Three Toyota forklift technicians have each won a $2000 skills-development voucher in the annual Toyota Material Handing Australia (TMHA) National Skills Competition.

A Brisbane apprentice forklift technician has

won an educational tour to Toyota’s Takahama forklift manufacturing plant in Japan by taking out the apprentice-technician section.

The four technicians are the latest winners in a national competition that has been held for

more than two decades.

In the skills contest for the fully qualified forklift technicians, the competition identified the top specialists on the three warehouse equipment brands within the Toyota Material Handling

group – BT Lift Truck, Raymond and Toyota Industrial Equipment.

Lochlann Fenton from TMHA Brisbane won the apprentice technician section.

Chris Attard from THMA Sydney won the 2012 Toyota Skills contest, after last year winning the Raymond contest.

Andrew Redmore of Toyota Material Handling (VIC)won the BT Skills contest for the second year in a row.

TMHA Sydney’s Shaun Xerri completed a full set of skills contests, winning the 2012 Raymond Skills Contest after topping the BT contest in 2010 and the Toyota contest in 2011.

Some 200 Toyota forklift technicians and apprentices entered the 2012 National Skills Contest to decide the nine technician finalists and six apprentice finalists. The contest began with two forklift-service tests and culminated in a two-day practical and theoretical-based finale at the company’s Moorebank (Sydney) headquarters.“The contest is designed to keep Toyota forklift technicians at the forefront of industry standards,” TMHA technical advisor/trainer Gerry Larney said.“Toyota has always led the way for forklift technician training in this country – and in fact pioneered specialist TAFE training for

Australia’s forklift technicians,” Mr Larney said.

TMHA chief operating officer Steve Takacs said the aim of the National Skills Contest was to challenge each entrant’s skills and knowledge against their peers and to reward those who reach the pinnacle in their profession.

“This annual contest has special interest for me, because I started in this industry ‘on the tools’ as a technician,” Steve said.

“Today, we see the skills contest as having a direct benefit for our forklift customers, because a high skills standard among our technicians increases both customer satisfaction and workplace safety.”

The 86 GT was also named Best Performance Car under $60,000 and won the People’s Choice vote.

In a first for a petrol-electric hybrid car, Toyota’s Australian-built Camry Hybrid was announced the Best Family Car.

Camry Hybrid and the 86 GT were among just four “stand-out” cars considered in the final judging for the main award.

Drive said the 86 GT has the “perfect

amount” of power to exploit its nimble rear-drive chassis and is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of anyone driving it.

“Judges loved the fact that it hit the brief of being a really fun-to-drive car - and it’s also impressively affordable,” Drive editor and chief judge Toby Hagon said.

“It really is a fantastic little sports car - one that can be fun on the right road, but also make the drive home that little bit more

enticing. “At about $30,000, it is a bargain - a worthy Car of the Year winner for 2012.”

Camry Hybrid was praised for its drivetrain with its 2.5-litre petrol engine and electric motor producing impressive acceleration and real-world fuel economy.

Judges said Toyota has achieved “something special” with the Camry Hybrid and, along with its affordable price, it made a compelling case for families.

“On balance, we believe it is the best family car on the market right now,” the judges said.Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor said the awards for the 86 GT and Camry Hybrid were a great tribute to the passionate people who engineered and produced them.“The 86 was designed for driving enthusiasts to deliver maximum driving pleasure, lively yet accessible performance and highly engaging dynamic abilities - and all at an affordable price,” Mr Callachor said.“It builds on Toyota’s 50-year history of creating exciting, driver-focused sports cars that have proven popular with the public and successful in competition,” he said.Development of the compact four-seat sports

car stemmed from the vision of Toyota’s global president Akio Toyoda to create a more emotional connection between car and driver.

“Mr Toyoda is driving the company to embrace the concept of ‘waku doki’ - designing and engineering cars that really get your heart pumping.”

Mr Callachor paid tribute to Toyota’s development partner, Subaru, saying the collaboration had brought together the technical know-how and shared passion for sports cars of two great companies.

Accepting the Best Family Car trophy for the locally built Camry Hybrid, Mr Callachor said the award was a boost to the local car manufacturing sector, especially to more

than 4,000 Australians employed by Toyota in Australia.

“This award reinforces Toyota’s pride in developing hybrid technology globally and, in particular, bringing hybrid manufacturing to Australia.

“It really is a win-win for motorists: Camry Hybrid is not only a great car to drive with strong performance and on-road dynamics, it also achieves impressive fuel economy and excellent value for money,” he said.

Three other Toyota vehicles were finalists - the Corolla for Best Small Car, the Prius c city car for Green Innovation and the seven-seat Prius v for Best People Mover.

JBS Australia Pty Limited’s Beef City operation 40km west of Toowoomba includes a feedlot, meat processing facilities for 260,000 head per year and a farm.

Established in 1976, Beef City feedlot is one of four JBS feedlots in Australia and one of the largest in the country.

Beef City has a staff of 950 on site with the abattoir, feedlot and JBS Carriers - a trucking division established to transport cattle, containers and hides. At any one time more than 26,000 cattle may be in the feedlot.

JBS, its predecessors and AMH have used Toyota forklifts for nearly two decades.

The new complement of forklifts are all on long-term hire from Toyota Material Handling Australia’s (TMHA’s) Brisbane branch. They include three Toyota internal combustion, one Toyota electric three-wheel forklifts, two Toyota electric reach trucks, two Raymond reach trucks, three BT hand-pallet jacks and six Raymond pallet trucks (both walkie and ride-on).

Nationally, TMHA has more than 200 forklifts in service with JBS Australia, with 18 forklifts being

the largest fleet in a rural location.

Beef City general manager Justin McCormick said the company chose Toyota as the best brand available to suit its business needs.

“They are the best forklifts on the market and the service from Toyota’s Brisbane office has been first class,” he said.

“The relationship with Toyota has grown with support from TMHA Queensland major accounts manager Martin Gross and the Brisbane office being on hand 24/7 when required.

Beef City uses its internal combustion Toyota forklifts for the main yard, rendering section and maintenance lifts.

Four of the battery electric machines are used for cold-room operations and set up to service-racking profiles.

TMHA’s Brisbane branch this year opened new, larger and purpose-built premises close to the Logan Motorway at Larapinta.

It offers the full product range of Toyota forklifts, skid-steer loaders and towing tractors, BT Lift Trucks and Raymond forklifts - providing a one-stop shop for material-handling needs.

Beef City Feedlot is located 40 kilometres west of Toowoomba in the heart of the rich grain growing region of the Darling Downs. It has four steam flaking mills and a modern fleet of paddle mixer trucks to feed the cattle locally produced wheat, barley and sorghum grain and with quality roughages.

The adjacent grain-fed processing plant processes 260,000 head of cattle each year.

The 800 hectare site also includes a farming operation that produces crops such as corn, winter cereals and forage sorghum for either daily supply to the feedlot or as silage or hay.

JBS Australia is a division of JBS, Brazil’s largest multinational in the food sector, and the world’s largest meat company.

JBS Australia has an extensive presence along the eastern seaboard, with operations including 11 meat processing plants and four feedlots.

It has a number of brands that have strong domestic and global recognition, including Beef City Platinum, King Island Beef, Royal, Beef City Black, Your Choice, Tasman Meats and Tasmanian Premium Beef.

Rural Fire service gains lift from Toyota forkliftThe New South Wales Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) has chosen a Toyota forklift for their new regional complex on the North Coast.

The new $3.7 million NSW RFS North Rivers Zone Fire Control Centre Complex at Casino Airport recently acquired a 2.5-tonne payload Toyota 8FD25 forklift.

It is the first time the service has commissioned a forklift truck in the Northern Rivers zone.

The new Toyota forklift provides logistical and aviation support at the Casino Airport facility, including the ability to load bottles of fire-fighting foam. It is also used for pallet racking and storage operations.

National Toyota forklift retailer Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has also supplied a BT SWE120S Walkie Stacker for general use

at the NSW RFS Coffs Harbour Airport facility.

The NSW RFS Northern Rivers zone manager, Michael Brett, said the ability of the forklift to operate on grass as well as hard-stand area was a key reason for selecting the Toyota 8FD25.

“The safety features of the Toyota forklift and the ready availability of service were also important to us,” he said.

“Toyota has a branch and service vans based in Lismore, just 33km or half an hour away by road.”

TMHA’s North Coast manager Andrew Booth said Toyota 8-Series forklifts help get the job

done, regardless of the brief.

“The Toyota 8-Series forklifts offer leading design and safety features, such as Automatic Fork Levelling Control to level forks during loading and Active Control Rear Stabiliser, which locks the rear axle to help reduce the potential of lateral tip-overs,” he said.

The NSW RFS had its beginnings more than 100 years ago in the south-western town of Berrigan, when residents banded together to form the first official fire brigade in the bush.

Today, the NSW RFS is the world’s largest fire service, with more than 2100 rural fire brigades and a total membership of just over 70,000.

analysis, including hundreds of kilometres of road tests that incorporate some of the country’s harshest roads. They are analysed and measured on a range of criteria, including handling, safety, security and value.Toyota’s executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor said success for Camry H is a great boost to the local car manufacturing sector and to more than 4,000 Australians employed by Toyota.“Toyota is proud that it has pioneered hybrid technology globally and, in particular, hybrid manufacturing in Australia,” Mr Callachor said.“Toyota has also invested heavily to provide the required skills, equipment, manufacturing processes and training - all of which has

resulted in the award-winning Camry Hybrid.”Mr Callachor said Camry is the only hybrid vehicle produced in Australia - and it even outsells Prius, the world’s best-selling hybrid, in this market.“This award means that Australia’s motoring clubs recognise that the Camry Hybrid range delivers advances in dynamic performance, refinement and efficiency.“Chief among Camry Hybrid’s strengths is an unrivalled combination of spirited power and seamless acceleration while using substantially less fuel,” he said.Camry Hybrid is powered by Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology, including a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a high-torque electric motor with combined maximum power of 151kW.

Fuel consumption is just 5.2 litres/100km, with carbon-dioxide emissions of 121 grams/km* - figures that are better than many small and compact cars that have considerably smaller and less powerful engines. The Camry H award coincides with Toyota selling more than one million hybrid vehicles globally in 2012 - the first time it has achieved that level of sales in a year.In Australia, sales of Toyota-branded hybrid vehicles have increased more than 50 per cent so far this year. The latest Camry Hybrid was launched in February. The Prius hatch was refreshed about the same time and was followed by the introduction of the Prius c city car and the seven-seat Prius v.

www.toyota.com.au

The most affordable Camry Hybrid, Camry H has been judged 2012 Best Medium Car under $50,000 - winning against 20 other models in a highly competitive market.

The victory is a significant breakthrough for hybrid cars, which deliver substantial power while achieving excellent fuel economy through the combination of a petrol engine and an electric motor.

It is the second major award in a week for the Camry Hybrid range, which was also voted the carsales.com.au People’s Choice Best Green Car for 2012.

Australia’s Best Cars is determined by expert judges from the leading motoring clubs who praised the Toyota’s dynamics, performance, design, fuel efficiency and value.

“In many ways, the new Camry Hybrid is the most rounded, best value vehicle of its type to hit the Australian market,” the judges said.

The award for Camry H is the result of Australia’s most comprehensive and independent consumer-focused vehicle testing and award program.

New Hino helps keep the show on the roadBorn out of hard rock and hard work, Staging Rentals and Construction Services is a unique business, providing stages, drapes and construction to the event and entertainment industry.

Staging Rentals and Construction Services has grown from a small Sydney-based outfit to now also having operations in Brisbane and Melbourne, and the majority of its truck fleet is made up of various Hino models including Dutros, a Ranger, 300 and 500 Series. The company was born out of hard work when founder and director Meri Took began providing staging services to the Sydney pub circuit after learning the ropes as a roadie for legendary Aussie rock band Cold Chisel. Staging Rentals’ truck fleet is a far cry from Took’s original ‘one man and a trailer’

approach. But the hard work element is still very much there.

“The business wouldn’t survive without a dependable truck fleet to move equipment to and from product launches,” says managing director David Comer.

“The fleet are moving our people and equipment to our client’s corporate events, exhibitions, television productions, theatres and fashion shows. We average 10 jobs a day. Just recently we’ve had the NRL grand final, Fashion Week, the Motor Show, you name it.”

Over its 22 years of existence the company has put a lot of work into making performers on stages, and models on catwalks, appear in their best light by providing the staging equipment - something most audiences wouldn’t even think twice about. The latest additions to Staging Rentals’ truck fleet are two new Hinos - a 500 Series Pantech with side-curtains for the bigger jobs, and a 300 Series light-duty truck for smaller loads. These trucks join three Hino Dutros, an older 300 Series model and a Hino Ranger equipped with a crane. While the older Hinos

have covered long distances, they’re still out there doing their job reliably, and they have inspired Staging Rentals to continue its association with the brand.

“We’re running a ‘round the clock business here, and our trucks are used to being loaded to full capacity the whole time,” says sales and operations manager Michael Stokes.

“And the Hinos just do their job. Even though they get used and abused, we’ve never had an issue with them. Their endurance is just great,” he says.

“The creature comforts have improved so

much. The new ISRI driver’s seat just makes driving so much more comfortable. The boys love the entertainment system too, but they shouldn’t have any time for watching DVDs!”

The Hino 500’s ease of driving is appreciated by driver and staging assembler Vojta Parak.

“It’s really just like driving a very big car. The gears shift easily and it’s just so smooth,” he says.

“Our older Hinos are still good to drive and they’re strong and reliable, but I love driving the new ones.”

It’s true that Staging Rentals’ truck fleet has

helped the business come a long way, and with the new 300 and 500 Series Hinos on the fleet, the company is now travelling in absolute comfort.

Hard work is a constant at Staging Rentals. And so are the interesting experiences that can be had when working in the event and entertainment industry.

“The guys get to see some very interesting things out on the road. If only those trucks of ours could talk!” Michael says.

Patane Produce, based at Myalup south of Perth, is a leading supplier of carrots, onions, potatoes and broccoli to the Perth markets, as well as to interstate and overseas markets.

The company commissioned three 1.8-tonne Toyota 8FG18 forklifts at the end of 2011 to increase production and improve the reliability of its material handling fl eet.

Managing director Michael Patane said he bought his fi rst Toyota forklift 15 years ago and that machine, an 7FG18 model, is still in active service after logging an impressive 14,000 hours.

“Toyota forklifts – they just keep working,” he

said. “I’ve come to know the machines well over the years and never had any reliability issues.

“As well as the faithful Toyota 7-Series forklift, we have a second-hand 6Series Toyota forklift that is still performing well.

“At the end of 2011 I bought the three 8FG18 Toyota forklifts to expand production and replace some second-hand machines of another brand, because the maintenance costs were too high.”

Mr Patane said on a typical working day four semi-trailer loads of produce make the 125km trip north from Myalup to Canning

Vale Markets, and the Coles receiving centres in Perth.

Patane Produce’s operation consists of 440ha hectares in the southwest and includes growing areas, administration buildings and several packing complexes.

Toyota Material Handling Perth Branch Area Sales Manager Danny Carbery said Toyota 8Series forklifts offer leading design and safety features, such as Automatic Fork Levelling Control to level forks during loading and Active Control Rear Stabiliser, which locks the rear axle to help reduce the potential of lateral tip-over’s.

At Toyota Material Handling, we place an important emphasis on expert service to keep your forklift working and your servicing costs as low as possible. No matter what forklift brand you use, Toyota Material Handling’s factory trained technicians use the latest diagnostic equipment to ensure a fast and accurate

Engineering the perfect blend of quality, performance and reliability was the driving force behind the 5SDK range of Toyota Huski skid steer loaders. Developed and tested in Australia, the Huski 5SDK features exceptional strength, manoeuvrability, and driver comfort, all backed by Toyota’s trusted reputation for delivering quality equipment and professional after sales support. Available in operating loads from 320kg – 900kg, you can be assured that there’s a Huski model guaranteed to put you at the head of the pack.

Giving our Aussie earth a shift in the right direction.Laurie Kirby, of Wandin North-based Laurie Kirby Cartage and Mudbusters Pty Ltd, bought his fi rst Toyota skid-steer in 1984 and has bought Toyota Huskis ever since.

Laurie’s latest purchase, a Toyota Huski 5SDK-8, is fi ve weeks old and has been signwritten “Last One?” in expectation he’ll retire in the next few years.

His 28 years of Toyota skid-steer ownership means he has seen the Victorian industrial equipment dealership evolve through two previous owners to the current 100 per cent factory-owned Toyota Material Handling (VIC) which is based in Dandenong, Victoria.

Laurie Kirby said he continued to buy Toyota Huskis based on proven performance and

reliability. “I’ve driven trucks and earthmoving machines my whole working life,” he said.

“The early brochures for the Toyota Huski skid-steer loader said they had extra power when you really needed it, and that has always been the case.

“They are good machines; they are so reliable.

“And if you look after a Huski, you never have trouble selling them for a good price.

“I’ve kept each one of mine for an average of four-and-a-half years,” he said.

TMH (VIC) skid steer sales manager Scott Bocksette said Laurie Kirby takes added pride in maintaining his trucks, trailers and equipment; so much so that his truck and trailer combination look like they are

showpieces - not workhorses.

“He refurbishes his old equipment to as-new condition and always gets a much better return on his investment for resale,” he said.

The 650kg operating load Toyota Huski 5SDK-8 is one of six Huski skid-steer loader models offered nationally by Toyota Material Handling. Models range from the compact 4SDK4 right up to the 900kg operating load 5SDK11.

The Huski 5SDK8 has a spacious cabin opening for smooth entry and exit, along with an easy-to-read instrument panel and low vibration and low fatigue control levers, providing outstanding operator comfort.

It has class-leading visibility and outstanding manoeuvrability.
