SAN RENIO FESTIVAL Not all of Europe's great popular songs that have sprung up

in thè past several years carne from Italy, nor did every one originate at a fashionable resort on thè Italian Riviera— though to ardent followers of thè annual SAN REMO FES¬ TIVAL this may seem to be thè case. For each year since 1951, when thè Festival was organized to counteract thè strong influence of American music in post-war Europe, Italy’s most talented composers and lyricists have entered their finest unpublished works in thè San Remo contest. Over thè years, thè celebrated Festival has thereby contributed a wealth of hit Italian songs not only to thè native scene, but to thè entire world of popular music.

During thè last week of every January, a jury made up of performing artists, composers, band leaders and music pub- lishers selects about twenty songs—from hundreds of entries —to be presented on three evenings by thè most popular Italian singers of thè day and by outstanding international singing stars. While celebrities and other visitors to thè glam- orous Mediterranean playground assemble in thè theater of thè San Remo Casino to hear thè competing songs expertly performed, millions of television viewers and radio listeners all over Europe are also “in attendance," anxiously waiting to learn which songs will earn thè laurels.

Not only have previous winners such as “Volare," "Ciao, ciao, bambina," “Al di la,” “Uno per tutte” and “Una lacrima sul viso" found world-wide favor, but runners-up like “Quando quando” and “Il nostro amore" have also enjoyed enormous popularity.

This album, thè latest in Epic Records’ delightful SAN REMO FESTIVAL series recorded in Italy, offers The Twelve Greatest Hits of 1965’s gala songfest. The lyrics are printed below in English translation.
