Entering its 6th year, the Festival in March will feature a raft of new hands-on educational workshops and fun social events, and we have fully refreshed all our most popular workshops to focus and expand on specific areas of interest.

This year our new workshops span the full spectrum of marine education – from night navigation and safety at sea through to a new fishing clinic, and we have also added a special new Skippers Program for those aged 18-25 years.

Also new is the seminar Living the Riviera Dream – the joys and rewards of extended cruising, detailing an amazing journey from Auckland to Fiji and over 5000 nautical miles around the Pacific onboard the luxurious Riviera 61 Enclosed Flybridge, Communique.

Of course our most popular workshops return with brand-new content and hands-on activities, including the Ladies Skipper Program, Safe Towing and Anchoring, Understanding the Weather,

Offshore Seamanship, Understanding Navigation and Radar Operation, as well as the Preventative Maintenance Tricks of the Trade, Emergency Procedures and Radio Communications.

We will also display our latest luxurious designs on the water with a red-carpet showcase that includes guided tours through the internal prototype of the new 68 Sports Motor Yacht ahead of her World Premiere in mid-2017.

Our fully narrated Riviera factory tour, via the Riviera Express train ride or air-conditioned bus will give you a first-hand insight into our world-class production processes at the largest luxury motor yacht facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

On behalf of the 500-strong Riviera team here on Australia’s Gold Coast, we look forward to welcoming you here to the home of Riviera at Coomera on Australia’s Gold Coast from 17-19 March 2017.

Last year’s award-winning Festival of Boating was something pretty special but wait until you experience all the exciting activities and events we have planned for our new March dates in 2017.

We believe the earlier dates of both the Festival and Gold Coast International Boat Show & Marine Expo will significantly enhance the enjoyment of your time here right in the heart of Australia’s Boating Industry Capital – the Gold Coast Marine Precinct at Coomera – especially for our valued interstate and international visitors.

With over 600 yachts and boats on display both on the water and on land, and with many of the world’s leading marine brands and businesses amongst over 230 industry exhibitors, the Gold Coast International Boat Show is a massive marine showcase of everything you need to have fun on the water.

Come to Coomera and see first-hand why the Expo was named Best Exhibition for 2015 at the Australian Event Awards, and was named as a finalist in the same category in 2016.

Inspect the vast array of World and Australian Premieres across an enormous line-up on the Boat Show marinas and on land, trial trailer boats and tenders, and talk to the experts about engines, equipment and accessories – in fact everything you and your family need to have fun on the water.

With working demonstrations and factory tours of the largest recreational shipyards and boat-building facilities in the Southern Hemisphere – as well as a host of new interactive demonstrations and live attractions across a giant display circuit – you’ll definitely need more than one day to experience and enjoy everything that there is on offer.

If you love boating, you’ll just love the Gold Coast from 17-19 March 2017.

Riviera and Belize owners will be able to speak directly with our key component suppliers in a special area at the northern entrance to the Riviera Marina. Riviera’s professional Aftermarket team will also be on hand to provide assistance and advice.

New March dates for the Riviera Festival of Boating ensure we continue our close collaboration with the Gold Coast International Boat Show & Marine Expo – which moves in 2017 to become the first major event on the Australian boat show calendar.

When Auckland-based Joe and Cheryl Pengelly took delivery of their luxurious Riviera 61 Enclosed Flybridge in 2012, they were already well advanced in their planning for a dream Pacific cruising and diving adventure in 2013.

They planned to live aboard for six months – they just needed a motor yacht that was up to the task.

The experienced cruising couple envisaged a comfortable and capable vessel built to go offshore and upon which they could really enjoy their extended time afloat.

It also needed to easily be able to store all the provisions, scuba and fishing equipment required and enable the Pengelly’s to be very much self-sufficient.

After much research, they entrusted Riviera to build this dream yacht, the 61 Enclosed Flybridge they christened: Communique.

Today, after 5000-plus nautical miles cruising from New Zealand to amazing destinations throughout the Pacific Ocean – including the remotest anchorages and islands of Fiji and New Caledonia, and then returning to New Zealand – the Pengelly’s are already planning their next adventure, this time back to New Caledonia and north to Vanuatu.

“We can’t wait to explore some more,” said Joe.

“Many of the islands we visited were almost untouched, and we know there are many more we don’t even know about yet.

Join New Zealanders Joe and Cheryl Pengelly as they share inspiring memories from six months living aboard their Riviera 61 Enclosed Flybridge, Communique, during which they shared a 5000 nautical mile odyssey throughout the Pacific.

“Fiji’s Lau Group of islands, for instance, have only recently started to welcome cruising yachts and they really are spectacular.

“We were very impressed by the native culture – it was genuine and the people who live on these remote islands just seem so happy to give, rather than receive.”

In six months from May to October 2014, the Pengelly’s spent only one week ashore and away from Communique … and that was when they flew home to Auckland for the birth of a grandchild.

“It really was an incredible experience,” said Cheryl.

“It was character building and we really challenged ourselves … but it was all in the spirit of adventure.”

Joe and Cheryl – married 35 years this year – will share amazing and interesting advice and knowledge gleaned from their Pacific voyage at the 2017 Festival.

They will outline everything from planning their amazing adventure through to their considerations when building Communique, as well as many inspiring photographs of life both beneath the water, and of life on and around the isolated islands they visited.

“In many anchorages, we were the only motor yacht amongst the many sailing vessels – always the talk of the bay,” said Joe.

“We also regularly acted as the resident water-tanker for the sailing yachts that ventured further afield – when we built Communique we ensured she had a very capable water-maker with a capacity of 260-litres per hour.”

Communique, which shares a name with the chart-topping Dire Straits album, proved herself more than capable of cruising the Pacific almost at will, with the Pengelly’s customising her for the task.

“She was built to go offshore,” said Joe. “We upgraded the main fuel tanks to hold 6500 litres, and also fitted an additional 850-litre tank as well as dual Onan generators, extended the side deck rails and upgraded electronics including dual satellite comms systems and infrared cameras, which were still new in their day.

“We found our Riviera 61 very comfortable cruising at 8.5 knots and the twin 1575hp CAT C32 diesel engines give us a maximum speed of around 36 knots.”

Joe’s captain’s log details the 1000nm passage from Auckland to the Beguile sea mount which rises some 2850 metres from the sea floor some 760nm east of Norfolk Island, then on to the luxury marinas and also the isolated island anchorages of Fiji, before visiting Noumea on the island of Grande Terre in New Caledonia, and then cruising home to Auckland.

“Whilst the extended passages on our own were quite challenging,” said Cheryl. “The three-hourly watches, in particular, were very demanding.

“It took 4.5 days to cruise the 1200nm from Auckland to Denarau, doing 4 hours on, 8 hours off watches with an extended crew aboard.

“However, one of the highlights was tagging and then releasing a 600-pound blue marlin at our planned stop at the Beguile sea mount.”

Of course, Joe and Cheryl have many more inspiring lessons and tales of fishing, scuba diving and island exploration to share at the Festival, so please visit FestivalOfBoating.com to secure your place now.

This year, after listening to feedback from our Riviera Family on how we can make the award-winning Festival even more informative – we have fully refreshed all our most popular workshops where our expert facilitators can expand on specific areas of interest and allowed even more question time.

We have also created a series of brand-new seminars and workshops and even introduced a new seminar for classic model Rivieras dealing with systems of models prior to 2008.

This means that from 17-19 March 2017, you can come to Riviera to learn all about new technology including pod-drives, digital switching systems, and connectivity, and at the same time also learn handy tips and tricks to maintaining and operating both the latest and traditional systems.

Our hands-on and very informative workshops will be held both on the land and on water – everything from knots lines and hitches to traditional chart-plotting, understanding radar, as well as offshore seamanship, mastering the intuitive Glass Cockpit and CZone systems that make boating with Riviera today so much easier and even more enjoyable.

It is our privilege and pleasure to help you develop your nautical knowledge to enhance your health and safety on the water to enable your family to achieve the ultimate boating experience.

For us here at Riviera, this is one of the most satisfying things we can do for our valued Riviera Family.

AUSTRALIAN WATERS QUALIFICATION Riviera and Belize family members have the opportunity to gain the new Australian Waters Qualification with a fully accredited trainer. While all marine radio users (except those operating 27 MHz marine radio stations) must be qualified, boaters have previously had to obtain a Certificate of Proficiency or an equivalent overseas qualification. Anyone operating a VHF marine radio without an appropriate qualification, or not under the supervision of an appropriately qualified person, may be breaching the Radiocommunications Act 1992, and may be fined. This course outlines core VHF competencies, operating channels and how to access search and rescue facilities. Registrants will be issued with a Certificate of Attendance and subsequently a Statement of Attainment for the AWQ. The assessment includes both theory and practical components. If you already have the Long-Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency or the Short-Range Operator Certificate of Proficiency, you remain qualified. But if you are looking to get qualified and operate a VHF marine radio within 12 nautical miles of the coast, this new domestic qualification is a must.

TRADITIONAL NAVIGATION 1 – PASSAGE PLANNINGDevelop your chart-plotting skills with an expert overview of traditional paper chart techniques. Registrants will plot a course using coordinates of longitude and latitude waypoints. You will learn to identify compass errors given true, variation, magnetic and vessel deviation. Of course this essential area of routine maintenance has a direct impact on the fuel-efficiency and cruising speed of your yacht, yet there are no current Australian standards. This workshop aims to answer all the questions you have about anti-fouling. What is anti-fouling and how does it work? What does it do, and what doesn’t it do? Which types of organisms are you likely to encounter in your waters? What are the essential anti-fouling processes so that you can make sure your anti-fouling is up to scratch, and how much paint is needed for your own yacht?
