Charity DUCK race returns! – 12th March 2017
The Annual Durham Duck Race, organised by Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK).
Ten thousand rubber ducks will be tipped into the River Wear from the bridge above and the race
finishes downstream at Kingsgate Bridge
This event is one of both the committee's and the university's biggest fundraising events of the year and
will be raising funds for DUCK's Local Charities' Fund and Veterans At Ease. Veterans At Ease is a
voluntary group from Durham City which works in the community to help veterans overcome the traumas
of war after serving their country.
On the day itself the university, and our officiator the mayor, will be tipping 10,000 rubber ducks into
the River Wear. Each duck will have been sold for £1.00 and will have an identifying number on it. The
first duck to cross the finish line at Kingsgate Bridge will win and be awarded a prize.
While in previous years the DUCK race has been mostly targeted at university students, this year they
are hoping to get more local schools and youth groups involved as well, and have tailored some of our
prizes to this group. Prizes this year include ‘Go Ape’ vouchers, a family ticket to Kirkley Zoo, a family
season ticket to Crook Hall and Gardens, a family pass for 4 for Adventure Valley, a Durham Climbing
Centre induction pass, and vouchers for Infinite Air; prizes the whole family can enjoy. It promises to be
a very fun and enjoyable day out for families, and is completely free to attend!
Three university students visited Durham Trinity Primary and Secondary assembly this week to share
information about this event and left some DUCK race tickets at Reception. If you would like to buy a
ticket for a duck, for the race please write in your child’s home-school diary with £1. Durham Trinity
School have previously received funding from this charity so we are very happy to support this event.
This is a project involving European schools working together.
The current project is ‘Are You Ready for Life and Work?’ Please see additional
newsletter attached.
Part of the current project is creating an international cookbook. If you would like to
contribute to the cookbook with your favourite recipes please send them to Ms Madden
(KS2) and photos of some delicious food would be welcome with the recipes too!

The “Are You Ready for Life and Work” partnership consists of schools from Estonia,
Portugal, Latvia, Romania and the UK whose sole aim is to enhance the lives of those
citizens with special needs. We hope you enjoy finding out about the activities each
institution has been paricipating in as part of the project.
Voru Jave Kool Estonia Preparations for Christmas Market. As part of one of Erasmus+ activities, we decided to arrange a Christmas Market at our school. We donate the profit to charity. The preparations started already in the autumn. In September, all of the students went mushrooming in the forest. Different preserves were canned from those mushrooms. Besides wild mushrooms, fruits and vegetables from the garden were preserved as well. Christmas Market takes place on December 16th at Võru Järve School. We expect guests from neighbourhood organisations and Võru Town Government.
Durham Trinity School and Sports College UK. Our Christmas Fayre
Each year our Post 16 pupils organise a Christmas Fayre to raise money for
charity. This year our Fayre formed part of our Erasmus+ project. We
created a range of different crafts to sell including homemade wrapping
paper, candle holders and personalised mugs. Parents, friends and pupils
visited our fayre and we made a fantastic £620. Our students have identified
the charities to donate the money to: Heel and Toe, Trinity Scouts, Trinity
School and Hug in a Bag.

Social Inclusion through our Erasmus+ Project
Last week, a group of 20 students from our school went to a
church in our town where they advertised our project and sold
small Christmas Ornaments they’ve made in school.
People were impressed by their presence and products and
asked many questions about the project. Some money was
raised (the impressive amount of 1500 RON, approx. 300
euros).
Riga Special Primary Boarding

We continue cooperation with the company “Juglas paper”
Company “Juglas paper” collects and recycles paper. We have collected and
handed over already 720 kg of paper. For this we have received 17 parcels
A4 paper and in this way students learn to treat the environment and save it.
Career days
For the third year in Latvia, in autumn is held a career week events. Career
week in our school is very busy, students learn about different careers and
locations. Students get acquainted with different professions in career days,
going on excursion to working places, discuss, play games, etc.
We visited the Ministry of defence
We visited a ministry of defence on open
door day, made a picture with minister of
defence Raimonds Bergmanis. Students had the chance to
meet soldiers and see the military equipment.
