From the Pastor November’s calendars are full—church and personal. Major things are taking place in the religious world as well as the secular world. Confirmation “retreat” classes will begin No-vember 2. Augustana will be hosting the Worship Planning and Leadership class I am teaching for the Western Iowa

Synod Discipleship Academy on November 5. Augustana will also be hosting the second part of a tour of churches that begins at Riverside Lutheran/Hope Community Church on November 6. We do our civic duty on November 8 by voting (unless you’ve already voted early). No-vember 13 is the annual birthday party for Martin Luther and fundraiser at Buffalo Alice. We will pack “backpacks” at the Food Bank of Siouxland on November 16 as we engage in mission work for our com-munity. We gather with friends from First, Immanuel, St. John, and St. Luke Lutheran churches and St. Thomas Episcopal Church on Novem-ber 23 for our annual Thanksgiving Eve worship.

Our new church year also begins in November. The First Sunday in Advent is November 27. Once again we are invited to worship with the members of St. Luke Lutheran Church at their midweek Advent ser-vices. They will take place on the Wednesdays during Advent and begin each week at 7:00. We will again be utilizing the Holden Evening Prayer liturgy.

As the busyness increases, continue to make time to breathe, pray, and relax!

The Social Concerns Event for November... is the ingathering of needed clothing for Irving School. Christ the King Sunday Who Is Jesus? Jesus’ true identity seems to remain a mystery for most of the disciples. Jesus can teach, preach, heal, cast out de-mons, challenge authority and more, but still they do not comprehend. You might say it is a case of mistaken identity as the disciples and other followers seem to be hoping to dis-cover something very different from the real Jesus. It is the criminal executed with Jesus who in his dying desperation says, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Clearly, the criminal has no other hope, still in this moment he acknowledges Jesus’ true identity.

Neither hospital is calling the church with names of those admitted, sometimes even when you ask them to! Ja’Net calls both hos-pitals on Mondays and Thursdays, but the best way to let us know is if you or your family calls.

Gift of Life Please consider a donation of blood during the month of December. During the holiday season the LIFE-SERVE BLOOD CENTER will see a decrease in blood donations. Please call the Blood Bank (712-258-0100) to make an appointment to give the Gift of Life. Your donation may save a life. Thanks for your generosity.

All Saints Sunday The custom of commemorating on a sin-

gle day all the saints of the church, especially the many unknown martyrs, originated in the fourth century. In current Christian use, the day is dedicated to thanksgiving for all who died in the Lord.

For several years, we at Augustana have recognized those who, since the last All Saints Sunday, became saints through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, those who af-firmed with sainthood through the Rite of Af-firmation of Baptism: Confirmation, and those who began their eternal sainthood in the Church Triumphant through death.

Augustana’s saints we lift up on Novem-ber 6 are:

Those who entered sainthood through the waters of Holy Baptism: Aiden Robert Garbe, Sofie Louise Rixner, and Stella Cath-erine Rixner.

Those who affirmed their sainthood through the Rite of Affirmation of Baptism: Alexys RubyAnne Baier, Noah Lee Dickman, Trevor James Welp, Abigail Elaine Whitsel, and Jackson Donavon Wynn.

She whose baptism is now complete whom God welcomed into the Church Trium-phant and eternal sainthood: Pauline Jean-ette (Benson) Beales.

An Opportunity to Serve

Augustana members assist in prepar-ing food and serving meals at the Soup Kitchen 8 times per year - in September, December, April and June. This involves 2 hours in the afternoon (2-4 pm), for preparation and 2-3 hours (4:45-6:30 to serve and clean-up. If this is a service you would like to be involved with please call Linda Nygard, 258-5220 for details. Youth volunteers must be at least 13-14 years of age, no more than 3-4 youth on any given shift, and must always be supervised by an adult and are ex-pected to work until cleanup is completed, (dishes are done, tables are cleaned and washed and floor is swept.

Eucharistic Ministry Twice a month, members take communion to our shut-ins, a service truly appreciat-ed by those we serve. Is this a ministry you would be will-ing to provide? If you have questions or would like to serve, please call Linda Ny-gard at 258 -5220.

Welcome New Members We welcome these new members who have be-come part of Augustana Lutheran Church’s family, and they are:

David & Linda Lindgren. David likes to camp, fish, and being with family. Linda enjoys those same things as well as spending time with her three children and five grandchildren. She also en-joys sewing, quilting, and bike rides.

Jason Lind-gren enjoys boat-ing, camping, fishing, and spending time with his kids.

Blake Lindgren enjoys playing video games, camping, and boating. Michael Moos loves working with old cars, going bowling, spending time with grandkids, working around the house, and going to the grand-kids’ ballgames on the weekend.

Food Drive Canned goods and non-perishable food brought to the Thanksgiving Eve service on

November 23rd. These will be donated to the food pantries at St. Thomas Episcopal and First Lutheran churches.

Tour of Churches We begin at Riverside Lutheran/New Hope Com-

munity Church, 1817 Riverside Blvd at 4:00 PM. Then we go to Augustana. Swedish rye bread hors d'oeuvres will be served and bread order forms will be available. Following the time at Augustana you are invited to make meal plans with new friends. This event is open to the public. Invite friends to share in this special after-noon of “getting acquainted”.

(L-R: Ben, Blake, Ellie, Jason)

Advent The holiday season can stir deep emo-tions within each of us. Many children greet the advent of Christmas with joy and excitement, whereas those who have lost loved ones during the past year may find great sadness in the very same event.

Thankfully, our God meets us wherever we are, both physically and emotionally. This Advent series gives voice to the complex situations and emotions with which we greet the coming Messiah and uses the re-actions of those who first received the news of Jesus’ birth (Zechariah, Joseph, Mary, and the shepherds) to do so. These services acknowledge responses of fear, confusion, doubt, and curiosity, while the coming of Jesus promises comfort and joy for all of us.

Stewardship Corner It is a common phenomenon that at-tendance decreases during the summer months, and it certainly did this summer at Augustana! Usually, financial giving corre-lates with attendance; therefore, fewer people equals lower offerings. That was also true this summer at Augustana. That is not Christian stewardship! We still have ministry to do and bills to pay. We don’t pay dues to belong to the Church, but we do have the opportunity to give thanks to God for all God’s blessings as we give back to God a portion of what God has first given us. Going to miss a Sunday? Bring two week’s of offerings the week before. We also have service from the United States Postal Service, so you could mail your of-fering to us. Having your offerings sent to the church through an electronic funds trans-fer (EFT) is probably the easiest and most convenient way to ensure that your offer-ing gets to the church on the schedule you choose. One option is called Simply Giv-ing. Check out this link to get more details or call Ruth for more information. https://www.simplygivingbytfb.com/ Your personal banker should be able to help you set up and EFT if you would like to do it that way. Again, you control the frequency of giving as well as the amount. Thank you.
