Cape Kidnappers is perched high above the cliffs at the southern tip of the Hawkes Bay, looking out

across the Pacific Ocean. Designed by Tom Doak, it also ranks in the world’s Top 100 golf courses and

is an absolute showstopper to play. The layout itself is a stern challenge and flows nicely, leaving you

in awe of the surroundings while offering two distinct nines. The closing nine is a big hit with visitors

and plays along a ridge and valley out towards Cape Kidnappers. The par-5 15th is the hero, rated by

always in great condition and challenging but the draw cards are the jaw-dropping natural reserve in

which you find yourself surrounded by.

Wairakei golf course has been skillfully designed to blend with the surrounding native bush. Prolific

birdsong, picturesque scenery and a unique pest-proof sanctuary (the first of its kind) has led to

Wairakei being recognised as New Zealand’s number one golf course.

April 10 - Kauri Cliffs

Golf Kauri CliffsEvery part about Kauri Cliffs is awe striking. The course has found its place comfortably in the top 50

for years, and deservedly so. Kauri Cliffs try to keep it’s visitor numbers down to 24 a day, giving every

Golfer the feeling that they are playing by themselves. David Harman starts the course with 3 ‘friendly’

golf holes before the real challenge begins. The back nine showcases four inland holes that wind

through marsh, forest and farmland before you hit the homeward stretch across the top of the bay and

back up to the clubhouse. The 17th, a par-4 dogleg-left, is definitely a feature of New Zealand Golf

and the views from the clubhouse maybe some of the best in the world.

well-appointed bathroom.

April 12 - Tara Iti

Golf Tara itiThere are a few indicative features which makes the best Golf Courses special, Tara Iti probably has

all of them. In 2015 Tom Doak and his team had a blank canvas to work from, Tara Iti was built on what

had been a pine-covered Sahara by the sea. Tara Iti was designed to improve this unique landscape

and they did this with stunning effects, contouring fescue fairways, no rough but waste area, no

formed bunkers which create an interesting challenge. There are no carts or cart paths meaning every

golfer must take a caddie. Listen to everything they says and you’ll see why this could be the best new

course to open on the planet this decade.
