimes for a total of sixmonths, with no success.

Last year because of thisrace, a golf outing andcountless friends donating,an international call wassent out for a $20,000research grant.

Twelve scientists appliedfrom several countries. Dr.

Wade from Australia wasgiven the money to per-form research on the brain, trying to find medication tohelp.

Because of T.J., duringthe past four years, 14people battling this misun-derstood illness, have gonefor treatment and manyfamilies have been sup-ported.

Susan Barry, a retiredteacher from Mason, iswriting a book to tell herson’s story to help preventwhat she and her familyand son had to go through.

Support effortsShe has done several

talks, held a support group, and continues to raiseawareness and knowledgeof this extremely compli-cated illness.

Susan said that she some-times receives two callsa week from frantic par-ents, searching for help, sometimes from folks threehours away

“The networking hasbeen incredible in this com-munity. It’s been amazingto see how many familieshave been helped becauseof someone knowing some-one and then they somehowget my name and number,”she said.

She said she believeshaving anorexia is likebeing bipolar. If you tellsomeone who is bipolar tojust decide to be the happyside of their personality andgive them all the reasonswhy that would be best forthem...it is impossible forthem to do.

T.J.’s dental studentfriends sent his mom a thou-sand dollar check to startan annual 5K4TJ. The thirdannual is coming soon. Reg-ister at playmakers.com —-click on the monthly calen-dar on the left, go to June, click on June 4. Many prizesfor all walkers and runnerswho register and attend.

Based on four unannounced safetyaudits conducted by Ellis & Associ-ates last year, the award puts the EastLansing lifeguard team in the top 30percent of all facilities in the countryas it relates to aquatics safety.

“We are proud of our entire life-guard team for their hard work anddedication to aquatics safety,” saidEast Lansing Department of Parks,Recreation & Arts Director TimothyMcCaffrey. “Ellis & Associates is thepremiere training organization forwater parks, so the fact that they con-sider our team the ‘best of the best’means a great deal to us.”

The city employs 35 leadershipstaff and lifeguards for the summerseason and 15 lifeguards for theoff season. The team provides life-guard services at both the East Lan-sing Family Aquatic Center and EastLansing Hannah Community Center’sindoor pool.

Each member undergoes a rig-orous training regiment, including26-28 hours of initial safety training, followed by weekly trainings in thesummertime and fulfillment of fourin-service hours per month through-out the year.

TrainingSpecific training includes locating

a mannequin on the bottom of the poolwithin 10 seconds, simulating CPRand performing other mock rescueexercises.

Ellis & Associates’ unannouncedaudits take place four times a yearat East Lansing’s aquatics facilities;twice in the summer, once in thefall and once in the spring. Duringan unannounced audit, lifeguards arevideotaped from outside of the aquat-ics facilities, undergo various lifesav-ing emergency scenarios and skillstests and are observed during regu-lar in-service training.

WILLIAMSTON — For most, track and field is considered anindividual sport.

No teammates to depend on andno others to blame.

But the key to the East Lansingboys team’s success — and oneof the reasons for its Division 2regional championship Saturday,May 22 — is that for the Trojans it’sanything but an individual sport.

“We have a sound team becausewe are not just here to win indi-vidual events, we’re always cheer-ing each other on,” senior sprinterand long jumper Tim Kulang said.“Our biggest goal is to win a teamchampionship and nothing less.”

The Trojans won a team cham-pionship, dominating the regionalwith 166 points. Haslett was a dis-tant second with 96.5. The nextstop for the East Lansing boys willbe the Division II State Finals Sat-urday, June 4.

Kulang is a member of all threesprint relay teams for the EastLansing boys.

“We wanted to come out hereand have everyone do well,”Kulang said.

“The weather is good so wewanted everyone to [get personalrecords] today and do better thanwe have all year.”

And the Trojan relay teams didjust that winning all three sprintrelays as well as the 3,200-meterrelay.

However, the relays weren’t theonly places East Lansing demon-strated its strength as a team. TheTrojans had the first- and second-place finishers in both the longjump and the 400-meter dash.

Lawrence Collins and Dan Tylerran sub 50-second races in the 400,putting them among the state’selite. Tyler finished second and

credits much of his success to Col-lins, who beat him by 0.13 sec-onds.

“Being able to compete everyday at practice has been a reallygood for us,” Tyler said. “We’reteammates, so we like to see eachother do well, but there is also thatcompetitiveness in us.”

Gavin Midlam qualified for thestate meet in both the 110- and300-meter hurdles for East Lan-sing and said the team is still get-ting better.

“I think we’re going to peak atthe state meet,” he said. “We’vebeen putting in a lot of work atpractice and doing good, toughworkouts, and it looks like it’s allgoing to come together at the righttime for us.”
