The Meaning of Life

From the Desk of Nina Wason

Has anyone every stopped you on the street and asked: what must I do to inherit eternal life? Me either. But.

One of my daughters, from a very young age, would call me into her room at night and say, “Mom, why did God

even make us? What are we here for?”

The fellow in this week’s gospel interrupts Jesus on his journey to ask about achieving eternal life – how can he

achieve it? Clearly, he is dead serious about getting an answer. At least, why else would he run up to a perfect

stranger and get on his knees on the dusty road in front of the man, unless the issue was of great importance? Not

many people go around asking that exact question these days, but I suspect it has just taken on a different shape, the

shape of meaning or purpose. What are we here for? What’s the point? Aren’t we all hoping to live a meaningful

life…one which reaches beyond our personal successes and touches other lives in ways that are good and true and

lasting? What’s it all about, Jesus? What is the meaning of my life? Why did you even make me?”

Such big questions. I imagine we all come around to them over and over again, though maybe not in the deepest,

final sense, with those precise words. Maybe it starts with the small stuff.

I find myself asking about little things that will one day fill the whole picture of my life. Why do I spend free time

the way I do? What do I do with loose change or fun money? What relationships am I killing by neglect? Which

ones am I working really hard at sustaining? What am I tired from at the end of the day and is it a good kind of

tired? Where have I loved in a way that was costly to me and not just warm and fuzzy? What kind of review of the

day can I give to God? And aren’t there questions to ask each other, for the answers involve us as a community or

family? Can we say, as Peter does in this text: “Lord, we have left everything and followed you.”?

There are not always easy or even any answers to these questions, but asking them is a necessary first step. In the

words of German poet Rainer Marie Rilke (1875-1926):

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms

and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given

you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Per-

haps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

Dinners on Us

Dinners’ on Us was created to coordinate the delivery of meals to members in need whether due to

tragic circumstances - such as death or illness - or happy but hectic times as when a new baby is born. It is

meant to make life easier for the dinner recipients by supplying an answer to the age-old question “What’s

for dinner?”

Through the use of the website, “TakeThemAMeal.com”, the meal coordinator sends out an email to

allow the meal providers to sign up for the day(s) when they will provide meals to the recipients. Any

allergies or strong food dislikes are noted in the email. To prevent meal repetition, volunteer providers are

prompted to list what meal will be supplied. (The site also allows “TBD” or “to be determined” to be

listed.) If a volunteer provider does not use email, he/she can request a call about meal openings.

There is no requirement for volunteers to provide a certain number of meals each month as everyone

has different and often hectic schedules. For those who do not like to cook, a gift card to a restaurant or

carry-out is always welcomed.

Please contact Jenny Anderson via email ([email protected]), text (610-304-1705) or call if you are

interested in volunteering or finding out more information.

Habitat Update

Because of permit issues, work has yet to begin on the Bridgeport build. Our fall work dates have been

postponed. Please watch the Trumpet for more information on dates coming up early in the new year!

Thanks for your patience.

What You Always Wanted to Know About TLC

TLC is Trinity’s home visitation ministry. In the healthcare world, TLC means Tender Loving Care. It

also stands for Trinity Lutheran Church. When the newly formed home visitation team needed to decide on a

name for itself, TLC fit the bill. We are a group of Trinity volunteers that call ahead to schedule a visit to stay in

touch with members who cannot come to church or who need extra support when experiencing frailty in old age,

grief over the loss of a loved one, chronic or serious illness or other life crises. Team members are trained to

administer the sacrament of Holy Communion to those baptized Christians visited, using portable sets provided

by Trinity. It is an important part of this ministry to let inactive or homebound members (often elderly) know,

through personal contact and by providing Communion, that Trinity has not forgotten them.

Some care-receivers may prefer to have only the Pastor tend to their spiritual needs and, of course, this

request is honored. Others may not want a home visit so the TLC team member “assigned” to that person will

call, send a note or an email to stay in touch.

TLC supplements the Pastor’s visits. If a team member notes a problem that appears to require more help

than a lay person can provide, he/she will notify the Pastor. In other words, team members can operate as

additional “ears and eyes” for the Pastor.

Finally, in order to give the Pastor a small amount of personal time, a TLC team member is on-call on

Pastor’s days off (Friday and Saturday) or when the Pastor is away. A Pastor is ALWAYS available; the TLC

team member serves as a front line person to respond immediately and contact Pastor as needed or to make a visit

for her.

Often the people of Trinity endure surgeries without letting anyone know until after the fact, and can be

shy in asking for care. Maybe they don’t want to bother the Pastor and don’t know that there is a whole team of

Trinity people who help with home visits.

If you or someone you know at Trinity has a pastoral need, please call the Church Office Manager, Kim

Travetti, during regular office hours, fill out a welcome mat for prayer request located under each church chair,

contact a members of the TLC Team, or notify the Pastor directly. After hours please contact the TLC person on

call. Names and contact information are announced each week in the Trinity Trumpet. Additional interested

volunteers welcomed.

TLC, because Trinity Lutheran Church provides Tender Loving Care to all our congregants in need.
