Printsource New York is the premier market forsurface and textile design in the USA and holds

three shows a year in New York City.

There is nothing better than real experience to help you grow as a designer, so we have partnered with some amazing companies to bring you exclusive LIVE briefs* as part of the course.

Each brief will focus on a different product area, and will be delivered as if you are working for a real client. The companies will review all submitted work and provide class feedback.

Although we do not guarantee work from these briefs, many of our alumni have secured work or been signed as a direct result of briefs provided in class, so this is an awesome opportunity to get noticed!

The Ultimate Portfolio Builder has included live briefs from:

Graham & Brown, one of the world’s leading wallpaper design companies www.grahambrown.com

Crane & Co, the oldest stationery company in the US www.crane.com

Dashwood Studio, a trendy fabric company www.dashwoodstudio.com

DENY Designs, an innovative home décor company www.denydesigns.com

Card Crazy, a dynamic greetings publisher www.cardcrazy.co.uk

Cardmaking & Papercraft magazine www.cardmakingandpapercraft.com

*The live briefs listed are from past classes. We reserve the right to offer different live briefs in each class.

www.makeitindesign.com

The companies offering the live briefs provide summary feedback for the entire class, and may choose to provide individual feedback in some cases. Here are examples of the kind of valuable constructive feedback students have received in the past.

DENY Designs, Artist Relations Manager Lisa Kelly said:“Thank you all for your submissions – we loved seeing your work. The scale of a design is really important to us. In terms of what we are looking for in a new artist, we are always looking for unique and different designs vs pieces that are similar to something we already have on site. We don’t want to bring a new artist onto the team and have their artwork get lost on our site or compete with existing artists. The choice of colours is important and we look to make sure both the colours used and saturation of those colours will translate well when it is printed onto our products. Seeing an artist’s collection that creates coordinating pieces is really great! Customers are always looking for pieces to mix and match and when an artist creates coordinating pieces it makes designing and shopping easier for our customers!”

As a direct result of entering their submissions to this live brief Camilla Foss and Kerrie Satava were both signed by DENY Designs! See a selection of their designs now available on all DENY Designs products below along with their individual feedback from the live brief.

D ENY D ESIGNS LIVE BRIEF FEEDBACK

“Camilla Foss did a great job with the selection of her colours. The use of these along with her detailed designs creates a really great looking collection!

Layering done in a piece of work can really bring a

design to the next level.”

“Kerrie Satava creates a background, middle and front layer in all of her

pieces that createsdimension within the piece. When a piece has crisp lines

and sharp details ittranslates really well

when printed onto our products.”

Nina Taylor (Design Studio Manager) from Graham & Brown said:

“Floral and nature designs will always be popular and sell really well and atthe moment the big trend is conversational designs, particularly montages.Visiting your local DIY store can really show you what is happening at themoment. We really loved how the students presented their designs in roomsets as professional presentation is very important in making or breaking adesign. Spending time on repeats is also really important, a repeat tile that isreally obvious with tracking can really ruin a beautiful design. Some designerstend to be scared of using and creating space in their designs and tend to packmotifs together. Take a risk and give your designs room to grow.”

GRAHAM & BROWN LIVE BRIEF FEEDBACKWALLPAPER, PAINT, WALL ART AND KIDS

Robyn Bockmann

Wonderful style ofpresentation and love the added pantone swatches.

Robyn has a very mature style that works very well and is

very commercial. Great florals always sell really well and

this is a lovely example.

Joanne Cocker

This is a really effective design with a fantastic room set. The colouring is great and we can imagine this selling straight away in the Next directory.

Lovely use of layering which is really easy on the eye.

“i can imagine this selling straight away”

LIVE BRIEF TESTIMONIALSFor me the live briefs have been the most challenging and exhilarating part of the course. I feel I could tackle almost any subject / project

now! What an opportunity. Amazing. - Teresa Kirk

Module 4 is a great creative and professional investment for those interested in surface pattern design. The Live Briefs are an amazing opportunity that give students a glimpse into the real world of afreelance designer. It is well worth the financial and creative

investment! - Amber Coppings

Some good news: In mid-April, Windham Fabrics contacted me to work with them, and I included some of the art I was creating for this class (one

of the live briefs) in an email to them and they said they want to expand on it for a collection. So thank you for this class and the

inspiring assignments and posts! - Erica Hite

I hope there will be a part 5 to this course or future boot camp or something. I just love working to a brief and learning new things. Thank

you Rachael and Beth so so much - Kate Whelan Mason

I wanted to say thank you for an incredible course! The content, reviews, live briefs and encouragement have been priceless and it’s really made me think about my work and how I need to work on my

collections in a whole new way, so thank you. I still have a lot to take in and its great we get until November to go through things in our own time and of course we have our great Facebook community on here which is

a big bonus! I can't tell people enough how fab your courses are - Joanne Cocker

Suzanne Washington

We love that the more you look the more you see with this design and it is very on trend right now. We like that

there is a lot of variety in motifs that is interesting rather than overwhelming. The repeat is professionally done and shows a lot of thought, especially with

use of colour. Suzanne has used her creative initiative and even coloured the flooring in her room set, we love

that! Great example of aneffective wallpaper

design!

“Great example of an

effective wallpaper d esign!”
