Message from the Principal:
January is an inspirational month! With 2013 on the horizon, seize the opportunity to set new goals for life, school, family, health, friend-ships, etc. One of the most powerful tools we can role-model and instill in our children is a positive mindset; this tool can soften challenges, but also powerfully determine outcomes to life events. Couple a strong mindset with an education, and this incredible partnership paves the way to success. Like Nike states, “Just do it!”
Midway through the month, Jeremy Bates, or the Hope Dealer, will lead our school with an inspirational message; this is one “show” your child will not want to miss!
And while we aim to educate children, the Evergreen staff works hard to keep students safe. With recent events, January is devoted to safety. As we work on empowering students to make smart choices in life, we will also address bullying, and of course, practice our monthly safety drills. We could use your help in the parking lot; please continue to drive slowly, show up early to pick up your child, plan to pick he/she up at an agreed upon location, and most importantly, look for all students walking in the parking lot.

JANUARY 2013
The Importance of Sleep
How many hours of sleep do children need each night? The ideal amount of sleep for preschool-aged children is 10-12 hours per
night. When children don’t get enough sleep, they can’t concentrate on their schoolwork, they have trouble remembering things,
they become irritable and fidgety, and they become vulnerable to colds and flu.
Here are some important things you can do to ensure that your child gets enough sleep every night of the week, including week-
ends:
Make time. Don’t allow their lives to get so full of sports, hobbies, and other activities that they can’t get everything done with-
out shorting themselves on sleep.
Set a regular time for bed each night and stick to it. Saying “good night” at the same time each night will ensure a good
night’s sleep. The human body functions best on a regular timetable.
Be firm about your chosen bedtime. Make sure that they understand that complaining about bedtime isn’t going to get them
anywhere. Alert your child a half hour before bedtime and then remind them again 10 minutes beforehand.
Empower your child. Let him pick out his own pajamas to wear, stuffed animal to take to bed, etc.
Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, such as a warm bath, playing soothing music, or reading a book. Reading is a great way
to help children drift into sleep.
Beware of caffeine. Avoid giving children anything with caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant that can affect sleep.
Create a cozy sleep environment. Keep your child’s room cool, quiet, and dark (a nightlight is OK).
It’s hard enough for children to get by with too little sleep for one or two nights, but it’s even harder when sleep deprivation be-
comes a nightly habit - that’s because the effect accumulates. Look at it this way, the more sleep your child gets, the more sleep
you get!

Saturday League Basketball All fifth and sixth grade students who are interested in participating in Sat-
urday League Basketball need to sign up immediately. There will be two
groups, an integrated third and forth grade group, and an integrated fifth
and sixth grade group. There is a $20 fee requested to cover insurance, t-
shirts, and referees. The first game will begin on Saturday, February 2nd.
The schedule will be sent home when your child is placed on a team in Janu-
ary. All games will be held on Saturdays. The 3rd and 4th graders will play
in the elementary gym and the 5th and 6th graders will play in both the ele-
mentary and middle school gyms. The coaches may schedule practice sessions
before the season starts. During the season, there will be NO PRACTICES.
Our goal is to let the children experience the game play without burdening
parents with a lot of additional time. We are requesting parents and volunteers, (coaches or others), to sign up
at this time. WE CANNOT RUN THIS PROGRAM WITHOUT PARENT HELP!
