Introduction: Thank you very much for buying this

publication. A percentage of the sale of this book goes to

non-profit charities. One charity is the Make-A-Wish

Foundation and the other is March of Dimes. Both of these

charities help children.

It is my hope that you will find it very helpful in your

enjoyment of the sport of fishing. Some of the ingredients

found in the recipes might seem unusual and/or you might

not readily know how to obtain some ingredients. You may

find particular information such as description or place of

purchase from the Internet.

Please note that although these recipes have been tested

and have been found successful, they may not work all the

time in all conditions. This is what makes this sport

exciting. Take several baits with you on excursions

including your tried and true baits you have used in the

past.

If you have any comments, feedback, suggestions, I would be

very much interested. Please email me at

[email protected]

Also, I am currently writing another updated edition of The

Trout Bait Recipe Book. If you would like to submit “your”

recipe, please email or snail mail me for inclusion in the

next book. (Please go to end of book for form and other

participation programs)

If you would like to be notified as to when the next

edition is finished, please email or snail me your name,

address, and email.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Darren Takenaga, 2009

Al’s Secret Home Made Killer Trout Bait Concoction

Heat up a non-stick sauce pan on low- medium heat.

1. Start with one jar of power bait, broken in small

pieces. Any color or flavor you like. One and one half

times the amount of Velveeta and 20 white mini

marshmallows. Place in the pan and melt them together. The

mixture gives you the integrity and semi-flotation of power

bait, while milking into the water like Velveeta. Then put

in a full jar of Salmon eggs into the mix and smash them up

in to the mixture. Add one teaspoon of pancake syrup. Mix a

tablespoon of your favorite bait scent in. I use anise

extract or garlic oil.

2. Let the concoction cool, and then knead like dough.

3. Containerize and refrigerate until used.

When fishing the bait, roll a small bait sized ball in your

hands, slide some bait scent up your leader above the

treble hook. Place the bait ball on your leader and slide

it down on to the treble hook, then shape it around the

hook. Use a 3’- 4’ bait leader. Use any type of sinker

arrangement you like. If you would like to float the bait

off the bottom, use a toothpick inserted in a corky on your

leader about 12” above the bait. Break off the extra

exposed toothpick. This will keep the bait off the bottom

and make the bait more visible to the fish.

A can’t go wrong bait for planted Trout in ANY lake in the

country.

Jim Fryer’s Top Rate Trout Dough Bait

1 cup white flour

Page 4: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

4

1 cup yellow cornmeal

Half cup of white granulated sugar

2 cups of water

1 tablespoon of garlic powder

Quarter pound of processed cheese (Velveeta brand highly

recommended)

Jim says to melt the cheese in a microwave. Take melted

cheese and mix with all other ingredients until a heavy

dough like consistency is formed. After consistency is

obtained, pinch off some of the dough and roll into ball.

(about 1” in diameter) Do this until all the dough is used

and you have a batch of dough balls.

Boil water in pot on high heat or flame. After rapid boil,

drop some of the dough balls into the boiling water and

cook for 1 or 2 minutes. Place on paper towels to soak off

excess water.

Tip: Use trout dough on treble hook with bobber setup.

Terry Cumming’s Heirloom Trout Bait

1 package of uncooked brown and serve rolls

1 stick of cream cheese

3 strips of bacon - need the grease

Assortment of food coloring

Instructions. Take 4-6 uncooked brown and serve rolls and

mix with stick of cream cheese until dough like consistency

is formed. Cook the bacon and save the grease. Let grease

cool until it can be safely handled. Thoroughly mix the

grease into the dough ball.

Add one food coloring into the dough ball. (Try separating

pieces of the dough ball and add a color of food coloring

for each dough ball. For example, I often use red food

coloring for one dough ball. Then I use yellow food

coloring for another dough ball, etc.) Place in

refrigerator overnight until firm.

Bait Recipe to Catch the Trout Without a Doubt

Page 5: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

5

Ingredients:

Vegetable Margarine

Loaf of White Bread

Whipping Cream (Miracle Whip)

Garlic Powder

Take loaf of bread and break into pieces. (start with

enough slices that you will use in one fishing outing) Add

pieces into mixing bowl. Knead the bread pieces. It will be

dry of course. While kneading, add equal amounts of

whipping cream and margarine. Knead until dough like

consistency if obtained.

Then add the garlic powder. The amount is dependent on how

many slices of bread you use. There is no exact science to

this. However, I use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder for every

4 slices of bread.

Jon’s Trout Bait

The other one that landed me a 2 plus pounder last wk when

nothing was working for anyone was uncooked brown and serve

rolls mixed with Velveeta cheese. You can use store brand I

really don’t think it matters a lot.

Take 2 or 3 uncooked brown and serve rolls like Pillsbury

or store brand and knead in small amounts of the cheese to

get a light yellow color. It helps if the ingredients are

at room temp. After it is well mixed I minced several

cloves or garlic into the mixture juice and particles of

minced cloves of garlic.

Place a very small amount or a treble hook once again # 16

to 18 just enough to cover the hook so it looks like a very

small ball floating innocently down the stream. Be sure to

place a very small split shot bb size or smaller 18 to 20

inches above the hook with a float above that. I’m sure you

could use anise or garlic powder oil to season it.

I have a couple more recipes although the last time I tried

to make the one it was too runny so I will omit that one

until I can get it right.. tell your readers that with any

of these flour can be added to desired firmness although it

should work fine if mixed correctly..

Page 6: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

6

It is always important for your reader to write down the

EXACT measurements when making a bait so that if one really

works they will know exactly how to duplicate it.. Another

trout hint, my dad was an avid trout fisherman and caught

lots of fish when no one else was catching them the secret

you want to know??

He went to the extra trouble to change different color

flies.. Trout are very peculiar and respond to a variety of

baits and colors. I have a very large and expensive

assortments of store bought power baits and eggs. My home

made baits out perform them and very often on the first

cast!!!!!

___________________________________________________________

Jon’s Trout Bait #2

Here are a couple of recipes used here in mo. that are

proven.. We have several really beautiful trout parks with

springs that they manage and stock rainbow and brown trout

in. some produce as much as a million gallons of water

every minute providing several fishing areas along the

streams.

They zone differently for flies, artificial, and natural

baits. I used to fly fish a lot but mostly fish with my

wife in the bait zones. Most of the water we fish in moving

an so we cast up and present to baits to look naturally to

the finicky trout.

I usually use 4 pound line with 2 lb leader, split shot, #

16 or 18 treble hook.

I have a trout float or small bobber 2 to 4 ft above to

produce a natural flow with the water. Other times I use

very small jigs usually 1/100 in wt. and press the dough

bait firmly on to it.

One recipe that is truly remarkable is take 5 to 6 slices

of white bread and cut the crust off and bake in the oven

slowly on 250 degrees F. Cook until very hard careful not

to burn it.

When it is very hard and dry crush it up and use a screen

to finely further it into almost a powder, then place in a

bowl and add slowly 2 tablespoons of baking powder and 8 oz

(one pack) of cream cheese.

Page 7: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

7

Work into a ball very well until all is consistent like

play dough, (I bet you hear that a lot) You can squeeze

garlic cloves and mix with it or garlic powder, garlic oil

or anise. I have had better success with garlic.

Then place in the fridge to harden. I put some in a zip

lock bag and keep in the cooler when I fish. Break off a

very small piece and firm over the hook or better yet a jig

head and hold on!!!!

Believe it or Don’t

Pubic Hair?

This is weird. But hey! Who knows? Word has it that a

great booster for home made baits is adding minced pubic

hair to the bait balls.

Why? Because there are pheromones in the hair and it

drives the fish crazy.

Not just any pubic hair will do. Male human hair turns

fish off. (yes, even in the fishing world) It needs to be

from a human female.

I’m just providing the information. It is up to you and

your creative thinking to obtain the hair.

Good luck.

Page 9: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

9

Believe it or Don’t – The importance of water?

I don’t know where you live but your water may be the

reason you are not catching the big ones. (or little ones)

As you may have noticed, 99% of these recipes require the

use of water. If you use your tap water, it may be filled

with metals, fluoride, and other stuff that actually may

repel the fish! (and not so good for us humans)

I suppose with this thinking, you might want to use the

cleanest and purest water available. Maybe boiling the

water will eliminate the bad stuff. (in this case, the

repellents be it metal, smells, or taste)

Just keep this in mind when you are making any carp bait.

Here’s a cool tip. If you can, try substituting the

ingredient water with the actual water that you will be

fishing at.

Better yet, if possible, try to make the bait at the

fishing hole so that the lake/river water is readily

available.

Obviously, this will not work out for recipes calling for

the bait being refrigerated overnight. (Unless you are

camping)

Use your imagination.

Home Cooking Trout Dough Bait Recipe

I have the ultimate trout bait that will work ALL day long.

First, get a bag of hatchery food from whatever hatchery is

near you. Get yourself some flour and HOT (to the point of

boiling) water and some heavy duty 1 gallon plastic zip

lock freezer bags. Put the hatchery food in the bag and

slowly add water just a little at a time, kneading it like

bread dough until the fish food dissolves mostly to a wet

powder form -- not too wet and not too dry.

Next slowly add little amounts of flour and knead like

bread dough just until it's to the point of sticking

together and falling apart at same time.

To fish this bait, press it onto size 8 strait bait hook

and make it flat to resemble a spinner. This does two

things: it makes the bait float slower down to the bottom,

and it makes a cloud of bait as it goes down (which is why

you want it to stick together but also to fall apart). Its

killer if more than one person uses it in the same fishing

hole.

Now occasionally lift your rod tip up and down, and reel

the bait in very slowly. Since the bait is flat, it should

spin on the way back to you, making the fish look at it

even more.

___________________________________________________________

Special Bonus Secret Bait

This is a ”natural” bait for catching trout and catfish.

Believe it or not, ant eggs make great bait. The most

popular ant eggs come from red or black ants. You need to

find the type of ants of the bigger variety because you

need at least eggs that are ¼” long so that they stay on

the hook.

You can put several eggs on a No. 8 or 10 baitholder hook.

When fishing for trout or catfish or carp, use a sliding

sinker rig with a small marshmallow slid on the hook and up

onto the leader before baiting up. This floats the bait

off the bottom a little. Use a leader of about 18 inches

for trout. Catfish leader about 10 to 12 inches.

Page 14: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

14

Gathering the eggs. Find anthills/nests and gather up

handfuls of ants, eggs, etc and put into a paper bag.

(wear rubber gloves to avoid getting bitten and leave some

eggs so that you can come back in the future to gather more

eggs)

Take an aquarium or big box or similar and place in

sunlight. Cover half the box so that there is half

sunlight and half shade in the bottom. Place cardboard at

the bottom (shaded area)

Place the ants, eggs, debris in the sun side bottom. Soon

the ants will carry the eggs to the shaded side. After

awhile you can take the cardboard and scoop the eggs up.

You can freeze a years supply so that you don’t have to go

egg hunting on every fishing trip.

Important: you must place the eggs in a cardboard container

for freezing because the eggs will sweat if placed in

glass, plastic, or metal – thus ruining the effectiveness

of the eggs. Cardboard containers that hold oatmeal

suffice.

"Tsk Tsk!" said Clark to himself. "What a sad sight. That poor old man is fishing over a bed of flowers. I'll see if I can help." So he walked up to the old man and asked, "What are you doing, my friend?" "Fishing, sir." "Fishing, well how would you like to come have a drink with me?" The old man stood put his rod away and followed the kind stranger to the corner bar. He ordered a large glass of Whiskey, snacks and a fine cigar. Clark felt good about helping the old man, and he asked, "Tell me, old friend, how many did you catch today?" The old fellow took a long drag on the cigar, blew a careful smoke ring and replied, "You are the fifth today, sir!" *********************** Fishing Dictionary Terms and Definitions ***********************

marshmallows. Place in the pan and melt them together. The mixture gives you the integrity and semi-flotation of power bait, while milking into the water like Velveeta. Then put in a full jar of Salmon eggs into the mix and smash them up in to the mixture. Add one teaspoon of pancake syrup. Mix a tablespoon of your favorite bait scent in. I use anise extract or garlic oil. 2. Let the concoction cool, and then knead like dough. 3. Containerize and refrigerate until used. When fishing the bait, roll a small bait sized ball in your hands, slide some bait scent up your leader above the treble hook. Place the bait ball on your leader and slide it down on to the treble hook, then shape it around the hook. Use a 3’- 4’ bait leader. Use any type of sinker arrangement you like. If you would like to float the bait off the bottom, use a toothpick inserted in a corky on your leader about 12‖ above the bait. Break off the extra exposed toothpick. ************************ One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish. About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family. "You aren't going to catch many fish that way," said the businessman to the fisherman, "you should be working rather than lying on the beach!" The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, "And what will my reward be?" "Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!" was the businessman's answer. "And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, "You will make money and you'll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!" "And then what will my reward be?" asked the fisherman again. The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman's questions. "You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!" he said. "And then what will my reward be?" repeated the fisherman. The businessman was getting angry. "Don't you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!" Once again the fisherman asked, "And then what will my reward be?" The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, "Don't you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won't have a care in the world!" The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, "And what do you think I'm doing right now?"

By Niall Cinneide There are many recipes that you can take full advantage of to help you to score the big fish. Why not make the bait at home on your own? Here are just a couple of the options that you have in fish bait recipes.

Salmon Eggs: How To Cure Them There are several fish that this will work well for. If you are after largemouth bass, salmon, lake trout or muskellunge, you’ll love to use these because they will give you good results. Here’s a step by step to help you. - When cleaning your salmon, keep the egg sacs intact. - Cover a large flat surface that you can easily move with borax. - Cut the egg sacs across the membrane about three to four inches and lay them at least one inch apart on the borax. - Sprinkle more borax on top and make sure they are all covered. - Move them to an area with good circulation that is also sheltered. You do not want them in any sunlight or in any way getting wet. - Allow them to dry for two or three days and turn them about every twelve hours. - Shake off the excess borax and place them in plastic bags for storage. You can use them when they are completely dry. Or How About Some Cheese Bait? You can use this type of homemade bait to catch carp, chub, bream and catfish. Here’s what you need to do. - Roll out about ten ounces of pie pastry on your counter top. - Use mature cheddar flavor cheese to smear on the pastry. - Add six ounces of grated cheddar cheese and four ounces of blue cheese crumbles that are finely ground. - Fold that pastry over so that it is completely covering the cheese. Then, roll it out again. - Do this several times until the pastry and the cheese are completely combined. - Form into a large ball and knead it. - Place some cheddar cheese bits into the bottom of a plastic bag then place the cheese ball into it as well. Freeze it.

- Once thawed the consistency is perfect and it will have a good cheese smell to it. Roll it into small balls and store in an air tight container. You can then use them next time you head out. Who said you couldn’t make your own great baits for your favorite catch? This is a great way to get some of the best baits for next to nothing as well. Go ahead and give it a try. You would be surprised how well these work. Niall is a keen fisherman always looking at new tools to help him catch more fish. After arriving at the lake early in the morning, they cut two holes in the lake and drop their lines in the water. After fishing for a few hours, Angler Jim has caught dozens of fish while Fishing Frank hasn't even gotten a bite. Frank asks, "Jim, what's your secret?" Angler Jim answers, "Mmu motta meep da mmrms mmrm." Fishing Frank asks, "What did you say?" Angler Jim answers, "Mmu motta meep da mmrms mmrm." Fishing Frank again asks, "What?" ********************* Fish Bait Recipe ********************* A real simple but effective Carp Bait Recipe You will want to make this recipe at your favorite fishing hole so that it is fresh. Bring along a plastic bowl to mix ingredients. 1 or 2 boxes of strawberry or cherry flavored gelatin mix Box of corn flakes cereal Pour the corn flakes into the plastic bowl…..crush the flakes into fine crumbs Add the gelatin mix. Slowly add water until mixture is a doughy mass. (enough to stay on hook) Brings in the large Carps! Have fun! ********************* Featured Article ********************* Make Your Own Fish Bait with Common Household Ingredients By: Darren Takenaga If you would like to increase the chance of catching more fish in your next excursion, you might want to consider making your own fish bait. Why? If you look at the store bought baits, there are only a few brands. Imagine going to your favorite fishing hole and the majority of the baits cast into the water are from the same company. The fish won’t have much of a choice but being attracted to the same store bought bait. Now imagine if you brought along fish bait that you made yourself. Your bait will stick out like a sore thumb from the other baits and the fish will seek you out. Making your own fish bait is not only easy, it is fun and cheap. You can make the bait with your children and share the fun the next day catching fish knowing that you made the bait yourself. You can make pounds of bait for literally pennies and keep the unused portion in the freezer for months. There is going to be some experimentation on your part. However, I have included the more popular ingredients and descriptions found in homemade baits. When you are making your bait, make sure to write everything down because if you fill your stringer full of fish, you want to be able to duplicate the winning formula.

Page 42: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

42

Most of the following ingredients can be found at a well stocked grocer and feel free to experiment with other ingredients not listed below. Also, these ingredients are commonly found in trout baits so I would like to advise you that you will probably have more success utilizing these ingredients for catching trout. Also, this list is not the end all be all of ingredients. Do not use all the ingredients listed below in one formula. For example, there are 2 food colorings listed. Use only one of the two when developing a formula because if you used both colorings listed, you will get a different color. Use only 3 or 4 and then test. Add more ingredients to test for effectiveness. 1) Uncooked oatmeal – popular as a base (keeps all the ingredients together in a doughy mixture) 2) White bread – also popular as a base 3) Water – required in most cases to help make the mixture workable 4) Garlic salt – found in most store bought baits (probably a good idea if you used it also) 5) Garlic powder – similar to salt but may alter the fish attractant properties 6) Mini marshmallows – also found in store bought baits (helpful for flotation purposes) 7) Can of tuna – found in many homemade bait recipes. Maybe the old timers know something. 8) Anise oil extract – almost a requirement for trout bait 9) Red food coloring – it seems color attracts along with smell and taste 10) Yellow food coloring – same 11) Cheese – I’ve seen recipes with American and especially Velveeta cheese 12) Ziploc bags – great for mixing your ingredients, storage, and taking to fishing hole. I hope this information gives you a great head start in developing your own homemade secret fish bait. Just remember to have fun. ************************** Proverb/Quote

A dedicated ebook with catfish bait recipes is sold on the site. It is now online. ********************* Fish Bait Recipe ********************* Here is the latest issue of Fish Bait Formulas. Trout bait: Ingredients 3.5 cups of water 1.5 cups of white flour .5 cups sugar 1 cup oatmeal half box of kraft velveeta cheese Directions: boil the water…..add ingredients except for cheese. Let mixture cool and store in refrigerator. At fishing hole, mix in the velveeta cheese. If lines are slow, add more cheese to mixture. Treble hook works best to hold bait. ******************** Question and Answer ******************** In the past, I have had questions about keeping homemade baits on the hook. I realize that it is sometimes a challenge to mix the bait in the right consistency. Sometimes temperature can cause havoc on a batch of bait. (i.e. a hot summer sun) Subscriber Horace wrote in with a viable solution.

Page 47: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

47

Darren, I don't have a fish bait recipe but I do have a tip. It has helped me keep bait on my hooks longer and better. You just need an old pair of panty hose or cheese clothe (panty hose is better) as far as I'm concerned. Cut a square an inch to 1 1/2 inches, place a small amount of your bait in the center of the square. Then fold edges around the bait and place on hook so the folds don't come open. It will help keep bait from washing away and lasts for a long time if the fish you catch don't tear it up. Keep several pieces in your tackle box. You will be amazed at the way it works. Especially for Pan fish and Catfish. Horace Thank Horace. I’m sure many of readers will be raiding their wife’s drawers for the panty hose. In a future issue, I’ll give my feedback on this method. Thanks again. ********************* Featured Article ********************* How to Make Your Own Homemade Catfish Bait By Darren Takenaga Have you ever been fishing and witnessed someone catching all the fish? I have many times. When I see someone hauling in stringers full of fish I get very curious. On occasion, I have asked about their secret techniques pertaining to equipment and bait. A lot of times I will get the polite smile and response such as ―just lucky today‖ or ―you know…same ol’ stuff.‖ I’ll ask what type of bait and that is usually when I will get the silent treatment. The typical response, ―sorry, secret family recipe‖ or ―if I tell you, I’ll have to kill you.‖ Through the years, I have collected some very useful information concerning fishing baits. The most important realization was that the people who were catching the most fish were not using store bought baits. It seems that they made their own baits. Some anglers in the past divulged some secrets pertaining to their baits. I thank them for it. I have developed my own formulas but this is not the time or place to reveal them. However, I have compiled the main ingredients found in the most potent catfish bait formulas. I want to encourage you to develop your own formulas based on these ingredients found below. You will notice that these ingredients are easy to find. You can find the majority of the supplies at a well stocked grocer.

Page 48: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

48

When developing your own formulas, do not use all the ingredients listed. Just take three or four items and see what happens. You are not bound to the items listed below. Feel free to test others. I have found the most important aspect of making your own bait is testing. You will need to test your homemade bait several times because maybe a certain day, the fish aren’t biting, or there are no fish, or some other variable that has nothing to do with the potency of the bait. Bring several batches of your baits on your fishing outing and test several to increase your chances of success. Another tip is to write everything down. You don’t want to develop bait and find that it is successful only to realize that you forgot how to make it. Also, you can make batches of bait for literally pennies a pound. You may store the batches in zipper plastic bags in the freezer. Since these ingredients are for developing catfish bait, I will warn you ahead of time to do your experimenting in the garage or outdoors because some of the ingredients have a pungent smell and some create a mess. 1) Uncooked oatmeal – popular as a base (keeps all the ingredients together in a doughy mixture) 2) Baking flour – another popular base 3) Corn and wheat flakes or similar types of cereals – base to keep bait on hook 4) Water – required in most cases to help make the mixture workable 5) Garlic salt – found in most store bought baits (probably a good idea if you used it also) 6) Garlic powder – similar to salt but may alter the fish attractant properties 7) Can of tuna – found in many homemade bait recipes. Maybe the old timers know something. 8) Anise oil extract – almost a requirement for all types of fishing bait 9) meats from the meat counter (raw livers, brains, fish parts) – the more blood, the better 10) canned or packaged meats such as cat food, dog food, spam, sandwich meats, hot dogs – an alternative to the raw meats 11) cheeses – smellier the better – think limburger or rotten cheddar

Page 49: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

49

12) miscellaneous – fish food pellets, cattle feed pellets, molasses, gelatin mixes, can of corn, strawberry soda, bbq sauce 13) Zipper storage bags – great for mixing your ingredients, storage, and taking to fishing hole. Remember, if it smells, is bloody, or rotted, it might be a great addition to your catfish bait formula. I hope this will information will get you started in developing your own secret catfish bait. The most important tip of all is to remember to have fun. Share the experience with your family and friends. Have contests on who catches the most fish with his or her bait. I guarantee you will remember the fishing stories for the rest of your life. ************************** Proverb/Quote ************************** Fishing is the sport of drowning worms. -- Author Unknown The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad. -- A.K. Today I was fishing with my 83 year old fishing buddy. Before he puts his bait out, he reaches in his tackle bucket for a bottle of bait scent. He is squirting it on his bait and hook when I noticed it was not bait scent but Gorilla Glue! I brought it to his attention and he calmly replied, oh well, that just means that the fish will stick to the hook better.

********************* Fish Bait Recipe ********************* Here’s a triple threat recipe! It works for catfish, trout, and carp. Ingredients: 1 cup cornmeal 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 cream corn in can sugar – enough to fill the can that the corn comes in water – enough to fill half of the can the corn comes in Put everything in a pan – except the vanilla extract. Boil ingredients and stir constantly to prevent burning. After boiling, add the vanilla extract and stir well. If too moist, add more cornmeal…..if too dry, add more water…. You are trying to obtain a doughy consistency….. ********************* Featured Article ********************* 5 Useful Tips on Trout Fishing In fishing, trout are one of the favorite ―fishing friends‖ of most anglers. These crafty fish are abundant anywhere. The native habitat of these crafty fish depends on the type of trout. For brook trout, the native habitat includes the territory from Labrador westward to the Saskatchewan, while the rainbow trout is a native of the Pacific slope from Alaska to California. On the other hand, brown trout has found its way into the waters of every state in the United States except Florida, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Texas. It has been reported in the waters of some of these states, but according to conservation officials, no authentic reports have been received. It is also found in many parts of Canada. In trout fishing, there are some factors that need to be considered in order to have a successful catch. 1. For trout fishing, the leader should not be greased. It will not sink far enough to cause any difficulty when picking the line and lure from the water, but if it is allowed to float; it will cast a shadow on the bottom of the stream which may scare the trout. 2. The trout is one of the fishes that are usually secured through the use of the

Page 54: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

54

dry fly. For trout, the current as well as the pools should be fished. It may sometimes be a bit difficult to keep the fly from sinking or dragging because of the various conditions of the current, but this is a matter that the angler will have to figure out for himself. 3. It is not good practice when fishing for trout to fish directly upstream so the flies, line, and leader will float directly over fish. The fisherman should make the cast from one side of the stream so the fly will only float over the fish. 4. It is important to make the first cast the best. A feeding trout will usually strike the first lure presented if it is cast so that it will float over his private domain. The angler should never fail to fish the lower end of the pool first even if the trout are rising in the middle or upper end. 5. Trout are sometimes very moody or selective and will try the patience of any angler; hence, possibly a fly with less hackle will do the trick or it may be necessary to use a spent-wing fly or a fan wing. Indeed, catching trout fishes can be lots of fun. The anglers just have to remember these tips in order to have a happy catch. ************************** Proverb/Quote ************************** God never did make a more calm, quiet, innocent recreation than angling. IZAAK WALTON He who holds the hook is aware in what waters many fish are swimming. (Latin) Fish must swim thrice (i.e. in water, in sauce, in wine) (French) ************************ Fishing Joke ************************ Angler Jim and Fishing Frank decide to go ice fishing. After arriving at the lake early in the morning, they cut two holes in the lake and drop their lines in the water. After fishing for a few hours, Angler Jim has caught dozens of fish while Fishing Frank hasn't even gotten a bite. Frank asks, "Jim, what's your secret?" Angler Jim answers, "Mmu motta meep da mmrms mmrm." Fishing Frank asks, "What did you say?" Angler Jim answers, "Mmu motta meep da mmrms mmrm."

Have you ever spent hour after unproductive hour fishing on a lake with nothing to show for it? I doubt there's a serious angler anywhere who hasn't had that happen to them. So, if you can relate to that, this article about the advantages of a fish finder might be just what you need. Fish finders utilize sonar. These devices use sound waves to detect the bottom of the lake, calculate the depth, and will also detect anything between the surface and the bottom, such as fish. This technology gives the angler a huge advantage by letting you know right away whether or not there are any fish present. Fish finders have become increasingly more sophisticated in recent years. Early fish finders simply flashed to indicate the presence of fish. But, today, with improved electronics, you can get things such as LCD's with a wide variety of LCD types and resolution. The best fish finders today are similar to watching a color display of the water you're fishing in and show everything with great clarity. Fish finders vary widely in price and, like everything else, you get what you pay for. Larger units with more features will cost more. Generally, units with higher resolution will cost more than those with lower resolution. Higher resolution will give you greater detail as to what is in the water. Many of the most popular fish finders are wrist-mounted devices and are worn just like a wrist watch. They will only have basic functions but are very mobile and easy to use. Other fish finders utilize large displays and can be mounted to your boat. Fish finders can be found for as little as $100 and as high as several thousand dollars. There are many brands available with a wide variety of features, so it pays to do your research before you buy. You can check locally or do what most people are doing nowadays... check them out online. It faster and easier. You can also find fish finders that include a Global Positioning System (GPS). GPS technology is great for anglers as it provides accurate information about your location. This will help you to return to that great fishing spot with ease. All you have to do is simply record the GPS coordinates of any location and you can easily find it again. The accuracy of GPS is about 9 feet so that should be good enough to find those fish again.

Page 60: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

60

And one of the best benefits of GPS is the safety factor. You will never get lost as you can program your starting point and then easily find your way home... even on the largest of lakes and even in dense fog. Don't underestimate the importance of this feature. So, having a fish finder is a great way to increase your catch each time out. It will tell you where the fish are (and are not), give you depth information, and return you to your favorite fishing hole. And, with GPS, it will get you back home easily and safely. Do your research online and find the best fish finder to suit your needs and budget. You won't regret it. ********************************************************** Resources ********************************************************** *******My main website is http://www.MakeYourOwnFishBait.com As you may know, this website offers a popular ebook on my best bait recipes and other resources. Announcement 2: Several (not many) subscribers are curious as to who I am, what I do, etc. I’ve just set a blog and you can go there if you are a bit curious about my thoughts and life. If is not specifically about fishing – it is more about an online journal. You may check it out at: http://darrentakenaga.blogspot.com ********************* Fish Bait Recipe ********************* CREAMED STYLED CORN DOUGHBALLS Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of salt and 1/2 to 3/4 package of pectin to 8 ounces of creamed corn and bring to a low boil (Salt keeps the bait from spoiling so it doesn't have to be made daily), Add 1 1/2 cups (more or less depending on the amount water in the creamed corn) of yellow cornmeal. Stir over low heat with a wooden spoon. A metal spoon will bend before the bait gets thick enough. Stir until the bait is almost stiff enough to form a dough ball. If it won't stiffen, add more cornmeal. Remove from stove and knead in 3/4 to 1 cup of flour. You'll think the dough is too dry to take the flour, but it will. Then add 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup of wheat germ. P.S. Additional water can be added to the creamed corn (not more than 1/2 cup) before boiling. Uncle Roy's dry mix is a good substitute to the cornmeal, as many of the dry ingredients are already in the mixture. GELATIN BAIT Pour a package of strawberry or other flavor gelatin into 8 ounces of water. Add 3 tablespoons of salt and bring to a light boil. Add a cup or more of white cornmeal (yellow cornmeal is alright, too). Remove from the stove and add flour until dough ball consistency is achieved. Other ingredients such as crushed Wheaties, garlic powder, anise seed, and vanilla can be added to the bait when desired. I generally use a small spray bottle with vanilla in it and spray the dough ball with vanilla before throwing out. ********************* Featured Article ********************* How to Make a Classic Catfish Bait By Darren Takenaga

There use to be a time when people fished for catfish out of necessity. They needed food and used whatever means to catch their next meal. Many different types of bait were tried along with many homemade concoctions. It turns out that one of the simplest and effective baits used to catch catfish is a bar of lye soap. The old timers still swear by it and maybe some of modern anglers think it’s an urban legend. Maybe the only way to verify is to try it out. The problem with modern day soap being used as catfish bait is that it is ineffective in catching catfish. It may actually be a repellent because it is filled with perfumes, chemicals, and other additives. You can still find natural lye soap through niche retailers. However, when you make your own soap catfish bait, you are also able to customize the bait by adding additional ingredients to entice the catfish to bite. And making your own catfish bait is more fun and rewarding. Making catfish soap bait is kind of easy to make. The ingredients needed are water, lye, and animal fat (beef, pork or lard). Lye is also known as sodium hydroxide. It must be noted that lye be used with caution. Read the label for all warnings and the correct ways of handling. Lye also reacts with certain metals so that it is highly recommended that the catfish bait soap be mixed in glass or plastic. Lye can be found wherever drain cleaners are sold. The product must be 100% lye – no additives. Liquid drain cleaners are not acceptable. Material list is as follows: One can of 100% lye – 12 oz 6 pounds of animal fat or lard 3 cups of water The lye must be poured into the water. You do not want to pour water onto the lye. While adding the lye into the water, stir to dissolve. Be careful of any fumes and splatters of lye water. Allow the lye water to sit as it adjusts to room temperature. Melt the animal fat in a glass bowl. Make sure that the bowl is made for stove top cooking or boiling. Once melted, allow to cool to around 90-95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Start mixing the fat with a wooden spoon and slowly pour the lye water into the fat. Don’t stop stirring until mixture begins to thicken. You are looking for a consistency similar to pudding. This mixing process may take up to an hour depending on temperature and purity of ingredients. You may add additional ingredients, at this point, to help attract catfish. Popular additives include anise extract, garlic salt, garlic powder, gelatin mixes, juice from can of corn. Pour the mixture into glass bowls, soap molds, or the bottom of cut milk containers. The soap needs at least three to four days to harden. Secret formulas for catfish baits were developed through trial and error and using lye soap as a base for your personal catfish bait is a good starting point. You are encouraged to experiment by adding additional ingredients to the catfish soap bait. It is very possible that you will hit upon the next legendary catfish bait soap that will win competitions and fill your stringer full of fish. ********************************************************** Resources ********************************************************** *******My main website is http://www.MakeYourOwnFishBait.com As you may know, this website offers a popular ebook on my best bait recipes and other resources. In a small bowl add 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of flour. You can add any flavoring of your choice, whether it be gelatin flavors, extracts, etc. , at this time. Microwave on HIGH for a couple of minutes, then stir. This mixture will b every hot and should have a rubbery texture to it. If it appears to be too soupy it can be cooked a little longer. It does need to feel soft because as it cools it will get stiffer. ********************* Featured Article ********************* Learn To Fish: It’s Fun! Fishing is a fun and tranquil sport that lets you spend quiet time with your friends, family and with Mother Nature. Fresh water fishing is a sport involving the catching of fish in lakes, rivers and streams. It involves a lot of patience, challenge and a lot of acquired skill over time. Anyone can participate in this fun activity, including the kids. To start, you have to check your State’s fishing requirements and make sure if a license is needed for you to fish. If it is required, you must acquire one by checking with a sporting goods store. They will help you how to get it, and some will even provide it for you. During the time that you are in your favorite sporting goods store, you can look around and buy the right fishing equipment that you will be need for your trip. Considering that you are a beginner, make sure that you budget well the cost and your spending on the equipment, not deciding on expensive equipments; buy only the basic things you will need. When in doubt as to what is needed, ask the help of the store keeper, but do keep in mind that you need to stick to a budget. Take your time and don’t hesitate to ask how to use each piece of equipment that is offered to you. Artificial lures for bait can be used or you can simply look for worms from your back yard. An inexpensive fishing rod and reel will be enough along with a fishing line, hooks, weights, a bobber (this keeps your line afloat), fishing lures and net. A polarized sunglass is also essential, as it will help to see clearly through the water and lessen the glare. Then if you don’t know the good locations to fish, ask about local ―hot‖ spots, or check your State’s fishing regulations for information about fishing locations around your State.

Page 70: The Trout Bait Recipe Book

The time will surely come when you will be a better fisherman; then you may decide on upgrading your equipment. In the meantime, keep things simple. It is always advised that you avoid fishing alone. Always be with a friend, as when emergency strikes, there can be someone who can call for help. It is wise to start fishing in shallow waters. Aim your cast in shady or rocky areas where the water is deep, as this is where the fish is expected to be found. Keep in mind that this is all practice first. As your skill level develops and increases, you can then attempt into deeper waters. But before going, take the time to practice casting to familiarize yourself with your rod and your reel. What better place to practice than your back yard. To do so, mark off an area using a rope and use this as your guide in aiming your cast. Rehearse and study your movements to discover a method that will work for you. Bear in mind, cast with your wrist, and not with your arm. Fishing hooks are very sharp and needed to be handled with care to avoid injury. Before casting, it is important that you should look around you and stay unobstructed to avoid hurting other people with your hook. When the right time has come and you go fishing for real, keep in mind to cast your line always ahead of the fish, making your bait land slowly, with as little splash as possible. The fish will see well at a close point, but cannot see behind. If your casts are going in a disorganized manner, move closer to the water so you can gain better accuracy. Watch the bobber closely for any movement. If and when a fish grabs the bait, the bobber will be pulled under water. This signals that you got a fish on the line. Don’t get too excited. Remain calm. Keeping your line tight, slowly reel in your catch. Place the net near and use it to bring the fish out. Remove the hook from the fish with great care. If you got an undersized fish (as noted in the state’s regulation book), quickly return it to the water. Likewise, if you have no intention in eating your catch, do not waste it and return it to the water. Releasing the fish will supply the water with more fish, giving future fishermen the thrill to experience a catch. Lastly, look around you and feel the calm, restful and serene view of the river. Have fun!
